Use An Android Phone As A Dashcam - Repurposing Old Devices

Use An Android Phone As A Dashcam
This is at least the 60th car accident I've been in this year. I swear it's not my fault but as soon as the judge sees my driving record, I'm toast! I've been telling myself that I'm going to get a dashcam for the past few years and I just never get around to it. If a dashcam is just a camera that starts recording when the car is moving, then why can't I just use that old Android phone that's collecting dust in my BDSM chamber? Well now you can!
This will work best with a phone that has lots of storage or an SD card slot.
To convert your phone into a dashcam, you'll want to use the app DailyRoads Voyager.

You'll want a sturdy window mount to get the best footage. you can find them on Amazon for around $20.
Here are some of the features you'll get with the DailyRoads Voyager app.
Background video/photo capture, with optional buttons over other applications
Auto start and shutdown based on car dock detection and related options
Videos/photos are timestamped & geotagged
Automatically determine street address of retained videos/photos
Display videos/photos location on a map
Display speed, elevation, timestamp and GPS coordinates on videos/photos
Option to change speed units (km/h, mph) and date format
Overheating protection
GPS can be disabled to reduce power consumption
Brightness adjustment option allows less distraction when driving at night
Built-in file manager, video/photo browser
There are several apps that offer dashcam recording but this one definitely has the most useful features. Give it a shot and stop putting off getting that dashcam!

This is a great idea! I am going to try this out with my old phone.

This looks great, going to give it a go with an old phone. One question, can you have the phone screen off while driving and it still records or does it need to be on?

The screen has to be on but you can just set it to be very dim.

AutoGuard supports background recording:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.hovans.autoguard

This is a nice idea that maybe 90% of the people already looking for a dash camera thought about.
The real problem here is not finding a suitable application (like the one you thoughtfully suggested) but having your phone actually behave like a normal dash camera: turn on when the car turns on, turn off after you turn off your car. Especialy, not having the huge delay in starting up as every android phone has: a dash camera starts up (I mean from totally off, with a dead battery sitting idly in there) in just a few seconds.
The first problem might be solved with tasker, joining the "charger on/off" event to the video recording app, the second one is not easily solvable IMO.
I wouldn't know tho, since I own a chinese dash camera which sadly has no GPS, but which I paid less than any decent second-hand android phone (16€ because I wanted a "good" one) and worked as intended straight out of the box without any intervention on my part other than setting up the resolution

Well, the solution is not let the phone switch off. I don't think its much of a problem considering the fact that it will be connected to the charger throught out the drive

Pauses when the veihicle is turned off might drain the battery in standby for so long that the phone could turn off automatically. Chances are also that the old phone you put in your car for this purpose already has a dying battery (not that brand new battery won't die pretty fast by being on charge during most of the time)
Unless you take power from a different outlet than the cigarette lighter, which is powered on only when the car is on, but that in turn will drain the very own car battery, albeit it's got way more power reserves, but still a overdrain risk if your car stays off for long periods.
Having to remember to turn the phone off and on again when you need it is still bothersome, plus as I said it will take some time to be operative when you turn it on.

I thank the op and others for bringing up the two suggested dashcam apps (DailyRoads Voyager & AutoGuard Dash Cam), and I agree that a phone doesn't "act" like a built-in dashcam (e.g., go on and off with the ignition switch) but I wouldn't expect an Android dash-cam app to be as good as a built-in system anyway.
It just needs to work, where I'll test the two suggested dashcam apps on my next road trip, but I will note for others first that I had to loosen my FOSS Google Play Store client to even find the two suggested apps above (both, unfortunately, require GSF and both even more unfortunately, contain ads).
DailyRoads, free, contains ads, requires gsf, rated 4.1, 1M+ installs
AutoGuard, free, contains ads, requires gsf, rated 3.8, 1M+ installs
The goal, of course, would be to find a dash cam that is at least as good as those two but without those two unfortunate developer decisions (which I understand why they choose them).
UPDATE: The AutoGuard Dash Cam app requires a login to a mothership which, even though it allows for "guest", seems like something an app suggested for general purpose use should never need, given the obvious negative privacy implications. Maybe someone can expound on why it needs any login to anything when all it's supposed to be doing is recording onto your own personal device.

