Recording 4K video overheat. Camera App closes at 3 minutes - Xperia Z5 Premium General

Hello,
When I record 4K video with my Z5P, I get heat warning at around 2 minutes mark and camera app closes around 3 minutes. Anybody else experiencing the same problem? Other than this, my Z5P and its camera work absolutely fine. Btw, my firmware is still 32.0.A.6.170, still haven't received an update.

Hello, I have the same problem.
What I discovered is that when shooting in 4K or 1080p 60fps temperature protection is triggered. 30fps 1080p there is no problem.

I just tested recording 1080p 60fps. It too overheated and closed at around 2~3 minutes. 30fps is working fine. I think this is software issue. Maybe it is worth trying the repair via pc companion but I don't want to wipe my phone now. Some are reporting that 32.0.A.6.200 is fixing numerous problems. I guess I'll wait for it and see what happens.

same for me.
60 fps stops at 3 mins,
for 30fps 1080, first 35 mins, 2nd 30 mins. tried that already during our christmas party, when a certain band was performing.

No access to this page?
Edit :
Ok now working
Did a quick test before I head off - of 1080p 60fps with steadyshot on standard
Got to 10 mins with no heat warning.
Room temperature 20c to 22c
I'll do a better comparison in future of all video modes
Edit once more: video duration is 10.14
File size is 2.2gb

I tried 4K with Steadshot for around 30mins, and I found that 45ºC will force stop the camera

The z series has always had this, so do the Samsung phones.
They are thin sealed units its not a fault

U boys have some wierd .. Phones idk on youtube a guy filmed 1hour 4k on z5p
---------- Post added at 11:01 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:54 AM ----------
I tried and i stopped it on 6 mins because i didt have time not any warning for me
---------- Post added at 11:05 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:01 AM ----------
Well i cant say anything really cus im on a custom rom wich has alot of improvements... Havr you updated your fw? The new updte (62mb) has some overheating stopping things. edit; you havent got a update yet???? Thats wierd i had it ready when i bought z5p and just updated it on the same day. But now im on the rom so yeah..

I just tested with my z5p.
I stopped at 25 min, but i never got any warnings.
Room temp is 23,5 celcius and my phone was charging the entire time, which also would increase temp.

@xirt0n
Did you check 60 fps or 4k and if steadyshot on or not etc etc

The first test I did was standard 4k video, with steadyshot off and filetype h.264
Later on I tested with file type h.264 and h.265 and also with steadyshot at the only option it gave me which was standard or off, and i went with standard. All was done with 4k video. I dont actually know where i can find 30 or 60 fps. I am using RomAur btw.
See image to see my few options while in 4k mode. The entire camera app looked different before i flashed RomAur which is .170 and i went from official. 200.
(turns out i cant post links yet!)

Awesome video potential

I've just videoe my TV screen (with ceiling light above me too)
The stock camera app recording was fuzzy around the edge (grainy) and the TV picture wasn't that clear at all (was half zoomed in)
So then I used the LG camera app. Turned FPS to 60 and rate to 10mbit... EPIC!
Yes it uses more space, but the quality is amazing!
Anybody wanting to test video capability, download LG camera app, set FPS to 60 and check it out! (it doesn't look, great until you start recording)
Am just uploading a sample, video which is on highest settings in LG camera app. It's a whopping 250mb for just under a minute!!

what video settings did you use, what bitrate did you use. the samples good for the condition, i think we need to test this in normal daylight to see what it can really do. I took a video 32 seconds and it was 80mb

If this is the app
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=rubberbigpepper.lgCamera&hl=en
then 60fps not supported, I just checked it out, 1 file on 30fps and 17mbit, the other file at 60fps and at 60mbit or whatever it was. Both files are at 29fps, so until sony adds a [email protected], I don't think it will be supported.

That is something else, fps means frames per second and i have just checked on my pc and the videos max out at 30.1fps.
Well in this case Hz and fps actually are the same, as long as we are talking about the captured framerate and not the outputted one, which can very well differ.
Still you're right! MX Player is detecting bull****, Media Info on my PC does show 29,716 fps.
Would have liked it to by different though, 60fps would have been great for some slowmo action

nah im sorry Hz and fps are 2 completly different things.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hertz
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frame_rate
MX player indicated correctly, it just didnt show you fps
Hz describes a frequency and just means "per second" and normally when I use it to describe framerates people do understand what I mean, even if fps is the better word
If you take a look at my earlier Screenshot you will see that MX Player never claimed it to be Hz, it just says "Bildfrequenz", which means framerate, and does not use any unit.
you're right, the quality seems much better with lgCamera. :good:
EDIT: also took some pictures but the quality of them does not seem to be improved.
Well either way, whether it improves FPS or not (which I didn't check it.actually did), it does improve the video massively. That video was captured using the highest bitrate, which is what defines the quality of the video
video. You don't have to use maximum setting all the time, but it truly is much better than the stock app.

