Use Android As A Microphone For Your PC - Repurposing Old Devices

Use Android As A Microphone For Your PCWe all have that one friend in the skype call who always sounds like they're driving a tractor through a wind tunnel while eating a bag of stale chips. No matter how much you tell them to figure out their audio issues, they insist that they have a $300 microphone and the problem must be on my end. Ok well first of all, not every high end mic is going to sound good on skype. Sometimes the five dollar USB mic you got in the sale bin at "Randy's Electronics and Cat Food" will sound better than your high end recording mic.
When it comes to skype, you want a mic that has good noise canceling so I don't have to listen to my echo coming out of your speakers. You also want something that will work at various distances so you don't have to put the mic right up to your face. Turn out that's exactly what Android mics are designed for. This makes your phone one of the best microphones to use for skype and other voice chat stuff.
You can use an app that will let you hook up your Android phone to your computer VIA Bluetooth or USB. Your computer will then recognize it as a mic input. Then in skype, you'll just want to change your audio settings to use your phone as the mic.

The app that you'll want to use is called WO Mic. You'll be able to connect to your PC via Bluetooth, USB or WiFi. This app is great and will have barely any lag.
Download WO Mic
Now you should be able to get much better audio in your skype calls.

hey do you know if I can use this as Window's actual mic? I want to use it for steam b/c i have no money and it doesn't seem to show up in control panel. Any ideas?

Will this work if I want to screen record on an old laptop? It's a 1.6 GHZ clock speed laptop with Intel Centrino Duo at 2GB of RAM.

Built-in mic & Headphones

There is a way to enable the built-in mic with an audio cable (made by myself) connected to my jam?
When i make a call in my car, i can ear the speaker trought car hifi, but i can't speak because the mic is disabled
You would need a 2.5mm, 4-pole jack and by follow the wiring as shown in the schematic attached, courtesy of a member (unfortunately I can't remember who). I've downloaded this a long time ago. I made a contraption using this guide when I had a generic PDA holder.
Now I now have a Seidio GM2500 car kit (Christmas gift). The advantages I get with this car kit are;
1. Two sound output jacks; 1 in stereo for connecting directly to the car sound system, and the other jack is mono + mic. The kit actually come with a mono headset+mic and a stand-alone mic.
2. Built-in speaker (though not loud enough especially when driving a diesel engine car at high speeds in the German autobahns while listening to CDs or radio and not connected to car sound system.
3. A power output for charging another component like my TT BT GPS receiver.
Here is my work (PPC Holder included) :

I have made a 2,5 (4 contacts) -> 3,5 (3 contats) cable, i have tried to carry out from 2,5mm jack a cable with a mic, but i need a new mic, because i have tried to recycle an old one, but it has 3 contacts and i have done many tests but with no results ...does the mic have the mass contact?
I suppose by "mass contact" you mean the grounding. Yes it does have. I'm puzzled why the mic that you tried to recycle has 3 contacts, was this a mic with an answer button? If yes then you'll have to find out which wire it is and short it out that it always stays on.
Ok, sorry 4 my english.... mass=ground.
The mic has a button to answer/call, but i want to exclude it (and now thanx to you i know how do it).
Then if the mic has the ground contact it goes with the ground of L and R audio, am i right?
yep! and good luck with your project
if U use a 3-pole jack, the built-in mic should still working.
For me, I use a 3-pole 2.5 to 3.5mm adapter and connect my Jam to the car stereo, and the jam built-in mic still able to pick up my voice.

Yeah! Thanx! this is the thing that i wasn't unable to do when i have opened this post.
sorry 4 my expression
::::::::::Edit :::::::::::::
hemmm... it's impossible!!... this is the scheme:
1. Left
2. Right
3. Mic
4. Ground
(the ground is near the cable)
Which PPC do U have?
This thread seems relevant to my interests.
I have an orange m500, and it seems orange have messed with the audio jack somehow.
I have only found one 2.5mm to 3.5mm adaptor (a generic one from a local hobby shop, only 3-core) that will give me sound in both ears, the vast majority are a millimetre or two (hard to judge) too short to fill the jack in my phone.
Is it broken somehow, and I should get it replaced, or are orange just lame? This is pretty frustrating, you know?

The RC-E100 headset NOT WORKING combined with the YC-A300 connector.

Hey guys,
I've been bashing my head over this why it isnt working:
Connecting the RC-E100 headset through the YC-A300 and making the buttons on the RC-E100 headset work. (it does work if I directly connect it to my Touch Pro)
Installing the drivers didnt help, and I googled a bit and didnt find any solutions.
I read something at the Touch HD forum that the RC-E100 not working due to hardware reasons.
I thought that was the same for the YC-A300, but as I quote:
Daarnaast is de YC A300 voorzien van een HTC ExtUSB standard headset-connector en een mini-USB-poort.

