I will be buying the s7, if the rumors about micro SD return prove true. - Samsung Galaxy S7 Guides, News, & Discussion

I have been trying to figure out what my next phone will be, and dreading the possibility of having to crawl back to apple. My choice is through my company. It's either a samsung, a blackberry, or an iphone. I currently am still on the s5. If they truly do bring back the micro SD on the s7, I cannot wait to be a happy owner. If not, I am torn. Please make the right decision samsung.

The rumor of the MicroSD slot returning is definitely one that caught my interest. Plus the fact that they are supposed to be working with Google to improve TouchWiz makes things sound even better. I am interested in the S7 with al the rumors going around, but I still want to see what the other companies have to offer before I make my choice.

Given my choices, the decision will be easy, assuming the micro sd card returns. I personally would also love to see the return of remove-able battery, but I can live without that. Whatever phone I wind up with, is going to go right into a protective case, so the solidness and elegance of the build is of little importance. Nice, but for me, form is trumped by function. The S6 was too much of an iPhone wannabe. I'd rather get an iPhone. The ability to expand storage on a phone that is also highly customizable, that is what I love about my S5. It is like having a phone that is also a highly powerful computer. I can sync with my home pc remotely, pull files over to myself, etc. These are features you lose with iPhone without jailbreak, but there are things IPhone does better than Samsung. It would be a real toss up. The return of the sd feature alone, would make my decision for me.

Well, the choices you have right now make the S7 an easy choice, but remember this is a new year and therefor new phones from other companies later on. With the Snapdragon 820 in effect now I rather wait a few months to see what happens even though I do like the way the S7 is looking.

Yeah, despite how much I hate the idea of a phone without replaceable battery, if the S7 comes with SD, that will probably be enough to upgrade from my S4, which is actually still plugging along nicely. I was all set to get an S6 until it was released, but losing both battery & storage cost them a sale.

I'm really leaning towards the S7 if they have the return of the sdcard slot. I'm currently using the Note 4. But I also want to see what the Note 6 has in store as well. If they do indeed decide to put back in the sdcard and have better battery life then I"m all in. But thats almost 7 months away, not sure if I can hold off that long...lol.

Bigger battery & Quick Charge 3.0 (I assume this will be present with the SD820) should make life easier, but I much prefer having extra internal batteries to a bank, & not looking forward to either plunking down a big chunk of change to have the battery replaced or having to buy a new phone when the battery inevitably loses its ability to hold a charge. Fully powering off in case of a bad ROM flash looks like another potential issue, but it looks like almost all manufacturers are going that way in exchange for having a pretty exterior, which I don't give a CRAP about.

I will wait to see what note 6 brings. I still keep my note 4. I can't justify "upgrade" to phone without sd card, non removable battery, lack of infrared port and hdmi out. All those features I regularly use

So true. Who cares how the phone looks. It is nice to have a slim, aesthetically appealing phone, but I would take an extra mm or 2 thickness for an extra 300-500ma on the battery any day, and having a remove-able battery is important when your phone crashes and you need to completely shut the thing off. Function trumps form, though form can be cool, just know that a case is going to minimize the cool day 1.
On my S5, when it occasionally crashes, holding down the power button for 7 seconds does nothing for me. I have to remove the battery to shut the dang thing completely off. I am curious if this is also true on the S6, and if so, what they heck users do when their phone crashes? Wait out the battery drain?
Return of SD Card is crucial. My company pays for the minimum phone, and don't allow us to chip in for upgrades, which means if I want to use a company phone (free phone), I am stuck using the lowest storage option. 32gb ain't going to cut it. Removable battery would be nice, but not a deal breaker. Return of Waterproof would be killer as well, again, not a deal breaker. When I search leaked features on the web, it seems as though return of sd card is a done deal, though I cannot find an original source. Anyone know if this is true? Fingers crossed...

I've seen many rumors about SD, but there's a good chance we won't know until the official announcement. I can grudgingly accept the battery situation, but unless they offer a 256GB variant, lacking SD will be a deal killer for me.

if the rumors of a 4500mah battery on the Edge and a Snapdragon 820, version, I'll possibly go back to Samsung. (dumb question: about the kernel sources, who would be the one to release it? Samsung or Qualcomm?)

More excited about waterproofing coming back, micro sd is icing on the cake. Reason I didn't give up my S5, one its rooted and running custom rom and runs smooth and slick, but loved the water resistance, even taken vids and pics underwater and they actually come out real nice lol.

There is not even a remote chance of that happening.
It's almost certain according to leaks that Edge will have 3600mAh, regular S7 will have 3000mAh.

