XTRONS® Pure Android 4.1.1 - Android Head-Units

Anyone have comments or warnings about the single-din Android head unit here:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0107L1XNY/
It is the D788A Model, with an "Mstar 786" processor, Android 4.1.1 and 1024x600 native display.
I am having to give up on the RoadNavi C315 (winCE) that I bought due to a slew of issues and problems (it's an utter piece of carpola).
Since I have a Fiat 500, it is a SINGLE din opening and very difficult and expensive to convert to dual din. Conversion requires cutting AC ductwork and buying a $200 kit to replace the AC vents with tiny vents on the sides. So I want to avoid that if I can. But single-DIN options are few and far between. The C315 I had before seemed perfect, but the software and hardware are trash.
There aren't many single DIN options, so.... There are a few with Android 4.4, but those have 800x480 resolution, so I would prefer this one despite the slightly older software.
Some questions on the Android 4.1.1 Mstar 786 systems:
1) Some reviews say the factory settings are locked and the passwords given on forums don't work. Manufacturer says this is to keep from damaging the unit. Can this be bypassed? Should I be worried if not?
2) Does this CPU/OS combo normally work with the Bluetooth stack for Torque Pro?
I couldn't find a thread on this model or processor - anything else anyone has to say about it?
I am not rich and already wasted nearly $400 on the C315. I probably won't get a fraction of that back selling it because it has a hardware audio issue. I bought a replacement board, that fixed the problem for two hours before it had the same problem. So I want to make sure I'm not hoodwinked by a piece of trash radio again.
Of course, Android is going to be a requirement. I looked at various MHL/Mirrorlink options and none of them are reliable. I'm sick as ****e of unreliable products.

Replying to my own post. Bad form, I know.
But, I found this thread:

...
From the looks of it, that's not a great radio. Lots of limitations... *sigh*... looks like I can't get a single DIN 1024x600 that's decent for my car.
May have to go with an 800x480...

What kind of car do you have?
Have you considered trying to make a custom bezel for a double din stereo install in it?
I have a 2004 Dodge Intrepid, which was never intended to have a double din head unit, and I was able to do this with it.
I grafted part of a bezel from a different vehicle that supported a double din into my cars original bezel.

Hi
I know this is now an old thread, but I thought my reply might be useful for anyone lookning at this unit on ebay/aliexpress etc.
I own this unit and its very good (for the money). Good gps reception, good bluetooth and even fairly decent wifi. Its ugly as hell, but thats the main reason I chose it - its face-like-the-back-of-a-bus looks deter potential thieves from stealing it.
Install Navmii on it and its absolutely perfect for GPS navigation. It connects to your steering wheel controls and has loads of connections for speakers, amps, extra usb etc in the back. You can even connect up a reversing cam to it which will automatically change the screen when you put the car into reverse.
It has several different positions for the screen and it will remember your choice, so once you've found the position thats right for your vehicle, it will automatically go back to that position every time the screen opens until you decide to change it.
The only downside to this unit is the manufacturer. Dont expect any support at all from Xtrons as the standard response to any question is "contact your reseller for further advice", even if it was sold directly by them.
A lot of useful android features are locked down "for safety reason of drive"(...) with a pin which they will refuse to give you. Its 3368. Using that pin will not give you access to anything which can brick your unit, but does allow you to access the car settings menu so you can turn off the annoying beep-when-you-press-anything noise, change the car logo, access the equaliser and a host of other useful stuff.
Its got an ancient version of android on it, but it has the full play store and runs Chrome and Navmii perfectly, connects to my phone as soon as I get in the car and also lets me connect my raspberry pi via the aux video in so I have a dedicated trip recorder which is better than any dashcam on the market. Switching between apps is fairly quick and its very customisable, which makes using it whilst driving easy. It has 2 micro sd card slots, one purely for navigation maps and the other for expandable storage.
I wish there was a firmware update for it that I could trust but the only one xtrons have provided is for a double din unit and I'm not going to risk bricking mine until I get a copy of the current firmware as a backup.
I hope this helps anyone looking at this unit and wondering if its worth it. In my opinion, it is.