The YC-A300 has a HTC ExtUSB standard headset connector.
If it is STANDARD, why on earth is the RC-E100 not working?
Allready mailed HTC about it, just checking if anyone else has issues with this.
Oh and the reason I want it to work:
In my car I have an aux-in.
-Powering via universal USB carcharger
-Audio through the 3.5mm jack plugin
-WANTED to use my RC-E100 headset as a handsfree one (connecting the aux-in cable 3.5mm-3.5mm directly via the RC-E100 headset doesnt help)

Hello,
I have the same problem. I've noticed that when I connect the YC-A300 to the phone, then connect the RC-E100 to YC-A300, then unplug the earphones' jack from the RC-E100, plug it directly to the YC-A300 for a moment and then back to the RC-E100, the earphones start to work. But keys and mic still don't
BTW, did you get any reply from HTC?
i don't remember where i read it but that's how it was designed. it isn't a problem, the RC simply wasn't made to run through the YC-A300. really no way around that.
if you wanted to use it for a hands-free device for the car, wouldn't the YC-A300 work fine? 3.5mm plug into aux-in which allows you to hear calls through car stereo and the mic on the phone should be good enough. maybe turn on the mic agc.
I think he means that he wants to clip the RC-E100 on to the seatbelt so that he can switch songs without reaching out for the phone. So the other possibility would be some kind of a bluetooth remote control.
i have the same problem , RC E100 not works through Yc A300 , i use a 2.5 mm wired ear phone with built in mic , it works ok.
i think the problem is that YC A300 audio jack not maps all pins used by RC E100 , and so i think there is no solution.
A headache problem! In China,it's called "鱼和熊掌不可兼得".
PCB
I've found a PCB picture of the YC-A300.

OEM product from HTC
4 in 1 adapter with a Power Status light contains the following ports
1. HTC ExtUSB standard headset connector
2. Mini USB power connector
3. 3.5mm audio connector (with in-line mic support)
4. 2.5mm audio connector (with in-line mic support)
Anyone use one of these?
Work well?
Does it have the problems that the other adapters usually have?
High-End.
I would like to know how well this works (if it works at all).
Could come in handy if I needed to record some quick audio!
Bought one last night
I'll report back when I get it.
what problem do other adapters have???
if you mean the difference between a stereo plug an a stereo/mic plug...
then you should not blame products malfuction on your lack of knowledge

Nice.
My goal is to record some audio somehow on to the unit.
I am a DJ and sometimes would like some "basic" mono recording directly from my mixer.
If this is doable with this phone and adapter I'd be so happy LOL

This adapter has a pinout problem which causes problems with audio out.
Asshole.
I have the 4-in-1 adapter. Works good. No problems. Syncs, charge all at the same time.
You willl be surprised with the size of this thing. Initially looking at pics I thought it's fairly large and big but it's really small.
Not to mention that you can also use the 3.5mm jack for TVout, but the titan doesn't support that.
Is there any way to just RECORD AUDIO from a source in to this unit?
I have always wanted to figure it out. With all the recording software for these phones, I got to be able to find SOMETHING that will allow me to record from an audio source.
Help?

while you can use a degrading word really well
is it also possible the solution is simple?
i'm not saying its the problem
because i dont buy these things
but have a look at a pair of "older than dirt" industry standards
its called stereo & stereo w/ mic
hmm...maybe i'm wrong...but i doubt it
I have both the adapter you're asking about and one like the other pictured in this thread. I had to perform the same *fix* with both of them of bending the top right pin (if you have the notched side also on the top right) down in order to get them to work. Once I did that, it works great. I can charge and listen to music on my headphones. I have not used it with any kind of headset that has a mic in it for phone calls or with the connection for the mini-usb style headset. The 3.5mm jack works and the usb/charger port works for sure on mine though.
anybody have the one in the first post with a Ryan Mogul ROM?
I had a stock ROM and my USBmini thing to 3.5" worked great.
Moved to a DCD ROM and I had to do the pin out thing to get it too work.
Now with Ryan's ROM's it doesn't switch to audio out, just stays with the internal speaker. Any idea?
maybe this one will work for me?
Yea, I'm using Ryan Moguls verizon 2.2 heavy I believe. I had to change the pin when I had the MR1 update, but both adapters still work now. If I plug the 4-in-1 into my phone the internal speaker keeps playing, but once I plug my headphones into the adapter, the sound switches to my headphones. Can't speak for everyone else's, but it works on mine.
Is there ANY WAY that I could use the MIC on the 6800 as a LINE-IN for AUDIO???
Mono recording is fine, I don't need Stereo at all.
I hope it is possible.
Got my adapter in yesterday, did the pin mod and I'm loving it.
It will be nice to listen to Pandora while I'm driving a Uhaul for 400miles

I agree with the last word. I bought this same adapter thinking it would work because it was advertised it would work.
i have this OEM product from HTC 4 in 1 adapter . it works ok except it doesn't support out-line mic ....when talking on the phone, you could hear them they can't hear you.

FM Transmitter

i have a friend who has the nokia 97 and he showed me an app where he can use the phone as an FM transmitter, kind of like an ipod. Is it possible for the TP2 to do that? im thinking not because he antenna for the radio is in the headphones and not the phone itself like the nokia, but could we develop an app that can make the TP2 have an FM transmitter with the headphones plugged in to access radio?
I think it could make for a great and useful app.

