HTC Shift X9500 (Help Installing Windows XP) - Shift General

I just picked up a HTC Shift X9500 for the kids to play around on (instead of messing with my laptop )
Anyway, Vista sucks obviously, so I want to install Windows XP on this thing. I got windows installed ok. Installed all the drivers. However, here is the issue I'm having. If I DO NOT install the Video drivers, the WiFi adapter works & connects. I install the video drivers & the desktop looks nice, but then the Wifi doesn't work. Just shows as "Unknown Device" in the Device MGR. I can go back into the Device MGR & uninstall the video drivers & restart the system. Then BANG...the wifi is operational again. So, I'm not sure if I got a bad wifi driver or incorrect video drivers. Does ANYONE have all the drivers for this device (Using XP that is..)
It seems to run A LOT faster using XP over Vista. I know the device is old & very outdated, but it would be cool for the kids if I can get it working. There are instructions on this forum to install XP step by step but the links are dead & I can't follow the process. Anyone help??

Hmm thats weird. I use windows 7 on it. Also alot faster than vista.
Wifi is still not working with me. But when i installed the videocard driver. None of my games would boot. So i un installed it. And i can play every game that can run on this old hardware. Seems to me the video driver isnt the best one written.
was it hard to get xp? I may try to dual boot to see wich seems faster with the games

Would be nice if that was in a website without restrictive data transfer limits with no way to bypass them.

It’s 2021 … is anyone still playing with the shift? I guess my battery is completely dead or there is another problem because even plugged in it won’t come to life. Maybe my charger is t working.. any suggestions? Should I just put the shift in the trash?

shift batteries are good, mine is from 2008 and still perfect
maybe your htc is fully discharged, that is normal because snapvue drink the battery when the pc is off, mine wasnt used in almost an year, it wouldnt turn on, but put it charhing and start to charge...

Ecxelent on shift is that can run without battery on external power. Both WM and PC. New phone can give to trash if battery is death.

hello! does anybody here have the xp drivers for the vista? i succesfully installed it but i'm missing the drivers, can somebody send them to me?

possible xp on shift?

speed and response on vista at shift is really slow.
any chance to install xp on it?
This is something I am interested in as well.
I am ordering a HTC shift today when it arrives I try and will make a image of the hardrive/vista and then try loading XP to see.
Just go ahead and load XP, you can always restore Vista from the hidden backup partition on the drive.
Bear in mind that HTC are unwilling to release the needed drivers for Vista, let alone XP.
XP Tablet Edition
I have already done this and it's a breeze.
However you have no functionality for touch as the drivers are not there.
But on XP you have 800MB RAM free and it's like lightening...
Let's hope we can get XP drivers for the touch screen, i can live without the snapvue and control etc and without the origami thing, but i have gone back to vista due to the lack of touch ability.
Regards
Blitz
Was the touch pad working in xp? as that might be livable. It should be possible to sort out a dual boot then we can have the three operating systems on the one device, vista, winxp and windows mobile.
dual boot
tried that by partitioning drive in two but it breaks vista, you need to install xp then vista but you can't do that either as you miss the builtin drivers for vista.
the mousepad worked fine
besides the touch screen, is there any other hardware component that does NOT work under XP? i was under the impression that lacking XP drivers, a bunch of stuff did not work.

Hey blitzspear, I have managed to get XP working alongside the HTC vista oem install. First you boot into in to vista and shrink the current drive c using disk management mmc, then reboot into xp install using usb cd. After XP completes Copy bootsect.exe from the boot folder of a Windows Vista DVD and paste it into your Windows XP Windows\system32 folder. Then in XP CMD issue the following command bootsect /NT60 ALL. Ok now the only issue I have is getting all the drivers, where did you get the drivers from? I have downloaded the XP drivers for the graphics card ironically the file is called winvista_1523.exe althoughintel webpage assures that this driver covers vista xp 2k etc. but it dont work! So just wondering if you could point me in the right direction
Drivers
Sadly I didn't find them all...
Only ones are the intel VGA (which disables some of the resolutions)
A usb network and sound and the synaptics mousepad.
The rest were missing which is why i'm back on vista.
Regards
Blitz
PS - I think if we get SD / wifi / GPS / in WM6 this will do what i need it to do and then i'll keep vista when plugged in so i can have it on best performance instead of balanced mode. This may be the best compromise for many people.
But in my opinion HTC could have made this SOOOO much better if they'd put Tablet XP on it... or gave us 2GB of RAM in VISTA...
Device Manager?
Can you guys post a list of devices that were not installed correctly when in XP? I see that the touch screen doesn't work...do we have other devices that were not identified or functioning properly in the device manager?
If we can identify the devices maybe the chipset manufacturer can supply drivers, etc.

