It is well known that this was not gonna last. Even roms devs are starting to tell people not to ask about it as the rom is rooted and they will not go out of their way to fix something like that. Most of the time people dont even really use it.
PErfect example is that all mobile payments are blocked where I live due to security reasons.
It would probably be a good idea for someone to check if this only impacts the binary trainwreck, or if it impacts ALL root... i.e., http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/general/root-t3231211
While I won't say that our safe open source approach can't be detected, I can say with authority that the binary is doing a heap of things that GREATLY weaken the security and cause very... dramatic... alteration to the rootfs.
If somebody were to identify how they are determining that the device is untrustworthy, I would be happy to attempt workaround with that information. However note that it isn't particularly high priority since I don't *use* android pay. Reasons I don't use it;
1) it isn't available in my country,
2) it doesn't provide a benefit since it is easier to pull my credit card (which has an nfc chip) out of my wallet than to pull this whale of a phone out of my pocket,
3) I really don't want to add an additional tracker for this information.
4) People who wave their phone around the payment terminal really look like douchebags.
If I'm going to use AP , I just boot into a non rooted ROM via multirom, is not ideal but rather do that than dragging my wallet around when going for gas, groceries, etc phone is always with me anyway, just a quick tap and done
hopefully a workaround is found to make it work with root, but is not looking good so far [emoji53]

It's not looking good because of Google runs the check. If I read things right, Google actually runs a CTS check on the device. Failing the CTS stops Android Pay from working, and the variant of superuser used isn't likely to make any difference. The device will still fail.
There's one guy in that discussion thread ranting that this is somehow a bait-and-switch on Google's part, when it really is just Google enforcing its Terms and Conditions.

Still have to carry it for your ID card. At least here you can be ticketed and fined for not carrying it. I personally hate carrying my wallet but like I stated all mobile payments are blocked here so doesnt really matter.

Google will close the latest exploit soon enough. Then I'm sure someone will find another hole to get Android Pay working, which Google will then close. Repeat ad infinitum.
Currently this latest exploit is working properly, so enjoy it while you can.

One of my family members tried to use an iPhone for mobile pay. After 10 tries we just swiped the plastic lol. It's a nice novelty but hardly worry the headache over using a credit card

Ever since they moved to the chip card payment, it takes longer than the simple swipe. Android Pay is faster than the chip reader in my opinion.

Cant say much about that as most cards here still dont have the chip and the banks are not in a rush to change over.
I can still get my wallet out and swipe my card fast then the average person can do it with a mobile device I feel. Cant say for sure as all mobile payments are refused and blocked here.

For me it's situational. There will be a few times I'll be waiting in line and already have my phone out browsing so in that situation android pay will be faster.
From a neutral position, grabbing the card and swiping it is faster but with the new chip cards and systems it's become tedious for me. I'll pull the card and swipe it at which time it will indicate that the card is a chip card and I have to use it in the chip reader. Once inserted it takes a while before it reads it, verifies and then indicates you can remove it.
From a neutral position the chip card process is slower because of the time it takes to read the chip in the card.
Samsung has it right with it being compatible with new and old systems. I haven't read to see how consistent it is but the concept sounds better.

See you may have a bit of an edge there. Here most places have signs that say to make sure to have your cell phone put away when you come to the counter or they will not serve you.
Samsung pay doesnt work here either, as retailers keep the machine behind the reg so all none cash payments have to go through the cashier.
There is one bank here that has moved to the chip. But they just sent out a letter saying they were sending out chipless cards due to lack of interest or usage.

That's very interesting, thought they had to because there was a law passed for merchants, but eh, we'll never catch up to the rest of the world cause quite frankly...we're either lazy, can't wait 5 seconds for a card to read, or don't want to upgrade anything, Ahhh, the American way

So lovely developers, a note from the proud users: MAXIMIZE NFC USE.
I haven't found anything, correct me if I'm wrong, that currently uses the NFC capabilities of the S. I expected 2.3 to have something that would allow us to add CC info and use NFC at Pay-pass stations etc. So please developers, (Or even an app request?) find a way to use that NFC and we will love, Truly. That, and you users know it, will become a make/break for a ROM released.

