5.0.4 Root for AFTV2! The time to Root is NOW!!!! Updated - Fire TV General

Follow down the bottom of the page To the 5.0.4 part!
(Originally Posted)
So I just read this on another forum, apparently Amazon are almost ready to roll out the next update on the Amazon Fire Tv 2, so if your undecided on do you root or not or your planning on buying one to root you had better think or act fast!
Here's the information from the other forum -
If you own a 2nd-gen Fire TV and have been blocking software updates up until now with the intension to root your device, you should probably allow the device to receive the current latest software update, which is version 5.0.3.1 (534011720). The first indication that a new 5.0.4 software update is on the horizon has surfaced. This software update may block the recently discovered rooting method which currently only works on 2nd-gen Fire TVs that are running software version 5.0.3.1. Once software update 5.0.4 is released, you will not be able to update to 5.0.3.1. It’s possible the current rooting method will be adapted to work on future 2nd-gen Fire TV software versions, but it’s not guaranteed. If you’ve been procrastinating on buying a 2nd-gen Fire TV, you probably still have time to order one now (on sale for $84.99) and update it before the new software version is released, but only if you act fast.
If you want to Root get it in the forums, you will need a usb A cable (about £2-£10 depending on where you get it from) & you can get Root on most machines I got mine on a Virtual Machine via my Windows 10 laptop but cam be done on Linux & other systems, there is also an easy step by step youtube guide which is noob friendly.
(Updated Dec 24 2015)
Ok so the Root has been updated yet again, there is a fast root option for 5.0.4 or you can do the original way which I will be doing myself when I have time, you will need to unroot from 5.0.3 first, then update to official 5.0.4 then do the root process & finally block ota updates again .
NOTE
As per usual follow this guide at your own risk, don't moan if your amazon fire tv2 bricks, blows up or sets on fire! I will not take responsibility if anything goes wrong, you make your mind up If you want to root or not? I'm just passing the message on
You can follow the guide from here-
https://gitlab.com/zeroepoch/aftv2-tools/wikis/home
I do not own or made anything to do with this root i am only passing on the infomation, make sure you leave the devs thanks on Xda
Happy Rooting

I can't imagine Amazon releasing a firmware update coming up to Christmas.
I'm sure it will be after Christmas when everyone's back in work in case of problems arise.

I know buy if they have updated AFTV 1, AFTV Stick they most already have the AFTV 2 almost ready too?

So I just ordered a box. If the update is already rolled out, how do we get to the required firmware (5.0.3.1) to root without updating to the new firmware?

Panics over!!!
I just received my boxes, off Argos in the UK, off Topic did anyone know Argos deliver at 7 o'clock in the morning and on a Sunday, I didn't until now. lol
anyways, since I heard the door I got up, remember this is 7 a clock in the morning, ran downstairs open the door signed for the package, as quickly as possible.
Ripped the packaging off, and unplugged my existing fire TV box, and then Plugged in the new one, logged in with my Amazon account there was no new update, not sure if this is a false negative report from somebody else.
but you can clearly see from the screenshot there isn't an update, just yet in the uk.
but its probably a good idea to get them rooted now since Christmas is only 2 weeks away and I'm sure Amazon will release the update after then.
Please bear in mind, this might be a tip for other people, as soon as I was logged in to my Amazon account I did rip out the Ethernet cable just to make sure

And how do you get the new update after you have rooted?

Just ordered an AFTV2 yesterday, and it's scheduled to be delivered tomorrow. I have already blocked the update ip in my router, so hopefully it arrives with 5.0.3.1 still on it.

I have updated few minutes ago. Root is away. Plex still only 2.0 sound. But DTS passthrough is fixed.

Just wait for now, the next steps will be a recovery, bootloader & custom rom (with custom update), now we have root the Devs will be working hard to get us all where we want to be very soon In the near future I'd expect? [emoji6]

You have to wait until there is recovery and prerooted update images. Right now, even if you wanted to take the update, it will fail because /system has been modified.
To update everyone. I have my attack vector in place to allow the Fire TV to load recovery. Now I am working on actually compiling it and getting it all to run nicely.

