How To: Selecting/Deselecting network bands - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S7 Guides, News, & Discuss

First want to put it out there that you do this at your own risk
I love that T-mobile has Band 12 LTE coverage but for me the data speeds on Band 12 are horrifically slow, so I prefer my phone to be on Band 4 LTE (at least while at work).
I used to do this change all the time on my S6/Edge and the steps are vary similar to do them on the S7(slightly more involved).
To start with, if you mess with bands, it can(and probably will) affect some sort of your service
So to change network bands you have to enter the service menu. To do this, go to the phone dialer and enter
*#2263#
Once here you will see a screen saying ServiceMode followed by various options
To turn off Band 12 choose LTE Band Preference (#4 on the list).
Then hit next page until you see Band 12 and deselect it (this will remove the * from next to it).
Once that is done, in the top right you'll see where it says "More" select this and choose "Back" - do this until you get back to the main page
Now back at the "Main Menu" choose "Apply Band Configuration" (option 7) and you're done.
Once you exit the menu(by hitting either home or the back phone key) you'll lose signal for a second while the phone switches the bands around.
To revert back to normal, enter service menue *#2263#, choose "Select All Bands"(Option6) and then Choose "Apply Band Configuration" and you're back to normal
Hope this helps someone
EDITed the info above so that you can turn off just Band 12 and keep calling features

Updated the instructions, figured out how to make the phone stick to Band 4 and still retain ability to make/receive calls

Oh Ya band 12 is terribly slow. At least when compared to band 4. Band 4 is wideband at 20x20 20mhz bandwidth while band 12 is 5mhz bandwidth. It's just barely enough.

I was wondering why my speeds suck since I've upgraded to a new phone guessing this is why

Do you have any approximations of the speed difference between the bands, like with speedtest or something?

I didn't notice any difference in speed with my tests was really hoping for better. I'm only getting about 15-20mbps now I was getting between 60-80 about 3 months ago

I'll get some later tonight - something is going on with LTE around my work and Band 4 and Band 12 are both acting up

I cant access *#2263# menu on my galaxy s7 edge exynos version

1700 and 2100 wcdma on N7100 intational

So I was playing around with my unlocked note nd I found a selection of bands nd I can select them but not sure yet if it does unable 1700 nd 2100 bands to work on wind mobile or tmobile any ideas ive the pictures
What code did you enter to find those options?
Note 1 had the same menu options.
It doesn't mean anything without actual support in the phone.
I assume, like the Note 1, if you turn those on your phone is going to reject your sim card.

Hi just peeked into this and was able to select 1700 band, go to comi bands and select 1700 wcdma and any other missing band and it will be selected. If it makes any difference i dont know since im in a good refarm area for tmobile.

By the sound of it our hardware just don't have the bands but yet we can select them kinda strange but if you could try using tmobile sim let use know what happens
I was able to do this also, with the leaked XXDLJ2 FW (4.1.2) - I tried with earlier FW before and couldn';t get into the menu - could be total noob error though...
Remove SIM card first.
Then power up Phone, dial #*197328640*
Select: DEBUG/PHONE CONTROL/NETWORK CONTROL/SELECT WCDMA BANDS
from there, it seems you can select ALL, or add the bands you want. (I'm on TMO USA so I selected 1700/1900/2100)
Now, what I don't know is...once you re-insert the SIM ( and you have to power cycle to do that) does the TMO SIM override the changes I just made? I have very weak 4G near my house so I cannot check if 4G is working or not.
CORRECTION: Forget what I said about removing SIM card !!! I was able to access the menu with the SIM inserted, and it looks like my settings are holding ( there's an asterisk next to the WCDMA bands I chose). This is promising!
I did this on a stock rom and after rebooting settings stay the same. Cant tell if itll make any difference since im at work and dont get good coverage. Will report as soon as i can and im on tmobile california
Sadly, it appears that any other setting than Automatic will disable WCDMA altogether - I sat in my car for 20 minutes right under a cell tower tryin to make it work, but was stuck on Edge...as soon as I selected AUTO, my phone jumped to H+ ...and it was on the 1900 Band since the 1700 band is automatically unchecked when switching to Auto. Oh well...gotta wait for the damn TMo refarm then.
The TMUS reframe is killin' me. Neither my house or work are in a reframed area. However, there are several points on my commute that are reframed, and I did have a chance to eat dinner in one. Holy moly is HSPA+ fast! EDGE is virtually useless with these devices.

you can select mulit bands that way you dont have to use auto as it does turn em off ,i used the last selection it lets you select what you want
Sorry to check in late but with these changes I notice that my signal sticks to 2g and barely wants to switch to H or H+. Maybe when Im off work Im gonna try to select all wcdma band and switch to wcdma only in network mode. when selecting network mode i notice it changes all the settings in the service menu.

that's what I've been doing - COMBI BANDS, and add GSM 850/900/1800/1900 and WCDMA 1700/1900/2100.
But it didn't work for me, phone remains stuck on EDGE -
I dont think this does much only put me in Edge mode or no data at all. Its weird that theres an option for it. So ya no luck here...

