[Q] Software update using sideload and fastboot - Nexus 7 (2013) General

Hi this is my first post and i hope its in the correct place and all
My nexus 7 (2013) is stuck in an android update circle where it constantly fails.
I tried to so the update to jss15q 4.3 using sideload where got so close but it said "signature verification failed" why could that be and can i stop it needing a verification?
I then tried to do it using fastboot and got so close again but got
:checking version-bootloader failed"
:device version-bootloader is "flo-03.05"
:Update requires "flo-03.14"
is there a way to correct either of them?
I am not rooted and i have downloaded the jss15q from developers google themselves (and i have debugging enabled)
Thanks for any help
Joe

Do you have the LTE version of the nexus or the WiFi version?

Follow this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2382051 to unlock the bootloader (your data on the device will be lost). Make sure you reboot the device at least once after unlocking and before you do anything else with it!
After that you can flash or boot TWRP and try to install the update with TWRP, if that fails you can flash a full factory image (the above thread contains all the information needed).

What exactaly do i have to do on that page to be able to continue the methods i am trying to use? If i just unlock the bootloader willi be able to update the boot loader from version-bootloader "flo-03.05" to "flo-03.14" then download jss14q using fast boot or is it not that easy?
Thanks again
P.S I dont want to root yet and Is it possible to just update the bootloader without unlock bootloader or do you have to unlock before you can update?
Thanks

If you want to use fastboot and the factory images you need to be unlocked.
Which file did you feed it when you "sideloaded" it? It needs to be the OTA file.

Hi I used the image from Google developers for nexus which was a zip file. Where could get the ota file from.
By unlocking do you mean just unlocking boot loader?
Thanks Joe

Yes, bootloader must be unlocked to use the factory image restore.
As to the zip file, the zip file from the google developer site is a factory image. It is not meant to be sideloaded, only used in fastboot-style restores.
If you want to go the sideload route, what you want is the appropriate OTA zip (JWR66N->JSS15Q, JSS15J->JSS15Q), which you can get in the download section of this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2415497
If you'd rather do the factory image to JSS15Q, then I suggest you unlock the bootloader and use this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=44888268#post44888268
Personally, I'd go the factory image restore route, it is less hassle.

As for your question, I do not understand what you are asking, what are you attempting to do with fastboot mode?

If you have the factory image, from Google (and nowhere else), just run the flash-all.bat file. You "may" have to unlock your bootloader prior to running it if you haven't already, and you'll need to have the device in fastboot mode prior to running the batch file too, but once those 2 simple tasks are done, the batch file takes care of the rest.
If your using a toolkit or some other method for flashing a factory image, I suggest stopping, and just doing the above.
This forum is not for any threads for questions... this needs to go to General or Q/A... just download the factory image from Google, reboot into fastboot and run the flash-all script... you don't need to be unlocked...

If im on 4.2 and my device fails to update to 4.2.1, saying me error on recovery, should I only unzip the image from google, put my n10 on fastboot mode and run the flash all script as you said? Will this erase my data? Im just root, haven't unlocked my bootloader.

same question
I've unlocked & rooted & the OTA fails trying to flash the recovery (trying to flash from twrp, duh, can't overwrite).
How should I go about updating the system w/o wiping out everything I already have?
If I fastboot flash_image system will it only overwrite changes to my system partition & leave my data & apps alone?
I've got OTA Root Keeper installed, so I'm hopeful even if I lose root I can get it back easy enough (either way, no biggie; can always reroot, ain't no thang).
tia for any advice.
edit: f-bomb... no 4.2.1 img available for N10 yet...

Nexus 10 hasn't gotten the (JOP40D) images yet which means the only way to get the 4.2.1 update is to get an OTA. I think the OTA link is floating around AndroidPolice and AndroidCentral somewhere but you'll have to look. Whatever images for 4.2.1 on the Nexus 10 are fake because Google hasn't even released them yet.

I already have stock recovery... it's not about the recovery, I think it's because i put aosp browser instead of the default one, and when ota check system/apps, it finds something has changed. Also may be due to the root?

I don't see how that would matter, I used the aosp browser as well, and all I did was put stock recovery back on ..
hmmmm
Maybe you should just flash one of the updated stock/rooted roms in the dev section.