just need to trim the dash
check if the xoom fit
start with fiberglass
cut the fiberglass
making the front
i still need a lot of work i will add a phone base (defy) inside the tablet , need to wired a lot of stuff to charge and audio from both devices , add a mic for the phone without losing the OEM stereo
reposition the stereo and all the switch´s , buttons i remove from the dash ,
need to bondo the dash and lot lot lot of sanding
Exactly what i will be doing when the new ride arrives.. Will have to use a 7 inch tab though
Time to get PARANOID bout your ANDROID
Any updates? I'm always intrigued by xoom car/truck integration posts. I'd probably attempt something similar if my G8 didn't rely on the stock screen for HVAC control.
interesting post - will subscribe for updates
Today I will post the rest of the pictures I just need to wet sand to finish it
Sent from my Xoom using Tapatalk
Are you planning to use an OTG adapter mounted in the bezel for USB device hosting? That would be icing on the cake.
Actually I did use the otg also a extra mic, charger, phone base, with charger and audio jack for calls
Apps, tasker, tablet talk, musicpro, waze, and many others
Sent from my Xoom using Tapatalk
Also I forget , I'm gonna use a web cam for a reverse camera, just need to find the correct cable to turn the webcam on/off adding a relay
Sent from my Xoom using Tapatalk
ok lets continue
this is the modification to add my phone base a defy with a custom rom CM7
adding some fabric to avoid scratch
adding bondo and the charger and ogt and a lot of sanding
almost finish but need more sanding
testing some audio connection
adding the usb extension
taking apart a phone charger
taking apart a phone handsfree and remplazing the mic for one bigger
testing the color of the paint still need a lot of wetsanding
adding the new mic to the dash
im still working on the oem stereo adding the switch i remove from the stereo dash
i will add the pictures in a few hours
continuation
the audio and chargers installation
the audio connection phone/tablet/cd changer
the new stereo place and switch
testing the final mount
this is gonna be the phone place i add this cuz if i dont like to take my xoom one day i still can use my phone as head unit
this isn't finish i still need a lot of sanding the worst part and painting this paint is only cuz i get tired and wanna see how will look finish but is far to finish yet , need to add some extensions for the switch
so far the sound is great thanks to tablet talk i dont even need to see my phone anymore , and tasker allow me to turn on off the tablet when the car start
with tasker i add some profiles to turn wifi tether when the charger and audio jack in place on the phone
on the tablet i did more profiles , for day and for night
like turning the screen on while charging, change cpu , brith auto off etc ...
i still need to find the shell command to unmount a usb to adding to the profile but is not a big deal
all this is thinking to remove the audio jacks after i get a xoom dock right know is to expensive in my country to get one and the shippings are to high if i order in other place so until the price get low.
i will take apart a xoom dock and use the circuit to remove the outside jacks for the xoom
looking good - cant wait to see what it looks like 100% complete

[Review] ZGPAX S28 Review!

Hey guys, I recently acquired a ZGPAX S28 and figured I'd share it with you. Some of you may have been around for my development work on the MotoACTV and the Omate TrueSmart smartwatches, among various other phones and tools, so I figured it was time to try my hand at a product review for something that not too many of you have heard of yet.

Let's get down to business! What is it? Well, it looks an awful lot like a Gear 2, but it doesn't run android. However, that's not a bad thing, when you consider its $50 price tag from http://www.gearbest.com, where mine came from. It shipped in a generic "smartwatch" box, as shown in the unboxing video below:

- Micro USB port
- Size 58x39x12.5mm
- Weight 55g
- Accelerometer
- Vibration
- Microphone
- Speaker

