I am new to JOD and just wondering if anyone has had an experience with rooting a device, thus tripping Knox, and then turning in the device for JOD down the road. I know T-mobile does an inspection of the device. Does that include checking if Knox was tripped. In other words, should I put it out of my mind to root this device when/if It is available and just keep it stock?
I jumped from a rooted Note Edge. I did a factory reset and turned it in. The T-mobile sales associate made sure the phone worked and wasn't physically damaged . She never checked KNOX. I've read about others where the SA WOULD check to see if KNOX was tripped. I'm willing to bet that most likely, most associates won't check.
Lol when I traded in my g4 I had Twrp show up after I factory reset. I thought it would cancel it, but it did reset. The sales rep was confused, but the sales rep next to her I am pretty sure knew because he smirked at me. Lol still accepted my JoD
Had a rooted Note 5 on JoD. No problems jumping.

Same here - flashed my Note 5 back to stock and turned it in. Hell, they didn't ever turn it on to check it was working! My last JOD until Oct.......now I'm stuck with an S7 that most likely won't even get root !

Doesn't look like any rooting will be happening with all the US variants having a locked bootloader. Go to Twitter and voice your opinion. Hopefully T-Mobile will hear the voice of their customers.

With the new bootloader Samsung seems to have made the root impossible without leave a trace.
After the root we will have knox 0x1 in the bootloader and no chance to reset it to 0x0.
So...
What do you recommend?
Wait for someone to be able to find a solution or root the phone anyway and hoping we can reset the knox later?

Lucky for me, I'm buying mine at Best Buy and getting the Geeksquad protection plan ($10 per month). If the phone bricks or something, I'll return it to them for an expedited replacement (new) at no additional cost! I hope we get root and custom roms and with the risk of tripping the Knox counter since I could care less! :highfive:
I'm keeping it untouched for the first couple of months. maybe there are some bugs or flaws in the device since it's the 1st production line we got. I want to be sure to have warranty if really needed.
I have everything needed to root already downloaded and ready to go. My Note III will not even boot once before it's rooted!
I'm opening the box and booting straight into the bootloader!
Yup I'm rooting as well I'm insured tho so don't really need to worry as I can get a replacement handset if there are any defects from first line

If I'm not mistaken Best Buy has changed there cell phone policy. Now I believe you have to pay $100 or $150 for insurance replacements just like every other carrier. I asked about it and the employee told me that people were taking advantage so it was changed. Just a heads up for you.
I can't remember the last phone the I actually booted into stock firmware. My first boot is always into the bootloader to flash/root it.
I'd wait. My Note 2 didn't see root for 4 months after purchase. The only reason I did root was to add ViPER.

Actually I was fairly lucky I didn't root right away. The first device I received turned out to be a dud. It took about a week to be sure but when it started reboot looping i turned it in.
Had it been rooted it might had been made an issue.
When I root it though I'll just kick Knox out. Never had any security issues. In my experience it only takes a little common sense.

From what I understand the same issue with the Knox counter stepping up was not fixed yet on the galaxy S4 though the device was released a couple of month back already, don't know if it's really worth it to wait for a workaround to be found soon!

Other than screwing me out of the warranty, what other problems will this cause me?
It's a tmobile. What happens when kit kat comes along, or any other update, am I going to be able to update? As of now, there are no roms, so I am stuck with what samsung sends down the pike and if I cant even get that then what good is the phone. I put in an open case, but if it's not going to screw me up too bad, I might just keep it. However, at 649, for another 50 I can buy one straight from tmobile. Should I return it?

Aside from the warranty which you have mentioned, Not a lot else except KNOX functions (which unless you use for company purposes is useless to the every day user 99% of the time) -
As for returning it, it's up to you, if you feel you have been tricked into buying a phone with no warranty and mis sold, then return it
It was misrepresented as "new" so you do have an option to return. Hopefully you paid via paypal or a secure way as I wouldn't trust them to return the monies voluntarily.

And don't buy electrical things at eBay unless you want to take risk.
A friend recently bought what was supposed to be a used, unlocked AT&T S3 on Amazon, to use on T-Mobile. When she got it I discovered that it is actually a T-Mobile S3. She had problems getting any data connection on it and after speaking with T-Mobile tech support for a few days they ran her IMEI and said they would honor the warranty, she explained that she bought it from a 3rd party and that they said that it doesn't have a warranty but the tech said not to worry, it is covered by the manufacturer. T-Mobile is currently sending her another S3 at no cost.