Any way to estimate if the Edge with the larger battery (and larger screen) will have significantly better battery life than the S7 with its 3000mAh and smaller screen?
If the Edge was say 20% longer, I'd consider trying it out. Don't love phablets, but do love battery life.

I think SD card expansion option really needs to be considered. Modular design is way to go.

Batterylife on Edge will be better in standby, simply because of larger batteries. But in benchmark tests which only checks on-screen time, they will be neck-in-neck.
Batterylife (if everything else remains equal) is dependent surface area of display.
Area ratio = (5.5/5.1)^2 = 1.16
Battery ratio = 3600/3000 = 1.20
Edge version will give you better standby, in actual usage, on-screen batterylife will be almost same.

All variants of the device are said to come housed in a black frame, with a choice of black, white, silver or gold finishings, and the disagreeable camera bump is apparently now gone from the rear of the device.
On the subject of the camera, the sources both confirmed that Samsung has dropped the megapixel count from 16 to 12, and the f-stop is now a very appealing 1.7. Samsung plans to market the camera as being extremely adept at taking night shots, thanks to the lower aperture number, increased sensor size and dual-photodiode technology, which you can read more about in the camera section at the bottom of the page.
The pair of sources also confirmed that the S7 will be dust and waterproof, will house a hybrid dual SIM slot, returning support for microSD cards, up to 200 GB, and will have an increased battery capacity – all things that had previously been rumored.
The size, resolution and a number of other S7 specs were confirmed through another leak coming via. The leak comes in the form of a photo of a presentation slide, showing the S7 as part of the evolution of the S series.
On the slide, the device is given a 5.1-inch screen with 1,440p resolution, a 12 MP BRITECELL camera, 4 GB RAM and the Snapdragon 820 or Exynos 8890 processor. None of this is new or surprising, but it does begin to set long-running rumors in stone.

It's not a rumor. It's 100% true. I got to play with one for a few minutes this week. It's a slick little device, a noted evolutionary, rather than revolutionary, improvement over the S6.

What rumor of a 4500mAh battery? I have never once heard that, and there's no way in hell they'd almost double the battery size.

Its 3500 on S7 Edge version, 3000 on S7

NO SD Card on S6

Well Samsung lost me with the S6 that was unveiled Today in Spain. It will not have SD Card or Removable Battery!! Guess will get HTC One M9 or LG Now. Think Samsung has messed up Big Time with this No SD card like Apple phone Now. http://www.androidauthority.com/gs6-hands-on-first-590402/
Yes and the back is from glass that's also not good for me
They had to make it "sexy and slim" so non-removable battery is fine I guess, specially with 10 minute 40% charge thing, but why no micro-sd??? oh and no water resistant design is a huge step backwards! The camera seems to be the only advantage, but then I will rather get Sony RX100M3 camera...
there would be performance differential between the built in storage and any existing sd card, maybe that is the reason?
samsung for shot themselves in the foot here, they have opened up the market wide open by dropping three of their key features if you include water resistance, my next phone could really now be anything. Sure it looks nice and it will probably sell ok but it wont sell in the numbers the earlier models did as they now have direct competition from all high phones. The M9 is also a fail though, looks exactly the same.
Fail

S1 to S4 user, didn't bother with the S5 as it wasn't enough of an upgrade.
Love the look of the Edge, Battery fast charge (mitigated somewhat the non replaceable battery) and Camera quality looks amazing.
BUT no MicroSD is a retrograde deal breaker..Samsung are you CRAZY?
Anyone know who's releasing a new phone with MicroSD soon? as it is now time to move on.
Well they did say the Next thing was here, but to me it means ..... Next .....
Samsung's rival LG would likely release G4 with micro-sd. If not, then I might go to the dark side and get Xiaomi. I don't get the point of making new S6 a few mm slimmer and leaving camera bump, vs having a slightly higher capacity battery!
Yeah I would have preferred a flat back, thicker phone and use the extra space to give me what I really need instead of useless finger print and pay functionality.

Would you leave LG for the S6?

I was very impressed with what Samsung had to offer. The phone looks gorgeous, the camera performs absolutely incredible in low light (based on their own comparison with the 6+), and they've finally sped up TouchWiz!
Other things I was really impressed with were
1) Exynos 7420 - First 14nm FinFET processor should offer better battery life and performance - Initial Antutu scores were over 69,000!
2) Real-time HDR on both front and back cameras
3) Wireless charging that supports both standards
4) Faster DDR4 memory
5) Faster storage memory (up to 2.7x faster than the current standard)
6) Samsung Pay and the support for MST (Magnetic Secure Transmission) which will allow it to be backwards compatible with nearly all merchants and terminals
I'm sure I'm probably missing a few key points, but has the S6 made you want to switch?