[Q] stock rooted Lollipop OTA fails?

All,
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide. I have a Nexus 4 that I rooted and installed CWM recovery on, but I never installed any new kernels, ROMs, or radios. I'm currently on 4.4.4 and I want to upgrade to Lollipop. The OTA upgrade failed. So I tried returning to stock recovery and doing both the OTA and adb sideloading the OTA zip. Both fail.
The error message is "Package expects build fingerprint of google/occam/mako:4.4.4/KTU84P/1227136:user/release-keys or google/occam/mako:5.0/LRX21T/1576899:user/release-keys; this device has google/occam/mako:4.4/KRT160/907817:user/release-keys." (But I definitely have 4.4.4 on my phone, not 4.4.0.)
The extra difficulty is that I really, really do not want to wipe my phone. I have a lot of apps with a lot of configuration and other user data. So is there anything I can do? I guess I should try unrooting somehow? Or is there some other zip I can download that, through some type of recovery, will install the OTA without doing this check and also without wiping me?
Thanks again!

OTA wants complete stock and obviously it doesn't think so about your phone. One option could be to back up to the cloud or some place outside the phone with TiBu (or whatever backup app you trust), then flash lollipop and try restore from TiBu. Another option would be to unroot (Supersu has an option to completely unroot), then retry.
Actually, I figured out what works! This was on a stock rooted device with stock recovery, but I bet it would work with custom recovery too. Instructions modified from https://pay.reddit.com/r/nexus4/comments/1qny3f/howto_update_your_stock_w_lte_nexus_4_without/ .
1. Download the image you want from https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images . Extract it, extract the .zip file inside it too, and collect all of the .img files into one folder.
2. adb reboot bootloader (and wait until the bootloader comes up)
3. fastboot flash bootloader bootloader-mako-makoz30f.img (or whatever file has a similar name, if you got a different image than I did)
4. fastboot reboot-bootloader (and wait until the bootloader comes back up)
5. fastboot flash radio radio-mako-m9615a-cefwmazm-2.0.1701.04.img (or whatever file has a similar name, if you got a different image than I did)
6. fastboot reboot-bootloader (and wait until the bootloader comes back up)
7. fastboot flash boot boot.img
8. fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
9. fastboot flash system system.img
10. fastboot format cache
11. fastboot reboot
12. Don't panic unless you've seen the startup animation for at least 15 minutes without anything else happening.
I lost root, but I imagine re-custom-recoverying and re-rooting won't be any harder than the first time around.
Hi moriarty00,
I'm going to try the same procedure, thank you for posting this.
Can you confirm that your data and app are safe after the upgrade?

Wow, a 12-step program
I simply rolled back my changes, and applying the OTA was as simple as pressing the "restart and install" button Here are some steps:
I used the app Flashify from Play Store to flash stock 4.4.4 recovery. I downloaded the stock factory image from google's own site (this one), used 7zip to extract the archives (tgz and tar), found "recovery.img" and transfered that to my phone. Then chose that file in Flashify.
Uninstalled all apps that made system changes, like Xposed framework and mods, BetterBatteryStats etc.
Removed Root with SuperSU cleanup function
Rebooted for good measure and apply OTA from notification - wait an hour or two for it to complete
Profit (do we still say that on the internet? Getting old here...)
I don't know if certain ways to get root will break the OTA. I used towel-root, and apparently SuperSU was able to undo that completely.

Unfortunately the steps did not work for me, maybe I had some irreversible modifications or I had followed a different rooting procedure.
Or maybe I made a mistake in the upgrading steps.
Anyway, I had to flash the whole ROM and now everything is working fine.
Hey!
Basically I have similar problem with upgrading from 4.4.4 to 5.0 using OTA. Log from TWRP says:
Package expects build fingerprint of google/occam/mako:4.4.4/KTU84P/1227136:user/release-keys or google/occam/mako:5.0/LRX21T/1576899:user/release-keys; this device has google/occam/mako:4.3/JWR66V/737497:user/release-keys.

