GearVR - SGS7 Edge overheating - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions and Answers

I'm using the GearVR which I've got for the SGS6 Edge (works well with the SGS7 as well).
I do get messages while using it, that my phone is heating up and that I should disconnect my SGS7 and let it cool down before continuing.
Did anyone try to use the SGS7 Edge with GearVR? Are you facing the same issue?

Chipsets have auto-shutdown to make sure it's not damaged.

Noticed the same observation made on the Oculus/Gear VR forums. Here is his words exactly. I was hoping that all that heat pipe talk allowed the phone to operate for longer periods.
"- Heating is still an issue - after 30 or so minutes of heavy use and downloading various apps and games I received a warning that I need to coll down the phone for optimal performance. However, unlike with S6 I did not notice any slowdown in performance when the phone overheated. "

Right, I didn't notice any degradation in performance but at some point it didn't let me continue at all; I really had to take it out and let it rest. Given all the promotions and announcements, one would think they have made this solution work for more than 15-20min before the phone heats up and needs to rest... I hope for Samsung that updates will come out soon to better optimize the software and avoid the overheating problems.

I had the same issue for my Note 4 Gear. That's why I am selling the Gear once I get it, not even worth it if you can't watch a full movie through it..

Did you leave the outside lid off? I heard that helps.
Samsung needs to just release a cover with built-in fans. The people who added fans to the cover themselves said it fixed the problem.

I also had the same problem.what should I want to do I don't know Exactly

This doesn't sound good. I wanted the Gear VR specifically for watching movies in private

I may be mistaken, but I think the issue mainly arises when playing games as that pushes the gpu much harder.

I hope so. I don't play games much so that wouldn't be an issue for me.

I wonder if the Exynos model handles this better. I was told in the Samsung shop on Sunday that the GearVR demo model I tried had been in use all day and there was a queue if people waiting to use it behind me and my son as well. Fingers crossed.

So much for watercooling I guess.

It was always a PR gimmick.

To be fair. My snapdragon version definitely runs noticeably cooler side by side doing the same tasks as my s6

I went into a Samsung store and it was quite empty so I had a free roam of the S7 and Edge. I did see the Gear VR just sat there but didn't reallt think to try it out. I wish I had.

Quick way to cool it down, throw it in an ice bucket for 30 seconds. That's some real liquid cooling

Lol, I wonder if that would actually happen. Will be a good test that.
I've had a boiling hot pint glass run under a freezing cold tap a few times and never witnessed and cracking, I'm sure if a pint pot can hold up gorilla glass 4 should.
As I say would be a good test for some one to do.

Hot when playing!!

Is it just me or when you play the phone gets ridiculously hot??
Try playing avatar...download it from the game center...after 5 minutes of playing, apart the battery going flat in seconds, the display becomes so hot it almost burns!! The battery temp was 42°!!!
Anyone noticed the same?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Anybody has notice it?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Think 42c is ok, it does get quite hot but the phone will have its own threshold to don't worry bout it. Top left is where cpu/gpu is.
yes the phone do heat up when i try to torture the CPU, especially near the rear camera, but I still find the temperature level acceptable
Watching videos long period of time over wifi makes the screen almost untouchable.! Ditto the hottnes to from the rear of phone by camera.!
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
for me display is not main concern, the area around the camera is getting too hot to touch lol. And it wasn't even a 3d game! It was the game cyberlords....
Although i can say not all games have this. I also played Baseball superstars 2011 for over an hour with no problems with heating.... very weird!
I have had the same issue, But only while it was in a case and charging...
Getting it out of the case helped enough, didn't become untouchable at any point
Sgt dutchy Try a Samsung official vented case there 7.95 on ebay
Mine also gets very hot around the camera and sim card area. I usually take my gel case and battery cover off and stick it in front of the a/c for a few mins. That brings its temperature down
Cpu's get awfully hot when running games..........
Sent from my S using Tapatalk
Ok then I guess it's normal...just wondering if the camera would get any damage being so near the cpu...
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
my girlfriend is the same way
Got my SGS2 2 days ago... and played Avatar a lot. What exactly do you guys expect from a dual core 1.2ghz CPU squeezed in a 8.9mm case??? You either have NO IDEA about technic or your hobby is to complain.
Ok, it gets warm... but it's far away from being hot or even "untouchable".
Why don't you try to use SetCPU and set down CPU volt ? I think it may make the phone work cooler. :d
Before you guys are quick to jump, I thought this was some fluke as well, but I experienced this for the first time last night. Only had my browser running, was viewing a fairly graphics intensive site, and boom, I could barely hold my phone anymore.
Now, keep in mind, I've had the device since 5/4, and have done just about everything on the phone, including lots of gaming and web browsing. Not sure why it went hot potato this one time... could be the rogue process theory... but it got so hot that I could no longer hold the device. Just keep a lookout for this, especially if you have a cover on the device.

