Adaptive brightness or not? - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So do you guys use it? Been reading about how it may cause more battery drain. I've been using it myself but if I switch, I feel like I'd have to run a higher than normal brightness to accommodate for when I go outside. So thinking it may not even be beneficial then. So what do you use and recommend?

I don't use it because of battery hit for me. I manually raise brightness if needed outside.

Pretty noticeable difference for you?

I stopped using it a few days ago. Didn't really offer my any advantage since I have a Wear device and it was a hit & miss when I picked the device up.

ANYONE CONSIDERING THIS?
Not for that price..... What is it 126 US?
I'll be waiting for Seidio's offering in this arena. They typically offer a 2500 mAh battery for around $70.
That back cover is insane lol...

Omg, turns it into a giant brick... guess the bonus to it is if you ever got attacked you could beat them to death with your phone!

If I wanted a phone that thick I would have shopped for one. There is no way I want to triple or quadruple the thickness of my phone.
I'm sure anybody with a G1 + Extended Battery wouldn't mind.. it felt like carrying a brick the whole time.

lol. i wish it wasnt that big i can really use the extended battery. My Battery Just Went Down 6 percent in 20 mins without doing anything. The Battery Life is really killing me
Recalliberate it (drain to 0%.. turn phone on until its unable to turn on.. fully charge phone).. you could also get the 1600 mAh in the video, not much of a upgrade from the stock 1500 mAh though.
- Use dark wallpaper (and dark notifications bar if you're rooted)
- Brightness level to 0.. make sure Power saving mode is off + browser brightness to 0
- GPS off
You could get a second normal battery for cheaper and not have a giant phone.

Might as well have just said "And no more happiness!"
I will admit the dark wallpaper helps a lot if you are on the home screen quite a bit. But the brightness down to 0 is a little extreme. I don't notice much in the way of a huge drain if my screen is up at 50 versus being at 0. There is some drain at 100 though, but still not all that much.
The battery draining and recharging helps a lot too. Also, keeping 3G off in areas where you have very weak coverage (when its constantly switching from E to 3G and back) helps. If you are in one of those areas for a long amount of time each day and have access to Wifi, use that instead.
Basically my feeling is that the main draw of these phones is the gorgeous screen coupled with the GPU. It's a media and gaming-lovers phone, so why completely ruin that experience by keeping brightness at 0?

The brightness is still really bright even in the dark at 0. Maybe I'm just used to it but thats how I feel. I've seen threads which people who agree with me in regards to having the brightness at 0 and wondered if there was anyway to make it even LESS bright.
ugly
i'm sure someone will come out with a 1600mah battery or something slightly bigger.
but yeah, i would just get a cheap-o replacement if needed. battery life is a non-issue for me

I know the pros of super amoled screen is brighter than the regular one..but can't it be less bright like regular screen?
My fds Incredible can set to a level that can't even read..it would be helped if we can set it like that in our vibrant
Heck, just call TMobile's support line and tell them you have terrible battery life, and they'll send you a new battery. I just got off a chat with them and I'm getting a new battery in a few days, free of charge, no shipping, and I don't even have to send the old one back.
I never understand people saying, oh just turn the brightness off, turn syncing off, don't use X program, don't have any fun on your phone. Thats like someone buying a Lambo and telling them they will get better gas mileage if they only drive 30. By now people should know that all smartphones get horrible battery life compared to normal phones. Just get a second battery and swap it out, takes like 30 seconds to change batteries.

couldn't agree more. well said..
I have a 3200 for the G1, it gets about 30 days of uptime on wifi with no sim. I was getting a solid 5 days of heavy use on it.
I upgraded to the Vibrant, but if I dont charge it at work, my 30 minutes of bus trip each way kills it.

[Q] Autobrightness hack

Has anyone seen a hack to change the default autobrightness for the fascinate? I am coming from the Droid X and this was an option offered by a user on this forum. I am asking this because I noticed that at the lower settings the screen is plenty bright enough to be usable and that the display alone consumes about 34% of my battery life. I am getting 8 hours on a full charge but more battery is always good. Any help or point inthe right direction would be awesome.
You dont need a hack to turn off auto brightness. Just go to sound and display settings and turn it off, then change brightness to whatever you want.

