Changing the resolution of Default to 2K without root - Xperia Z5 Premium General

I tried the adb Shell to change the Size of default Screen size from 1080 to 2k. This i did with Mac. My phone is not rooted.
Open terminal
adb shell
Then type
wm size 1440x2560
and to go back to default use
wm size 1080x1920
It works with reboot as well.
If we change the density from 480 - 640 using WM density 640. Icons looks very small. I think by default Sony doesn't supply icons for that density. Not sure if someone already said this. You can issue the same using mobile terminal emulator as well. You can download that app from Play Store.
I am not able to take screenshot as i get "Couldn't capture screenshot. Content may be protected or the memory may be full."
Try and let me know. If it is already mentioned here. Apology. Please close this

With Nova Launcher. With the below settings. The Phone looks awesome.
wm size 2160x3840
wm density 800
The Phone looks awesome. But with default launcher icons are so small.

sweeet i am watching this thread. thx alot

This doesn't work with the mobile terminal with unrooted Phone. Just an update. You can use both Mac and Windows CMD for doing this.

what is the default pixel density of xperia z5 premium??

480

Thanks, I managed to figure it out and I can confirm that it works! This is just so awesome! It's just too bad that the screenshot function doesn't work on any resolution above 1080P.
I got also one more question. When you change the resolution using ADB, does the phone actually start to output content in that resolution or is it just an illusion?

2k resolution on YouTube becomes available, so I guess it works
Edit: One more thing, if everything has this weird scaling a reboot usually fixes this.
Happy new year!

I confirmed the change with some screen resolution apps and in YouTube and it both confirms it as 2k. I hope Sony makes this as permanent and with an option for real 4k as well.

"wm size" only emulates resolution, so real resolution is still FHD and 4K upscaling won't work when you are not watching image/video.
Real resolution is controlled by kernel:

I'm actually new to using adb. Does anyone mind doing a step by step guide on how to do this? I would greatly appreciate your help and time.

Any screen shots and evidence, like the youtube app.

is it possible to change the dpi of navigation bar thru adb shell?

240 DPI mod

So I'm the type of person who loves to get more out of my screen. So I went looking for a way to turn the screen into 240 DPI.
I came across Textdroider DPI (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.texdroider.texdroider_dpi)
This app allows you to change the DPI settings on most AOSP ROMs (this also includes the stock ROM for this tablet)
***It does require root access***
I tested it and can confirm it works great on this tablet.
If anyone has any questions don't hesitate to ask.

You can also use a build.prop editor such as the one in rom toolbox. All it is doing is editing the dpi value in the build.prop. This does make things a little more simple, so if you aren't looking to do much else this would work for you.
What dpi sends the device into full tablet mode? (the UI on 10 inch android tablets) if that is even possible.

It makes your screen bigger. It basically truck Android into thinking that you have a 9-10 inch tablet. Which brings out a bunch of different (in my opinion better) features on the tablet. It also give the illusion of having a bigger screen because everything is smaller so you have more space.

A larger screen with the same number of pixels actually has a lower PPI. Hence lowering our DPI makes Android (as ShrekOpher says) think we have more room and can see smaller things more clearly.
I remember the first time I done this I also found it confusing hehe.
Sorry about digging out the dead
1) the Console Mode does not work correctly when DPI != 320, you can change the DPI on-the-fly (see 2) )
2) you can use SecondScreen ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.farmerbb.secondscreen.free ) to change the DPI for you
3) you can use Terminal Emulator to do the same magic as SecondScreen:
Code:
wm
usage: wm [subcommand] [options]
wm size [reset|WxH]
wm density [reset|DENSITY]
wm overscan [reset|LEFT,TOP,RIGHT,BOTTOM]
wm size: return or override display size.
wm density: override display density.
wm overscan: set overscan area for display.
So, just play with
Code:
wm density 240
, etc.

Saw that you have a dailer and a contacts menu. Is that google hangout? Or do you have a normal landline dailer and such and make normal calls? ( I assume you are an American)
(sorry offtopic - i am asking because I am really interested in buying a Shield tablet but I really want it to have call and text capabilities. From what I have searched it is very limited)
Is there a non-root way to change the DPI settings?
Non-root way to change DPI
I found a non-root and fairly safe way to do it, however try at your own risk:
1. Install JDK
2. Install Android SDK platform tools
3. Install USB drivers for shield tablet
4. Put tablet into developer mode and enable USB debugging, possibly needs to switch between PTP usb mode and MTP mode if device doesn't appear when running "adb devices" command.
5. Turn off screen
6. run the following command: adb shell wm density 240
This should remain in 240 DPI even after a reboot
To reset:
1. Turn off screen
2. run up ADB and run the following command: adb shell wm density reset
I don't know if this will affect Nvidia Grid / Gamesteaming / Console mode!
I wrote almost the same
A DPI of 266, is when tablet mode first kicks in.