You may not need to do anything. You need to enable or have a ROM which has enabled hidden menus, and then you can check whether you are on xLTE. If you go to the dialer and dial *#0011# and hit send, you will see LTE CONN BAND and it will say "13" or "4". If it says 4 then you are on xLTE.
For me it rarely works inside buildings, but I notice I'm on it a lot when I am outside or in the car. You can check if it is enabled by dialing *#27663368378# and going to UE SETTING > SETTING > SYSTEM > NEXT PAGE > VZW B4 LTE ON/OFF > B4 Enable should have a star. If it does not, enable it. DO NOT change anything else or your phone will probably quit working right! Exit and Reboot phone and you're good to go.
There is a thread around here somewhere about enabling the hidden menus.
I'm on Baja rom and unfortunately when I dial these commands in my dialer nothing happens
Check this and this thread out for any help, but basically what you need to do is edit the file /efs/carrier/HiddenMenu with Root Explorer or ES File Explorer and change it from OFF to ON (uppercase required).
B4
I went into the hidden menu and manually switched on B4 and made sure it had the asterisk next to, rebooted and then dialed *#0011# to check which band I was on and it always says I'm still on 13. Am I doing something wrong because it doesn't seem to stick on B4?

No, I don't get B4 very often still and I live in the Metro Detroit Area and in a very densely populated area. Just check it when you are in different places and you may notice it has switched. At my old office I always had B4, and we moved 2 minutes down the street and now I don't anymore. I rarely get it when I'm inside houses or buildings. It's too bad there is no way to tell which towers have it enabled except just driving around and looking for it...

Band 4 is not good for getting inside a building. It's at 2,100 MHz whereas Band 13 is in the 700 MHz range and far superior for use inside a building.
You shouldn't care what band it's on as much as how well whatever band you're on you get reasonable speed and battery life.

Just being on B4 does not necessarily mean you are taking advantage of XLTE. XLTE refers rather to the amount of bandwidth you are getting, other than that it just so happens to be on LTE band 4. In order to confirm that you are taking advantage of XLTE, after you make sure that B4 is on (with the asterisk next to it in the hidden menu settings), you also have to dial *#0011# then read the line where it says BW (either 1st or 2nd line, depending on your modem version), if BW (bandwidth) is 10mhz, you are still on regular LTE (regardless of B13 or B4), if you are on B4 AND BW is 20mhz, then you are on XLTE, meaning you have double the bandwidth of regular LTE. So far, I have NOT seen my bandwith change to 20mhz even though I am in an XLTE area and often on B4. In fact, when the phone is on B4 still with the 10mhz BW, the dl and ul speeds really suck, and connection is extremely erratic, and it just plain sucks, that's why Sprint and T-mobile's connections suck so much too, because they are on the higher frequencies. Unless you are getting the 20mhz BW on B4, for comparison B13 is far superior in signal and connection quality, and I always get much better connection speeds on B13, so don't get too excited yet unless you get the larger bandwidth.

Found a potential fix for VoLTE, Speed on VZW

Dial *#*#4636#*#* on the dial pad, on the top right menu select the option to Select band on the next screen, select Band 6. I am constantly locked on Band 4, after making this change and my internet speeds has jumped significantly.
Please be advised, that you need reboot your phone and it might take about 15 minutes to sync your new settings to VZW servers after you make this change.
Let me know, if this helped anyone else.
I tried this and idk if it helped lol
I know Band 4 is XLTE, but what's Band 6?

In the selection band, you dont have Band 4. You need to select Band 6 from the list.
How do you see what band you're currently on?
Use LTE Discovery app.
It says it changed to band 6 but LTE discovery shows band 4 even after a reboot
It is supposed to Show Band 4 on LTE Discovery. That is good. Now do a speed test and see improvements.
no improvement here. same ping and upload speed. dropped 6Mbps on download speed.
how to i change back since there's no option for band 4 in the settings?
If you selected Band 6 in that Menu, that should connect u to Band 4 or Band 13 on Verizon. Open LTE discovery app and see which band you are connected on now.
But if you want to revert back to your previous settings.. You can do a network reset from the backup & menu option under settings.
I don't have any issues with VoLTE or speeds on Verizon.
This worked, very good! I was experiencing slow speeds, especially upload speeds and this fixed it!

After sim unlock

This thread is for those who feel brave enough to venture into this settings menu. No, that isnt a challenge, its a warning. Even if you follow these instructions down to the letter, I am not responsible for anything you do to your phone. THIS MENU CONTAINS STUFF THAT CAN HARD BRICK YOUR PHONE!!!!
That being said, heres the reason for this thread. Some of us have ventured into the sim unlocking of our devices for a myriad of reasons. Some of us are planning on using the device on a network that uses LTE bands that Sprint doesnt. That being the case, there are some LTE bands that are disabled by sprint but the phone is still physically capable of connecting to. In order to enable all LTE bands that the phone is physically capable of, you can do the following.
from the dialer, dial
*#0011#
hit the upper right menu button, select key input, and type a capital Q, then ok. then menu again, key input type in 4 zeros "0000" and hit ok. Menu again and hit the back selection, menu again and hit the back selection. It can take up to 30 seconds for it to give you the next menu and you may need to repeat that process, but once the menu is up, make the following selections.
UE SETTING & INFO
SETTING
PROTOCOL
NAS
NETWORK CONTROL
BAND SELECTION
LTE BAND PREFERENCE
LTE ALL
if the LTE band youre trying to use isnt in the list above "LTE ALL", then the phone isnt physically capable of that LTE band, and if you absolutely NEED that missing band, youre going to be best served by getting a different phone made for a carrier that uses said band as its not possible to add LTE bands that the phones physical radios arent capable of connecting to.

How To: Selecting/Deselecting network bands

This is basically the same as my post for the S7/S7E - looks like the dial codes still works on the S8

Interesting, How many others here find the need to change bands?
Wonder if its many, which case wonder what Tmobile would do to fix that.
