Ad block - Microsoft Lumia 950/950 XL

Hej everybody,
I have just gotten my 950 xl. I got it very cheap. I am planning to change it with a nexus 6p. The phone self has all hardware I want, but i am afraid of software problems.
I am a android user since I have moved from Windows Mobile because android is open. I use Web browsing too much. (I use between 15-20 gb!)
Therfore it is nice to be able to block ads. Is it possible on Windows phone 10?

I am not sure why are you afraid of the software problems. Android has also awful lot flaws...
I came from IOS/Android.... and I find them both boring... my XL 950 is on its way ))
as for the Adblock , I am also looking forward to have some info about softwares like adaway...

Hopefully someone will create an ad-block extension for Edge once extension support arrives. Failing that I know Firefox for Windows 10 is at least being worked on. I'd be happy with either!

Windows phone is no go for me without adblock.

then it´s a no go for you because there is no adblocker for Windows Mobile

I will change it with a Nexus 6p.

I was so exciting when I saw 950xl in first time feel so powerful then I pre order on nov 16 and got it on nov 25.
Phone not smooth as what I thought.
And old issue very less apps sometime loadding a app for almost two minutes. I use it about two three hours it crush two times. Just not for me this time Microsoft still need more I mean much more improve. I just don't get it Microsoft is huge company put so ****ing money on windown phone why they just put some money for improve apps.
But phone design is good.good looking even they make with plastic but you can change battery or back cover that is good.

Every 950(not the xl) review I have read were not bad neither good. I think the big next ting will be surface phone with Intel inside. Then we will be able to run .exe files. I am excited.

Any chance someone will get access to the system folders, so we can use a "Hosts" file?
The first batch of Lumia 950/950XL's seemed to be bad, mine kept crashing and that first update bricked it. The replacement has newer version of OS and runs a lot better.
While, I also like the idea of an Intel based W10M phone. Theres still the problem that Intel has never solved and will plaque any Intel Lumia/Surface phone that's released "battery life" Android may get a lot of complaints about battery life, but its still far better than an Intel based phone so far.

You'd need interop unlock which currently doesn't work on the 950/950XL. Unfortunately those are the only two Windows-based phones which cannot be unlocked in order to modify the hosts file.
Also, Edge in Continuum mode is badly in need of ad-blocking. Ads on some pages (cough, WindowsCentral) totally destroy the browser/system performance when using Continuum, especially since you get desktop pages (not mobile ones).

Opera 8.6, how's it working for you?

I'm wondering what the experience has been for people using Opera 8.6. I installed the free beta version months ago, which is working, and I'm wondering if it is worth it to buy the latest retail version.
Any Opera users care to comment on their experience?
Generally I find this a good browser but there a few problems which I must mention:-
1) One cannot configure it to store its Cache to SD card. There are ways around this but nothing out of the box.
2) For large web pages with graphics and annimations vertical scrolling becomes really painful as the page does not scroll smoothly with the vertical bar. This gets really really annoying at times.
3) There is a slight lag between pressing of a link and the browser responding. You tend to press the link repeatedly thinking the browser has not responded and then it hangs. However this is something you soon get used to so not that much of a problem.
4) Quite often it does not load the page fully and gets stuck towards the last bits of the page. This is more so for pages with annimations. The progress bar gets stuck when the page has almost been downloaded and only a small percent is left. You then have to refresh the page and usually the 2nd attempt gets you through the full page.
4) The worst problem for me which has really limited its use is that once you have used this it stops some other programs to start and you have to soft-reset. Typical examples are Netfront, Planmaker and Textmaker. After using Opera and having killed it these programs will often not start without a soft-reset.
As I said at the start it is still a good browser and so I am not mentioning the good things but these are just the glitches which seriously mar the user experience of an otherwise good product. In fact though I have a registered version I find myself using it less and less and prefering Netfront over it simply of some of the annoying bugs I mention.
Regards
I agree with smrz completely, and have suffered from the issues outlined, but I'd like to add:
- Opera 8.6 can't handle some pages very well (I'm thinking of the Yahoo pages where you need to log in). It just doesn't render them in any sort of useable fashion.
Having said this, I still use it as my main browser, and find that in combination with PIE, then I can do pretty much everything I want on the web.
Cheers,
Steve.
are there any differences between the beta version and the retail version?