HOWTO: Reduce screen resolution, preserve battery life enhance framrate

I thought it would be good to have this in one seperate thread. The PRIV has a great qHD display but I don't think qHD resolutions make any sense on mobile devices. Problems like framedrops, low framerates, heat and battery draining can be the result.
Luckily, although the PRIV is unrootable, the commands wm density and wm size still work when applied through adb shell with USB debugging turned on. (If you don't know how to do this, there are many tutorials out there).
The PRIV has a native resolution of 2560x1440 @ 560ppi. We will change this to 1920x1080 @ 420ppi. To do so enter the following two lines:
Code:
adb shell wm size 1080y1920
adb shell wm density 420
Then reboot your device manually or simply enter:
Code:
adb reboot
To reset everything to normal enter:
Code:
adb shell wm size reset
adb shell wm density reset
Then reboot.
Hope this is helpful to you. Now I really like my PRIV and get stellar battery life and SoT:
WORKING ! thank You for that
After applying and rebooting, only a third of the screen was filled by the UI in the center and was very small. The rest was blank, not even navigation displayed.
Tried on the Priv bought from Blackberry direct on the latest update.

adb shell wm size 1920x1080
adb shell wm density 420

Setting a higher density enlarges the fonts for better readability (which might be important for people in their 40ies ). I experienced setting values 450 or 480 is still OK. Higher values hide some things from the productivity bar.
Unfortunately, picture password is not working any more.
It seems that the display needs about 150 mAh per hour with the reduced resolution. Can someone check the initial energy consumtion to quantify the gain (if any).
Thanks
Here is a screenshot of the current energy consumption.
I will try out the commands later.
For comparison:
Time on: 2h 4m 25s
Computed power use: 436 mAh
With default resolution.
Anyone know how to correct the corrupt BBM icon in the HUB after the resolution/DPI change? The BBM icon turns huge on any density change and it looks incredibly ugly.
After having the reduced resolution active for one week, I'm switching back to default. It seems that for daily use there isn't much difference. I observed a couple of scaling issues (mainly with BB apps but also others) and decided it's not worth. I guess it will make one for sure when playing 3d games, but that's not my device usage.

The reason why BlackBerry apps get affected is because they don't follow proper Material design guidelines. Sadly I feel that this is something that will plague devices for a while to come. So far I too am not noticing much difference in performance or battery life.
is there a way to pin the image on the bottom right of the screen?
also, does it completely ignore touches outside of the image? ...or am I reading wrong and the image will be stretched over the entire screen?

The screen uses only almost half of the energy when it's in FullHD mode. That's a HUGE difference I can live with those little scaling issues here and there.
priv resolution, dpi
i change just the resolution, does it have a point, i do not wana change the dpi for the fact that is going to overscale a lot of thing, and for exemple i can not change my whatsapp photo if i change the dpi....

Interesting thread. I just bought a new phone because the priv battery is dying, and I couldn't find a new one. But I had to drop screen resolution to do that, since I didn't want a physically larger device. I miss the sharp resolution and greater "real estate" of the priv screen.

(Root) Always 4K Screen Resolution

When it comes to screen Sony definitely tops the list above other manufacturers but our Xperia Z5 Premium doesn't always use 4K HD Resolution Screen, only when watching 4k video or things right? so why not to make it work in always 4K mode? more pixels- more fun
Warning: Note that on high brightness battery usage will be much more than 1080p screen mode
it requires Rooted device also
1.Download Terminal Emulator from play store
2. open app and write "su" without quotes
3. give it root access and write " wm size 2160×3840 " also without quotes
Screen will became "ugly", to fix it now type "wm density 820" also without quotes. after that all should work fine, play any video and you'll notice color changes and much More improvements, however there's always a way back to 1080p
to do it
wm size 1080×1920
wm density 420

Just thank you! It gave it a different and nice appearance but I noted two things. First the phone works a little slower and the other thing is when I tried to make a call the caller interface didn’t open so I was not able to make the normal functions like turning off the microphone, hanging up the call, etc. Unfortunately I had to put it back to 1080p.