Phone has been rooted using Nexus Root Toolkit. And as long as there wouldn't be a problem with flashing using adb and wiping all data, there is one setback... My nexus is somehow broken. Communication via USB does not work, at all. Neither phone nor PC sees other device. Certified LG service centre nearby said that it is problem with main board, so generally repair is unprofitable.
So question is: How do I update to 5.0 and then root, without USB connection to my PC?

Rooted 5.0.... how to upgrade to 5.1.1

Is there is an easy to do this without having to wipe everything and start over fresh?
Will this work? http://forum.xda-developers.com/general/paid-software/flashfire-t3075433

I didn't know that there were difficulties with 5.1.1. I used Wugfresh's tool to install 5.1.1 with the "no wipe" option and I had 5.1.1 just fine - but can't figure out how to get root back!! And I need root to expand the storage!! Right now I have a fresh, clean, 5.1.1 install on my NP.
I tried Wugfresh's tool, I sure wish it told me that it didn't work with the firmware that it had already detected!!
I also tried the Chainfire root.img that I used back on 5.0 and it seems to work until I tell SuperSU to update the binaries. At that point it basically times out and asks me to reboot.
What next?! Wait for Wugfresh? Is there another way to root?
I flashed the cm recovery from dhacker and used it to flash the newest beta of supersu. After that the app didn't show up until I installed it from the store but now it works fine
I just want to upgrade it without losing all my stuff (Saved games for my NES ROM, etc...)
Why don't you locate the save data in es file explorer and copy it to the cloud. Reimage nexus player and set up es file explorer, cloud and copy the saved data back to where you stored it.
would anyone be so kind to point me to one of the guides on how to use factory image/OTA to update from 5.0 rooted to 5.1.1? I don't care about keeping my settings, and I don't care about root. just want the latest and greatest.
thanks in advance
The Nexus Player is a Nexus device, and you can always upgrade to the latest version by using the factory images found here: https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images. The procedure to flash a factory image on any Nexus device has not changed since the Nexus One was released, so you can look at any of the guides for Nexus devices.
Essentially it boils down to this: The factory image contains a few files in an archive format. There are a few images within that you need: bootloader (I can't remember what the name of the file is but it's something like xxxxbootloaderxxx.img), system.img, boot.img, recovery.img). Extract those images from within the archive and flash them. You do this by booting into the bootloader, opening a command prompt in the same folder that you downloaded the image files) on your PC and type the following commands:
fastboot flash bootloader bootloader.img
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot format cache
If you also want to start fresh and wipe all your data, execute the following command: fastboot format userdata
Then execute: fastboot reboot
Done.
Notes:
1) You need to extract these files in the same directory as where you downloaded the images before proceeding.
2) if you are using Windows, you need to install the the driver (found here: http://developer.android.com/sdk/win-usb.html)
3) The procedure above assumes your bootloader is unlocked. If not, you will need to unlock it (using: fastboot oem unlock) and it will wipe all your data.

Locked Bootloader / Updating

So I think I know the answer but wanted to validate. If I leave the bootloader locked on my device and download a factory image from Google, cannot I just put the zip on the sdcard storage and run it through recovery to update? I don't think that I need to unlock the bootloader do I? I am trying to keep everything stock for now, but updates are a big reason I wanted this phone. Also don't want to break Android Pay. Thanks in advance.

Let me rephrase the question based on the article below. Does this still work with the Nexus 6P to do this with a locked bootloader?

Stock unrooted device in soft-brick bootloop running 7.1.1

Hi,
So quick summary of what happened. I went to make coffee, came back to desk and my N6P has been stuck in boot loop.
It was running the latest Android 7.1.1 build (NPF26F)
I can access fastboot and recovery fine. However, I can't flash anything from fastboot as the device wasn't unlocked.
I tried wiping data / factory & cache from fastboot and recovery with no difference in result.
I also can't seem to sideload anything as all the OTA's from google come back with 'Can't install this package (%Date of build%) over newer build.
The latest OTA i can find is: 7.1.1 NMF26F (angler-ota-nmf26f-61b4a915.zip)
I also tried the official 7.0 NBD91K (angler-ota-nbd91k-32c2eac8.zip) with the same result.
Is there a different OTA I can use or can I force it to sideload an older version or any other suggestions?
I really don't want to have to deal with my telco. I'll be without a phone for weeks if I have to :'(
I have a phone with the same problem. Haven't gotten an answer yet. I am starting to wonder if it's an issue with the build.

