[BOUNTY] DPI Spoofing tool for individual Tablet & Phone Apps

I created a bounty thread for this tool in the i717 Galaxy Note General forums but wanted to make it know to the n7000 users too as it should work on all Galaxy Note models (And hopefully many other phones).
The Goal: A tool to spoof DPI at a per-app level to enable use of both Tablet and Phone apps without changing the default system DPI​

Why would you want to use an app not designed for a certain dpi to work in a crippled way ??
It would be much wiser to find a way to change the dpi 'on the fly' as you can do in windows for example. Maybe Google will make it possible one day, as we can already run apps in 'window mode' in ICS

You're looking at it the wrong way around.
Telling apps like Gmail, YouTube and tablet specific Apps you have a Tablet DPI enables UI layouts specifically designed for tablet viewing, they are not crippled, they are enhanced.
The Note's display resolution makes it a perfectly capable mini tablet that can run UI layouts designed for tablets. Samsung insist the Note is a phone and have gimped the system by removing tablet support despite the device having a 1280x800 screen.
Some may prefer using tablet mode, others may say it's too small, this tool is for the former rather than the latter.
I have attached pics of the awesome tablet views of Gmail, Youtube and BeyondPod running on my Note.

In Android DPI is an arbritrary measurement, dont get it mixed up with PPI, all you have to do is tell the App you are at 200 DPI and it will display that way

If that were true, then there would be no need to reboot when changing dpi, it could be done on application level which is, as far as i know, not possible.
However I could be mistaking, i will catch up on it....
As I see it now you would just only get your Gmail in tablet UI, displaying only half of it's content because the rest will fall beside the screen.

Don't get me wrong, i think it is a great idea as well.
But i doubt it is actually possible in the current android architecture

I don't care about UI differences. I want the stupid apps to install from the market.
So, far, they all look the same even when they're "incompatible". Typical lame crap.

It is done in the Asus Padfone, so it can't be impossible.

And how do you cope when the apps try scaling to the different LCD Density and half of the display is off the side of the screen, or things are bunched up in the corner of the display?

Wow, this is extremely needed thing! I realy like Tablet Mode on my Note, but can't use it because of many FCs. Sometimes I prefer Tablet Mode (Opera Mobile, Apex Launcher, File managers, Aquamail, Youtube official app and others), and sometimes standart "Phone" mode (Phone apps, S Memo, some small script apps, some games and others). Don't listen to those fools who say that this program is not needed.

This is exactly what I'm longing to see but I don't think it's possible for now as it's rather an OS related issue then just a software issue. I belive Asus padfone works only in low tablet dpi too. Apps only open in tablet mode . You can't change resolution on the fly

Totaly agree. I'd love to use those apps in tablet mode with spoofed DPI:
- Poeple
- Calendar
- Mail
- Music
- Calculator
- Settings
But the rest ? I really prefer phone UI for messaging, lockscreen, homescreen and the keyboard cause tablet keyboard is a nightmare to use.
There are some mods to force Settings.apk to work in tablet mode while in phone ui - but that's just wrong cause everything is ugly-huge and not readable. Would be great to force those apps to work AND display like in 180-200dpi while the phone ( and the rest ) works in 320dpi.
But is that even possible ?

when I connect my laptop to my TV through HDMI for the 1st time it automatically connects to a certain resolution. and that's fine because then I can select a different resolution if I don't like it. for example if my laptop connects automatically to [email protected] which is my TV maximum resolution then I can change it to... let's say [email protected] which is lower quality but is waaaay smoother 60 Hz is smoother than 24Hz.
ok, my question is... how can I change the output resolution of Note3's. I haven't seen a menu yet allowing you to do that. I'd rather have [email protected] or even [email protected] instead of [email protected] which is so laggy. and don't tell me the Note3 can't connect to a different resolution than 1080p because it obviously can. I've connected it to another tv and on that one it connects at [email protected] and also I can't change the resolution to that one.
is there a workaround that you can do to allow selecting other resolution than the default one?

and it's funny because both Note 1 and 2 connect on my TV automatically at [email protected] and as a consequence they show no lagginess while my Note3 which was supposed to be an upgrade is in this case a downgrade...

