Locked Bootloader / Updating - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I think I know the answer but wanted to validate. If I leave the bootloader locked on my device and download a factory image from Google, cannot I just put the zip on the sdcard storage and run it through recovery to update? I don't think that I need to unlock the bootloader do I? I am trying to keep everything stock for now, but updates are a big reason I wanted this phone. Also don't want to break Android Pay. Thanks in advance.

locked or unlocked, you arent flashing a factory image in TWRP

Let me rephrase the question based on the article below. Does this still work with the Nexus 6P to do this with a locked bootloader?

you can update via recovery with locked bootloader but you need update file.. Not factory image..

Just unlock your bootloader and flash a new ROM on your phone. Most of the ROMs available for our phone have that update or better already on the ROM.

Thanks, but I don't want to take the route of custom ROMs, sorry.
I had to unlock my bootloader first using RSDlite and the small .sbf file (pudding.rar) Click here to download
My bootloader was supposed to be already unlocked but I guess the updated firmware didn't realize it. I couldn't run fastboot flash without getting an error
I then rooted by flashing preinstall.img and running commands to install the superuser binary and .apk. Instructions here
I don't know of a way to root 4.5.141 without unlocking the bootloader first. If you find a way let me know

Same thing I used... different source. Still it requires an unlocked bootloader to flash images.
I believe the OP is looking for a root option that will work with a locked bootloader.

It's kind of a "Been there, done that" kind of thing from my Win Mob days. lol
I am pefectly happy with stock Atrix ROMs, and just want to be able to retain root or re root to use a couple of apps like Titanium Backup.
Has anyone with an unlocked bootloader/rooted Atrix tried the update?
I like to stick with the stock rom for now but I haven't found directions for updating to 141 yet. I'd like to keep root and not hard brick my Atrix...After the 2nd time Moto might get suspicious
I wasn't able to use the OTA updates once I rooted (even before I unlocked my bootloader). Of course, that could be Bell building in a check. I even tried unrooting (using GingerBreak) and that still wouldn't allow me to use an OTA update.
I would think you'll have to root, unlock bootloader, and then flash an firmware file from this tread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125944.
Actually, you're right in that the OTA update will probably fail without me going to a more "out of the box" state. I suppose I'd have to first create a nandroid, a titanium backup then flash my phone with a 4.5.91 stock image using fastboot, do the OTA, then re-root, and restore the titanium backup to get back to where I was. And if anything fails restore from my nandroid.
Does that sound right?
I've heard there could be issues relating to going back to a locked bootloader file. So I'm not sure on specifics there. I just run CyanogenMod to avoid all that stuff.

So...in fastboot mode, you were able to run fastboot flash preinstall preinstall.img and thus successfully create the "preinstall\" partition with the necessary files on your phone without getting an error message???
My bootloader was unlocked long ago but I still couldn't flash the preinstall partition without running the pudding unlock .sbf first. Idk
I wasn't even able to boot into fastboot without unlocking the bootloader first.

yep, followed all of the steps and every one is successful. I'm very risk-averse when it comes to messing with my phone, so I've never unlocked my phone. Only root.
I love how no one is answering your question just telling you to unlock your bootloader...
I downloaded the ota update, installed and got failed to boot 4 starting rsd node.. i had unlocked bootloader before update help please!! I pulled the battery for now.

[Q] Software update using sideload and fastboot

Hi this is my first post and i hope its in the correct place and all
My nexus 7 (2013) is stuck in an android update circle where it constantly fails.
I tried to so the update to jss15q 4.3 using sideload where got so close but it said "signature verification failed" why could that be and can i stop it needing a verification?
I then tried to do it using fastboot and got so close again but got
:checking version-bootloader failed"
:device version-bootloader is "flo-03.05"
:Update requires "flo-03.14"
is there a way to correct either of them?
I am not rooted and i have downloaded the jss15q from developers google themselves (and i have debugging enabled)
Thanks for any help
Joe

Follow this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2382051 to unlock the bootloader (your data on the device will be lost). Make sure you reboot the device at least once after unlocking and before you do anything else with it!
After that you can flash or boot TWRP and try to install the update with TWRP, if that fails you can flash a full factory image (the above thread contains all the information needed).

What exactaly do i have to do on that page to be able to continue the methods i am trying to use? If i just unlock the bootloader willi be able to update the boot loader from version-bootloader "flo-03.05" to "flo-03.14" then download jss14q using fast boot or is it not that easy?
Thanks again
P.S I dont want to root yet and Is it possible to just update the bootloader without unlock bootloader or do you have to unlock before you can update?
Thanks
If you want to use fastboot and the factory images you need to be unlocked.
Which file did you feed it when you "sideloaded" it? It needs to be the OTA file.

Hi I used the image from Google developers for nexus which was a zip file. Where could get the ota file from.
By unlocking do you mean just unlocking boot loader?
Thanks Joe

Yes, bootloader must be unlocked to use the factory image restore.
As to the zip file, the zip file from the google developer site is a factory image. It is not meant to be sideloaded, only used in fastboot-style restores.
If you want to go the sideload route, what you want is the appropriate OTA zip (JWR66N->JSS15Q, JSS15J->JSS15Q), which you can get in the download section of this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2415497
If you'd rather do the factory image to JSS15Q, then I suggest you unlock the bootloader and use this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=44888268#post44888268
Personally, I'd go the factory image restore route, it is less hassle.