New use for Samsung Car Dock

Today I moved my car stereo lower in the dash and mounted my Samsung Tab car-dock in the original stereo location.
Took me all of about an hour, cost me $10 (in addition to the dock I already had). I am fairly pleased with it.
I was glad to find that I did not have to extend any of the wires going to the original car stereo. They were plenty long enough to put the stereo down in where the little pocket used to be. All I had to do was cut the back of the plastic pocket out, and use the stock bolts to bolt through the plastic in to the body of the stereo. Part one done...
Then I used a piece of 2 inch wide steel bent in to form as a bracket for the Samsung dock. I mounted the new bracket to the original stock stereo mounting bolts. Then I cut a piece of black plastic to entirely close off the double din opening. This was hot glued and epoxied in to place from the rear so it is nice and clean. Part two done.
I then had to cut the last portion of the Samsung Tab mounting arm off. All I needed was the small portion where the dock actually bolts to it. This allowed me to still use the swivel to get the right mounting angle. The ONLY issue I had was that I wanted to mount it close enough to the dash that I had to cut a notch in the stereo bezel to accommodate the power cord to the dock. Not a big issue, and from the driver side its not visible at all.
I then mounted the dock to the bracket through a small hole I cut in the piece of black plastic I had mounted.
Originally, the TAB was mounted via the dock on top of my dash. I like this position much better!!!
Here is the end product.

Sorry, I meant to post this in accessories. Can a mod move it for me?
Does the tab tie into your stereo over bluetooth or a line out? Or do you just use it for navigation?
Works perfectly via bluetooth. I was having some skipping issues, but they were cleared up with the last update of Car Dock. They now turn off wi-fi when in dock, which is what was causing the issues.
Very nice setup. How does the navigation work on the SGT.? i.e. is there any delay or lag. are you on Edge when using the nav.?

Google Navigation works as well on the SGT as any other phone - better in fact due to the higher resolution of the Tab. Just needs a reasonable 3G signal - which isn't hard to find. For me it's the best satnav software out there.
I live in Southern CA, so there is no issue with getting a signal. The Navigation works perfectly for me. A couple years ago I spent $2000 for an indash navigation, DVD player. What a waste that was... Its amazing how technology has changed in just a couple years.
I now have full Internet, navigation, phone and multi-media capabilities in my dash AND its removable!
Very nice work. The scarf is a nice touch too.
interesting, Ive never thought of installing it there.

The Ap. is CarHome Ultra. Auto-launches when plugged in to the dock.
Thanks for sharing your DYI
Wow, it looks nice on your dashboard. I'll try to replicate this when the dock is available in my country (Thailand)

A real 1 DIN Android unit

Hi,
I'm looking for a head unit that would actually be 1 DIN, including the screen (so no pop-up screen, no tablet-ish on a stick). I wish I had more space but I have to make do with this:

If the screen doesn't fill the whole slot (because that's a weird form factor), that's ok. I'm semi-tempted to buy a used Parrot Asteroid Classic but it's sooooo outdated that I'm think I'd prefer my tape player.
Alternatively, just a screen (which would be plugged to a Raspberry Pi or whatever) could be a step forward.
I'd be grateful for any piece of information.
I'm hoping to be able to achieve something like that:
I had a pyle slide out touchscreen in my ranger. I just had to adjust the screen so it didn't hit the vent above it similar to your setup. What I did instead though was remove the vent and block it off above the single din. that made a nice slot for the screen to fit when extended. Wish I had pictures but I switched trucks and haven't swapped stereo decks yet. Used the back up camera input to plug in whatever I wanted, bypassed the e brake safety, and wired the control for the camera to a switch. You could do something similar

Something like this i think may fit ..... See the exact dimensions.
Removing the air vents is an idea but I don't wand to hack the dashboard, the car is becoming something of a collectible.
I've checked all the Joying's website, the smaller they have is like 95mm in height, that's still much taller than 1 DIN (50 mm).
I just installed the Joying 95mm one in my BMW Z3 some days ago. It still needs some work, but should fit pretty well in the end without hacking the dashboard. I'll post some pictures tomorrow.