As of right now, the NFC can only READ information. It has been confirmed though, that a later update will add the WRITE function to the NFC.

I just hope nobody makes a app that could read credit card with NFC (blink) information. As of right now when I put my Nexus S on top of my wallet it reads: "Unknown tag type"
Hopefully it stays that way

You need to read more and post less. There are no APIs to write via NFC yet.
I like that you say "we" can inspect and tweak it, which its obvious you can't even search the forums, let alone RE or develop code.
I would keep an eye out on the Toshiba Regza phone from NTT DoCoMo in Japan. NFC is huge here. Every store has it and allows you to use it to pay for whatever. The new phone may have some APIs when it is released.

I have Chase, and both my Chase "check card" and MasterCard both have "Blink" which is their NFC enabled cards.
When Google finally enables read/write/send capabilities of the NFC, this is what I would guess would happen:
The Chase Android App, you log in and enable the NFC feature. So then you're at the grocery store, you lauch the Chase Android App, login, then "wave" your phone at the Credit Card terminal to pay.

The API will be released... although true not with source.... because Google expressed explicitly they want to work with third parties. Nokia experimented with nfc for data transfer so it is unlikely that Google will ignore this use. And yeah if people flame you're right not we here at xda but we here at the OEM I work for. Idiot.

Tonight my a500 was stolen. I work in sales and use it to look things on the net for customers (like price comparisons, etc) and use it for the website and lots of other business-type things (as well as lots of personal pics etc).
But, unfortunately when my back was turned, someone swiped it...!!!! argh:angry:
I had the newest release of jellybean on it from the forums here on xda, but had no remote wipe app installed (never even crossed my mind to do it). Therefore, I'm wondering if the is any remote wipe abilities in jellybean or if there was an app by chance that i had installed that would have this feature hidden (like onavo or norton utilities... reading now).
If anyone can help that would be amazing! Changed all my passwords, etc. So, I should be fine there. thanks guys

I left a facebook update that i hope shows up on the notifications in the tablet and make the culprit feel guilty. maybe it'll show up in the morning at work... fingers crossed. made me look at getting a wipe app for the old phone now, went with seekdroid. seems legit. any other suggestions?

Well, I don't have a lot of faith in those types of apps. They usually only work if an idiot steals it. Over here, pinching phones and tabs is big business, and usually done by pro's. They're quick to dump the device to another agent, who runs a stock full rom on it, clones the IMEI number from a good device , then dumps it to one of the umpteen million fly by night resellers. They (moscow govt) talked about cracking down on multiple PH number/IMEI combinations, then quickly realized over half the devices in Russia would stop working! Including their own!
Best thing to do, never let it out of your sight. Get a new device, like I did my phone, and the pain goes away.
But then again, maybe your culprit is a true idiot, and will post fotos to your facebook account!!!!!

The last person to steal one of my phones was a true idiot. This happened at my school and good thing I'm done with school. I was in class and had my phone charging and I had it out because I trusted most everyone in the room and would known who would have taken it.
So he asked if it was my phone and about a minute later he leaves the room. I noticed it was gone and others around me saw him take it. (Not obvious at all)
So I had the Vipre Mobile Security beta installed so I immediately logged into the web interface to activate GPS tracking and set off the alarm. Except when I logged in the service hadn't communicated when the app/phone in over a month so it was useless.
Over the period of the next 24 hours he had used the phone to take photos, delete everything on my sdcard, spam my YouTube feed with countless videos, and make voice calls to their own friends and family. So I looked on my carrier's account management and found all these numbers. Between the school staff and police it was possible to track the calls back to his identity. I got my phone back the next day...without the case and screen protector, sucks that they kept that.
So the lesson is make sure you have good, working anti theft solutions with cascading failsafes.
The next app I installed after ditching Vipre was Avast. This was a good solution with some flaws. Avast was one of the first Play Store security apps to utilize root access. Because of root in addition to setting as a device administrator it was also installed as a system service and app. This made it persistent and harder to remove.
The issue with avast was since the app was in /system and not /data it would have to be completely reconfigured after flashing each nightly update. Sometimes I'd forget and then it wouldn't work. It claimed to support the CM backup script except it was designed for CM7 and CM9 uses a different type of backup.
The other issue with avast was there was no web interface. You could only send commands through SMS.
Since I got my Nexus I bought Cerberus anti theft its perfect. It has system app support. Instead of a user setup it apparently registers the device ID or SIM or something and loads the user account from the cloud server. So all I do is add the apk to the CM backup list and it auto configures when installed. I can use SMS control or the website. I can monitor and control pretty much the entire phone and it takes a front camera photo on invalid pass code.
I check weekly to ensure its still running and it hasn't failed once.
As a failsafe I also have the first screen splash modded to my contact info in case of loss. Its encrypted so if anything maybe only a boot loader update could remove it.

