Fire TV software update 5.0.5 Begins Rolling Out To 1st-Gen. Devices!! - Fire TV General

The long waited Fire TV software update v5.0.5 begins rolling out to all the 1st-Gen. Devices:
http://www.aftvnews.com/fire-tv-software-update-5-0-5-begins-rolling-out-to-1st-gen-devices/

My 1st gen Fire TV and Fire TV Stick are both on the developer preview 5.0.3, will I still get the 5.0.5 release version automatically?

Elias Saba, the www.aftvnews.com owner, has mentioned that is not so clear if users that have installed the developer preview version (5.0.3), on both 1st gen Fire TV and Fire TV Stick, will get the new 5.0.5 automatically, because as always Amazon has not mentioned nothing about it.
But, he thinks that all 1st Gen devices should get it, including the ones with the developer preview!

Escuseme Elias, what I meant was that you run our "Excellent", News and Information site for the Amazon FireTV!!
BTW, I would like to said www.aftvnews.com, is the one and only information site for the FireTV devices!!

I think he means that his site is www.aftvnews.com. It is an awesome source for AFTV news...thanks Elias.

Elias and [email protected], Thanks for the clarification!
I have already corrected this little mistake, that I made unintentionally...
I already put the correct address of the site: www.aftvnews.com

I thought all those who have the FireTV Sticks (1st Gen.) would like to know, that Elias has updated the information about this new 5.0.5 release for FireTV devices.
Elias is now saying that received the confirmation that also all older FireTV Sticks will receive this new 5.0.5 update:
"Update 2/3/2016 8:00am
I’ve received confirmation that older Fire TV Sticks are indeed also receiving this software update. Additionally, the update addsbetter support for Amazon’s add-on subscription service, as well as a new consolidated “Your Videos” section"

Does "WATCH ABC" still work?

Do we have any screenshots of the homescreen yet? I'm wondering if they completely got rid of the recents section. Really got used to having kodi show up in the top row. I guess worse case we could use xposed and rbox's tv mods to omit some items and make the apps section a little higher.

Maybe these screenshots, posted on www.aftvnews.com yesterday can help you to see some new features and enhancements of the 5.0.5 update:

Support promised that the XBOX360 wireless USB receiver will work with 5.0.5 when using LAN (which doesn't work right now). I hope for the best...

Will it be also possible to root the fireTV very easy like the 4k fireTV?
Gesendet von meinem D6503 mit Tapatalk

No, due to different hardware the 4k root can not be used for the aTV1.

For those who got the upgrade and uses toslink for Dolby Digital in Netflix and Kodi, does it still work? Wanna make sure this does work before I upgrade. Thanks!

Any chance that I could update without losing root?

Once they release the source for 5.0.5 and I get the update url for it, I will be releasing TWRP and a prerooted rom for it.

Thanks for all you do Rbox. I'm anxious to update mine. It's been having some issues that a clean install hasn't fixed and I'm hoping upgrading to 5.0.5 will clear them up.

My FTV is on dev 5.03 but doesn't see my microsoft bluetooth mouse, which requires android 4.4 or 5.0. Should I hope it'll work when the 5.05 update hits?

Fire TV software updated released

The Verge has reported that a "narrow" release of the next software update has started today. I know everyone here probably has it blocked, but let us know if you get any indication of the update.
More info here.
UPDATE: Amazon is now saying the update will be released next week.
Wonder if this update blocks root... guess we will find out soon enough...

A weeks time to close a root exploit that just came out over the weekend? I doubt their devs will be able to squeeze that in but maybe.