The hardware needed to make it an Fm transmitter is not in the Tp2 and so this is not possible. Ive seen plug in devices that transmit whatever comes out of the headphone socket so this would be your only option i think.
i already use such a transmitter for my TP2.
but it isn't useful.
the transmitter need his own power supply and the TP2 will not be charge while the transmitter is pluged in....
Mic is crap, for talking inside the car very bad.

Im using the exact same thing for my car
Good enough for listening to music on my phone...maybe that's all you want
try a bluetooth a2Dp carkit fm transmitter... wow thats a mouthfull..
Anyway.. search for one of those on ebay. I've used them for years. The unit itself plugs in directly to a power outlet in your car. You use the bluetooth on your phone to transmit stereo audio to the unit which in turn broadcasts the audio to the car stereo. I like this cause.... well no wires. The units also have a "carkit" function so when a call comes in it routes the audio over the stereo too and uses a mic built in that you speak through. Pretty clear I have to say.
They range anywhere from 15 dollars to 60 dollars on ebay. I went with a lower end one and once this breaks (though I've had it for about 3 or so years now) I'll be going with a more expensive one. I've found, at least with the one I have, that when there is no audio actually being transmitted to the device the sound that is played through the stereo in the car is similar to that of an old fax machine, all be it a lot less annoying and loud. When I first started using it I used to just run a loop of white noise from my phone in windows media player and then use the built in audio player in manilla to play actual music... also really handy when driving and using tomtom or something on the phone. ALSO really handy when listening to pandora or slacker radio
Long story short.. look up A2Dp fm transmitter and you guys will be set!
For just listening to music in the car nothing beats the direct wire connection of a 3.5 mm connection, IMHO. But, if you would like a full featured alternative I'd go with an Alpine X10. It has BT for streaming music and phone calls. Also has a direct Ipod connection, which is it's main use.
I've heard nothing but good reviews from the Motorola T505
http://direct.motorola.com/hellomoto/t505/
Yeah I use a T505. It works well but is let down by the TP2s bluetooth stack. However music works fine
I've bought several FM Transmitters, not for my Tilt2 but for different cars without AUX input....do yourselves a favor and just get 3.5MM Stereo AUX Inputs if that is the sole purpose of your phone is to listen to music in your cars.... You can get a new radio with aux as cheap as $100-150 installed...
I sold all the FM transmitters i've bought, the only nice ones cost just as much as a radio installed, and you're not getting full sound quality, plus driving out of town sucks when you hit the biggest radio station of that town, just so happens to be the frequency you selected.
If it's for another purpose, my apologies..
p.s., you can mod them up to sound better on some, you can add antenna (just buy small gauge wire or an actual antenna) - search for your unit to see if it can be modded to cover more range.. I ran 12 feet of wiring all around my Honda Civic when I was in the FM Transmitter phase..
Goodluck

Integrate Bluetooth audio from phone to car audio

Hey guys, saw a post about how to do this in the accessory forum, so I figured I'd copy my little how-to I typed up on my car forum for what I did.
Just picked up a 98 gti vr6 a few weeks ago and have already been putting some time into it.
I'm sure I'm not the first person to think of this, but I hadn't seen the idea on any of the VW forums (or my Camaro forums for that matter).
Basically what I did, was set up my stereo so I can wirelessly stream music and other audio from my HTC Evo through bluetooth to the cars stereo.
What you need is a phone capable of playing audio through bluetooth (most will do this just fine). You also need a headunit with an auxilary input, and a bluetooth audio receiver.
I personally have an Alpine headunit, the HTC Evo, and this Belkin Bluetooth receiver

http://www.google.com/products/cata...og_result&ct=result&resnum=3&ved=0CB0Q8wIwAg#
If your headunit has rear aux inputs (the red/white plugs), you will need to go to radioshack or bestbuy and purchase an rca to headphone plug cable. It looks like this
You will also need a power source for the Belkin bluetooth receiver. It uses a very small charging plug. I went to walmart and found a car charger for an old Nokia phone that works perfect.
Installation:
The first thing I did was make sure the bluetooth reciever has power. Take the nokia car charger you purchased and hard wire it to your remote amp wire from the headunit (the blue wire on your headunits harness). This is convenient because it automatically turns off the receiver when you turn off your stereo or car, and turns on automatically when you turn the car on.
Next is to plug the rca cables into the aux input on the back of your headunit, and run the headphone jack into the bluetooth receiver.
All of the wiring fits nicely below the headunit, tucked behind the HVAC controls in my mk3.
Now all you need to do is turn on bluetooth on your phone, and pair it to the receiver.
All of your audio (Music, navigation, pandora, etc) will play wirelessly through the car stereo with the exception of calls, which will still go through the phone.
Enjoy!
If I missed anything let me know, tried to type this up quickly at work, just figured it was something some of you might be interested in.