I actually got most of the devices working (HTC ones)by searching the inf directory of the original Vista installer. However touchscreen is not identified or does not work, the SDIO Wifi card is not seen by XP at all, although BT works

Shift'n'Vista Ultimate

Hello everyone,
i upgraded my shift to vista ultimate 32.
After 2/3 hours of installation everythings work well.
BUT the touchscreen seems disabled. rebooted but is already disabled. tried to change tablet and pen imput. but nothing..
it continue to be disabled.
In the same time i upgraded an hp tablet to vista ultimate and also in it tablet functionality is disabled.
But going in msconfig i saw that wacom service is disabled. enabled it, rebooted and tablet funcionality was reabilited. well!
I'm sad. Whit my splendid shift don't find nothing. no driver, no disabled software (i don't know the name of the software who manage tablet function).
Noone knows something about?
Many thank to all.
Ema from Italy..
Have you tried "C:\Program Files\HTC\AI_VISTA\setup.exe"? This starts the HTC Shift Final Installation. It helped me after SP1.
And there is the "WQindows to standard" button in ShagControl.
Whatever that does....
Axel
not tried, now i'm using the recovered business edition, but i'm going to upgrade to ultimate and try your suggestion.
Thanks

Hi there,
How did you install Ultimate?
I have copied the contents of a Windows Vista Ultimate installation DVD to a 4GB SD card and used that to upgrade to Ultimate.
The thing is that the Shift can't boot from SD (or can it??) so I didn't get to format the hard drive, which I wanted.
ultimate
i've used an external dvd and installed with the vista dvd. like a normal pc.

XP not seeing Touch HD, possible driver issue?

Good Morning to all,
Firstly hello to all on the forum, got my Touch HD at the weekend and have already found this forum very useful, especially in getting the favourtie people pictures to stop looking so crap.
I now have a problem I need to ask about. I have plugged my HD into my Vista 64bit machine and it picks up fine, lets me access the HD as if it was an external source. I then managed to set it up via activesync, not through choise just couldnt find anything else. Got it connected and syncing via bluetooth as well.
I have now come into work and plugged it into my work XP SP2 machine and it starts installing all the windows mobile stuff and then comes up with could not complete blah blah, when you click for more info its an unknown device.
Is this a driver issue, i.e. do I need to download one for my XP machine to recognise modern day tech?
Have got the number for HTC support but thought I would ask here first as I really like the way everyone manages to explain everything so clearly.
Thanks in advance
Jody
You should just have to install Active Sync 4.5 on your XP machine and off you go.
Appoligies if you did this, but you didn't mention above
If you still having problems, what's the full error text?
Ta
Dave
Activesync is installed, and has been uninstalled and re-installed just to make sure.
The message states that the USB device is not recognised by Windows and need to try re-installing it.
Thing is, it did just about manage a connection earlier ActiveSync showed connecting and then popped up and said unable to connect to device press ok to troubleshoot and ran some scans.

Had similar problems, but it was the Windows XP firewall blocking activecync
Thanks, but we stopped the windows firewall client when we were investigating this anyway.
Possible solution
Good day,
My XP didnt detect HD as well. Im using Active sync 4.5. To work around this, go to:
Settings>USB to PC>Enable faster data sync
Uncheck this option. This solved my problem.
Good luck. Cheers
Hello, have tried unticking that box as well.
I have uninstalled Activesync again, and reinstalled off of the CD. All installs ok, plug the device in for the first time and select activesync on the handset, it installs the pocketUSB Snc on the PC and then comes up your device could not be installed properly. Open device manager and the PocketUSB Sync shows with a yellow explanation mark on it saying that the device could not be started.
Have now also tried it on an XP SP3 VM Machine, it originally kicked up same windows error. Then ActiveSync on the VM and device showed connecting, then they both stopped and no further.
Problem fixed.... Useful hint for anyone reading this... dont use a different miniUSB cable, or make sure you certainly dont use a cheap one.... I borrowed someone's in the office who was sinking another HTC device and it worked first time.
Thanks to all your inputs
Jody

Drivers

Hi, does anyone have the drivers for the shift that are not available on HTC's website???
mianly the Sonix USB Webcam...
i updated with Windows Update and it 'broke' the drive...funnily enough it also happens on hp and asus laptops...
anyway i need that driver if anyone has one...cheers
Why don't you update the driver that not recognized by device manager. Access the internet and update may it works. Good luck
Roll the driver back to the previous version, via the device manager.
oll back was a good idea but too late now as i dleted the edvice and ticket the 'delete drivers' option too.
so yeah back to my original question....
does anyone have the sonix camera drivers???
Ooooops , I've not noticed that you made updating for your driver by device manager. Any way, I've took a packup for my drivers of my shift using Driver Magician. May it helps you I hope

