Become A SECRET SPY! (GPS Tracker) - Repurposing Old Devices

Become A SECRET SPY! (GPS Tracker)Being a Father of 17 children with 5 more on the way, I can get lost when trying to keep track of what everyone is up to. Several of my children have cars and are gone to wherever they go most of the time. I've thought about picking up one of those GPS trackers that I can stick to their car. These are fine, but they don't have all of the features that I need. You know what does? Any Android phone! The phone doesn't even need to have service to work the way I want it to. Let me explain.
So I need a device that can track and log the GPS data of a moving car. I also want it to be able to connect to open WiFi networks and send me the data once it has the connection. So first thing we need is to find some apps that will help us out with this.

Download GPS Tracker
Download WiFi Automatic
Start by downloading these two apps. WiFi Automatic will help your Android device connect to any open network. Then GPS Tracker will upload the data to a website where you can login and take a peep on what's going on.
Make sure to set the phone on silent and turn off anything that could drain the battery. Kill your Bluetooth, NFC, Notifications and uninstall any apps that might try to sync data once you've got a connection. We don't need facebook soaking up all of the bandwidth.
Now grab some duct tape and smash this DIY FBI CIA BLACKWATER GPS device onto the bottom on the target car. Then go to your computer, login to the GPS Tracker website and wait for the secret data to start flowing in.

Remove GPRS Notification Icon

Hello,
I recall coming across a post somewhere on how to remove the notification icon for GPRS that shows signal strength, connection status etc. I need to be able to do this without disabling GPRS. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? Does anyone know how to do this?
This would be for PPC4 and PPC5.
I know a way to customise or to hide it, but it's a bit intensive right now.
I'm working on a tool to make it a bit easier.

I think another way might be to resource hack Phcanoverbmp (at least on the Hermes). But that won't work on all devices.
Why do you need to do this?
V
Why I need to do that.
I have an application that replaces its functionality with proprietary authentication mechanisms, VPN and other stuff related to network access for a VoIP app. A common complaint is that users still use the built in stuff thinking they are connecting to the network when in reality they are not. I don't want the built in stuff to get in the way presenting a network that the user really shouldn't be connecting to.
If you're app replaces it's functionality, why not just make your own window/icon, and map it into the titlebar yourself, thereby negating the OS G icon completely?
V
Can't hack
I have my own notification icon. Hacking into the titlebar by adding a child window etc. isn't an option. We tried and it caused problems with other applications on the device. No amount of begging will change that requirement.
I know there's a way to just remove it without covering it. I remember the post and I remember trying it a while back but I can't find the post and don't remember how it was done.

Stand-alone GPS status display?

OK, now I know that the GPS is software driven - i.e. you cannot manually turn it on or off. However, is there a package that will activate the GPS on the phone, and show a status display of the satellite constellation and how well or poorly the receiver is picking them up?
I'd grab SiRFtech, but the phone uses the Qualcom chipset, not the SiRF III chipset

there are tons of gps utils... for fast switching gps on and get fix search for the small prog "GPS test" i´m running version 1.04 don´t know if thats the latest
apps
well, even if it is from SirfTech, all GPSs support the NMEA protocol. if the app you showed also supports NMEA, then this is fine.
I normally use CruxView (attached), which is also quite simple, has some nice functions (+a dedicated SiRF section, which I'm not touching )
/edit: I guess your app supports NMEA - at least I see it listed in the menubar!
Thanks folks Much appreciated Should make figuring out what's wrong with the GPS on my TP2 a little easier - takes forever to get a lock, and even then bounces in and out like a chicken on a bungee rope on acid - and it only started doing that this week, three weeks after obtaining the phone, no less!
gps is a miracle
never got it to work right...never more than 3 sats outside on both kaiser and rhodium, inside no chance!
a week ago i installed gps test and navigon and i got best gps, fast fix and can navigate through my house!

How2: Quick contact transfer w/o Bluetooth

For years we where used to transfer contacts via Bluetooth-Exchange on the go.
Now, with the still missing Obex-Capabilities of the HTC Hero, there is another very simple & fast way to exchange contacts out on the streets:
1) Download and install the free app Barcode Scanner from the market. Here is the QR-Code:

"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
2) Start the app, press MENU and choose SHARE. Select SHARE CONTACT and pick one.
3) Voila, you see the QR-Code of the selected contact, and anyone with a barcode scanner can now easy add this contact by scanning the QR-Code.
Actually this method is way faster than Bluetooth transfer ever was. No need to hassle with pairing, connecting etc.
Lol you need the barcode scanner app to scan the qr code for the barcode scanner app.
And that's actually pretty good. Only thing is, it's limited Android to Android and nothing else.
yeah, i thought of that also, after posting ;-) But there are several barcode apps out there. So the code helps getting this specific one.
And no, it is not limited to Android. My Eten Glofiish mobile with WM6 was capable of scanning QR-Codes also - it came even with a very handy Business Card scanner, which i could not find for a unrooted Hero so far...
Oh, and the Nokia N95 was also capable of scanning barcodes, just with the iPhone of a friend he has some troubles getting this to work.
pls del
admin, please delete this double post, thx & sorry.
Oh wow that's cool. I didn't know any other platforms could read codes like that.

Games Hub not working

I've never been able to open the Games Hub app on my SGS2 - it simply fails with the error "Application requires working data connection."
It's done it from new, with every firmware update, and occurs whether rooted or not. Wifi/3G connection makes no difference. Is it just me?
Yes, it is just you...

Also gaming hub isnt that good it has most of the market stuff.
I have also the same problem.
Who know how to fix it?

OK finally i fixed try these step might help you guys as well
1. wipe data and reset phone or either factory restore.
2. when you adding you google account with phone do not synchronize with old data and do not restore previously saved data with google account such as wifi, application setting.
3. once your phone is ready add your wife or be sure you are in network 3g or edge signal range.
4. now open game hub and enjoy.

Dedicated WiFi Home Phone

Dedicated WiFi Home Phone
Can you believe people still pay for a home phone service? Well they do and they're getting ripped off. Phone companies will shamelessly sell your grandparents a dedicated home phone and charge up to $50 a month for the service! That is outrageous. The reason this still happens is because many people like to stick with what they're familiar with. Convincing someone to give up their landline can be more trouble than it's worth. Instead, I'm going to show you how to take an old Android phone or tablet and set it up as a landline replacement. This will cost you nothing since we are going to be using Google Voice via WiFi.
Step 1: Get a Retro Phone Handset
You can get either a Bluetooth handset or a regular corded option. If you are going to be setting this up for someone who is technically challenged, then just go with the corded phone. No need to add the complication of Bluetooth pairing to the mix.

Step 2: Setup Google Voice With Hangouts
Use this guide here to setup a Google voice account that can make and receive calls over WiFi.
Then just delete anything that is unneeded off of the phone. Set it somewhere that will be convenient for phonecalls and you're all set! You don't need a recent phone to do this. Any old android device will work.
You mean, use a phone as a phone?! Amazing.