I hope you're right! As a Prime user, the video filter would be a cool feature. It'd be nice to be able to update and re-root.
Also has the music baked in, and free time. Can apparently search by price.
As long as sideloading still works I may just go for it.
I bought the box was to be able to view Prime video content as well as local media and Netflix. Root is nice to have, but for me losing access to Prime video means the box is not doing what I bought it for. Of course, so is losing XBMC, so if sideloading breaks the box goes back and I probably pick up a TV that I can stream to via Bubble as well as use for NF and Prime - or I reconnect my WDTVLIVE and hope my bluray player eventually gets Prime. It just got the Digital Concert Hall from the Berlin Philharmonic, and that's a great, if expensive, service.
I had paid google apps working without root after sideloading enough of the google stuff to get login working.
If the update's mandatory for Prime viewing, I update. If it breaks xbmc, I return.
I imagine Prime video will still work...right?

Yea thats wht im saying this is almost certainly an update they have had on their road map for a while. Only potential problem I can see if towelroot use the same exploits that jcase already submitted to amazon / qualcomm for patching (he mentioned a few weeks back that a security update was coming very soon).

Isn't this exploit the same as the root exploit for the Samsung S5? If so, this would make it an Android/ASOP issue, no? This could impact the time it takes for a fix to be made and trickled down to different implementations.
The towelroot exploit was a kernel bug that was disclosed at the beginning of the month and has been fixed in the kernel since the disclosure.

Sure, but did Amazon have time to get that fix tested / do they have time to get that fix tested if they're releasing an update this week? Very hard to say - depends on them realizing that the Linux kernel vulnerability to a local privilege escalation meant their device was trivially rootable and having the development team chops to patch the bug themselves rather than waiting for the kernel maintainers to address it and release the source code for the fix.
I suspect that Amazon's not at the top of Google's list for private code releases
As far as the update goes: it's possible that Amazon will, at some point, stop permitting access to their content from devices running code at or below release X.
I don't know their history on this sort of thing - do the Kindle Fire devices stop having access to reading material if they get too far behind in updates?

It's broken for me.
I rooted and lost amazon video right away. get player error.
Trying to find anybody that claims to have prime video working with rooted box, no luck.
I am thinking about unrooting now as xbmc is good, but I have been using plex for years and it is the cleanest interface for my purposes.

2 FTV with working Prime video on the original installed firmware and the last rootable update. Just got done watching 1st season of Stargate.
Been watching The Wire/Prime on a rooted aftv. NP here.
Try shutting down XBMC/Netflix and try the prime video. Or do a full shutdown and try it first up before doing anything else. I have a movie paused on XBMC and tried a prime video and I got that error. Shut down XBMC and it started working fine again.
Not sure if the XBMC launcher messes up prime streaming due to the problem I listed above.

Fire TV Stick Launch Thread

Since the Fire TV Stick will begin arriving soon, I figured it would be a good idea to get a launch thread going to consolidate the initial discussion.
The Fire TV Source Code Page shows two possible software versions:

54.1.0.0_user_100211520

I got my confirmation email this morning. Mine arrives 11/19, tomorrow.
They’re shipping out of Arizona, in case anyone was curious. Seems UPS is delivering them, which sucks since UPS doesn't have a good tracking system.
Pretty stoked to check it out. Hope my Note 3 is capable of casting to it.

I'll bet the app won't launch until the 19th. Seems logical, but it is weird that they don't even have it available the day before.

54.1.0.0_user_100211520

For those who get one tomorrow, let us know if blocking the Fire TV update domains also blocks the Fire TV Stick update. Or better yet, set up Wireshark and get the update file URL.
I ordered mine on the Oct 27th at 1:50PM CST. My ship date shows Tuesday, December 9, 2014. I could have sworn that when I ordered it, it had a ship date of 11/19. So bummed
Fire TV Remote App is now available on the Google Play Store.
Currently it only works with the Fire TV Stick. Support for the Fire TV is coming 11/26 according to a note in the app's description.
Subscribed. Based in the source code, can anyone tell if the functionality is the same as the Fire TV?
Ordered Oct 27th. Estimated arrival Dec 19th :crying:

It's delivery day today.