My boot loader is unlocked

I have unlocked my boot loader on day one. Never done that before so now I'm wondering if I will still be getting OTA updates. I unlocked in case I wanted to flash so I don't lose user data.
Will I still be getting OTA updates with an unlocked boot loader?
Yes. You would still get OTA update notifications with a rooted/modified system, but it won't let you install it. If you never modified anything other than simply unlocking, you will be able to install the OTA without issue.

yes, you'll get OTA, assuming you didn't do any modification to any partitions (other then user) you can take OTA.. I just did myself and now I'm on 6.0.1)
Thank you guys. I'm still waiting on 6.0.1. Nothing has been done except unlocking boot loader and I am not rooted.

Good. That's the reason I unlocked boot loader when I got the phone. Awesome. Might play with that this weekend. Loving 6p and huawei watch. I'm all set
Same here, enjoying phone with watch)
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
Just make sure when you flash them you follow the directions. For many of the files you have to flash them, reboot to bootloader, flash the next one, reboot to bootloader, etc. If you miss a reboot or reboot to system instead of bootloader, you could have problems.
Another option if you're not super familiar with flashing is to wait for the OTA ZIP to be posted (not sure if it is yet or not, I used the factory image) and flash that with ADB Sideload mode, which is more similar to a traditional OTA than flahsing the files on your own.
Thank u guys. I got all of the images flashed and in the correct order. Up and running on 6.0.1. Love good old command line commands .

How to re unlock bootloader

If go to stock and relock bootloader for OTA, what is procedure to unlock again? Do you go back to the Moto site for a new code, or will they expect you to have the original unlock code (thus you could be outta luck if you bought the phone used , with an unlocked bootloader.)
The procedure is the same as when you first unlocked, although if you have the original unlock code you can skip getting a new one from Moto's site (it's the same code anyway), same rules apply, it will wipe everything and you must have OEM Unlocking in Developer options enabled as when the bootloader is relocked this option is turned off and must be turned on again manually.
Be aware you do NOT have to lock the bootloader to get an OTA update, the update script and the OTA server do not care if your bootloader is unlocked or not. The essentials are stock recovery and a stock system and boot image (meaning no root, Xposed, etc).

Oh good...I'll try that first when ready . There's a thread somewhere with correct bootimage, recovery, and system I think?

Just look in my sig... if you read there are links to firmware, and instructions to lock and flash, or just flash the factory image. I would recommend flashing the complete system image though, not just the pieces.

Downgrade from 7.1.1 to anything lower with a locked bootloader?

In short, phone is stuck in a bootloop for no reason that I would know.
Out of warranty, so that option isn't available.
I really just need to get the bootloader unlocked, but I can't access the main screen.
I can access the recovery and bootloader, but when I tried doing an ota update through recovery, (even with NUF26K) it kept failing.
I need to be able to flash a full factory image, which is why I need the bootloader unlocked.
Thank you!

Hi... Did the bootloop came from nowhere or what were you doing when it happened?
What error do you get when you sideload the ota?
Tried formatting cache or factory reset?
Edit: You can't downgrade with a locked bootloader.

You will not be able to unlock the bootloader without booting the OS and entering Dev Options to allow "OEM Unlocking". Now that the 7.1.2 beta is out, that OTA is worth giving a shot. I'd certainly try the suggestions above if the beta OTA fails. If a factory reset does not work, you may be able to fastboot format userdata and cache and try the OTA route again.

Completely gave up on this, but I will give you the error when I get home, it was somewhat contradicting.

Maybe there is a way to erase/corrupt the system and bootloader and ota with a 6.0.x? I didnt really like android N

If you erase or corrupt the bootloader then the phone is hard bricked (if it already isn't). I think you need an unlocked bootloader to do that anyways. Any flashing or erasing command in fastboot is going to need an unlocked bootloader. Even if you did somehow manage to delete the bootloader, without the phone being unlocked you can't flash a new one = hard brick.
If your phone is BL locked, you can't access Android, recovery doesn't help, you're mostly out of luck. Some people have said that using MSkips toolkit recovered their phones, but others had no such luck. There's a lot of people in the same boat as you. Others have tried calling Google about the issue despite their warranty status. Your phone is locked and a stock OTA took it out, from the sounds of it. Maybe they'll be willing to work with you. The worst they can do is say no, can't hurt to try. Good luck!

Never really like 7.x and it has been the only OS that has bricked my phone without being rooted.
Unfortunately you can neither use an OTA to downgrade nor flash a factory image without BL unlocked.
And I'm not sure that would help either. Your device corrupted itself for a reason and that might be the flash failing (which the Nougat update exhibited, but Nougat isn't the root cause probably). You could rather wait for a higher OTA and hope.
Any recovery log to post?
How old is the phone? 1 year?