Hi Guys! I know you have lurking about that unutilized 4k screen of our phone, Why not enjoy "1440x2560" density of 534 works perfectly fine the only down side are glitchy looking start-up since it was designed to in 1080p and multi tasking has no thumbnails on it about it looks and feels good!
Just do
adb shell wm size 1440x2560
adb shell wm density 534 <-----------IMO this is the density, fonts looks smaller but legible.
ENJOY!
"You can do the same also on your Z1, Z2, Z3, Z4 Tablet, Z5, Z5 Compact ..... and on your crapold device, because this is not changing the display resolution
Seriously guys..... this is changing the resolution of the VIRTUAL display (not the physical one), so like this you are getting 4k emulation on 1080p physical resolution.
To change the physical display resolution you need to do "quite a few more steps", which cannot be done in a simple way like this (and surely not without root).
Moreover, even if -- yes, there is a way -- it's not doable on stock ROMs, as it misses the required implementation.
I am almost done here so, on Open Devices, you will be able to get real [email protected] whenever you want."

How to adjust resolution in game (text too small)

I have a "almost" brand new LG G6, and I really like it (i came from a LG G3 and LG V20). But want i have difficulty is the "screen" resolution. I've download the game Burrito Bison (a really fun game), but the text is really too small. Few games in my library have this problem, and it's almost unplayable.
How can I change the screen resolution to be able to play with a decent text size? I have the new Oero update with the Canadian LG-H853 phone.
Thanks to help me....
Enable usb debugging from develpoer settings and then try is command via ADB
"adb shell wm size 1080x2160"
Will change resolution to 1080p
If you need the original resolution just run this
"adb shell wm size 1440x2880"

4K option or forced 1080p?

Was wondering if this display shows native 4K all the time or has user selectable option for it?
Was super pissed with my XZ Premium being forced to render at 1080p in all but a few apps.
4K is only useful on this size screen for VR, so won't make the same mistake again.

Thanks for the reply. You answered my question.
Actually, the adb method was only emulated 4K, not native. Still selected the resources from xxhdpi folders and blew them up. Doesn't even select the xxxhdpi higher resolution images for 2K. For the best I guess. then it would scale it down to 1080p before enlarging to 4K adding extra blur.

What command in adb can force this screen resolution?
For the XZ Premium apparently the following would have worked:
In an ADB shell:
wm size 2160×3840
wm density 820
In my case the wb size command gives me:
Error: bad size 2160×3840
Probably we need another resolution
After change it to 4K, the screenshot have an issue ( not capturing the whole screen as 4k but the screen at a corner with other space in black. How do you guys solve this issue?
wm size 2160×3840
wm density 820
In my case the wb size command gives me:
Error: bad size 2160×3840
Try....2160x3840
Not ....2160*3840
I just placed my xz2p into native 4k mode with the dpi set at 640/xxxhdpi. I really like the increase in real estate and the integer scaling makes everything look crisp.
That said, I've currently got two hiccups (not already mentioned, I also have the screenshoting issue hereto described) related to dpi change:
(1) The monochrome viewfinder is behaving strangely, but still serviceable (wrong aspect ratio & tap to focus doesn't move the focus indicator)
(2) The rotation animation is really broken and is either firing twice or has some other timing related issue.
#1 I can live with, but #2 is a real drag. I've turned the transition animations off in the dev setting, but it still looks really weird when i rotate.
Any ideas? It seems like sony has made some additional changes to deal with the 4k/1080p pop in and out. Simply setting the WM mode doesn't appear to manipulate those hidden settings. Perhaps one of the on phone apps needs to be disabled?
Edit: https://forum.xda-developers.com/xz...20hz-quest-t3852052/post78603665#post78603665
...according to the xzp forums, its not actually 4k? how can one verify this?
Edit2: Saying things that will have me eating crow in no time!
I'm at least somewhat convinced the xzp peps are wrong. I have been swapping the phone from [email protected] dpi to [email protected] dpi. If they are correct either both would look exactly the same or the 4k version would look worse (because of the double scaling). It clearly looks better. A good test to try; make the icons and text as large as you can in nova launcher and switch between the two. If you look at the top and bottom of the dark ring inside the camera icon you'll see clear aliasing at 1080p and smooth curves at 4k. Just a reminder anything that is not a perfect multiple of 160 will always cause scaling on android. same with dpi values over 640.
I've got a pretty decent canon camera(xc10) with 10x optical zoom, once I find the charger for it I'm going to try to get some clean photos of the screen in the two mode and post 100% crops here.