Wow, good news. Maybe i can close soon my passtrough thread in the troubleshooting section, since it looks like passtrough works with the 5.0.4 update.
Stereo downmix sounds horrible.
@baggerbodo
Which receiver do you have? Did you have problems with kodi and passtrough before this update?

That was it, just go into settings on Super SU, click unroot and then reboot. I haven't checked on the flag set, but under settings it still says "custom", so I am assuming the flag is set.

Well, I have an answer as to whether root will work on this new FW, and the answer is yes! One odd thing though, when it was done rooting and it rebooted, I got a message about the FW update failing, which is obviously wrong since I successfully updated the FW, it must trip something that makes the device think an update failed.

make sure you unfreeze any apps. if you uninstalled the apps via titanium then you may have to odin back to stock. some of these updates look to see if the files it needs to update exist.
also, if the update fails to go through the first time (after actually downloading it) and you the the error gotta use kies warning. just boot into recovery and wipe cache and try again.
as a confirmation, bean's root still works. i didn't get the update failed though. i rebooted fully after accepting the update before running the root.
i don't see much improvement in speed yet, but chrome is all i've tested as the old reader's site runs crappily slow in landscape still (but it doesn't seem as crappily bad). vertical runs smoother though. if the old reader is taxing on chrome then overall chrome should be better. i haven't run any benchmarks and never will. a 100% increase from .01 seconds to.005 seconds only makes bars on comparison charts bigger without actually affecting the performance in real life.

After I did the update and it was all finished, I did get the "update successful" message, I just got the "update unsuccessful" message on the reboot after rooting. I did forget to defrost the Knox Apps, but since the update was successful, it must not have touched those.

Agreed, it feels smoother, I haven't played with multiuser much but do you have to reinstall all apps on the new accounts? Would it take up a lot of space?

i've been through four reboots and haven't gotten the update unsucessfull message yet. on my first reboot after rooting i did freeze all the knox, fota and software update apps. so it could be why i don't see it.

That's probably it, all I froze before unrooting and applying the update were the Knox apps (which I also happened to forget to unfreeze), I didn't touch FOTA or Software Update.

New FireTV arrived today - Still rootable!

I missed out on buying from Staples for $74 the other day (they were out of stock when I went to order), so I bit the bullet and ordered from Amazon directly, while the price is still $84. It arrived today, shipped out of Tennessee.
Being the optimist, I took the precautions to block software updates, and I'm thrilled to say that the FireTV I received has 5.1.1.0.1_user_510055620 installed on it.
So, if you think you've missed the boat on getting a rootable FireTV, as of yesterday, Amazon was still shipping units with the old firmware, so you might still be in luck.
Pardon me, I've got a FireTV to root... :victory:

Unfortunately as the whole support for german language and region was introduced in the new so far "unrootable" firmware i guess german customers won't be that lucky...
I'm getting my FTV from Amazon's $84 deal tomorrow, so hopefully it's still the rootable variety. I'm setting up OpenDNS with the assumption that it is, or that some smart person figures out how to root the version that I get...
Hey guys the new one I got today is also x. 620
I've looked thorough the guides but I am not sure what the next steps to root are. Would anyone want to tell me quickly what steps I need to do to root this baby?
In one of the guides it mentions that from this firmware I should let it update... I'm sure you can understand why that step makes me nervous.
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using XDA Premium HD app
I don't suggest you let it update... Have you followed the guide to block OTA updates? Do that first, if you haven't already.
I started at the level you are on. I just rooted it following the guide here:
http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-root-the-amazon-fire-tv/
After you are done with that, install ClockWork Recovery by following this guide:
http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-install-clockworkmod-custom-recovery-on-the-amazon-fire-tv/
After that, you can update to a pre-rooted image, by following this guide:
http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-install-a-custom-rom-image-on-the-amazon-fire-tv/
That's the path I followed, and it worked out great.
Consider trying adbFire.
Windows, OS X & Linux
Root Amazon Fire TV
Extensive log produced after each run
Install ClockworkMod
Mount USB drives and sticks
Samba file sharing for /usb & /sdcard
Upgrade/Downgrade AFTV firmware
Install/Uninstall Apps
Busybox included
World-wide Llama functionality for XBMC
Checks online for program updates
Backup/Restore XBMC (and forks) data
File Management on Fire TV
Mount AFTV filesystem R/W
and more ...