I didn't hack it, its removable just like yours. If you consider it collectible I wouldn't change the deck then either way.

As promised, here's some pictures. As you can see, the unit has snap-in connectors to mount the panel on the base unit. On the panel, the position of the connectors can be changed to set it higher or lower:
Here I used the highest position possible. This way, it sits right below the vents but does not block them.
Currently there are two problems: There is too much distance from the dashboard and the sides are uncovered.
I already modified the original connectors to shorten the distance (initially it was like 5mm more), but that's the maximum possible with the modification. Additonally, in this position the connection cable will bump into the dashboard with shorter distance because it sits above the radio bay:
So I put the panel one step lower. This way it does cover the heating controls about 1-2 mm, but I think that's fine.
This way, the connection cable is just in front of the radio bay so it would be possible to shorten the distance between radio and panel:
I'm just constructing new mounting connectors with shorter distance. If this works out, I'll also construct 3d-printed side covers to have it perfect.
Many thanks for the pics! Not a fan of the look but maybe I can live with it...
Is that the 6.2"?
Yes, it's the 6.2" one. I've now finished the new mounts and put it a little lower because it looks better that way. The air vent controls are partly covered by the screen, but still useable without problems.
My first set of 3D-printed mounts melted when the car was in the sun, now I made a new set with a more temperature-stable material (ABS instead of PLA). Hope this one will work
@WhiteTitane did you find a solution (nice S54 by the way, clownshoe or roadster?)
I've the same desire for my roadster, did you find a solution that didn't crowd the dash quite as much as the 6.2"?
Hope you did the fan mod on the 1-din chassis ? Older cars tend to have heater air leaks that could cause this install to overheat. Probably best to have the fan blowing into the head unit, and exhausting via the front cable hole.

WIP: Custom Headunit building Nissan Qashqai J10

So long time lurker here, and probably in the wrong section, if so, really sorry and please move it to the correct section if needed.
I have been using an MTCB unit ( Hui Fei Type ) In my Nissan Note, tweaked it, upgraded it to android 6 and everything worked fine. Sold the car, sold the headunit. and now I have an Nissan Qashqai J10 (2009) .
This car has an pretty nice head unit in it, with navigation and rear cam feed like the one below :
{

}
So removing this one and replacing it with something else is something I want to avoid. After some research I had fount out there are some models that have the head unit navigation display above the traditional headunit
This gave me some new opportunities and I went ahead and bought the parts needed :
Dashboard section on ebay including the top screen
7 Inch Display from AliExpress
USB Dab+ Adapter
USB GPS receiver
Development poard to solder parts on. with the same size as the raspberry pi
12V Relay to act as switch on key ignition
12V - 5V 3A Step down to get power from the car to the development board. ( 2 pcs )
original Nissan ISO wiring harness just in case for the parts
2 push buttons ( 1 - Latching as power switch for this head unit, 1 momentary for hard reset )
FM Transmitter ... (In hindsight I do not like this idea because someone else could possible listen to it if driving close to you..., going to use the AUX on the original head unit instead )
I already had an Raspberry Pi 3 B+ lying around here and wanted to use this but found out quickly enough that is not an option because I really want to use Android 7.1+
After some looking around I have to decide what to buy next :
Alpine64 ROCK64
Alpine64 ROCKPro64
Libre Computer - AML-S905X-CC (Le Potato)
The first and the latter are roughly Raspberry Clones and therefor will fit for sure in the reserved space behind the screen. The pro version is going to be probably to big and the extra compute power is not really necessary.
I already received the dashboard part including the top screen. Sadly the screen is not functioning and has some really specific connectors so I removed the original display from the case and build the AliExpress Display in the case. it fits almost perfectly but needs an extra bezel to fill up some small gaps. (pictures will follow)
After installing Raspbian on the raspberry and some frustrations with the 7 inch display (which worked good, but the touchpanel was broken and did not detect touch 10mm from the borders all around, I'm awaiting an new one at the moment )
The up comming week i have to wait for the majority of the ordered parts and will post updates ones I get them.
Dear Sebastiano,
May I ask you if you managed to succeed with this project? I have a Nissan QQ with the same version of screen on the top of my dashboard, and I would like to replace it with an Android unit, but I'm not sure which one would fit there, and if this is possible at all, so it would be a huge help to know how your project ended.