Hummm... Touchwiz might be faster now, but it still is touchwiz. The price for a new S6 is just to high.
If i remove money from the equation... i would wait for the LG G4!
is there any news of the lg g4? i would like to see if it's gonna be a monster too

I've read a few days ago that LG and Apple signed a deal with Samsung for those DDR4 RAM components. I'd also bet that LG will go with the faster nand (knowing that they like to keep up with Samsung). The S6 really looks snappy, but i'm not convinced it's the touchwiz/Exynos optimizations, i'd say it's because of better I/O with both the faster nand and DDR4 RAM. What i mean to say, you can bet that the LG G4, if LG decides to use the same components, might also be that snappy.
The camera is another story. The camera app launch speed, quick shutter speed, tracking autofocus, low light performance with that f1.9 lens.. it looks promising.
On the other hand, despite that newer AMOLED displays look really good (note 4 and now the S6) , but i still prefer LCD. I don't like the idea of possible burn-in issues (something i faced with my galaxy nexus back in the day).
Also, with Samsung Knox, and Exynos SoC's, i'm not sure how much development from the xda community will it get, it will always have "debloated" versions of the stock ROM, but everything other than that will be buggy.
I'd say wait a bit, more phones with similar specs and technologies (and possibly lower price tag) will emerge (Chinese and non Chinese).
Screen is too small for my taste, but the Note 5 might be a good shout if the rumors of Touchwiz not being dog slow prove true.
The LG G4 will be anounced in the next couple of months - I'll wait to see what the spec of that phone is before deciding.
I just moved from my beloved but ridiculously buggy-slow g3 to a Note 4. I miss the back controls...but other than that, not much else. I've had so many lagging/rebooting android devices now and the Note just doesn't. It'll take a lot to make me go back to LG or HTC in the near future.
NO SD Card for me it is deal bracker
Faster memory/storage is a treath, faster CPU - i never feal lack of performance?
Smaler body is also nice (one handed operation with G3 while riding my bike is Chalenging )
Small batery - we need to see how long it'll last?
at the end i am not changing (not to S6) for now
no sd card and no removable battery either... a big no no...
No sd card slot, non removable battery, 800€ for the 64gb version. Oh hell no.
QHD with ultra powerful processor, without removable battery..? i fear the battery life would take a hit
and the lack of microSD slot...
and Exynos...
yep, too many dealbreakers. won't consider as an option unless G4 is overall a worse package.
Nope, I personally hate the idea of a screen degrading to the point it basically damages itself (burn in)
Until AMOLED technology has advanced far enough that it no longer suffers from such issues, I'll stick with IPS displays.
On top of that, I'm not sure I'm sold on any phone with 2 panes of glass. Sure if must feel awesome in hand, but just the thought of it being so delicate at such a high price..no thanks.
Short answer: No, I'll stick with my G3. I could care less if the S6 camera is better
No removable battery or SD card, WTF, major, mistake , batteries really need replacing after a year, Doh

Yep one possibility to secure future customers for the S7
I'm leaning more toward the HTC One M9. From the demos so far, the S6 still has a laggier interface. Not as bad as in the past, but still a bit more of a delay.
I quickly scanned the thread and failed to notice anyone say anything about the bootloader, WHICH WILL BE LOCKED
I have g3 too, but my microsd slot is empty and I never moved battery

And exynos processor. Soooo not many custom roms like cm12 etc.
It's amoled, so no, thanks.
I might leave the LG G3 ...... for the LG G4!
Though I might would be tempted by a note 5 (if there was such a thing) if it had an even bigger screen, because I really love phablets. But let's be honest, the price would likely be $800+ so once again the LG would likely win with whatever offering they had based on that fact. Also, the SD card slot is a huge sell point for me on anything.