I turned off auto brightness on my fascinate and have the brightness set to max. I am a power user and my battery lasts about 10-12 hours easy... Then again I use a dark theme...
i don't think he's asking about turning off autobrightness, i think he's refering to the fact that if you have autobrightness set, the lowest it will go is about 33%. it could save battery life, and still have the advantage of automatically lightening when you need it if the autobrightness would go as low as 5-10%. if i'm understanding correctly. but no, i haven't seen a way to do that yet. sorry.

i keep my phone on the same brightness at all times
Its the same as getting a nice sports car - when you have a friend, you always push the 6th gear to show off but hardly ever when alone.
I leave it on auto all the time. That's usually more than enough to emboss people.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
I'll occasionally use it on a bright summer day, but normally I'm between 25% and 40%. Late at night when the lights are off I might go to 0%.
i leave it on auto.
if i want to impress someone i think quickly flashing dow14 will do a better job than changing brightness. lol.
Of course, I also have a 12,000 watt stereo that I listen to at lower levels every day than when I show it off. What is your point?
Eat at Joe's
A majority of the time my phone is on max brightness. It is not good for your eyesight to constantly strain and try to read in low brightness.
The only time I put it on low brightness is in the middle of the night, when I wake up to check my phone, it can be too bright.
Also most people are not impressed by my phone, the majority of idiots are not impressed and still want an iPhone.
I used to leave it on auto, but often found it to slow to react our not bright enough in the car. Now have it on manual with 80-90% and find it much better.
Sent from my SGS Vibrant.
How do you strain your eyes on low brightness? Minimum is sufficient everywhere except outdoors and in direct sunlight...
I'm usually indoors, so mine is ALWAYS on minimum, when i'm outside, i set it to about 30-40%.
When its like 1500 degress (exaggeration) outside in Texas, then its time to set it to the absolute max, or auto.
Auto is good enough to show off,
I always use 10% or auto only

Same, I usually have mine on min.. When I go outside where it is hard to look at, I turn it up some, but not much..
I have only used it out in sunlight one, and I took it up to 50% to do that. Otherwise I have a brightness widget that lets me take it all the way to 0% which indoors under my mat finish screen protector I find very comfortable and easy to see.
I don't know how much it affects it, but I get 24+ hours with Master's Axura 2.1. (Sorry I am not current Master, but you update too frequently for me to reflash if the change log does not have something I really need. All of your ROMS are good daily drivers)

Say hi to Glen Plake for me.
Mine's been on auto since July.

Do you use ambient display?

So guys, was wondering if you use ambient display and if you do have you done tests for the difference in battery life?
I use it, the amount of battery that it uses is negligible.
Never works for me. Always turns on in the dark when laid on table idle. Never bothered to look into fixing because it's not a necessity for me.
Don't use or require for my usage...
I have it switched on, but it really doesn't matter, once I pick the phone up, I switch it on.
It drains a lot
Does it? How much?

No it really doesn't.
I use it. Battery drain is very low. Anyway I wish it was more accurate. The screen turn on every time I put it on the table and sometimes when I take it, it should be the opposed.
I feel with native notification light, ambient display is kinda redundant.

Hmm interesting I've been going on a little bit of a wake lock crackdown lately and ambient display adds another wake lock....... Didn't know if it would destroy battery....... Haha

In my usage in a 12 hour period, my phone is only awake for less than half an hour when I'm not actually using it.
I don't. I find it annoying personally. I like setting the brightness manually via the drop down menu to exactly where I want it when I need to.

I think you're thinking of adaptive brightness, not ambient display, two different things.
Nope. I found it comes on way too often, whether I pick the phone up or not. I use double tap to wake, so I just double tap the screen when I need it on

LOL yes.....thank you H!
I do use ambient display. I find it a very simple yet extremely convenient feature.
I would if it worked properly. It's just so inconsistent. Sometimes I pick it up and nothing. Other times it works. Just very inconsistent.

100% agree. It would be a great feature, if it actually worked as intended. But since it's so inconsistent it's more of just an annoying gimmick. I turn Ambient Display off first thing whenever I flash a new ROM.
It's a shame to see that Ambient Display isn't working for some people, it works perfectly for me, every time. I receive a notification, it triggers. I pick my phone up into an upright position, it triggers.

Auto brightness on or off?

Hello, I am in doubt, if I use the automatic brightness since I do not know if it consumes more battery than it should or not. I would like to know your opinion and experience with him. I know that the phone remembers the light patterns to make it more and more efficient but I backed off the fact that it goes overboard with the consumption of battery.
Thank you all.

Oh okay, but i think that the sensor does not consume too much no?. After all, have you or someone test the battery diference between having it on or off. Many of the times that i have test it i can see many diference but i would like to have some more opinions