And judging from your signature you run the latest firmware (WKE2)?
I think downplaying the heating issues is not a good idea. The atrix doesn't heat up much while on 3G or playing 3d games. It seems while being great looking, the thinness of this phone is the Achilles heel. Maybe some people are okay with it being hot but samsung should not be allowed to get away with it while we are at it.
I also think there's some process making phones very hot as well. I noticed 2 months after jailbreaking my iPhone 4 that it got extremely hot to touch after using wifi for a couple min. Also some 3d games started to make it hot while they never did before. After a week of that I simply restored it to stock and the heating was gone..
I know it's a different phone and os but my point is the issue can be fixable probably. I would like this to be solved or else the sensation is looking better slowly.
this is disappointing, so we got a crappy camera and now the screen heating up to a point its unconfortable to touch it? :\ im having second thoughts now
The phone still isnt released in portugal.

Camera works great, no idea where you're getting crappy camera from. Plus, the negativity is completely unwarranted. This is still by far the BEST phone I've ever used and has exceeded all expectations... and mind you, my expectations were high.
But, that doesn't mean there aren't going to be bugs. With a dual core running at 1.2GHz + 1 GB of RAM, what you have is basically a complete computer system in your pocket. I remember back in the days, there were programs even on my PC that would cause the system fan to kick in and make the CPU go bonkers... it happens. I seriously believe this is a software bug... either with the rogue process issuing a device call that is causing that particular chip to overheat... or it's just a flaw with the current driver controlling the hardware. All things that I firmly believe will be fixed over time.
Good news is, I've been using this phone nonstop since I got it almost 2 weeks ago, and it's only happened once. I'm personally not too worried.

iPad3 Overheating. Stick with the 7.7

iPad3 owners are saying it suffers from overheating and get's too hot to hold which is a deal breaker for a handheld device. No overheating problems with the 7.7.
http://www.techshout.com/macintosh/2012/19/new-ipad-running-a-temperature/?#
No issues with my ipad3 even when it restored everything over the icloud.
Yes it will get warm under heavy load, but then I'd be worried if it didn't as it shows the heat sink is working.
The sgs2, and tab7.7 plus everything will get warm under load, its normal

The problem people are having is not that its a little warm, but that it's so hot that it's uncomfortable to have in their hand. Surely you don't think this is acceptable?
It's great that yours do not have this issue but aparently a lot of other people experience it
My 7.7 get a litte warm if I'm charging and dowloading or using the gps at the same time, but it's not much.
No issues with the wife's either. She's been using it the whole weekend, including 4G.
I doubt the news source to be honest. No such reports of it being too hot on arguably the biggest Mac forum ( Mac rumors)
Also, I don't see any evidence of the report saying a lot of people report it being to hot to touch, just 'mixed' reports.
Sensationalist news IMO based on nothing

If you Google for "iPad 3 Overheating" then you will find loads of overheating reports from many different sources.
I think that Ipad users are not accustomed to their devices running warm, I've been using a friends Ipad2 for a week and played a few movies at 720p in software mode just to put as much strain at the processor and it does get slightly warm, the Galaxy Tab7.7 on the other hand or mostly any other andriod device (aside from the other tabs ) do get warm alot so we andriod users find this normal, the long time ipad users find this new and probably bothersome.

The overheating reports are widespread (try Googling) so not just one bad device. If you listen to the video carefully then there are also reports of lag, probably due to the processor not capable of handling the screen resolution.
A lot of people are also reporting that theirs run perfectly fine, I guess its luck of the draw.