I think its a cr***shoot. to be honest. I was able to pick up two units with that exact firmware, both routable, then got a third and it must have had a newer firmware on it because with the two addresses blocked it did not allow root. These boxes came from the same staples store by the way, so it just depends on stock available. You got lucky.
Thanks for the replies guys. I was using the initial setup guide and there is a step where it asks you to look at the update that it was trying to install on first boot. I read that piece wrong and thought it said if I was on the 6xxx update I should let it update when in fact it was showing an example of where someone on the 6xxx was being pushed the last rootable update.
Anyway long story short, I downloaded all of the apks to root, rooted and installed Xbox and xposed. Is there any real reason to install a custom recovery at the moment?

So you can back up your system also. I ended up messing one of mine up before I had a chance to install a recovery trying to get Link2SD to work properly. I learned the hard way that if you factory reset it doesn't matter if you have updates disabled and both update links blocked in your router it will still update to the newest version. Now one of my Fire TV's is unrootable and its on the newest software. Lesson learned on that. The other one is running a rooted version of the newest software thanks to rbox's awesome recovery program.

everyone who seems to have received the update was not on 5.0.3. I have yet to see anyone on 5.0.3 confirm they were able to update to 5.0.5.
I'm on 5.0.3 myself.
apparently we can root with kingroot on 5.0.3... so depending on how soon things get figured out related to custom recovery... rooting on 5.0.3 then using a custom recovery and pre-rooted 5.0.5 rom may be quicker than waiting on Amazon.

AFTVNews used to have a list of software updates and their URLs. Dunno if it still does. Unfortunately you can't force the update, as you need to be able to write to /cache to do it.

ok I saw it wasn't updated on @AFTVnews.com site ( http://www.aftvnews.com/software/ ) but I guess without r/w /cache it isn't as important wonder if we could replay the sw update check and use a pc proxy to push it. I'm sure I'm not thinking of something more advanced than what you already have though so I can stop and await the update patiently like everyone else, and see if you have the custom recovery already. I guess I'm just excited that after all this time the stick is finally software rootable. That hardware method was a little too tight soldering for me on the stick... at least without some other donor device to practice a few times

The software talks to the update server over ssl and sends it encrypted data. Can't be faked.
Just got the update on the firetv stick today. I guess I can kingroot it now, but is there any chance that there will be another root method for these?
Update: used kingroot 4.1 and it said it failed, but after a reboot it was in fact rooted. Next used adb with su command to pm disable dcp and ota

I've been meaning to update that page for some time now. It needs to be completely redone since there are now newer devices and forks due to the dev preview and the voice vs non-voice Fire TV Stick split.
The URLs are no secret. I hope to get around to updating my software page next week. For the time being, here is everything missing from that page for those interested.

S5 Official Marshmallow Ported from G900M for Sprint G900P!

Hi guys....I have finally installed the Official Marshmallow from Samsung on my Galaxy S5 Sprint Variant!!!Thanks To @phas69 for providing me the Backup of his official rom....The Backup was made by TWRP......The Phone booted up just fine....,Just extract the Rar file and put it in your TWRP backup folder....Then just restore it....Make sure to uncheck recovery while selecting what to restore....Do it at your own risk as I will not be responsible for and Damage done to your device or Bricked devices.....
The link for the Rom is
https://mega.nz/#!2803wI4D!Wn42RtmnVlnaZRob8HboQOLP9HwFXOCgQX1YrRK0DUc
note:- The Phone reboots every time after the apps optimization is done.....Can Any dev fix it?

That sucks. What about clearing the cacher or actually doing a factory reset in twrp beforehand? Would that make a difference?