Galaxy S7 is the Perfect Phone

I felt completely alienated as a Samsung fan when they announced the S6 and S6 edge last year. I thought that they had abandoned the ideals of Android to focus on appealing to current iPhone users. With the absence of the micro SD slot, removable battery, and IP67 rating, I saw it as a major downgrade from the S5. This was all to simply make the phone look better aesthetically.
I couldn't see why Samsung would willingly kill off so many of the features that sets it apart from iPhones.
What used to separate Apple and Android is beauty and simplicity vs. functionality. With the S6, Samsung turned the notoriously functional Galaxy line into Android's iPhone and made the war against Apple beauty vs. beauty.
But with the S7, Samsung has become the first phone manufacturer to successfully merge beauty and functionality. No more compromising.
The specs say it:
Powerful processor (SD 820)
Great battery (3000 mah S7 / 3600 mah S7 edge)
Micro SD compatibility
Waterproof
There has never been a phone that is this beautiful spec wise. The closest was the S5, but it seemed like that progress was completely derailed after the S6.
The only spec that we are missing here is a removable battery, which is not a huge issue with 3600 mah or even 3000 mah.
I believe that the S7 will be the first smartphone to completely satisfy many users (or at least me). Even without an unlocked BL, I think that this is the perfect Android phone.

If only they used something other than glass on the back then it would have been close to perfect.

New Design is not a requirement to be a better phone. The S6 was a good phone, samsung had no reason to radically change it. If anything they probably would have just made it worse.
That being said I'd like to add
*No removable battery.
glass back is stupid, no matter how you drop your phone you break the glass on back, front or both, if you put it in case, what's the difference if it was cheap, easy to replace plastic? Anyhow, very happy Samsung came back to it's senses and made flagship a flagship, but then after last year releases , anything is improvement. I guess they saved usb c/3 and removable batt. for next year?

Pretty sure that removal battery isn't coming back. From what I see, most users don't care much for it either. I really don't, I'd rather have all day battery endurance than a skimpy battery that I have to swap out.
Battery is sealed. In a year'ss time it will only hold the equivalent of 2500 mah depending on use, so it would be s6's level, but in 2 years time it can be as low as the equivalent of 2000 mah which is very little for 5.1 inches.
Sealed batteries are a liability to those that hold on to a phone for 2+ years. For everything else I agree, it seems an interesting phone and since Qualcomm is back we'll prolly see some development too...

You won't in a year to two, lithium batteries degrade. That's the basic use of removable batteries, they're easy to replace when they degrade. Also S5 had a 2800 mah battery. It's possible for a replaceable battery not to be skimpy.

like the design, don't mind micro USB but touchwiz and updates are issues for sure. I also think the glass back is the biggest downside... having said that this phone is very close to perfect and that's coming from a longtime nexus user.

Well I agree, it sure would be nice to have replaceable batteries, especially when it comes to reselling phones. It's just I don't see it happening. I can't ever imagine Samsung making a modular design like LG did or going with a plastic removal back again. On top of that the number of people supporting removable batteries just aren't a significant number these days.
No doubt lithium ion batteries degrade, it's one of the few reasons I upgrade my phone every year. (I know most people hold onto their phones for longer, but I'm one that loves having the latest thing.)

Here it is short, sweet, and to the point. I have had EVERY single popular android phone since the HTC g2 and this honestly seems to be the best overall phone that has ever come out. Sure you might not like touchwiz, but why? Because everyone else says they hate it? Put a theme over the top and be done with it. Also how is a glass back a bad thing? I have yet to see any s6 with a cracked back. Never thought I'd say this but I can't wait to get rid of my 6p and switch over to a s7 edge!!

S7 vs. S5 What should I get?

I am switching from Verizon to AT&T so I need to get a new phone. Since AT&T doesn't offer Motorola smartphones, I have narrowed my choices down to the S7 and S5 (or maybe the S5 active). I have looked at the specs for both and they seem pretty close. I am not a heavy phone user, mostly just Facebook, email, Pandora, and a few games here and there. Also need a decent camera. Trying to decide if the S7 is worth the extra money over the S5. What is everyone's thoughts? Thank you.
P.S. I am not looking at the S6 due to lack of a SD card slot.
I would go for the S7. I just upgraded to it and i like it better (although there is no root, but if you get a new S5 you won't be able to root anyhow) the camera is 10 times better on the S7 i think (it's like looking through a window) the S7 is reportedly capable of reading the new 200gb mini SD. Overall i like it better (again other than root)