You can either watch the video (I'm not a thespian or read the review right here. I decided to wear it for around 5 days prior to writing this, to get a feel for how I'd use it in the real world and how it stacks up to the competition that I have at my disposal. The watch is surprisingly comfortable, as well as stylish. It's very similar in design to the Gear 2, which I enjoy. For reference, I very much dislike wearing my Omate TrueSmart because it is so uncomfortable, but sometimes forget that the S28 is even on my wrist. I plugged it into the wall to let it charge for a little while, with the included microUSB charger, and then connected it to my HTC Desire 610 via bluetooth. I then downloaded the free companion app to my phone, which was also painless due to the QR download code being right on the watch. I basically scanned it with barcode scanner, then sideloaded the APK after it downloaded onto the phone.
Once up and running, you can select which apps from your phone you wish to display on the watch. I used everything from LINE Messenger to my iSmartAlarm home security system. Everything came through to the watch perfectly, and at the settings I selected. If you don't want an app to show up anymore, block it. Simple as that. I found myself blocking Facebook after receiving many many notifications at once and being distracted at work when I didn't need to be. Again, it was all very painless and I was pleasantly surprised. This is something that many Android based watches have problems with. They try to be both a watch and a phone, and can't be the best at either one. I've also had many issues with them not receiving notifications properly, or not receiving ALL notifications that you want to receive, which was not at all the case with the S28.
The watch itself is hard plastic with a metal faceplate and capacitive touch screen that's very responsive to touch, despite what my clumsiness in the video may lead you to believe . I LOVE that it's capacitive for only $50. I was actually expecting much less than I got for my money, to be honest. The screen is bright and relatively easy to read outside. It's not the greatest in direct sunlight, but to be honest, I've yet to find one that is. The only things I noticed myself really wishing for were a shake-to-wake feature of some kind, so I didn't have to press the button every time I wanted to see the time, and a way to remove the analog clock, or at least change it. I much prefer digital myself.
However, again, for the price, you simply can't beat it. My friends were in awe as I showed them the differences between this watch and my usual daily drivers, and I may have even convinced a few of them to give it a try. The watch has 2 functions in particular that I'd not used before, the remote camera and the "anti-lost" function. The first lets you use your watch to actually control the camera on your phone. You can see the viewfinder through the watch and walk around the room to take a picture. Not going to lie, I took a few full body selfies, and no, you can't see them. It worked well, and if you weren't taking a picture, it was also neat just watching the phone's viewfinder through the watch, like a remote security camera. The other feature was called "anti-lost", but is essentially a "find my watch, find my phone" feature, that will let you find the other if you have one of the two.
It has many features you'd find in a typical feature phone, such as SMS, phonebook, calendar, mp3 and mp4 player capability, and an FM radio. The pedometer works well, but you have to physically start it before walking, similar to most fitness apps you'd find on your phone. Again, I was spoiled with my MotoACTV's always-on pedometer. It has a sleep monitor, but I've yet to play with it. Soon, friends, soon. The on-screen keyboard is small, but works well and has many options including predictive text (T9) and handwriting recognition.
I did have one issue with the watch or the phone disconnecting and reconnecting with my bluetooth every so often, but in all honesty, I'm blaming that on the phone more than the watch. It was a cheap phone after all. I will be doing some more testing on that part when I replace the power button on my GS3.
3 things this watch has, that everyone else making watches out there needs to take note on: Built-in microphone, built-in speaker, and vibration function. It's literally a mini phone on your wrist, with decent battery life and talk time. Color me impressed.
If you want to order from the same people I did, here is a direct link. And after speaking to their staff (who are also very nice by the way), they gave me a coupon code for you guys: S28GM, which brings the price down to just under $44. I hope you guys liked the review, and again, if you need to know anything else about it, don't hesitate to shoot me a message! Thanks for reading/watching!

Thanks for the review. There's a review for it already by st7ler, but its good to get a second look, how many days battery are getting from it? Its similar to the U8 Pro, not sure which to buy.
I keep mine turned off at night, and I got 4 days before I recharged it. Not sure exactly how many it'd last though, because I never let it run completely down lol
Thanks. And your typical use for the 4 days was...?
Could you do me a favour and try bluetooth tethering please? [emoji106]
I used it for between 12 and 16 hours each day. And tethering how, specifically? It doesn't do internet pass through, if that's what you mean, but it does receive all notifications through bt tethering. And receives them rather well at that lol
Thanks for the review. Looks good smart watch. Its app connection is stable?
It was stable for the most part, and if it disconnected, it quickly reconnected all by itself. I think my phone was the unstable part.

