Fire TV software updated released - Fire TV General

The Verge has reported that a "narrow" release of the next software update has started today. I know everyone here probably has it blocked, but let us know if you get any indication of the update.
More info here.
UPDATE: Amazon is now saying the update will be released next week.

Wonder if this update blocks root... guess we will find out soon enough...

Anyone that does not want root needs to tell us the changelog for the update when they get it.

I unrooted my FTV and will wait for the update.

Yeah, I'd like to know this as well. My Fire TV is out for delivery. Can't wait to mess with it.

The Verge has updated their article. Amazon is now saying the update will begin rolling out next week.

A weeks time to close a root exploit that just came out over the weekend? I doubt their devs will be able to squeeze that in but maybe.

I hope you're right! As a Prime user, the video filter would be a cool feature. It'd be nice to be able to update and re-root.

Also has the music baked in, and free time. Can apparently search by price.
As long as sideloading still works I may just go for it.
I bought the box was to be able to view Prime video content as well as local media and Netflix. Root is nice to have, but for me losing access to Prime video means the box is not doing what I bought it for. Of course, so is losing XBMC, so if sideloading breaks the box goes back and I probably pick up a TV that I can stream to via Bubble as well as use for NF and Prime - or I reconnect my WDTVLIVE and hope my bluray player eventually gets Prime. It just got the Digital Concert Hall from the Berlin Philharmonic, and that's a great, if expensive, service.
I had paid google apps working without root after sideloading enough of the google stuff to get login working.
If the update's mandatory for Prime viewing, I update. If it breaks xbmc, I return.

I imagine Prime video will still work...right?

If it is even the same exploit. This update has been coming for awhile so maybe it will just be the update they have been working on.

Yea thats wht im saying this is almost certainly an update they have had on their road map for a while. Only potential problem I can see if towelroot use the same exploits that jcase already submitted to amazon / qualcomm for patching (he mentioned a few weeks back that a security update was coming very soon).

Isn't this exploit the same as the root exploit for the Samsung S5? If so, this would make it an Android/ASOP issue, no? This could impact the time it takes for a fix to be made and trickled down to different implementations.

The towelroot exploit was a kernel bug that was disclosed at the beginning of the month and has been fixed in the kernel since the disclosure.

Sure, but did Amazon have time to get that fix tested / do they have time to get that fix tested if they're releasing an update this week? Very hard to say - depends on them realizing that the Linux kernel vulnerability to a local privilege escalation meant their device was trivially rootable and having the development team chops to patch the bug themselves rather than waiting for the kernel maintainers to address it and release the source code for the fix.
I suspect that Amazon's not at the top of Google's list for private code releases
As far as the update goes: it's possible that Amazon will, at some point, stop permitting access to their content from devices running code at or below release X.
I don't know their history on this sort of thing - do the Kindle Fire devices stop having access to reading material if they get too far behind in updates?

It's broken for me.
I rooted and lost amazon video right away. get player error.
Trying to find anybody that claims to have prime video working with rooted box, no luck.
I am thinking about unrooting now as xbmc is good, but I have been using plex for years and it is the cleanest interface for my purposes.
Anyone have prime working with root?

2 FTV with working Prime video on the original installed firmware and the last rootable update. Just got done watching 1st season of Stargate.

Been watching The Wire/Prime on a rooted aftv. NP here.

Try shutting down XBMC/Netflix and try the prime video. Or do a full shutdown and try it first up before doing anything else. I have a movie paused on XBMC and tried a prime video and I got that error. Shut down XBMC and it started working fine again.
Not sure if the XBMC launcher messes up prime streaming due to the problem I listed above.

Holy crap awesome!
Probably going to need some custom built security libraries though that won't be easy to port. The .apk itself should be easy enough as it's built for the Teg2.
And Netflix was trying to tell us that they needed protected hardware sandboxing for HD content. What jerks.
sassafras
Porting it over seems unlikely. The Lenovo actually contains a physical DRM chip that's required for Netflix to run. At this point, it doesn't look like Netflix will ever appear on early Honeycomb tablets. Even if it does, it'll be a highly neutered version.

I just completed reading an article about that.
I guess with a little decompiling it might be possible to trick the new Netflix .apk into ignoring the DRM module.
If not, it'll be back to what I know and love: Piracy Arghh!

Isn't a little late for a Tegra 2 Tablet to jump in the game when Kal-El and similar chips are rearing its head for this fall? But these devices are going to be built well, I'm sure.

Thats an old rumor. They have been using software DRM since the official Android app was released. They just need to port it over to honeycomb.

Not an old rumor. They're using software DRM now, but only for SD content. Content owners are still demanding hardware sandboxing if you want HD content.
Piracy for me in the meantime.