I had an S5 for the past couple years. Decided to upgrade this week. It came down to the S7, S7 Edge, and LG G5. I love the concept behind the G5. The modular accessories are a brilliant idea. However, I don't think that's something I'm willing to jump into right away. I expect it'll take a year or so to get all the kinks worked out. So I came down to the S7 or Edge. Similar to the G5, I think the edge screen is a brilliant idea, but I still think it's gonna take some time to take full advantage of that. Plus, I'm not big on the phablet craze. So I ended up going with the smallest of the 3 phones, but still has the same CPU, RAM, etc. as the other 2. I figured it would fit better in my pocket and wouldn't be as fragile as I expect the edge to be with the curved glass. I have always rooted my phones, and the S5 was no exception. I pushed that thing to the edge and really liked the phone. I picked up my S7 today. And let me tell you, although I'm disappointed I can't root it (yet), stock right out of the box it crushes my S5 in performance. The camera is leaps and bounds better, as has been previously reported. Especially in low light situations. And the new Snapdragon is as incredible as the reviews imply. With the 4GB RAM. This thing flies as smooth as butter. But probably the biggest factor to me, is that it's waterproof without relying on that annoying flap and has the regular quick charge micro USB instead of the awkward USB 3.0 charging port before. It was always a headache plugging in my S5 in the dark, but the S7 has no such issue. I also think aesthetically it's a much better looking phone. But that's simply opinion. Though I liked the removable battery of the S5, the S7 back just looks FAR more refined. Especially in the Platinum Gold color I chose. The ONLY complaints with this phone is the lack of a removable battery and not being able to root. But it is definitely fast enough without root. But the quick charging capability compensates for not being able to remove the battery, and I expect some genius devs to figure out root in the near future. I avoided the S6 because they took away the removable battery, the microSD card, AND waterproofing. Even the Snapdragron last year sucked. The S7 is what the design change SHOULD have been. It's a nearly perfect phone

Rooting is Greek to me. lol Not even 100% sure what it means or is. I have always carried my phones on my belt so fitting in a pocket is not an issue. My current phone does not have a removable battery either, but lacks a SD slot which I HATE. Does the S7 as the normal micro charge slot? I already have a number of those chargers and don't want to get different chargers. I will be putting an Otterbox case on whatever phone I get so looks are not very important. Thank you.

yes it does. With the Quickcharge 2.0. I look forward to USB-C becoming the standard (it will even be used for laptop chargers. It will revolutionize electronics in time. But it's still young tech right now), I think Samsung was right to do the charger this way for now. Plus the new Qi quickchargers are incredibly efficient. Which is an added convenience I haen't even taken advantage of yet. Rooting, to put it simply, is giving the user access to the very base directory of the phone. You can use apps and features like ad-blocking and run custom operating systems with many features. The dev community created many features on rooted phones that we now see in the stock versions of Android years early. I don't believe Android would have advanced as far as it has so quickly without end-user devs rooting their phones. Rooting used to be very complicated compared to how simple devs have made it in recent years. But it was great. You could put custom kernels (essentially CPU settings) that would overclock it when running apps that need the power, and then underclock it when not. Features that are now included in the stock Android experience. Almost every reason I originally rooted my phones are now features baked into stock Android, so it's not as big a deal to not be able to root IMO. But I do still want the option at least. But if you have no desire to root, that's all the more reason I'd suggest the S7 for you. Running stock it is a BEAST. There's not even the slightest hint of lag anywhere using it. Though I don't know you at all, I don't believe you will be disappointed in the slightest by choosing the S7
After looking phones over a few days ago, I ended up with the S7. I have figured most of it out and still learning as I go. I do have one question though. How do I do a screen shot? It is not the same as my pervious phone. I looked in the manual, but did not find it. Thank you
just hold the home and power buttons at the same time
You can also screen shot using your hand. Go to settings, advanced features, Palm swipe to capture, and turn it on. It shows you how to capture a screen shot by swiping your hand across the screen. I prefer this method. It seems easier to me.
S7 is far better then s5.
I still have my rooted and rom'd S5, no comparison, S7 is in another league in every way.
I had a Moto X Pure (2015), which I naturally rooted and installed a custom kernel. A friend dropped the darn thing and cracked the screen and busted the touchscreen. I thought I would have been so incredibly disappointed with the S7 due to the lack of rooting and whatever Samsung calls Touchwiz these days.
The last galaxy phone I owned was the Note 3. I didn't have it for long before I ditched it for the original Moto X. Since, I've owned all three iterations of the Moto X. Leaving what was basically a stock Android experience seemed unfathomable. Nonetheless, it would have been cheaper to use an upgrade (which I had for some time thanks to me always buying my phones unlocked through motomaker).
I too looked at the G5, S7, and S7 edge. I didn't like the feel or design of the G5. Also, the 2015 Moto X was just too damn big. Thusly, the edge was out of the running. I left the store with a black S7. Holeesheet Batman, this thing is gorgeous. The jump from the 808 with 3gb of RAM (in the X Pure) to the 820 with 4gb of RAM shows tremendous performance benefits.
The leap ahead to the 14nm process behind the 820 simply cannot be physically beaten by the 808's 22nm process, even with stock Android or overclocking and all the other bits that can come with a custom kernel. Not to mention, the 820 in my S7 has 2 fewer cores than the 808 in my X.
I'm happy with this phone. It flies through everything. The animations in the play store, and other apps, are much smoother than any other phone I've owned. The camera cannot be understated. My girlfriend, who is a professional photographer, is jealous of the performance compared to that of her iPhone. It won't produce photos better than her DSLR camera, but she can't put her Canon DSLR in her pocket.
I could keep going, although I won't.