"
I know this is sort of raising the Dead, and I'm dictating this so forgive any crazy autocorrect errors, but I just bought an in-dash Android operated stereo/navigation/other stuff for my service truck so I could have navigation available but also be able to check any incoming messages from clients, etc. For what it's worth, I bought it off of "Wish", and to my astonishment it's exactly what I wanted although I had to rewire the dash in my Ford because they have a unique wire harness on this thing.
ANYWAY... This thing is running Android auto although it was advertised for Android 9.1 or something. I hooked it up in my apartment to see if it was going to be a piece of trash but it worked quite well, downloaded apps, etc. Once I spent 2 hours rewiring my dash to interface with this thing, I had this same issue that is being discussed. On top of that, it was flipped vertically as well.
The factory reset option had no effect. The reset button that is supposed to provide a factory reset had no effect. I did find a software setting once I figured out what was happening to reverse the vertical flip. I went into developer options and turned on the visualize screen tap option so I could start figuring out how to get into different parts of the system while tapping in sort of a reversed mode. After I took about five runs at it I eventually found in a locked factory settings area. I switched the option and everything immediately started working correctly. This was NOT in the Android settings, it was in the factory settings for the hardware itself. I do not know what the comparable option would be on a mobile device. There must be a setting option somewhere though.
Just thought I'd share because this was driving me crazy and the only mention I've seen about it when I was searching for a solution was this thread."
I have a photo I tried to include however when I try to upload it I get a security error message. If I can find a way to upload it, I will.

Looking for help with new iDoing PX6, Android 10, rk3399 hexacore

I've struck out when looking for fixes or help with this Android unit.
I have a few issues with it that I'm hoping people have solutions for.
Capacitive buttons don't illuminate anywhere except in the "Element" settings where you can choose what color they are. No matter if I set display mode to dark or light, the touch buttons don't ever illuminate. Not a huge deal, but I would like them to be lit up red to match my other lighting (2011 Subaru STI).
Auto shutdown after ACC power loss. There is a setting for this and it's on "auto" by default. Setting it to any setting doesn't have any affect. I would like it to be 5 or 6 seconds, but 30 seconds is the lowest. No matter what, the unit shuts down after about 2 seconds, which is manageable but not optimal for me since I have keyless push-button start and can't go from car running to accessory power without the car shutting off first. And the push-button start takes about 1 full second to register presses, so I have to get the timing just right if I want the HU to avoid shutdown.
Auto brightness does nothing. During the night, it's still at full brightness and using the white/light theme, not the black/dark theme. I figure I can use an app like Lux to control the actual brightness and just leave the theme set to dark. The HU does not have an orange illumination wire like all other stereos I've installed, so I figured it had a light sensor on it but it doesn't seem to. Not 100% sure yet.
I don't think there is a solution to this, but more like I'm curious if other Chinese Android units all do this: white-noise humming that you can hear when there is no music playing. Sure, I can't hear it when my car is running, but there is an audible hum in all speakers and subwoofer. I've minimized it by turning down the gain on my amplifier and subwoofer, but it's annoying and reminds me of cheap crappy stereos that don't filter out noise like this one, but this one is $360 and not cheap in my opinion. I'm curious if the Joying units do this when using the pre-outs specifically. This iDoing unit does not have an amp built in, despite it saying on the page that it has 4x50W output. Just looking at the output label, you can see there are zero speaker output wires.
Is there a way to do manual updates on this unit? When I search for MCU and System updates, it doesn't find any. I guess maybe it's up to date and there is no fix for the 3 problems I mentioned above.
I don't see any custom ROMs for this unit, just for the Android 9 PX6 units. I am going to check out some custom launchers since the iDoing launcher is super basic and uninspiring. Then again, I am mostly just inside of Apple Carplay the whole time, so the launcher doesn't matter much.
Thanks for any help!