Well according to the OP it reboots at the "optimizing apps" screen.
In the "Sprint GS5 android 6.0" thread someone posted they got the 6.0.1 update on Sprint S5 early this morning. He hasn't posted anything else yet other than the update was about 900MB.
So recovery can be flashed on the mm firmware. What about root

Well the Phone crashes every time the after the optimization screen,Only the first time when I did not wipe my data and restored the backup,The phone booted up fine and Asked me for my default launcher,Touchwiz or EasyTouchwiz,After I selected the Touchwiz it brought me right to the home screen and when I opened the settings,The phone hung up and Crashed....Did a reboot and Started crashing after the app optimization screen,Every time at the app optimization screen it optimized to Apps,Systemui and Camera....Maybe there is something wrong with the backup....

After checking for updates relentlessly for days, I just received an OTA update download from Sprint to my all-stock g900p. Here's how I think I got it to download. Could be coincidence, who knows, but this is what just happened.
My service suddenly got poor this week, so I opened the Sprint Zone app, pressed the Network button, and saw that a PRL Update was available. I clicked UpdatevPRL. It updated yo xxx51, but still showed that a PRL update was available. So I did ANOTHER PRL update, and that updated my PRL to 55052, and PRL status changed to Current. I then did a Profile Update, and I powered off my phone. When I started up again, the software update started. It said the download would be 895mb in size. I am on stock BOK4, and I have not run the update.
This is what the info says:

I have been waiting so long for this update [emoji7] , yet my instinct is strong to let someone else try it first [emoji85] [emoji86] [emoji87]
Of course, if any devs want to snag it, I'll be super happy to upload the OTA file for the XDA community to devour!!
I am shocked and amazed that Sprint pushed this thing out on time as advertised. My mind is now officially blown.

The file is on my phone. I am not rooted. Is there some way to grab the OTA file without rooting my phone? I haven't been able to locate the MM OTA file yet. Any ideas? (Just to stay clear, I have received but not installed the Sprint Android 6.0.1 OTA update file for my stock SM G900P)

according to this thread it is stored in the cache/fota_dn folder and you need root access to see the file there. It should have a long string of numbers and letters.

As far as I know, not any more information. I feel like they are going have the ****ty carrier update schedule timing that we are all used to.

Not at the moment. There's no mention of it on TMobile's software update site.
https://support.t-mobile.com/community/phones-tablets-devices/software-updates
But there's no mention of any devices. So that does not mean it's not currently being worked on.

Steps Forward: OnePlus 6T and T-Mobile Partnership
this is a really important info about this deal but it's hard to find it without reading forums for hours

I'm ok with delayed updates but more than a week is honestly unacceptable. Especially since T-Mobile and OnePlus are trying to push this as being almost the same as buying unlocked. (I know they have listed differences and mentioned delayed updates) but if you ask a regular sales person they will brush most of that off. The only reason i'm keeping my T-Mobile OP is because i want to experiment with trying to flash the global OOS when it's available.
I think everyone is overreacting about delayed updates...I think most of us are just gonna unlock the bootloader after the first month..which means Roms which means that ur updates will no longer come from TMO.. Everyone needs to relax lol.

My question is why would a random custom ROM work but not the global OOS? If the modem can't be modified then why would a random ROM work. Also if the modem can't be modified because it's specific to T-Mobile how would the phone work on other carriers once unlocked? What they are telling us isn't making a whole lot of sense.

It's a possibility that the efs partition is locked and can only be modified by a signed ROM. The global OOS could be expecting this partition to be open as on the unlocked version.
The global OOS could be modified to simply not update this partition. Just like a custom ROM would only update the system partition. But out of the box, the global OOS might not work.
This is just speculation, or it could be corporate speak just to deter this kind of process. We'll find out once we start getting our unlock bin files.

No, but it's possible to be updated during an official update. You'd be able to use any sim as the radio info is already written to the partition. I'm literally just spitballing. In all honesty, I'm expecting it to just be corporate speak to make their new partner happy. I don't think we're going to have too many issues converting one phone into the other.