I'm not sure I'd want to get an s7 unless its the 930f international model, I'm not a fan of quad HD on phones, I'm perfectly fine with 1080. My S5 and one plus one serve me well.

Why I Cancelled my note 8 order

Having my two phones on pre-order and back ordered has given me time to reflect on dropping 2k on two phones.
But the more I thought about the more it makes sense. Anyone else in the same boat as me?
Still rocking my s7 edge on u firmware. Tbh my phone is still plenty fast with 0 bloat. Even with u firmware battery has taken a hit. Below are my reason for skipping:
1. Battery life - I understand trying to rebrand image not having a flaming brick. But to have $1000 flagship phone have less capacity than the s8+(3500) and s7 edge (3600) is inexcusable. Although they say battery is more efficient, I am sure a year from now or sooner, people will start complaining once the device has been burned in.
2.. Finger print reader location. If not in display, then I rather theyimplement into screen or power button in side.
3. Audio. For a 1k music should pristine with a quality dac and dual speakers.
4. Not compatible with 600mhz spectrum. Again for this price it should be future proof with new spectrum. Big miss imo.
5. Price.1k for a phone? Really ? I can buy a one plus or v30 with a decent tablet for that price
These are my gripes what about everyone else.

Lol what do you want a rocketship? Jesus! Future proof? Do you want the economy to drop?? Its because of ppl that hold on to old things that make economy go down... imagine if this was future proof, ppl don't upgrade already with crappy phones (looking at the note 3 and note 4 users that held on for that long)...JUST IMAGINE IF IT WAS FUTURE PROOF! Holy ishhhhh!! Samsung sales would go down... that's why i don't blame when companies makes phones go bad when new ones come out because ppl wanna hold on and stall sales.

What I said was very conservative and resonable.
I did not mention sketchy irsis scanning, non removable battery, no IR.
Asking for bigger batteries when phones from a year ago had them is not a rocketship demands . It's the equivalent to Tropicana changing from 64oz to 59oz serving while charging the same or higher price.
Not rocketship when s7edge was one of first phones that supported 700mhz radio which prolongs the life of device.
I guess I like a good value and have received that in times past from samsung devices.
Same.. I didn't order yet but was thinking do I really need it right now... Yes a miss having a note. But this phone really is close to what I paid for my laptop. I really hate this s7 but still paying it off.. Maybe I'll wait also for the note 9 to come out.

I wouldn't have bought this device if the reports on battery life had not been so good. A bigger battery would have been nice, but as it is it keeps up with the S8. I don't think TMO will have that 600 mhz deployed in Portland (boy we could use it), so I'm not worried about that. I kept my Note 7 so I was just going to get a full refund then pay the hundred dollars extra to get this. Then the offer came along and I'm making out like a bandit! Half price, hell yeah!

Well to each their own! I'm absolutely loving the phone so far but I can see how these reasons can deter people from purchasing. Also I'm coming from a note 4 so this is a pretty major upgrade for me!
Battery is a huge improvement. Even though only about 200mah bigger, it last almost twice the amount of time. The 600mhz also isn't a big deal for me since I get great service and it's not estimated to roll out withinthe next 1-2 years anyways. I don't really understand people's issue with the fingerprint scanner. I don't see how you could smudge the camera unless you're dragging your finger across the back since it's not even directly next to the lens.
Also for 30 bucks a month it made it much more attainable for me.
If I didn't get the help with T-Mobile while in between Note 7 and Note 8 then I would of purchased the LG V30 this year. This year is a good year for good high end devices. You don't need to go for Samsung devices or $900 + devices.
I am happy with the Note 8. Though next year I will be looking at what all Android device manufactures are making before making the next purchase.
Good for you man I was considering it but are we for real its a a fricking phone and its $1000 ? Can it fly or make you teleport in the end its a phone and I dont like that phones ate getting so expensive . Thank you for opening my eyes.