Really wished I would have seen this unit before I ordered and installed mine:
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32950726060.html
It's got 8 cores, A75 and A55s, and has LTE modem built in, which I really wanted since I have an free phone line that I don't really use through T-Mobile. That unit also comes with adapters to use the OEM aux and USB ports in the center arm rest / storage, and I think a 20-pin harness to plug directly into the Subaru.
It probably has the same issues I'm talking about in my original post though, so I shouldn't fret....I guess. BUYERS REMORSE IS REAL, UGH!
So I just ordered the uis 7862, Even Idoing say the Px6 version is more "mature", but I opted for the faster proc and 4g and hoping the bugs get nailed soon. Keep in mind the 4g per IDoing will only work with t-mobile and i question even that(but am hopeful).
I went with IDoing for two main reasons. Primary reason being they are the only ones who support the HK audio in m 2018 WRX, and second they are extremely responsive to question(at least during sales). It took me 3 days to get a "No" from Joying, whereas I have spent nearly 2 hours on chat with Idoing. They also upgraded my shipping to DHL at no cost and am expecting my unit on friday(one week from order).
There is very little on the IDoings here apparently. Look forward to hearing how you are making out, with luck i'll have mine installed this weekend.
On your issues... Have you reached out to IDoing? They seem genuinely interested in helping.
Hoping your buzzing issue either is uncommon or irrelevant when using the canbus adapter to the HK.
I'm a verizon sub, but if it works with tmobile I may get a cricket wireless plan just for the car.
Any issues loading apps on the unit. I really just need fubo, spotify, a flac player, youtube, and waze, but loading other apps would be cool.
Idoing are a reseller of units. What hardware did you buy? Guess you might not know until it arrives, but the picture above lists an MTCE unit (mtcd)...wondering why this thread isn't in the MTCD section.
All of these chinese android grey boxes have bugs, they all copy each other and all make the same mistakes, some horrendously worse than others, but they're all buggy.
If you have started from low expectations, the unit might work out.

I'm not the OP, but I ordered a UIS7862 unit specifically for the WRX.
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32869243167.html
with the canbus for my HK system.
Based on reviews from other WRX owners and my discussions wit IDoing, my expectations are moderate. I know i'm taking a risk but the looks and fit of this for my car(again from reviews) is far superior to my kenwood double din and kit from crutchfield. Add to that I really hate AA and Mirrorlink.
After dealing with Wireless AA and mirrorlink issues with both my last and current car, it would need to be pretty buggy for it to not surpass that experience.
I'm pretty experienced with android development, so i can dig in and perhaps work around some of the issues, depending on what they are. Obviously if the Canbus is a failure then it's a non-starter.
I just want a hand full of apps to run and to be able to wifi tether to my phone, or use a tmobile sim if by some miracle the 4g modem works. If AA works that's a plus, but my whole reason to buying this is to avoid AA and of course the OEM look of this.
Again for the cost (less than the kit to wire my existing kenwood) like most people here, I'm willing to take the risk and if it doesn't work out then I go back to the kenwood and either return this or rip it apart as a science experiment.
with regards to the illumination of the keys, did you wire the Illum(orange wire)? also on mine at least you need to have the head lights on for the Illumination to work.
Did you ever fix the buzzing sound?

No, the subwoofer output was unusably bad and the hum at all times is only audible if I'm in the car with the engine not running and the stereo turns on with no music. And this is with my amp turned up pretty high. If I play radio at 50% volume, it will hurt my ears, so most people won't have this issue unless they also use an amp and turn it up fairly high.
I was using a USB-connected Carlink adapter for more reliable wireless Carplay, and it has slightly better resolution than the ZLink version. However, this Carlink adapter loses connection when I hit 24psi of boost in my car. It makes no sense. The adapter doesn't physically come out or anything, but the iDoing loses connection to it. I started using the ZLink again and it's working pretty well, though sometimes it's slow to connect and I can still tell the resolution is a little lower but it's still fine.