So are you saying that should updates come, such as kit kat, I will have no problems getting said updates?
I just want to make sure the phone isn't locked out from updates, won't care if I ever get roms.....
Yeah you'll get updates, if you're rooted you won't get them via OTA though. You'll have to use KIES or flash via ODIN. Not really a massive task tbh

I have a new Note 3 sitting in an unopened box on my desk. I have read (after ordering it) about KNOX and that there's currently no ROMs available.
I intend to go to my AT&T store today and either get this thing activated or exchange it (hoping they will) for either a GS4 or a GN2 to replace my GS3.
I am no pro at modifying the device but I have applied a couple of dozen ROMs and usually went back to factory due to some weirdness with some apps. I sorta settled on just having it rooted so I could use WiFi and tethering.
I would be happy with having just that for now on the GN3, are there good roots for the AT&T GN3 yet?
I confess I am a little worried about KNOX as well, I've never bricked a phone before and if I ruin it by hacking I'm okay with losing warranty support but I do not want to lose warranty for things I did not break like hardware. I'm guessing it is too soon to say but has anyone heard about Samsung giving grief to customers that have tripped the bit?

Will I lose enough performance and features by downgrading to the Note2 to make that a bad choice?

Yes everything samsung device who run in android 4.3 have a knox app.. And why u want to downgrading ? The note 3 is most powerful phablet this year. Don't worry if u bricked your note 3,it s easy to fix it. Read forum on galaxy note 3-gn3 android development-soft bricked

If you have MJ1 rom, look at *#1234#, then you could root folowing some guides in this forum, if it cames with MJ7, is not posiblle to root up to now, widout triping Knox and warranty.

Thanks all.
I booted it up (box was already opened by AT&T to put sim in) without the sim card to check and it was MJ5. I was going to return it but found out that the Note2 is still $299 and I got this for only $225 as some special offer so I am going to keep it.
Plan to just root it and not use ROMs for a while.

All Samsung new phone is came with KNOX now or later with upgrade will bring this stupid useless Knox.

Hi all, I'm new to XDA so hopefully someone can help me. I purchased a brand new unlocked note 3 N9000W8 in canada from a cellphone store on Monday Morning. The phone was great and worked without a hitch and had android 4.3 on it.
Later on during the day, there were numerous news headlines regarding a 4.4.2 was officially released. So i decided to do the software update. With failed attempts with the message "Your device have been modified, Software updates are not available"
I checked my Settings > about device > status > device status and it states custom or modified. I am unsure how this is possible thinking it was a brand new phone. After some in depth reading i powered off the phone and check the android download mode (power, home button vol down key combo).
It states device status: custom, firmware: custom, knox 0x1 (which meant my warranty was gone essentially). I proceeded to call the shop i purchased the phone at, and the manager said they buy the phones from the distributor which unlocks them before it gets in their hands. so it must have been rooted prior to me receiving the phone.
Long story short...i know its been quite the reading already my appologies. I used samsung KIES to backup the phone and it updated it back to the stock firmware 4.4.2. I was prepared to loose the root as i dont need it. More concerned about the warranty. With the device and firmware status back to original i can now do OTA updates, however
Problem i have now is after the factory firmware upgrade to stock, my sim no longer works on the network. Seems as if the device has a sim lock, but it never asked for one. A local cellphone shop in st.catharines said there might be an issue with the baseband after the official update.

Seems that the phone was software unlocked while it was rooted. Un rooting the device will simply lock the phone back up. Have you tried entering your carriers APN settings under mobile network?
You have a couple of options, you can root your phone again and software unlock your phone using "CF Region Lock Away" (I've heard that it worked on 4.3 (N900W8) not sure if it'll work with 4.4.2.
2nd option is to get a hardware unlock code from a retailer who unlocks phones.
If I were in your position, I'd try and return the USED phone back to the person you bought it from as it was clearly tampered with. You bought a phone which has KNOX 0x1 which VOIDS your warranty. You were under the assumption that the phone you bought was brand new in the box, FALSE ADVERTISING.

