Preferred Network Type -- Global vs. LTE vs. Others - X Style (Pure) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I flashed SlimROM and noticed a little "R" on my network signal on the status bar.
Forgot about it and then today noticed it again.
So I checked my phone settings and roaming is disabled. But my SIM status say "roaming".
Did a SpeedTest and got 15mbps download.
Then I changed to LTE and the roaming is gone, but my downloads are only 3Mbps now.
Switching back and forth, "Global" is consistently much faster.
But then it says it's "roaming".
Kinda wondering if Verizon will tag me with some roaming fees even though my phone is set to not do any roaming?

I've set my phone to LTE to see what it does, and when it's changed I can't make phone calls nor receive them. I keep my phone on global and don't have a problem. Me being a truck driver I set my roaming status to roam on all trips, never got any roaming charges. I'm on Verizon as well.

Verizon "doesn't" roam unless you leave the country. Also if you use an app to check the status of the cell signal it will report it not roaming. It seems to be an issue with ROMs and CDMA reporting network correctly.

Turning of Roaming completely

Not sure if this is the correct forum but I want to be able to turn of roaming completely. I have a US G1 on the three UK network with the US RC33 installed and root. I have disabled data roaming. Here in the UK we're too small a country to want to roam! Coverage is usually good enough from a single network. However, I occasionally get the little 'R' symbol on the single strength icon and an annoying prompt saying I need to turn data roaming on because I lost connectivity. I have to go into the settings and manually select the "3" network again.
What I want is to either be connected to three UK or not connected to anything at all. Is there a config file I can edit to allow this? Would the UK RC8 firmware do this for me?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Doesn't a 3-UK SIM try to roam onto O2 though?
You could set the phone WCDMA only and NOT roam onto a GSM network.
Use AnyCut to shorcut Activity: Phone Info
From there under preferred Network Type; set to "WCDMA Only"
HELP!! Roaming signal won't go away
I have an unlocked G1, JF1.41 v 1.1 and i just updated to the RC33...but this also happened when i had RC30 , v 1.0...
I put in my canadian Fido sim card and everything works fine but i have that little "R" on top of my signal strength bar...
I think this means its data roaming? if this is the case...it should be okay (even though its going to bother me) because my service provider says my EDGE/Data is disabled (i do not have a data plan, NOR do i wish to incur any data charges.. i'm fine with my free WIFI ) .
However, if this means im roaming on another network, i dont want to be incuring any long distance charges on my phone EVEN when im using my own FIDO network..
I went to settings - about phone - status, and here are my specs (some of them):
Network: Fido
Network Type: EDGE
Service state: In service
Roaming: Roaming
Data Access: Disconnected
i'm pretty much just concerned about the ROAMING part of it... my other friends with G1's are with rogers, don't have that little R..
how do i get rid of that?? please and thanks!
Try manually changing the network in Settings>Wireless controls>Mobile networks>Operator selection
G1, like all GSM phones, will roam onto networks specified on the SIM if it can get a better signal. As long as the relevant operator has a roaming agreement in place, there's nothing to be concerned about, other than the R symbol in the status bar.
Mod: move this over to General discussion please.
I did change it and selected my Fido network (it's the only network available).
Thanks. I've set it to WCDMA only so I'll see how it goes.
Please help??? i still have that little R on top!
After I got home I found my phone had lost its connection. It didn't seem to be searching for the network. I had to go into settings, search for networks and then select three again. Is there any way to control if the phone does a search for networks automatically?
Looks like it reconnects to three on its own after a while. I still get the annoying popup about turning on data roaming though

As has been previously mentioned, Three will "roam" onto another network if it goes out of Three's own 3G network coverage because Three does not run its own 2G network.
However, it isn't O2 anymore, it is Orange as of late 2006/2007. I *believe* that you won't be charged any more if you use data whilst "roaming" on Orange, so whilst you are in the UK it is quite safe to allow data roaming, but I would be inclined to check this with Three.

Dave

Forcing G1 to Roam

I'm going camping this coming weekend to a place in the mountains that tmobile has very poor coverage in. I was there last month and discovered my friends at&t phone had full service while my g1 showed service, just didn't show any bars and other times only showed one bar. Calls with my phone were flacky and dropped out, his worked perfectly. Is there a way to make my phone switch to roaming on at&t?
I have a national plan on T-Mobile.
I'm running Cyanogen 3.9.5
Thanks!