UPS? or USPS (US Postal Service)?
UPS has a great tracking system. Sign up for UPS Choice (free), and you get notified as soon as a label prints for delivery to your address, and tracking updates.
USPS on the other hand, has a questionable tracking system, and sometimes hands off to "Laser Ship" who adds a delay getting status and tracking info.
On a side note, mine was ordered Oct 28 @ 9:25am Eastern, and Amazon's order status shows Delivery estimate: Wednesday, December 24, 2014 by 8pm :crying:
EDIT 11/22/14: even more bummed. Walking through Best Buy last night, they have a big display of them sitting right there. (regular price of course).
Just got mine, hooked up, updated.
Ordered on the 27th, pretty early in the day. Delivered via UPS.
It's working pretty well, and digging through the settings it has an option to enable ADB over wifi, right there in the menu.
Sideloading XBMC/KODI to it right now.
Edit: After sideloading, the only way to launch an app is through the settings menu. Any ideas on how someone would get it to show in the main apps list?

I'm not sure on XDA's stance on linking free APKs. Since it's kind of a gray area of piracy, I'll just say that you should look in the comments here: http://www.aftvnews.com/amazon-fire-tv-remote-app-for-android-released/

New Bar on FireTV recommending TV Shows

Yesterday I thought my firetv auto updates as every one has been discussing on the forum as I saw a new bar on top of AFTV menu. This was the first I had seen the bar. However there was no update to the firmware and I still have my root. I've done quiet a few firetv's and none have gotten updated after setting the com amazon update to disable.
Has anyone else seen that bar. ? How does a new feature/bar appear without a firmware update?
I have it too.. well the GUI is made in HTML 5. all they would have to do is update the source page and the next time your AFTV refreshes the page, it sees there is a new one online and refreshes with that instead of the locally cached one.

Thanks for the explanation. But honestly I did get worried. I've been contemplating that probably amazon has a hidden server which it will use to update the firetv's to the latest ones as there are reports around. Hope not.

That would be nice. That add area reminds me of the add space taken up on the Roku which I detested from day one. I am thankful for having a rooted Fire TV with an XBMC launcher and finally moving away from Roku for good.
I thought I was going crazy thinking was that ad there before and it's bugging the hell out of me.
If the nexus player was available in the UK I would ditch the firetv in a heart beat now because of this.

Is there an xposed mod for this? Its annoying for sure but not a deal breaker. The firetv is superior than the nexus TV.
If you go to bestbuy and do a stock check, the firetv's are sold out but you will find abundant nexus's, appletv's, roku's.

Procedure & Files for upgrading Mad Catz Mojo

Thnx Phoenix, yes i bought one today (wednesday delivery) and was surfing around clipping and downloading stuff. about the MOJO. This looks easy enough to use. Thank you for your work already done !
Still in doubt if i want android TV installed or CM as i bought also a android TV remote with it (not even sure if these work but i costs only $4). Love the shields laucher/desktop.
Got one also start play with it now .....look cool and fast.
thanks a lot OP. very helpful.
Excellent work and thanks, @Phoenix4848! Don't forget that there are alternative methods of flashing, and also other ROMs out there. I recommend setting up Fastboot just as a safety net; it can save your bacon if something goes wrong with Flashify. This XDA section is a gold mine of info on the MOJO, but you don't need that link, do you?

Thank you for the feedback. Yes I want to install Remix OS on a different mojo; I won't attempt that until I have Fastboot up.
I created the folder/link for a kodi box support group on fb. The procedure is simple enough for the average user and it's important mojo owners get rooted and SuperSU installed - there is a piece of ransomware that is targeting Android 4 devices. CM 12.1 is stable and user friendly - and it's android 5.1 which will run the newer versions of Kodi.
Adding it here was an afterthought.