Seriously, my offer stands. If you want to meet down there sometime this week I would be glad to do so, I live about an hour outside the GTA but I don't give a ****. If there is anything I can do to help you in this situation I'll do it.
I have tried registering it on the fido network without any luck. Even the local cellphone shop was tinkering with it for 30minutes trying to help me out. They weren't able to do anything either. From my understanding, a software unlock only works for europe phones (based on what i have read) even the local guys said its usually just a pin unlock.
Update: The retailer that i bought it from said he ordered me a new white note 3 unlocked as well to replace my problematic one. When i go again i have to make sure its not rooted. IS there such thing as a Factory unlocked/unbranded samsung note 3 from samsung themselves?

The manager is more than willing to help me by getting me a new device. As mentioned in the previous post, i do hope that this one is unmodified/unrooted out of the box. Anything to look out for besides the software download information screen?
May i ask where you got your device? maybe i can go there and get mine. I might take you up on that offer, and I can swing by to get you. I live on the border of milton/oakville so you're not that far out.Go to school in st.catharines. It seems you're much more knowledgeable about this that i was at first.

I traded a Red Nexus 5 I had at the time for a Black Unlocked Note 3 +$200 cash on Kijiji. Came with a Spigen Slim Armor too.
There are tons of decent deals on Kijiji, you NEED to know how to spot fakes, check IMEI's, look for defects, etc.
I can help you find something if you'd like, just say the word. I will still help you deal with the other guy as well. I'll bring an SD card with .apk's on it like CPU-Z to make sure it's legit. The IMEI we just type in protectyourdata.ca on my phone or tethered laptop to make sure it isn't blacklisted. Checking for unlock is easy too, as long as we have multiple sims from different companies (I have 2, we might have 3 with yours).
I'll make sure you walk out of there with a fully legitimate Note 3. 100%.
If I can help a fellow XDA'er, a Canadian to boot, I will do it in a heartbeat.
Sometimes I come off like a **** (especially to n00bs, I am really mean now and then...) but I am always willing to help.
I watched a few videos on how to spot fake devices and this one was legit for sure. I plan to go saturday to get this sorted out once and for all. The problem is i require the knox to be 0x0 as my part time job requires me to have a phone that is enterprise capable, for the byod. In the event he only has rooted unlocked phones, i will get my money back because i need a legit clean phone.

For those of you who root your phones, is it ever a problem when you come to sell it? Presumably you have to declare it's been rooted and Knox has been tripped, so things like Samsung Pay won't work.
That's pretty much all that's been holding me back rooting my S7 Edge.
No issues faced ever selling a rooted device here in India. Infact all of my devices are rooted the day they are unboxed
I have faced some issues with the selling of rooted devices
People here (Greece) know about the KNOX counter and they demand a very big discount from the price
I had issues with selling my old S6. I had the ad for 400 euros back then and because it was rooted he asked 250

What's here to discuss? If you don't disclose the actual state of the good your selling, it's straight up fraud. In this case the missing ability to use Samsung My Knox due to a tripped Knox counter, plus the fact that it voids the warranty. After all, this device is marketed as one that can create secure containers using the My Knox app.
I hate idiots who think they're smart because they scam people. The final straw for me was this incident. Basically, I'm never going to buy a used/second hand device, ever. World is full of d*ckheads.
I've sold many, many rooted devices. I always explicitly told people about their bootloader and warranty state. I always write signed protocols that the buyer was thoroughly informed about the devices condition which s/he also has to read and sign.
Of course I sold those devices to a much lower price, which imho is the correct thing to do when you sell something of non-original, altered condition.
What about chinese phones? Some of them come pre rooted and well. Who knows if the manufacturer gives You warranty.
I've sold a couple of rooted phones but no one really cared about warranty, and I always was able to sell them for nearly full price. I never had a buyer that contacted me after buying the phone and complained. They all seemed happy. Probably because in my country such thing as warranty doesn't exist. Everyone orders replacement parts from the internet or they just buy a new device (mostly a worse one).
Pure luck none of them contacted you. Never had luck. Don't need it. Warranty exists where I live. 1. It'd be dishonest. 2. Don't have time for the headaches when problems occur because I wanted to earn some money in a highly questionable way. 3. I'd hate it if someone sold me a rooted device without telling me.
In Bosnia also nobody cares if the phone is rooted or not, you can tell them, but first most of people do no know what it means. I do not know anybody here who wants to use knox security features, and also here you have warranty just if you buy a new phone, if you buy it used there is no warranty anyway so it really does not matter here.
Unless you live in US and countries that have Android Pay selling rooted phones won't be a problem