4k recording is great...if only it lasted

I used the 4K recording mode last night....fantastic but couldn't record for more than 3 mins before it got to hot... Over and over again.
Something is wrong with your phone. Mine would last only 5-6 minutes. I exchanged it for a new one and it did 48 minutes of 4K video no problem
I think people posting this kind of stuff about 4K video problems should at least include whether it's set to record 30fps or 60fps... Comparisons are useless without this information.
All the recording type saus is h.264.
What are you trying to say? Can you not simply answer that you were shooting @ 30fps or @ 60fps?
I can't see the option to select the frame rate in the 4k video app, only h264 or h265
What firmware version are you on? The newer 32.0.A.6.152 and 32.0.A.6.200 have a different camera interface which includes a camera setting (when in video mode) to shoot video @30fps or @60fps. Maybe the older firmwares present different options as seen in the "6. Calm your nerves" section here: http://newzandroid.blogspot.ie/2015/10/9-ways-to-make-xperia-z5-camera-even.html
Is there a system update available for your device?

You're speaking about FullHD (1080p) recording. 4K recording is done in 30fps without option to change it.

Took me a while to find 4K... Yes, I was getting mixed up with FullHD alright. Sorry. I hardly ever shoot video.
Sony have said its a software issue.... And I need to have my phone flashed
4K video sucks anyway. None of the phones can take steady video. FHD with IA SteadyShot is way, way better in actual use, especially while travelling/walking/moving about. When Sony can use the closed-loop actuator for 4K, then it'll be good!
Guys would like to know your opinion about the temps that I'm having with my Xperia Z5. My version is E6603 rev 3.
I made the following temperature tests and used the cputemp as the app for monitoring. In all tests I started with the cpu temperature around the 34 - 36 and 26c environment
Shoot in 4K with phone on the table
30 minutes, max cpu temp 70c, 46c battery
Shoot in 4k with minimal contact (phone over two pens)
10 minutes, max cpu temp 70c, 46c battery
Shoot in FullHD @ 60fps with minimal contact (phone over two pens)
Almost 5, max cpu temp 71c, 48c battery
Shoot in FullHD @ 60fps on the table
15min max cpu 70c, 46c battery
Playing Relic Run (tomb raider)
max cpu temp 62c, battery 44c - 46c
Playing Real Racing 3
max cpu temp 56c, 44c battery
Comment and compare the temperatures. What do you think?
I dont think the temp was getting to hot it was the fact it shut the app off that was annoying
Steadyshot will shorten the recording time quite significantly. If you disable it you will be able to record for much longer before overheating.

Youtube craps out in 1440p

Has anyone else noticed this? While watching a 1440p video on youtube, after a minute or two, it will start dropping frames like crazy. Sometimes the video will stop entirely (audio still plays). I've noticed this on MKBHD and Linus Tech Tips channels. If I set the quality to 1080p (or anything lower) manually, it plays just fine. It's not a buffering issue, because the audio still plays. It seems like the phone is trying to reduce the cpu and youtube isn't capable of playing 1440p video with the reduced cpu. It never happens at the beginning of a video. I didn't have this problem on my V10, ever.
Can you give links to exact videos? I just tested on this on
https://youtu.be/hddwAIXbKZo
Looked amazing. Ran in 1440 with zero issues.
This was happening to me as well. SD820 variant. On WiFi. A restart seems to have fixed the problem...for now...hopefully.
Exynos will breeze through this. SD fail.