!!WARNING!! Not my fault if you need to reflash. You're doing this on your OWN ACCORD!
Use a third-party launcher as TouchWizHome likes to crash. Open terminal if it's rooted (will only be able to change resolution with root) and use these commands:
NOTE: Do not use quotation marks when typing in terminal.
Resolution: Type "su", grant root, type "wm size 1080x1920" if you want 1080p, or 720x1280 if you want 720p
4.3 and 4.4 use "wm". Earlier versions of android use "am". Tablets are reversed and should need "1920x1080" as opposed to phones which needs "1080x1920".
PROTIP!!! This may mess with your Note 3 and you might have to reflash. Samsungs framework is NOT dynamic like Googles framework is. This might result in corrupted apps. If you want to change DPI without an app (AppSettings with Xposed works fine and lets you do it to individual apps) just change "size" for "density" and "1080x1920" for "480". 480 is default, so lower it to see how small you want things to be. 360 is the sweet spot for me.

ok... any other idea? I don't want to change the resolution of the launcher but the resolution of the output. I presume that method might change both and also requires root. I don't want to root it. any other suggestions?

Changing the resolution of Default to 2K without root

I tried the adb Shell to change the Size of default Screen size from 1080 to 2k. This i did with Mac. My phone is not rooted.
Open terminal
adb shell
Then type
wm size 1440x2560
and to go back to default use
wm size 1080x1920
It works with reboot as well.
If we change the density from 480 - 640 using WM density 640. Icons looks very small. I think by default Sony doesn't supply icons for that density. Not sure if someone already said this. You can issue the same using mobile terminal emulator as well. You can download that app from Play Store.
I am not able to take screenshot as i get "Couldn't capture screenshot. Content may be protected or the memory may be full."

This doesn't work with the mobile terminal with unrooted Phone. Just an update. You can use both Mac and Windows CMD for doing this.

My apologies for being a complete noob but could you give me an exact procedure for how to do this on Windows? I desperate need to change the awful DPI on this otherwise perfect phone.

Thanks, I managed to figure it out and I can confirm that it works! This is just so awesome! It's just too bad that the screenshot function doesn't work on any resolution above 1080P.
I got also one more question. When you change the resolution using ADB, does the phone actually start to output content in that resolution or is it just an illusion?

2k resolution on YouTube becomes available, so I guess it works
Edit: One more thing, if everything has this weird scaling a reboot usually fixes this.

I confirmed the change with some screen resolution apps and in YouTube and it both confirms it as 2k. I hope Sony makes this as permanent and with an option for real 4k as well.

"wm size" only emulates resolution, so real resolution is still FHD and 4K upscaling won't work when you are not watching image/video.
Real resolution is controlled by kernel:

Yes agreed. But I prefer having my resolution on the visual screen to be better than 1080p.

I'm actually new to using adb. Does anyone mind doing a step by step guide on how to do this? I would greatly appreciate your help and time.

HOWTO: Reduce screen resolution, preserve battery life enhance framrate

I thought it would be good to have this in one seperate thread. The PRIV has a great qHD display but I don't think qHD resolutions make any sense on mobile devices. Problems like framedrops, low framerates, heat and battery draining can be the result.
Luckily, although the PRIV is unrootable, the commands wm density and wm size still work when applied through adb shell with USB debugging turned on. (If you don't know how to do this, there are many tutorials out there).
The PRIV has a native resolution of 2560x1440 @ 560ppi. We will change this to 1920x1080 @ 420ppi. To do so enter the following two lines:

adb shell wm density 420
Then reboot your device manually or simply enter:

adb reboot
To reset everything to normal enter:

adb shell wm size reset
adb shell wm density reset
Then reboot.