You can unlock bootloader if you have fast boot. The computer needs to recognise your phone. Then just follow the steps in the beginner's guide.

No, unfortunately, you can no longer unlock nexus devices from just the bootloader. You need access to Android OS.

Install Android SDK or find adb mini bundle. Download latest factory images from Google's website. Run this command to sideload the factory image. You DON'T need unlocked bootloader for this command.
HTML:
adb sideload yourFactoryImagesFile

Hi,
...I can access fastboot and recovery fine. However, I can't flash anything from fastboot as the device wasn't unlocked....

You never went into Developer Options and toggled the "allow OEM Unlock"? If not, you will not be able to unlock bootloader via fastboot.
And are you positive you did a proper "factory reset" from recovery? From stock, this should get you out of a boot loop. The naming convention Google used for DP2/Public Release was screwed up and I've seen others reporting the inability to flash OTA's but the solution was to flash the full Google image. As someone else suggested, until a new OTA hits with a newer (higher) number, you may be out of luck. Maybe someone with more experience can help with perhaps altering the OTA signature?

Unfortunately as mentioned in original post 'I also can't seem to sideload anything as all the OTA's from google come back with 'Can't install this package (%Date of build%) over newer build'

Yup never did it :'(
Didn't think I needed to unlock / root my devices anymore since I can get all the functionality out of stock android these days. Though now I feel like I'm being punished for not unlocking it :'(
I'm positive I did a factory reset from recovery. I do believe flashing a full google image would fix the issue, but im unable to from fastboot as device is locked and sideload images appear to be older :'(
Really sorry to hear this, and I know being without the phone even for a day or two is inconvenient at best. Could be critical for your work or school. Most every bootloop I have encountered, I've been able to fix by re-flashing the kernel. Either stock or custom... like EX Kernel. Have you ever played with WugFresh's NRT? You can temp flash TWRP and maybe temp flash or flash the kernel? This probably won't work with a locked bootloader If you could just start the OS, you could toggle the OEM unlock. At a minimum, TWRP will give you a file manager, MTP file transfer, wiping and other tools. If you have time, it may be worth a try. Other than that, successfully altering the signature of the OTA may work, but I've not seen any work on this, but have never had to look. I'd keep searching for ppl having the difficulty of going from DP2 to Public Release (older/newer) and see if there was another solution other than flashing the full image, which obviously you can't do right now. Good luck, and let us know if you make any progress.
Edit : Read here for possible help. This may work in conjunction with getting TWRP installed via NRT.

Many ppl have had problems sideloading the OTA coming from DP2 to Public Release NPF26F->>NMF26F and not just the 6P. Because the Public release numerically is "older" the OTA will not flash. When unlocked, the solution was to flash the full Google image, rather than the OTA. Why in their infinite wisdom Google did this I have no idea. Options are very slim when your bootloader is locked and you are stuck in a boot loop. OP cannot flash a full image when the NMF26F OTA is parsed as being "older".

I believe it's because the latest OTA on https://developers.google.com/android/ota is 7.1.1 (NMF26F) and my phone is already running 7.1.1 build (NPF26F).

This guy gets it!!! Yeah, I've unlocked a lot of my older devices and am comfortable with 'messing' my devices, but I didn't with the 6p as the stock experience is great now. But now I feel like I'm being punished because my device is dead with no recourse for action. Unless google release a newer full OTA.
If you haven't given up yet and gone back to the carrier with the phone, try the NRT toolkit to temp flash TWRP, and then FORMAT each partition, then try to reflash OTA with TWRP. Under "Advanced Utilities".

This will work on a locked device? I'll give it a crack and report back.

Firstly your link is broken: It's http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/general/guide-fool-noob-proof-to-clean-installs-t3518311
Secondly as I've mentioned a few times including the OP. The device is locked. You need access to Android OS to unlock. It can not be done just from bootloader. So this does not work, but thanks for posting the suggestion anyway.