Shame it can't do bluetooth tethering, it would have not needed a data plan.

@ClearD - are there any functions to control the phone from the watch?
I don't believe so, it's sort of like a standalone watch phone that also reads notifications from your primary phone
It's possible to add new analog look? Or change shortcuts on descop?

XTRONS® Pure Android 4.1.1

Anyone have comments or warnings about the single-din Android head unit here:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0107L1XNY/
It is the D788A Model, with an "Mstar 786" processor, Android 4.1.1 and 1024x600 native display.
I am having to give up on the RoadNavi C315 (winCE) that I bought due to a slew of issues and problems (it's an utter piece of carpola).
Since I have a Fiat 500, it is a SINGLE din opening and very difficult and expensive to convert to dual din. Conversion requires cutting AC ductwork and buying a $200 kit to replace the AC vents with tiny vents on the sides. So I want to avoid that if I can. But single-DIN options are few and far between. The C315 I had before seemed perfect, but the software and hardware are trash.
There aren't many single DIN options, so.... There are a few with Android 4.4, but those have 800x480 resolution, so I would prefer this one despite the slightly older software.
Some questions on the Android 4.1.1 Mstar 786 systems:
1) Some reviews say the factory settings are locked and the passwords given on forums don't work. Manufacturer says this is to keep from damaging the unit. Can this be bypassed? Should I be worried if not?
2) Does this CPU/OS combo normally work with the Bluetooth stack for Torque Pro?
I couldn't find a thread on this model or processor - anything else anyone has to say about it?
I am not rich and already wasted nearly $400 on the C315. I probably won't get a fraction of that back selling it because it has a hardware audio issue. I bought a replacement board, that fixed the problem for two hours before it had the same problem. So I want to make sure I'm not hoodwinked by a piece of trash radio again.
Of course, Android is going to be a requirement. I looked at various MHL/Mirrorlink options and none of them are reliable. I'm sick as ****e of unreliable products.
Replying to my own post. Bad form, I know.
But, I found this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2528349
...
From the looks of it, that's not a great radio. Lots of limitations... *sigh*... looks like I can't get a single DIN 1024x600 that's decent for my car.
May have to go with an 800x480...

What kind of car do you have?
Have you considered trying to make a custom bezel for a double din stereo install in it?
I have a 2004 Dodge Intrepid, which was never intended to have a double din head unit, and I was able to do this with it.
I grafted part of a bezel from a different vehicle that supported a double din into my cars original bezel.

Hi
I know this is now an old thread, but I thought my reply might be useful for anyone lookning at this unit on ebay/aliexpress etc.
I own this unit and its very good (for the money). Good gps reception, good bluetooth and even fairly decent wifi. Its ugly as hell, but thats the main reason I chose it - its face-like-the-back-of-a-bus looks deter potential thieves from stealing it.
Install Navmii on it and its absolutely perfect for GPS navigation. It connects to your steering wheel controls and has loads of connections for speakers, amps, extra usb etc in the back. You can even connect up a reversing cam to it which will automatically change the screen when you put the car into reverse.
It has several different positions for the screen and it will remember your choice, so once you've found the position thats right for your vehicle, it will automatically go back to that position every time the screen opens until you decide to change it.
The only downside to this unit is the manufacturer. Dont expect any support at all from Xtrons as the standard response to any question is "contact your reseller for further advice", even if it was sold directly by them.
A lot of useful android features are locked down "for safety reason of drive"(...) with a pin which they will refuse to give you. Its 3368. Using that pin will not give you access to anything which can brick your unit, but does allow you to access the car settings menu so you can turn off the annoying beep-when-you-press-anything noise, change the car logo, access the equaliser and a host of other useful stuff.
Its got an ancient version of android on it, but it has the full play store and runs Chrome and Navmii perfectly, connects to my phone as soon as I get in the car and also lets me connect my raspberry pi via the aux video in so I have a dedicated trip recorder which is better than any dashcam on the market. Switching between apps is fairly quick and its very customisable, which makes using it whilst driving easy. It has 2 micro sd card slots, one purely for navigation maps and the other for expandable storage.
I wish there was a firmware update for it that I could trust but the only one xtrons have provided is for a double din unit and I'm not going to risk bricking mine until I get a copy of the current firmware as a backup.
I hope this helps anyone looking at this unit and wondering if its worth it. In my opinion, it is.