Should do it automatically. I saw my phone do this the other weekend when I was travelin. My phone showed ATT, Corr Wireless, and some other service and certain points.
The tmobile signal is just strong enough to keep it from roaming there. I was hoping it would switch automatically but it never did. I know the phone does have roaming ability, i've seen it switch to roam and work fine.
I would assume then just change your APN settings.
you can try manual operator selection, by going Settings > Wireless Controls > Mobile Network Settings > Network Operators > Search Networks then select whatever network you want to use
Hi.. I'm using CyanogenMod 3.6.8.1 on my HTC Dream and I've got the same issues with roaming. I've travelled to 3 countries last month and I had issues with connecting to GSM network.. There was error message that my sim card cannot work with specific networks.. I've tried to use auto connection and I've tried also to connect manually to specific networks, but with the same result. I've tried also rebooting and removing the battery... Problem disappeared after few hours... I had this issue in Austria, Hungary and Turkey so it's not operator/country specific. Problems doesn't exist on different cell phone (Nokia). Everything works fine after powering on the phone.

Network dies when I turn off 2g

Anyone have this problem? It happens ever time

Hmm.... seems like your phone might be in WCDMA mode only... It should be in WCDMA-Preferred since you plan on using 3G and 2G
Go to your phone dialer and dial *#*#4636#*#*
and Diagnostics Menu should come up..... Go to PHONE INFORMATION.... Scroll down and Set Network Type to: WCDMA Preferred
see if that helps...
Thanks for the reply i am on tmobile and it is defaulted to GSM. Will changing it be any different than GSM?
my phone does that as well right now at home even though i have it on WCDMA preferred, t-mo has been having issues with their 4G towers and their DNS servers lately that has been affecting many people with newer phones/SIM cards and in 4G areas, t-mo has not released an ETA on a fix but i have been dealing with it for a month now at my home and i am about ready to switch carriers

Nope, it'll still be the same. WCDMA-Preferred means that then phone will Prioritize 3G/4G signal over an EDGE signal. So If you are in a decent 4G/3G coverage the phone will set itself into 3G/4G mode... and when you move into an area where you have a weaker 3G/4G signal...t han the phone will be in EDGE mode.
Keep in mind that if you're referring about using WCDMA Preferred in a 3G/4G coverage area - but only 2G works - then you have a network issue. This isn't so much a device issue as it is a MSISDN issue on the network or a potential tower issue.
If you get no signal on 3G/4G and signal is there on 2G - check your coverage first - then if coverage shows you should have 3G/4G, call TMO and let them know, they'll need to do a service request or trouble ticket based on the location and breadth of the issue you're having.

Question about Android/T-Mo/Orange Data Roaming

So I just registered for the T-Mobile UK/Orange network sharing, and I'm all registered
I've enabled data roaming, however under "Network Operators" I have an option for "T-Mobile" and one for "T-Mobile Orange"
Which one should I choose?
Got a feeling i posted in the wrong section but anyway yeah, whats everyone else on TMo doing?
Just leaving it on automatically detect?

Leave it on auto.
It'll default to T-Mobile and only use T-Mobile/Orange when you have no signal on T-Mobile itself.
When roaming onto T-Mobile/Orange, you'll only get Edge speeds maximum as opposed to the speeds you can get on T-Mobile's 3G network.
Some time later this year, they're supposed to be merging the 3G networks together as well but until then, it's 2/2.5G only.
Teampokerface
Keep it on auto.
good info, cheers
At first I thought this would be useful, but I find its more annoying than anything. Mine hogs orange, which is pain. Everytime I load up the internet its connected to orange, I do a network scan t-mobile appears and I have a full HSPDA signal and yet it favours oranges Edge or G with unuseable data speeds. every friggin time!!!!!!!
It should only switch to the T-Mobile/Orange network when you don't have coverage on T-Mobile's own network.
It might be an issue with how your handset is set up that it's defaulting to T-Mobile/Orange.
If need be, you can actually opt out of the signal share by texting STOP to 2121.
o right, ok thanks I may consider doing that then as there isnt many places I dip out of signal for long on t-mobile anyway. Having to constantly go through settings to change it back to t-mobile is very annoying.

Unlocked RP2 on AT&T - Network settings

Hi all,
Last month I picked up an RP2 on Swappa for an unbeatable deal. I tried Sprint/Boost & T-Mobile/Metro, but the coverage & speeds were horrible in my area (Central Florida). I brought it over to AT&T and signed up for their prepaid plan. However, although I could make & receive phone calls & text messages, I couldn't get any data, even after making sure the APN & mobile data settings were correct. I dialed *#*#4636#*#* and saw that the default preferred network type was incorrect. I set it to LTE/TD-SCDMA/UMTS, cycled airplane mode, and got LTE immediately. It's worked perfectly for the last month in many Florida cities, and I've had both great coverage & fast download speeds. Attached is a screenshot in case anyone with the unlocked variant has issues with data on AT&T.
Update:
After updating to the September security patch, it was a touch more difficult to get LTE on AT&T than before. I had to switch between LTE/TD-SCDMA/WCDMA & LTE/TD-SCDMA/UMTS a couple of times before LTE was provisioned. Otherwise, working great, with faster speeds in my area than other providers.