I think that only works if you accept all the tracking disclaimers to enable location history and not many people have history turned on.
I guess the lesson is you can't let your guard down for even a second. One time I let a friend sync their iPod touch on my computer since they didn't have a PC and they ended up snatching my classic monochrome iPod. I'm still upset to this day since they didn't take my old iPod touch instead. That just proves the first gen iPod touch is so bad people won't even steal it.

oh yea def' just thought for pot-luck ,
it is a pitty when you let someone come into your house as a friendly gesture only to find them stealing from you,... ive had my fair share and also a fair share of miss-understandings thereafter because of a newly aquired paranoia..... but i think its 100% justified.
If you download the lookout app and install it, if you ever lose your tablet, on the lookout website you can see where it is, (if GPS was enabled when lost) you can also do a remote wipe, and a remote siren, make it put off an alarm remotely.
Its a good app to have just in case, but doesn't help if the app was not installed before being lost or stolen.

yeah sound like the prey app too , i can also send a popup message to the tab screen, be near the location displayed on the map and then activate a "S-SCARING" siren lol
also one good thing is prey uses the location services through wifi as well as gps, tells you the address of the current and last wifi hotspots logged into
so if it says currently "wii hotspot mcdonalds fast food , thief street. lol go to the mcdonalds and set off the alarms,...clearly see your tablet...and a jackass who need a beating. :highfive::highfive::highfive::highfive:

and thanks guys for al of the advice! still no luck with the tab i think the worst part of it is was that i was really getting to love it. like the development here, especially with jb!, is fantastic. and i was a kickstarter supporter for chameleon and now seeing the new updates really puts salt on the wound. lol. in the next month i'll need another tablet, so im debating on finding another 2nd hand one for the price of a nexus 7, or just getting the 7. only thing is though, is the size....

I'm assuming you've looked into "Plan B" on the Android market, right? It automatically installs from the market on your tablet, and broadcasts location immediately on install. Not sure how accurate or helpful it is, but if you haven't tried it yet... you probably should.
The other option is to put out some Wanted To Buy ads...

This is my first time having an NFC device, so please bear with me. I rooted my phone the evening I received it. Now I'm trying to set up Google Wallet, and it says that my device is unsupported. In the help topic regarding this message, it mentions something about rooted devices being unsupported due to security reasons, can I still use this feature? Is it discouraged in any way?
If anybody has some insight or experience with this, I'd like to know.

The reason it is discouraged is because anyone (with the now-how) can brute-force access your pin if your phone is rooted. And then skip away making payments on goodies.
What would be the chances of someone getting that close to you, they would have to be pretty much hugging you

Any place that has tap-to-pay or pay-pass features (forgot what the actual name is). I've seen it at McDonald's, CVS/Walgreens, Best Buy, and a few other large chains around town.

Plenty of you fly to Japan and China, they have been using it for years. You can try looking up PayPass mechant, such as this link: http://www.google.com/wallet/how-it-works/in-store.html
So it doesn't have to be specifically for google wallet? They work on the things like the speedpass at speedway or your creditcard where you just tap it to the machine and it gets your infO?

I tried to use this at Walgreens today. They had the translucent blue PayPass terminal. I sat there for about 30 seconds and nothing happened. I even tried to enter the app and still nothing. NFC was on, and my card is attached in Google Wallet.
I think I set up wallet, then unlocked and rooted, then had to re-set up Wallet. Am I doing something wrong? The clerk was staring at me like I was crazy, just holding my phone next to the terminal....