When your iPad3 is too hot to hold then it is not much comfort to know that some others are OK. Apple needs to improve it's quality control for this situation is unacceptable.
Mine isn't running hot and I just was playing that new Air Supremacy HD game while streaming audio to a Bluetooth speaker. I suspect this may not be affecting all units.
However, the comparisons of the new iPad to the Galaxy 7.7 are kind of overwrought here. They are very much different devices due to the different size.
Whether or not you like the OLED screen versus the "Retina" display is really a matter of personal preference.
Not too surprised by the reports. We've heard the same thing about previous iPads. And when you sell 3 million new iPads in a week, there are bound to be more than a handful of bad products in the mix.
I got my iPad. Mine gets warm when I'm playing games or watching videos for a long period of time. Usually don't notice any heat at all when doing regular things like surfing the web or reading. Mine definitely doesn't get uncomfortably hot fortunately.
If someone is interested in an iPad, I probably wouldn't let this discourage you. It's a pretty nice tablet. And I think the chances are probably small you'll have an issue with it getting too hot. If it does, return it and get your money back.
http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/19/new-ipad-10-degrees-hotter/
I have two iPad3's.. They do get about the 10 degrees warmer those reviews are stating.. it's not too hot to where you can't hold it, but it's definately annoying.. It really feels like you're holding a laptop in your hands because of the heat now.
Night and day feeling from a iPad2 as far as heat goes.

What lag?

I've read and seen videos saying that they've noticed lag. What lag? I haven't had any lag whatsoever. Screen is super responsive and so are the buttons. Transitions are seamless, no stutter whatsoever playing Asphalt 8. I don't get it. I've had the phone since release day haven't put it down and haven't noticed the slightest stutter either.
Am I not understanding the meaning of lag? Am I one lucky bastard with a perfect device? Can anyone give me examples of lag?

Lol. You kill me bruh But for real, isn't the SD 920 "better"? That's not my opinion but what I've heard.
There is no lag on the Snapdragon version either except in a few games. Moving around the UI is just as fast as the 6S+ I came from and Asphalt 8 runs as smooth as butter.
Where there is lag is in certain games like Hearthstone. The game just doesn't feel optimized for the phone. Some have said it's an issue with Marshmallow on Samsung devices with certain games. It just doesn't make sense since the Snapdragon version has the most powerful mobile GPU on the market.

If we're talking about specific games not being optimized it's not lag per say. My iPhone 6s would just freeze for a second while scrolling through pages. That's what I call lag. Not sure what those people are talking about. Thanks for the reference. I did see the hearthstone being mentioned.
I haven't noticed any lag and I'm a power user on an 820. I think people may have stutters here and there. But I haven't experienced that. I did on my s6 once in a blue, but haven't at all yet on the s7 edge.

The only issues I had on my s6 edge and note 5 was redraw and it only happened with the samsung clock/weather widget. Besides I find that any potential launcher lag can be easily fixed by switching to Nova. Otherwise I haven't had any redraws since my note 5.
It seems that most people repoprting issues such as lag and hot phones have the Snapdragon variant. Not all of them though as some have reported having no issues. It's strange.

Not so strange when you consider the amount of devices built at different assembly locations. With the sheer number of devices being pumped out you're bound to have a lemon or two. What I don't get is people starting threads saying they're going back to Apple because the s7 edge is laggy af when they just had a faulty device. My note 4 had this weird lag and I brought it to the Samsung service center and they fixed it. My iPhone 6s had this weird stutter but I won't go around trashing the iPhone 6s cause it lags that's simply not true.

Lucky you. I lose about 15% overnight with all my power getting sucked up by Android system, Android OS and Phone Idle.
I'm hoping this latest update from T-Mobile fixed the battery drain in standby mode. If not, I'll likely go back to the store and exchange it for another. They told me another shipment was coming in this weekend and they still have quite a few S7 Edges left in store.

Yea. Looks like some are experiencing even more although this latest update seemed to improve things. I'll have to do some further testing to know for sure.
Yesterday though, it did look like something was leaking. I turned WiFi on and didn't do anything at all. I even set WiFi to sleep when the device was turned off yet somehow GSAM reported 9mb downloaded over WiFi and like I said, I didn't do anything at all with WiFi.

AND YET ANOTHER FIRE IN NY.. 6 yr old Boy injured

This one's different as it wasn't charging. I have swapped my for the s7 edge as a loaner and this article says it also has the same problem. I'm quite concerned now.
A friend of mine was on a Flight where attendant announced THREE TIMES that if you have a note 7 you can't use it or charge it.