Good thought, even if it was after. You don't need fastboot to install RemixOS, or any other one, but if your MOJO is soft-bricked and you can't get into TWRP recovery you can fastboot boot the recovery and flash from that. You can also fastboot flash the recovery. And BTW you do not necessarily need MoDaCo's fastboot, if you're set up for other Droids like I was you can use your existing fastboot setup. I find it easiest to do from Linux.
Yes, I like the Lollipop ROMs myself, a huge advance over KitKat (IMHO they shouldn't have bothered to release KK). And Marshmallow is even better, much to my amazement. I wish I had the extra time to learn to port ROMs myself, there'd be a MM ROM out for the MOJO about now!
Fastboot set up?

Not a clue. But here's a couple things to try:
1) Call or e-mail Amazon tech support
2) Try a different ROM on the MOJO
Remix maybe?

Probably not a problem with the Mad Catz device probably a problem with the OS. Stock is Android 4.2, CM doesn't seem to work with every player. Remix works with more players but I don't know if it will work with Prime. I'll try later.

It really is isn't it? Once you get over the hurdle of flashing a decent ROM, you're set. Fantastic little gadget. I was very lucky to get it for £60 here in the UK. I don't think I've ever had emulation play so well on anything before.
thank you ...for reply and advice now I will try to flash the new ROM I have to read more instruction.... again thanks

I'm a Prime member but it'll be a couple weeks before I get a real chance to fiddle with it, so if nothing more comes up to prevent it, maybe I'll try it on CM12.1 then. Too many irons in the fire now...
Last year, there was a workaround to play Prime videos via the Dolphin Browser with flash activated. However, ever since Amazon Prime Video dropped Flash support, it's no longer working.
Prime was the reason I bought my first MOJO, ended up selling it when the the workaround stopped working. As of now, I use the (second) MOJO for Kodi and the Youtube App only.
It's truly a shame we can't use it for a service we pay for, especially when they claim on their website that all android systems (>4.0) are supported.
I haven't tried any other custom ROMS since the stock meets my needs for now(minus Prime Video). But please do let us know if it works on the custom ROM you try.
Amazon Video works on Remix

I just got Amazon Video working on the Remix ROM. No tricks, it just works.
Additional note Xposed also works on that ROM. And Paragon should offer NTFS support. I like Remix - next step get a HDD working.

Yes. Fire is a generic identifier that applies to multiple (unrelated) device types. Use the link previously provided.

Ok thank you very much! I guess it is better to move this post instead of creating a new one. But I cannot do it myself I guess. I will ask an admin.
Thank you!
Dude, this is simply amazing! Than you very much for your work. Never been easier for me to sideload the Ares Wizard. Are there any further plans to integrate other builds to, so that we can use this tool as a central source to sideload builds?
As stated above this. Can you allow us to automate installing our own build of choice?
It looks like your app will install just the wizard for the build and you have to finish the job on the device?
I have my own build that I tweak very often and use across many devices so this would be perfect if it installed my whole build automatically. Kind of like how restore works in adblink.
Will you be sharing your source for your program in the future?
Thanks for this cool app!

Thank you very much! Yes there are plans to integrate other builds too. If you have feature requests/bug reports please go to my post at the "Fire TV Themes and Apps" section of this forum.

We are planning a similar feature which let users integrate new builds over a webservice.
Sharing the source is not planned currently.
Please go to this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-tv/themes-apps/app-firetuner-tool-t3409249 and add a small description as a comment what features you like to see.

Nope. But you extract in from another device that has the Amazon app store installed and has successfully downloaded/installed the apps in question. There are various tools to accomplish this; many can be obtained from third party sites and sideloaded to the containing the Amazon app store. Also note the device holding the Amazon store does not have to be running FireOS as Amazon Underground will install/run on most android based devices.

You Stick just has to be in the same network as your PC.

Should work now
ES File Explorer is banned from Amazon App Store, but you can use the FireTuner method to install Apps, Kodi and more. Is there an alternative File Explorer for Amazon TV devices?
Just added a Backup and Restore feature!