I had that happen at Taco Bueno. And a McDonalds. But at some McDonalds it works. I think that so few people use this system that when its broken no one complains. And its probably never even tested when they set it up.
Typically you can just tap your phone to the thing (no need to be in the app). It'll prompt you for a PIN. Then you can pay.
If it's not working you may have a poor data connection? I think it requires data to work.

I'd still say it's more secure than that. Anyone can swipe a card and charge it as credit. Relatively few people would know how to brute force hack google wallet on a rooted device.
Everyone.
Google wallet does not require a data connection.
If its not working , I read on the wallet website to "hold it about an inch" from the terminal. Without placing it on the terminal. Try to see if that works.

Yeah mine didn't work at the gas station the other day, though I didn't log out of Google Wallet before I flashed a rom and rooted recently so some say that it'll never work again after that because of the secure element getting locked or something like that. Hopefully that's not true.
I've flashed and reflashed a lot. All you need to do is delete the data, connect to high speed internet like WiFi, then open it up. Worked for me.

Not sure if anyone has noticed....but on 4.4 Wallet does not give any errors during set up. I am S-Off, Super CID on ARHD 40.3 and I am on TMOUS. Have not gotten an opportunity to test yet...

Google virtualized it, not sure if that means a physical implementation is going to go away entirely, but so far seems to be working.

Yeah Google has said that for android 4.4 and up every device with a NFC chip will work with tap and pay because it no longer needs to look for the secure element or something like that but yeah it works been using it for a while now love it.
Now for them to release it in other parts of the world and really put a push behind NFC payments.
Putting my flame-retardant clothes on, but if Apple were to 'invent' tap and pay with their next device, the whole world would move very quickly to get on the bandwagon. Google should have similar ambitions.

Pay was working for me last night as it had for weeks. When I heard the rumbles, I checked using safteynet helper and it failed. Just to make sure I tried to pay with it and it failed.
Hopefully this is temporary, but it seems Goggle is being pretty aggressive with patching any issues, so it will be "iffy" at best. At least we don't have to answer anymore, "How can I get Pay to work with my ROM" questions.
Some more info; Being the check is made via an API and is server side, you can't downgrade any app to get it to work. While Chainfire is a deity and I doubt it will take him too long to pop in a fix, Google has an army and cash and if this is important to them, which it is, they will beat him sooner or later. You can un-root and use Pay, then reroot.
For me, while Pay was fun, I've carried a wallet and plastic forever, so it's a no brainer for me, custom rom it is.

I second that... I love v4a way too much to go back to stock. Android Pay is ...uh "a cute little gimmick" thats it. Most of the relevant places won't even let you use it. I have my RFID wallet and that's safe enough for me. Using AP out in public is just a way to show off and get your phone stolen quicker. Besides I'm not giving Google my fingerprint. So I'll stay on custom ROMs that's why I bought a Nexus, that's why anyone buys a Nexus. If Google is going to start locking down there devices like Apple and Samsung... Then I might as well buy THE best locked down phone out there and thats the iPhone...hands down.
People buy Nexus phones because of the customization possibilities. Let's face it at the end of the day customization is all the Nexus and other phones like it have going for if... That's why I own one.

I think it's better like this. If you want to use android pay, stay on stock. Android pay shouldn't have worked with root to begin with.

True I have Nexus 6 and a 6p...I'll just keep one of them stock with Android Pay and the other will be my toy to play around with custom ROMs. Easy to swap out a sim card. Easy fix

It bothers me admit that I cant do anything and everything I want to an item I bought and own (Legally of course), especially a Nexus. I root, I accept liability, end of story. But we all know how accepting liability means nothing today.
I understand why Google is doing what they are with Pay and security, rooting makes the device less secure according to the banks. I used Wallet a lot, but I'm sure Google had a concern being they were holding the liability on that vs. Pay and the banks.
Pay was convenient for sure, but I always have to have my drivers license with me and I always have some plastic and having a feature rich rom beats Pay any day, I think it's an easy choice.

Interesting read, guess I'm going back to standard root. Root is the only way for me to use Verizon wifi hotspot on a unlimited plan.