ATOTO A6 PRO -- User Review

My thoughts and personal experience: This A6 model is a multi-media head unit for automotive vehicles that is essentially an android tablet. It turns on in a second or two after starting my car’s ignition. Advertised functions work except hands free phone calling for which a work around is in progress. The screen is high resolution and brightness is adjustable. I mainly use FM radio, email viewing, listening to songs I recorded to a thumb drive using my computer, I pay attention to the rear backup camera image when in reverse gear and, while driving, am always recording video through my dash camera (a purchase option) for storage on a micro-SD card . The thumb drive and SD card are not supplied with the A6. FM radio brings in 23 stations in my area with good fidelity. Phone pairing was made easy by following the Owners Manual instructions carefully. I'm making and receiving phone calls with good sound quality on both ends. Call volume is easily adjustable but usually not necessary once set to my preferred level.
I haven’t had any luck, however, using Hound (an ATOTO recommended work around) to obtain hands free phone calling. Customer tech support is usually very responsive and spot on by knowledgeable personnel so I’m hopeful they’ll let me know how to get hands free calling worked out when fully developed. I'm surprised to hear that some users say hands free works for them. So I may not have the latest firmware properly installed. Either that or my A6 is buggy. Vacation videos and my prerecorded music play well from my thumb drive. When I use GPS I use it off line to minimize cell phone minutes and charges. If you have unlimited network use, you may prefer online GPS for better turn-by-turn driving guidance. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections between A6 and smart phone were easy to set up. Tip: If you don’t use your car every day, it’s a good idea to turn off the A6 before turning off the ignition. As with the predecessor M4 model, this model draws enough milliamps of current in support of its two-second ready-on feature, that after a few days of being parked, my battery is sometimes too weak to start the car. This is not an issue if you use your vehicle daily. The backup camera is a valuable safety feature, especially at night when it gives almost as bright and sharp an image of what’s behind you as during the day; things behind the vehicle that you could easily miss looking in the rear view mirror. The gesture control feature works but I find it annoying as it requires precise hand movements and a good amount of user practice. I must say, though, that it has quite a bit of WOW value with my buddies. I mainly use it to adjust music volume when I want to demo how it works. The optional wireless steering wheel controller is reliable. I use it for changing stations and music selections and to turn the volume up or down while driving. GPS software is built in for Waze, Google Maps and Tom-Tom.
Tip 2: A word of caution about installation. The section under "Power Harness Connection / Precautions For Making Connection" contains multiple errors. Accordingly, I used only the manual's installation drawings and the list of color coded, labeled harness wire assignments and had no difficulty with installation. I matched the car's radio wiring to the A6 harness, soldered and taped. Most users, however, would be well advised to purchase, if available for their model, the proper wiring harness plug-compatible adapter cable. It will save them time and the installation will be much easier.
As it develops improvements, the company has a good track record of issuing firmware updates at no charge.

Thanks for sharing your review. I suggest you consider using Android Auto using HeadUnit Reloaded. The hands free calling feature through Android Auto works fine on the A6 Pro. As you pointed out, using Android Auto for Navigation might not work well for you if you have limited data plan, but the other functions still work.
I have not noticed that the power drain from ATOTO A6 Pro causing any car battery problems, even after a few days not using the car, but now I'll be on the lookout for this. According to this post, the power drain is quite small and should not cause problem for 15 days. Would be great if someone could measure the power draw of ATOTO A6 Pro while in sleep mode. We may need to to request a solution from ATOTO if it's a real problem.