The story does not say whether the phone was charging. The phone was in use, but that doesn't necessarily mean it wasn't charging.
On a side note. Its unfortunate this happened but why would you give your child the phone knowing about the possible risk?
Is bs is the parents didn't know with the amount of publicity this has gotten.
The phone could have been charging and the kid still using it and phones can get hoy while playing a game. A lot could have happened to cause this unless the issue is just an unstable battery regardless of use/heat

yes I have noticed this as well. the media is running rampant trying to destroy Samsung with the launch of Crapple 7 right around the corner.
truth comes out in this case, it was a "Galaxy Core" not a Note 7.
Lewis says the family all have Samsung phones and initially said the exploding phone was a Galaxy Note 7, the device that was recalled last week after reports that some of the lithium-ion batteries exploded or caught fire.
But the boy's mother said outside their home Monday the device is a Galaxy Core, not the recalled Note 7.

This one's different as it wasn't charging. I have swapped my for the s7 edge as a loaner and this article says it also has the same problem. I'm quite concerned now.
A friend of mine was on a Flight where attendant announced THREE TIMES that if you have a note 7 you can't use it or charge it.

Not True wasn't a Note 7 , was a Galaxy Core that burn the boy, http://phandroid.com/2016/09/13/samsung-explosion-galaxy-core-new-york/
Actually it's quite concerning that it's happening on more than one Samsung product. Might reflect an overall laziness with qualify control

Phones across all brands have had issues with batteries. It's more of a battery issue and with how thin phones are.
Most companies go to third party suppliers for the parts.

There have been over 100 reports of iPhone 6s exploding, but no recall and no news about it. It seems like this entire thing is a small issue blown way out of proportion to aid Apple's iPhone 7 sales.
As I stated in another thread. Batteries are potentially dangerous and have been a part of numerous safety recalls for numerous products for that reason. I am not overly concerned it will happen again anytime soon with Samsung. Best odds for battery safety are now with them.
It wasnt a Note 7, as per this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/GalaxyNote...ld_boy_in_brooklyn_not_burned_by_a_note7_but/
But guys, please take all the precautions. I am not charging my phone till 100%, no overnight charging...
Anything with these type of batteries can explode if it over heats. Playing video games and possibly charging at the same time is just a recipe for disaster regardless of the phone or device maker.
Hell put a can of soup on the stove unopened to heat up and leave it there. It will eventually explode

If that were true, it would be a reckless design choice for the phone to allow playing video games while charging.

You tell me, i dont play video games. Is it restricted to charge while playing a video game on a cell phone? Maybe it is and i dont know about it.
Can any phone distinguish video game play and not allow you to charge?

I'm also starting to think that this has apple all over it.

Either it works and is safe, or it's unsafe and blocked from happening. So in either case, it's not a "recipe for disaster" to try to do it. No one would design a phone in such a way that an app could make it catch fire under circumstances that the phone permits (and that there isn't even any warning about).

It can certainly distinguish heavy load, heavy battery drain, high temperature, etc.

Samsung admits these were their batteries. Chinese Note 7's got chinese sourced battery that is now being sourced for all Note 7's. Samsung batteries were also in many of the hoverboards that caught fire. Samsung said they were knock offs. Now I'm thinking otherwise.

In the first month of sales? Samsung has admitted that it is a design flaw in the battery that might allow the positive and negative to contact inside the battery. That is what causes them to flare up or explode.

They did not say it was a design flaw, they said it was a manufacturing error, not the same thing.

Still didn't answer me. Is there a phone that will stop a video or shut down if temp gets too high?
Its not a design per say, its a consequence of someone abusing their phone. Of course this was not the case with the note 7 but any phone can explode if the user abuses the device.
A phone can give you a warning of heat but i could be wrong. It wont stop what you are doing or shut down.
And im aware it can distinguish those things.

The lag is Unreal

Anyone else phone just not smooth at all? I'm on latest 7.0 and my phone is so slow for a phone with these internals. I don't get it. Is there something I'm doing wrong. This phone all around has severally disappointed me. My edge is so slow that it makes the iPhone seem fast. What do I do? Seems like memory management is still poor and this processor was weak, I would have been happier with an 8 core exynos vs 4 core snap 821

It's a Samsung with Samsung bloatware.. It's going to always have lag unfortunately. I've had almost every major Android phone since the HTC Hero that includes iPhone as well and Samsung is constantly the laggiest although my S7 edge has been pretty good still no where near an iPhone or pixel

Thanks for reply and suggestions! I've disabled a ton of stuff and it doesn't matter lol. I may trade this one in for an s8 or iPhone 7 plus. I really hate iPhones as I've had several of them and a ton of Android phones. The fact that we can't really mod this phone and run different ROMs made it dead on arrival. I guess I could try a different launcher again and maybe turn off all animations.