I'll take a 480P streaming version if I can get it. Doesn't look too bad on the TF. The fact that phones/tablets on 2.3 can run the regular Netflix app proves that it's not impossible on a Tegra 2. If they use the hardware excuse for older 3.0+ tablets, then you know it's a cop-out.
But yeah, all this HW DRM crap for HD content sucks.
I can see it in the store and install it now on my Transformer, but whenever I try to play something I get an error.

True that... I see that the Netflix app now supports the Atrix, which should be pretty much equivalent to the Honeycomb tablets (no DRM chip, Tegra 2). I'm perfectly fine with SD content on the TF, really. I currently use PlayOn for both Hulu and Netflix, and I'm pretty sure that never gets to HD levels but is still perfectly watchable.

I found the new version and sideloaded it. You get the same error as before. If someone could dump the APK from the Lenovo, we might be in business.

It's working on other Honeycomb tablets. That's for sure.
Android Central have it working on a Tab: http://www.androidcentral.com/new-n...mpaign=Feed:+androidcentral+(Android+Central)
I tried loading it with wifi off and you can see it's just loading a webpage. The address is
https://uiboot.netflix.com/apps/mob...46&sdk_version=3.0&sw_version=1.3.0 build 246
If we could find the address for a working honeycomb tab, I bet you it would work on the Transformer.

[Q] So let me get this straight...

If I root my Fire and Amazon decides to update again, it will **** it up and I will have to root it again? Every time my Fire gets and update?
Yes....
It is easy to reroot using SuperOneClick since it was already setup initially to root. Takes maybe 20 seconds. All apps are intact in data/app. Market may or not need to be re-copied over to system/app. No biggie.
Thanks. Also what will happen when I eventually get ICS for it? Will I still have to worry about updates from Amazon?
Once a custom ROM is installed, Amazon updates from or via Amazon are no more.

If ICS comes to the device. You might keep an eye out for a working port instead. Have not read any confirmed report that Amazon will release officially but may have missed it if so. Regardless a dev port might well be available before anything else.

One guy's already got it up and running. He just has to get the bugs out. You haven't heard? And no, since the OS on the fire is a heavily modified version of Gingerbread, I don't think Amazon would've taken the time to build all of that unless they were going to stick with it. BUT, like I said a ROM is almost ready.

I have rooted mine and made some changes, but then I unroot it so I still have access to Amazon video on demand, etc. I root it again when I need to make updates. Only takes a few seconds. Unrooting doesn't undo the changes you make.

I've had it with stock

I was hanging on to Stock because I thought the amazon prime membership might be worthwhile, but after two painful OTA updates, I'm out.
I had even frozen OTASilentInstall after 6.2.1, but the damn thing updated anyway! I can't account for this, but it did happen.
I'm backing up my stuff now and will try CM7.
For the record, 6.2.2 breaks root and you need BurritoRoot2.bin to get it back. It's a pain and doesn't yet work like the original. (As far as I can tell, you have to reset it at each reboot. Probably OTA rootkeeper will work, but still a pain.)
What was painful about 6.2.2? You can easily root it again.

yes, you're right. I rootEd again long enough to install CM7.
I'd just had enough jumping through hoops getting my hardware to do what I wanted it to do.
I wish companies like Amazon would understand they would do better to cooperate with users than to fight against them or treat them like fools.
Agreed, I stayed with stock after the last update and root, but not again. I guess I didn't think it would happen again so fast.
I'd drop stock in a hot second if I could get the gameloft 'Kindle Fire Edition' games to run. Sadly there's something I'm missing in the system that keeps them from running in CM7.

It's been said numerous times that freezing OTASilentInstall does not prevent updates. Also Amazon isn't trying to intentionally break your root..

Yup. It is a pain.
On the other hand. Now that I finally flashed CM7, it's fantastic! It essentially solves the issue in one fell swoop.
It seems to me, it all comes down to how much you plan to consume Amazon's services. If little to none, then CM7 or some other rom is the way to go. If you have or want a prime account, etc. then you have to deal with the workarounds.
Fair deal.
The only thing that kept me off of CM7 is the video issue relating to audio sync. Video is around .5 to .75 seconds ahead of audio at all times on Netflix. So right now I'm running the MoDaCo stock ROM, which I don't know if it will prevent OTA updates or not, but paulobrien gives you a pre-rooted, odexed ROM that's ready to fly. Then I just use a different launcher, and it at least FEELS less stock-ish.
A little lost....I am currently rooted, If I receive the 6.2.2 and root breaks....exactly what will I need to do?

I used this thread and got Order And Chaos working on CM7, runs perfect. Also, almost all the gameloft apps I was looking for showed up on the market.
The ONC I bought on the Amazon Market doesn't show up and I didn't try that one since I had picked up ONC on Android Market for .99 during the sale at New Years, so I don't know if KF edition will run. You may have to purchase them a second time.