All understandable concerns. But in practice I haven't found any of them to be that bad.
The battery is considerably better than any phone I've had previously. And I've had quite a few. iPhones , notes, nexi, the pixel, and both the V10 and v20. The lgs had by far the worst battery life, the iPhones, would get me through most of a day even the 6s plus would be under 10% if not dead when I would plug in at the end of the day. My Pixel and S7 don't make it. They all have to be plugged in as I wind down the day. The note 8 is incredible. I brought it down below 10% once on the first charge just to let it do one full cycle. But even with 6-7hrs SOT I'm still in the 20 or 30% range at the end of my day.
I bought a 5500mah battery case just for shiggles, I won't have to charge my phone for 3 days with the case on. But really I wouldn't let the battery hold you back.
I do agree with the fingerprint reader, both the LGs and the Pixel had the finger print reader in the middle of the back, which is a lot more convenient for the way I hold my phone but I've adjusted to the off center higher up placement. But it's still awkward.
The dual speaker miss is I guess a personal concern. I almost never use the speakers on my phone, I'm either connected to a Bluetooth headset or Bluetooth speaker and those have their own DAC. Which is also I guess why the phone DAC doesn't bother me either. If you listen a lot to headphones and want premium sound you'd probably use an amp anyway.
Also this phone isn't really all that much more expensive than previous notes. The note 4 and 7 were about $850. The note 8 is not cheap but I feel it is in line with current pricing. There are definitely nice phones for less, but they all lack the Wacom digitizer and stylus. Which definitely adds to the cost of development and materials and more importantly takes up space, leaving less room inside the phone, hence the smaller battery. And let's not forget, a very very large majority of people who had the note 7, are getting their phone for 525ish. So it's not really even a $600 phone. T-Mobile did BOGO so for about 1200 after all is said and done you end up with 2 phones. That's after taxes and adding a line. So again about $600.
600mhz would have been nice, but around me, it won't be available till late 2019. I'll have a different phone by then and band 12 is still being rolled out, which is supported. So while it's a nice to have, it's not a killer for me.
I was in a similar boat, my unlocked was backordered out into October and during that time I started convincing myself I didn't need the phone, but on release day I walked into tmobile and walked out with 2 note 8s and boy am I glad I did. I'll sell the second and I've already sold the S7 I was going to trade in. I still have the pixel and an iPhone 6s to play around with for when I want to run Oreo or whatever comes next since my one gripe with Samsung is how long it takes to get updates. But this easily became my daily driver. And I haven't looked back yet.
Thanks!
Thanks man needed to hear that. Very similar experiences. Audio was trash with the s7 and purchased a dragon fly black DAC a while back. I just went ahead with BOGO and am getting an additional 100GF.

Curious as to how much you got for your s7 ? Putting mine up for sale and will sell the 2nd note 8. Thinking outof pocket cost should be around $200.
Thanks everyone .. made me a believer :good:

I sold it for 250. I still had the box, charger and headphones in original wrapping though. Not sure if that made a difference or was just a nice to have for the buyer. I have chargers coming out my ears and never use the in box headphones, so they just sit there. My S7 as also mint because it didn't get much use with all the other phones I was swapping between and always kept it in a case.