That wouldn't be a bad idea. I was trying to hold off to see what new phones sprint gets in a month or 2 but it's driving me nuts with this phone. Google really killed my dreams by not getting the pixel and XL to all carriers.

If the S8 is anything like the Note 7, I'll gladly move to it. I'll pay the fee to get rid of the S7E and move to the S8Plus.

Supposedly Samsung is going to sell 4.3 million refurbished Note 7s in the USA that has slight smaller battery capacity at a discounted price. if sprint gets their hands on some to lease out that would be dope. I'd either get that or just move to the s8. I hate the 4 core snapdragon 821 it's so ass...

Hadn't heard about that, looked it up, sadly it appears we're not going to get it in the US.

Only thing about the S8+ I won't like is the lack of a stylus. Tomorrows the revealing IIRC so I'll be anxious to see if that changes. I really wish it would and the bigger phone gets a stylus.

So no Note 7 refurb in the US? Wow that's weak. That article I saw was a bit misleading I guess. It made it seem like world wide they would sell. I'm sure the refurbs will probably land on eBay but that's a full price phone is rather lease. Well, here's to hoping the s8 and s8+ live up to the hype since other Android OEMs aren't technically iPhone killers. Samsung is but they definitely suck in everything but hardware...

S7 Edge has the 820, not the 821, even though the only difference between the 2 is like a 10% increase in performance due to slightly higher clock speeds in the cores & gpu. What you are experiencing man is typical Samsung lag due to all of the damn bloat on the device. I've been using a HTC 10 the past couple weeks that I bought from someone on Let Go for only $200 due to the misses breaking her Moto X Pure. I gave her my S7 Edge to use until she upgrades to the S8+ next month & was going to resume using my Edge then but nope not now! The 820 is very smooth & efficient on here with virtually no lag at all & also I'm fully rooted. Only thing I miss is using Samsung Pay & earning reward points but that's only a small sacrifice, besides I can still use Android Pay & while rooted too thanks to Magisk & if I need to return to stock for any reason I don't have to worry about no stupid KNOX crippling core features on the phone & driving down its resale value. My S7 Edge will be going up for sale!

Have you tried turning 2 of your cores off? I'm sure that would significantly help you with your extensive battery drainage.

Turn off 2 of 4 cores? That would make the lag even worse. With 4 cores this phones lag is horrible I couldn't imagine only using 2 cores ie power save etc lol.

Nah, I'm not rooting this phone unless I can run stock Android over Samsung's laggy POS rom. No point. I won't be suffering for long, I'll probably just give sprint this one back when s8 launches. This phone sucks.

If you put forth the effort to eliminate the constant issues you're having, because its possible, then you wouldn't be so stressed and irritated. If you're holding on to it for a while, why not tweak it instead of doing absolutely nothing. :cyclops:

Have you gone through and checked which apps could be causing the lag? (Facebook comes to mind)! I haven't rooted either and my phone has no lag. It's almost always some app that's draining resources.
The lag culprit has been found!!!
Just as I expected, the lag is do to thermal throttling. I get extremely low benchmark scores, like a little over half what I should be getting. Ran the benchmark programs with my phone in a cup of icewater.. My scores doubled.
I am on a S7 Edge 7.0 rooted android. How can I change my thermal throttling settings? Is there a script or a program to address this?
3D Mark Sling Shot Extreme Android benchmark test results:
No ice: 1549 (I got around this number every time without ice)
With ice: 2627

Developer option to fix laggggg.
I found an option in developer options that seems to help a lot. It is called do not keep activities. These seems to help keep the ui from clogging up with old worthless data which seems to slow android or at least samsung phones down to the point you have to reset them. I am typing right now like it's an iPhone. I have a galaxy s6 currently but I doubt it has changed. The developer options has to be enabled and if memory serves you tap 7 times on the software info so.ew here in the settings. I am sure it's easily found on the net. Hope this helps.