Worked for me.
did execute these commands in this order on my computer with adb:
adb shell wm size 1920x1080
adb shell wm density 420
adb reboot
Done.

its wrong because to put it correct should be
adb shell wm size 1080x1920 ( not 1920x1080 )

Been at 1080p for the past couple of months and haven't had any issues

Setting a higher density enlarges the fonts for better readability (which might be important for people in their 40ies ). I experienced setting values 450 or 480 is still OK. Higher values hide some things from the productivity bar.
Unfortunately, picture password is not working any more.
It seems that the display needs about 150 mAh per hour with the reduced resolution. Can someone check the initial energy consumtion to quantify the gain (if any).

Anyone know how to correct the corrupt BBM icon in the HUB after the resolution/DPI change? The BBM icon turns huge on any density change and it looks incredibly ugly.

After having the reduced resolution active for one week, I'm switching back to default. It seems that for daily use there isn't much difference. I observed a couple of scaling issues (mainly with BB apps but also others) and decided it's not worth. I guess it will make one for sure when playing 3d games, but that's not my device usage.

The reason why BlackBerry apps get affected is because they don't follow proper Material design guidelines. Sadly I feel that this is something that will plague devices for a while to come. So far I too am not noticing much difference in performance or battery life.

is there a way to pin the image on the bottom right of the screen?
also, does it completely ignore touches outside of the image? ...or am I reading wrong and the image will be stretched over the entire screen?

The screen uses only almost half of the energy when it's in FullHD mode. That's a HUGE difference I can live with those little scaling issues here and there.

priv resolution, dpi
i change just the resolution, does it have a point, i do not wana change the dpi for the fact that is going to overscale a lot of thing, and for exemple i can not change my whatsapp photo if i change the dpi....

What about 720p-mode which is more natural to upscale on qHD than 1080p? Has anyone tried?

Interesting thread. I just bought a new phone because the priv battery is dying, and I couldn't find a new one. But I had to drop screen resolution to do that, since I didn't want a physically larger device. I miss the sharp resolution and greater "real estate" of the priv screen.

(Root) Always 4K Screen Resolution

When it comes to screen Sony definitely tops the list above other manufacturers but our Xperia Z5 Premium doesn't always use 4K HD Resolution Screen, only when watching 4k video or things right? so why not to make it work in always 4K mode? more pixels- more fun
Warning: Note that on high brightness battery usage will be much more than 1080p screen mode

1.Download Terminal Emulator from play store
2. open app and write "su" without quotes
3. give it root access and write " wm size 2160×3840 " also without quotes
Screen will became "ugly", to fix it now type "wm density 820" also without quotes. after that all should work fine, play any video and you'll notice color changes and much More improvements, however there's always a way back to 1080p
to do it
wm size 1080×1920
wm density 420

Just thank you! It gave it a different and nice appearance but I noted two things. First the phone works a little slower and the other thing is when I tried to make a call the caller interface didn’t open so I was not able to make the normal functions like turning off the microphone, hanging up the call, etc. Unfortunately I had to put it back to 1080p.

you don't need root for this, you can do it with adb command though a pc without root
"adb shell wm size 2160×3840"
"adb shell wm density 820"

Hi Guys! I know you have lurking about that unutilized 4k screen of our phone, Why not enjoy "1440x2560" density of 534 works perfectly fine the only down side are glitchy looking start-up since it was designed to in 1080p and multi tasking has no thumbnails on it about it looks and feels good!
Just do
adb shell wm size 1440x2560
adb shell wm density 534 <-----------IMO this is the density, fonts looks smaller but legible.

Seriously guys..... this is changing the resolution of the VIRTUAL display (not the physical one), so like this you are getting 4k emulation on 1080p physical resolution.
To change the physical display resolution you need to do "quite a few more steps", which cannot be done in a simple way like this (and surely not without root).
Moreover, even if -- yes, there is a way -- it's not doable on stock ROMs, as it misses the required implementation.
I am almost done here so, on Open Devices, you will be able to get real [email protected] whenever you want."