Oh, yeah, I had been using Go Launcher Ex with an ICS theme and was pretty happy with it.
The thing is, I had spent so much time setting everything up and the update undid a bunch of it, not just root. Plus it revived a lot of the bloatware I had already gotten rid of. It was enough to push me over the edge.
I backed up if I ever want to go back and I may also consider MoDaCo which looks good. MoDaCo with OTA protection would be very tempting, indeed.
I do give Amazon credit. What they did with KF, they intended to do and they did it well. It's just that I'm an inveterate tinkerer so I need my freedom! I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir here on that point.

Netflix won't work after root

I rooted my NP and put Pure Nexus on it. Looks great..but I can't get Netflix to work. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling and reflashing GAPPS to no avail. This is really very frustrating. Hoping someone can shed some light on why it's happening. Thanks.
Anyone? One of the reasons I bought a Nexus Player was for Netflix. I have it on my blu-ray player, but I can't really stand the way it looks on there.

Rooting the Kindle Fire 7(7th Generation)

Over the past two days I have been searching and scavenging unrelentlessly for a solution to my problem. Someone got me a kindle fire 7(7th Gen) for christmas and I decided I wanted it running stock android. It came with FireOS 5.6.0.0 and recently updated to 5.6.1.0, last night I was working on it before it updated and I couldn't seem to root it. The root wouldn't go through or it'd fail right at the beginning. After updating to 5.6.1.0 I came very close to rooting and I think it is a solution in the future.

Man that would be great, I hope someone can break Fire OS 5.6.1.0, I would love to run the newest android OS on this Tablet. Would make a great OBDII diagnostic Tool for working on cars. :highfive:
5.6.1.0 can be rooted on the HD 10. I'm told it's rooted with dirty cow via KingoRoot. If the new fire 7s have the same kernel, there might be a possibility. As of now, it appears the HD 10 2017 had an unpatched kernel that allowed for the root. it's something Amazon has yet to fix.
When will we have root?
I have three of these and need root access for them to be worth a damn!!!!

Looking forward to a root install on mine keep on rooting.
for a 69$ cost, it would be worth it if i could root and get it to do the things from google play that the fire store doesnt have. Tried two 10ionch ones and i had less than desirable results
How likely it is that this device will be rooted in the future? Look like there is no development for this product.
I’m considering to get one for my kids, but without root I prefere to select another device...
Noticed a few people say they want the root so they can install Google Play store, you can without root on the current Fire 7. Just did, you need to install the framework, account manager app, play services and then play store apk. Working, but quite slow, just got the Fire 7 so may be doing a few bits in the background updating so maybe causing the slowness.. or its just been a long time since i used a £30 tablet.. haha.
+1 above. One of the first things I did was put the Play Store on it. It would be useless to me without it.
The reason I want to root it is to see if it can be any faster with stock android. As it stands it is very slow for almost everything.
Should we stop getting updates at 5.6.1? Is that even possible?

Really hoping you're able to root it.
Just got mine in the mail. Should've researched it a bit more before purchasing but it was only $17 so I jumped on it.
It is extremely slow for a quad core, 720P device with 2GB RAM. I expected it to be much quicker. Does Amazon put that much bloatware or is there another reason it is so slow?

Nearly every amazon app will consume resources. Many will reactivate after a force close. A lot of it is because of the apps.
Ok, thanks for pointing that out. I will probably try that Kindle tool or fire tablet tool, whatever it's called to cancel OTA and remove some Amazon apps.
I've removed most of the stuff etc, but now I got a competely unusable tablet. Tasker etc works, but the lockscreen cant be removed. For motion detection quite bad. If you screwed up, just so a factory reset. Without root a thing you disabled or 'uninstalled ' will come back to life and you can start over. I love my HD 10 but hate it too. Finding it difficult to get a rom to flash. Woo i guess it all boils down to what you want your tablet to do. If you have a fire 7, you will be very United due to memory and what not. HD 10 is so far excellent with memory when debloated.

I want to use it just for a home automation dashboard. Just bought it cause it's been 30€, so I thought it could be a good tab for the wall. With unusable, I mean I can't put it on the wall, because the lockscreen is still there. It would be kinda useless to have motion detection with a lockscreen. And rooting doesn't work, or is there a new exploit? I would really love to root it, then I can finally use it. It's just lying around right now, until it can be rooted. I've removed the OTA update thingies, so no updates will be downloaded. Also it's shut down, so no problem there. I'm on 5.4.0.0 like said, if I have to upgrade to root, I'll do that, but for now, I try to stay on the lowest version possible, so when an exploit comes, I'm prepared
I hate this tablet there needs to be a root. it runs incredibly slow and I think it's because Amazon's apps are running please find a root solution