Thanks for the input, jackohound. I'll give it a try re. hands free phone calling. What's the latest version id of the firmware you have installed on your A6?
I've been told by a mechanic that checked for electrical problems. He said he measured the drain at approx 70 ma. But who knows how accurate that is? He couldn't find anything else as a problem. See if you notice whether your vehicle seems to crank a bit slower or seems more burdened during startup.

I was concerned about this; worried that leaving my car parked for 1 week for an upcoming business trip would be a problem. I contacted ATOTO about this and they stated that the A6 Pro should consume about 7 ma (not 70 ma) when in sleeping mode. They also said that after 7 days of continuous sleeping, the unit will automatically power-down and from that point forward will consume 0 ma.
I removed the ATOTO from the car, connected a switch to the ACC power, and connected a multimeter to the battery (memory) wire. Although my multimeter didn't have enough resolution for a precise measurement, it measured the sleeping consumption at 0.01 Amps, or 10 ma. So I think the ATOTO estimate of 7 ma is believable. At that rate, even after 1 week, a sleeping ATOTO should only consume ~2% of a typical 45 Ah car battery.

I recently went on a trip and left the car parked for over 4.5 days. When I returned to the car, the engine started up without any hesitation and the ATOTO instantly awakened from sleep mode. So I have confirmed that the ATOTO can remain in sleep mode for at least 4.5 days without any significant impact on my car battery.
I have A6 pro for 3 months and have no battery issues, I also had the previous A6 model for a year (during vacations I did not drive, about 2weeks) and had no issues at all.
Regarding calls, google is releasing google assistant for tablets too, so I have it working except for voice calls, what I did is use Autovoice+Tasker and I can make calls by voice commands.
Anynody getting low audio quality on calls but everything else is normal
I just installed the A6 Pro (no gesture) in my 2012 Nissan Xterra. A very tight fit with an aftermarket install kit I had for a previous radio. So far it seems okay from an android "tablet" type system. I'm not overly crazy about the stock launcher, especially the radio app. The mp3 player needs upgrading to something that has a "close" feature on the main screen. Not crazy about having to dive into a second or third layer just to turn the damn thing off.
Is there a way to root this head unit? How about upgrading the OS? Sorry if this has been asked before but I'm not seeing any threads on this topic.

Hey guys, does you contacts sync properly to the head unit? Mine keeps showing up in a weird way? For example Bob Smith will be displayed as SmithBob and changed on my phone

You probably need to post screenshots of your device info page and firmware versions. One though is was this plug and play? or did you have to wire it? If you had to wire it perhaps the one of the power wires is not connected and the device can't keep power to the unit when you turn the car off. These things need access to power to fast boot. Mine has a setting to keep the unit on for a while after shutting car off, but that's not the fastboot option, on mine fast boot is just built in, no settings(that I've seen), which is why it may be hardware or wiring.

everything is wired correctly no extra wires , I contact the seller they told me they basically disable the features so I don't need to mess with it but that's the thing I want to mess with it lol

I guess the question is are they telling you that what you have is normal operation? Seems odd but perhaps they have no Fastboot.

Right and for the most part for most units I would agree with them, but are they saying your unit is designed to cold boot when car is turned off/on?
I'm not sure what they're trying to say I know I've been asking them since May of 2020 about it lol and nothing , I just know like 3-4 of my old androids I had the sleep option ,car settings the extra settings all them other features this one I bought it cause it said it had split screen but only one app opens the split screen which is igo but it closes as soon as I press split screen option and this one also has hdmi put in the back besides it being a 10" because I bought a SUV but it's not working like I want it to , I been thinking of changing like software/mcu I think it is idk . do you think that would be a good option to do ?
I can't speak for what custom firmware options you have, but I can tell you I have no sleep options either, what I have is a single option how long to leave unit active after accessory power is off, but no options for how long to sleep before hard power off. As I understand it most units won't hard power off for several days. I've only seen mine hard boot once when I wasn't pushing the reboot button.