Okay I can see what you're talking about now. I just watch this video. Its default was like 720. I changed it to 1440 and it froze. Sound continues video stops. I minimize the video and closed it then reopened it it stayed 1440 and ran fine.
https://youtu.be/RCgPD2sfbAQ
Not sure what's causing it but I can definitely see the problem. I don't want to have to close and reopen a video to get it to play properly.
These are two of the ones I remember it happening on:

That video may not be long enough... it happens after a minute or two on my phone, and that video is only 1:45 long.
This 1440p issue happens on my LG G4 as well. I'm getting my Exynos S7 Edge on Friday

Happens on my V10... there are multiple threads in the V10 forums about the issue.
Are you guy's by any chance using T-Mobile? I know with their Binge On feature, they try to reduce and limit overall quality of any video feed not set up with the Binge On program. YouTube is not set up with it.
I get extremely choppy and dropped frames on 1440p. Also no 60fps option at all something is definitely wrong. My s6 edge was able to play 1440p 60fps with no issues at all.

I'm on T-Mobile, but in my case, it is not related to BingeOn. I have BingeOn disabled, and this was on WiFi. As I said in the original post, it isn't a buffering issue because the audio keeps going. Also, as others have noticed, if you minimize it and come back, the video will go for a little bit and then stop again.

Tested this ^^ and worked fine for me..I don't have any 60fps option though but it seems it plays the 60fps on the highest setting any way, just don't mention it .
Anyone try uninstalling YouTube updates and going back to the version that shipped with the phone? Since it's happening with other phones it could just be an app bug introduced with the latest update.
All videos play perfectly on my Exynos gs7 edge at 1440p

Definitely a Youtube issue as it's happening on too many different devices. I noticed it on my wife s6 edge + but not yet on my s7 edge.
All 1440p fine on exynos
useless reply, but I followed the link for the "2K" video sample (couple minutes long) and that played without issue via the YouTube app.
After that there was a link for a 4K Video Beauty of Nature video (about 31 minutes long) and THAT locked up after a few minutes of playback. (addendum: I'm a sucker for good Nature, but holy crap is that a pretty video.)
AT&T GS7E, all current updates, playing over mobile data. SpeedTest.net reports > 50Mb/s downstream at my location so bandwidth is probably not a factor.
Firefox plays the video without issue it seems, 13 minutes in without issue. Of course I can't be sure it's playing a 1440p stream, but it looks the same to my old eyes. :^(
I've played all Youtube videos linked and have no issues. Tried many thers via the Youtube app a7 1080p and 1440p and found no issues on my Exynos S7E

Youtube issue

I can't play video on HD on my axon 7 using the youtube app only max 480p. Anyone whit the same problem?
Edit: after some test i've discovered that using youtube app i can't watch video on 720p60 neither 1080p60 but only "standard" HD video. Is that normal?
Nope I don't have that issue
I noticed that too. It was there before. Now it's gone.
---------- Post added at 05:34 AM ---------- Previous post was at 05:18 AM ----------
I found out the problem. The latest YouTube update screwed up the video quality options. HTC M10 users are having the same problem.
Not got that issue, got the sound sync issue though.
This is a YouTube issue. I looked up other devices that had this issue and it turns out that the Samsung Galaxy S7 had the problem just after launch. It took two months to fix it.
Looks like the video quality issue is a YouTube problem. I used Dailymotion and I can change between 720p60fps and 1080p60fps.
I have this issue. It's really annoying. The image freezes and the audio carries on. Only happens with hd content.
Is this still affecting anyone else?
I have had my ZTE Axon 7 for 10 days and experiencing the same problem. The visuals on YouTube videos are stuttering or freezing completely when playing 4K videos at 1440p at 30fps or 60fps. I have also experienced it on 1080p 60fps. This causes the audio to fall out of sync. I have compared it to my Samsung Note 4 and S7 Edge and have no problem playing same video. I have even factory reset phone to no avail. Emailed Gearbest (supplier) and ZTE (No help) and offered me an exchange or refund but have no stock. Really like the phone so don't want a refund on something for an problem I believe can be fixed as seems like a software issue. Great Value phone!

10 mins limit on videos?

Is there a way that we can remove the limit of the video recordings in the camera?
just picked up a s8 over the weekend and ran into this problem. wondering if you found a solution? the only thing i have come across is to use Open Camera which will automatically resume after the 10min break (records a new clip) but I've found the 60fps video quality to be less than satisfactory. i may have to try and up the bitrate to see if that makes a difference.

If you're using the stock Samsung camera app, the only way is through custom roms, outside of that like mentioned there are other apps but you are losing quality
I'm new to the s8, but with my previous phones, the 10 minute limit was only on 4k video. If I dropped the resolution to lower it was unlimited.