Having used the Note 8 for about a week now, here are my experiences:
1. According to reports, the Note 8's battery life is as good as or even better that the s8+. And compared to my Note 7 (3500 mAh), the Note 8 (3300 mAh) lasts WAY longer and has a longer Screen on Time. I usually had to charge the Note 7 at around 7-8 pm (20% battery), but with the Note 8 I hit 20% at around 11 pm. And compared to my last daily driver, the Note 3, the Note 8 is 10000000x better. I lose 20% every 30 minutes on the Note 3 while in use, on the Note 8 it's more like 3-4% every 30 mins.
2. I actually prefer the rear placement for some reason. This was one of my biggest worries when the phone was announced, but I'm having no problems with it so far. Ironically, I used the iris scanner as my main unlocking method for the Note 7, but I seem to be using the fingerprint scanner more on the Note 8. Maybe it's because the 8's scanner is vertical while the 7 was horizontal and you get more finger real estate with the 8. I remember having to tap the Note 7's scanner 2 or 3 times before it would register, while on the Note 8 it's been once (very rarely twice) to unlock.
3. Yeah, Samsung speakers suck. It's been that way for all the Notes and all the Galaxy S phones. Even my Nexus S had crappy speakers. So yes, I agree that the Note 8 has crappy speakers as usual.
4. Not really a concern for me. According to the T-Mobile rollout map, my area won't have the 600 spectrum until 2020, so I'll probably have the Note 10 or 11 by then. Plus, what a lot of people who complain about the 600 mHz miss is that TMo also has the 700 mHz spectrum and the Note 8 has the antenna for it. Both share the same advantages of lower-frequency radio waves. Compared to my Note 3, which barely gets 2 bars, the Note 8 is constantly 4-5 bars.
5. Yeah, agree with you on this one as well, $1K is a bit much. The only reason I got the Note 8 is because Samsung only wanted $580 for it. ($425 discount and $70 iphone 5s trade in) That's cheaper than any flagship phone coming in the next year even with Black Friday discounts.
I came from a t-mobile note 5, held off getting the note 7, coz for me new gadgets tend to have bugs, true enough it happened, but now my daughter's note 3 is having problems, then t-mobile had a note 8 zero down and $40+ a month jump on demand with just $7.50 up front for shipping, so no brainer for me, sold the note 3 to pay off note 5 and gear s2. Now between note 5 vs 8 worlds apart, 8 battery excellent for the last week I've used it, Wi-Fi on, Bluetooth on, aod on 7pm to 7am, 3 email sync every 30 minutes, facebook sync, weather screen, hd widgets ever 30mins refresh, 3-6 calls ranging from 20 mins to over an hour, I play games, brightness 55%-60, fully charged at 1230am it's 1020 pm already and I still have 32% battery. Yes i know I should have held off a little longer but 2 years no new phone, upgrade bug got me. ?
I don't use the finger print sensor just for camera shots, don't use facial recognition, I use iris scanner but mostly I use pattern with pin code as its faster for me to open it. I don't use phone speakers to listen to music coz I know most mobile phones speakers are crappy especially if you have a good home theater set up, I always use a good set of headphones, I guess just have fun with the new toy. Try to bargain or wait for one with your carriers if they have a good promo.

Its one thing to blindly buy a 1k phone, because you are a fan of a company's products, but its another thing to actually assess the product's value in relation to the price. I did not buy the note 8. I received it free through the tmobile deal buy one get one free. Tbh, if it were me gauging the price of this phone to be $700-800 for all its combined features. I sure as hell would have not coughed up 1k for this thing. Hell you could very well buy yourself an s8+ for cheaper with a note stylus and save a ton more money. People like to jump up and down claiming the s-pen is worth the $200-300 mark up compared to the s8+, but when it comes down to it majority do not even use the damn thing (surely not worth that markup price either).
In addition, scrutinizing the company for the price in relation to the actual product is a good thing. Consider what apple is doing for their new iphone, it has taken away essential phone feature (headphone jack) forcing people to buy the accessories to use headphones, finally implementing fast charge that require additional accessory purchases and marking up the phone for 1k. This is because they are aware that their fan-base that blindly buy their new products is so large that they can sell the same with implementing less. The last thing we want are android companies doing the same unsavory business models. All in all, I highly respect OP's opinion and choice.

I agree mostly, I don't think I could really get myself to pay so much for this phone of I had to pay full price. It's getting ridiculous! The Note 7 prior owner discount was a big plus because I was going to use the full refund from my Note 7 and just pay the extra 100 dollars out of pocket. Now I'm keeping the entire refund and paying half with a qualifying device turned in, an option I like better since ideally I'd like this phone to be priced close to 600 dollars. Then there is always the fact that to date the Note series is still in a class of its own. Yes, I do use the pen.
1. The battery life hasn't been of an issue to me. This is coming from a person who (very briefly) owned an S8+ with a larger battery, as well as a Pixel XL (still own it) with a slightly larger battery. I have no clue what magic research sauce Samsung employed behind the scenes in the Note 8 battery design, but it works, and it works well, in spite of the bigger and bright as hell screen. I haven't had any battery complaints at all in terms of average usage (streaming, web surfing, email management, social media updates, etc). I am easily getting 4-5 (and sometimes with conservative use 5.5-6) hours of screen on time. The device doesn't even really warm up, either, except under the utmost heaviest of loads.
2. The fingerprint sensor, while still inopportunely placed, is an improvement over the sensor on the S8+. The sensor is inlaid some and distanced a bit more from the camera/flash modules. I don't use it as my main biometric, but it is there when I do use it and accurate enough.
3. Samsung has always had lousy external speakers...but then again I live a lifestyle that isn't necessarily conducive to carrying around my smartphone on my shoulder like a boombox, either, so yeah. It is a bit w/e.
FYI y'all, if you did a JOD you can return your phone if in good condition to any T-Mo store at anytime to cancel the lease

I get good battery life too as long as I use the phone. My standby battery usage is wack though.