Shift cam driver missing
After uninstalling Dorgem, my HTC Shift's webcam driver seems to have disappeared. Windows update is not picking anything up to replace it.
Under my Device Driver, the only entry under "Sound, video and game controllers" is "High Definition Audio Device".
I didn't recognise any of the HTC drivers as being for the Shifts' camera.
Can anyone identify for me what driver I need for the cam, and possibly where I can download it?
I up this thread for a similar problem: my shift webcam disappeared from my hardware list, it's simply no more present or recognised in my hardware list, even if i attempt to detect it as new hardware.
tried almost anything, any clue?
My web-cam started to disappear since I installed an xp compatible logitech software for a cordless keyboard and mouse. A couple of days ago, I upgraded the Win7 beta I had for a Pro version and even though I decided not to install that logitech software, I still get the same problem, the webcam is gone and I have to chat without the video feature...
Therefore, the only solution I have come to discover for now, is to completely turn off the device and disconnect all devices hooked to it either by the usb or vga port.
Once everything is disconnected, I would turn on the device and start win7 normally and voila, my webcam is back again and I can reconnect every device until I restart the system and need the webcam again, having to do the same process again and again...
the drvers for shift are still
the drivers for shift are still their on htc site the reason why you cant find it they took it off on certain regions try europe or other you willl find it

Windows 7 x64 and EVO 4G Connectivity issues?

Anyone else having these.
It worked only once for me.
I'll plug in my Evo then windows will detect and ATB device and the it will disappear and I dont know where.
The SDCARD will show for a secord or two and then disappear. Anyone else having this issue?
Having the same issues. Will show up, then disappear. Haven't been able to figure out a fix yet.
HTC Sync Update for EVO 4G (Sprint) (2.0.35) | 06.04.2010
http://member.america.htc.com/download/Driver/HTC EVO (Sprint)/HTCSync2.0.35.exe
Please try installing the lastest version of HTC Sync which will inclue the latest drivers for Windows 7 x64.
Already have that downloaded and still getting the appear/disappear issue
Working fine here. Win 7 Ult x64. Evo is auto-detected everytime i plug in... wish i had more info and could help.
yea everything is great on my 64bit Windows 7 Ult... uninstall and reinstall the usb root hubs..?
Everything is working fine here too on my end. No issues connecting the Evo to my Windows 7 x64 system.
I can mount fine, but can't flash RUUs or get HTC sync to actually recognize the phone
With the Hero, Windows 7 x64 would always install the wrong drivers and cause the exact issues described.
Go into Device Manager, find the EVO, and click update driver. Then manually find the driver by going to the HTC Sync directory and installing the Windows 7 x64 drivers. That is what works for the Hero, and it says My HTC in device manager when installed correctly.
Mine works fine. Though it is the first day. We'll see.

Yeah the problem with me its that the device disappears from device manager. It wont display at all. It will display briefly as some sort WPD Device and then it will disappear.
I have tried installing the latest HTC Sync software and reinstalling everysingle usb device to no avail.
When I am able to catch the wpd device I trying updating the drive but it doesnt like the HTC windows 7 x64 drivers. It says theyre not 64bit compatible.
For the people having problems...Are you plugging the device into a USB hub or is this straight into your PC/Laptop port? If it is a hub, is it a "powered" hub or one that draws it's power straight from the bus? If it is directly into the machine, what type of machine is it (HP, Dell, custom, etc.)? If it is custom build...what type of motherboard are you using (Asus, MSI, Gigabyte, etc)? (I ask this because some companies implement USB slightly differently and it can cause issues in some configurations)
Secondly, if this is straight into the machine, what other devices are plugged into the same internal connection (keyboard, mouse, scanner, printer, etc.). If the USB ports are in close proximity, it's a good bet they all run off the same internal connector. If only a keyboard and mouse share the connector...what type of keyboard (logitech with LCD, etc). Some keyboard and mouse combinations are high power draws and can overload the internal hub. This would make your phone connect for an instant and disconnect (overload state), since the phohe actually starts to pull power to charge, regardless if you're using it as a disk drive or sync.
All of that info will help us to troubleshoot with you.
Thanks!
Possible fix
I was having the same problems as many of you. I'm using Win 7 64, had the latest version of HTC Sync and the thing just wasn't finding my phone. The only thing that would work was if I restarted my computer and plugged it in. It found my phone right away and loaded up the HTC Sync just fine.
Only problem is, it only works that one time after a reboot of my computer. If I wanted to re-sync again, I would have to restart my computer.
It's an ugly fix, but for those of you that haven't had any luck syncing, this may be your best bet.
Mine with W7 x64 will mount fine every time but if I try to pick internet sharing, it never works. The only thing that pops up is an 'android phone' entry with a yellow triangle exclamation point under 'other devices' in device manager. I've got htc sync installed, and in fact I can use ADB fine... but I can't get normal usb internet tethering to work at all.
yeah its weird...i took my phone to a work machine that has windows 7 32bit and it worked fine on that machine... now i plugged it into my own machine and now my machine is picking it up
Look under device manager and you will see adb device unknown. Install driver and it will change to htc device.