Here a post I wrote on moving cache of Opera on SD card...
http://www.planete-htc.com/index.php?mod=forum&ac=voir&cat=101&id=5514
Open opera.ini file, go to [User Prefs]. At the end of that paragraph, write that ligne
Cache Directory4=\Storage Card\x with x the folder you choosed for cache on your SD.
For french roms, Storage Card must be replaced by Carte de Stockage
Opera is not perfect, but is largely better than other mobile browers...
Thanks for the input. I'm not sure I will pay for the retail version at this point.
Re: the difference between beta version and latest retail version, I'm sure there are many and would depend on the beta version. Main one that comes to mind is that I understand the retail version has a tabbed browser interface while my old beta version does not.
I wonder if Opera mobile will ever support Java?
opera 8.5/8.6 does not support java & javascript?
what about vbscript?
Where do we copy the opera.dll
I am running a trial version. Have the cracked opera.dll file. Where do I copy this to in order to prevent the 30 days to run up?

Here's an idea: how about *paying* for it? I mean, it's only $24 or about 2% the RRP of an HTC Universal. Don't try to kid yourself that circumventing anti-piracy measures is anything other than stealing. If you use a cracked copy, you are a theif.
I agree I always buy software. I have 50+ apps on my IIs and all are paid for you, shouldn't try and steal money from hard working developers who are trying to make a living.
I am finding Opera 8.60 retail to be AWESOME!
In fact, I ditched the JasJar some months ago and have been using a JAM for some time. I only bought a new JJ cos of Opera on VGA. It's rendering most pages such as my online banking (which PIE cocked up completely), it zooms perfectly, and it's just amazing! If WM5 had come out with a decent broser on day one it would have driven operator ARPU's and internet usage. Now I have google with me wherever I go. I kind of had it on my JAM, but not really with that crappy low res screen.
This is a no brainer app and worth every cent!
Piracy
Nice thinking and have no objection. But if you got something for the first time you simply dont go about splashing money around. It is only fare that I want to make use of it, see & decide. If you check 8.6 is not the latest version it is an old version. By paying I would now be getting v9 (see I checked it and am planning to) but need to see if it is what I need / want.
Stereotyping aint really good. Peace anyway....
PS: Besides doing this kind of stuff is always the best way of learning the logic, structure of how a device works. And that is my main interest in these stuff. Not getting all for free. Thanks for your comments anyway...

I'm using Opera on the trial. 30 days is plenty of time to make your mind up. If you don't really use it enough to make up your mind in that time, then don't buy it. If you do, buy it. $24 really is next to nothing for a product. That wouldn't a decent sandwich, cake and a cup of tea!

They provide a trial for that purpose. If they didn't, I still wouldn't agree. Afterall, I can't try out a holiday before I buy it and if I don't like the terms, I can simple boycott the product.

I'd hardly call it stereotyping. Stereotyping is painting a group with a broad brush and, in doing so, encompassing more than rightfully fit the description. However, calling all pirates theives is not stereotyping as all piracy is theft.

I know I'm on a very high horse here, but I cannot and will not tolerate piracy. It *does* hurt people (developers, distributers, support staff, everyone in the chain and their families) and they only reason why it's not as widely regarded as wrong is because everyone knows they will more than likely get away with it. Steal Opera is no better than stealing a wallet or an item of jewellery or anything else. It's ALL theft.
I'm using an early beta that does not have the 30 day limit.
Am I stealing?
The reason I posted the question is because I am not averse to paying for a good finished product. It seems craigiecraig4 (if I have the name spelled right) would say that Opera 8.6 is a good finished product.
That is the type of opinion I was soliciting.
I think anyone who has a beta version of software on there device have in a way paid for it because they put there device on the line to test the product.

Unfortunately not and probably not for the foreseable future. Everyone is still waiting for NAND Android which appartantly was beleived that a fully working NAND ROM would be released near the end of September. Looks as tho its taking alot longer than they thought it would. However Android seem to be the main focus and not much is known about the development of WP7 on the HD2 apart from somebody has done it but it can't be released yet probably not much is working on it so just keep looking out every week or so as It won't be out anytime soon
why would you want it? it is inferior to WinMo 6.5 in most key areas
1. tethering (while it does support it, most of if not all of the harware is locked so the functionality is not exposed)
2. copy paste (yeah yeah we hear it's coming but it should have been there from the get go)
3. functionality as removable storage is not present nor is it supported by wp7 if you hack it to work (requires a hack on eacj host PC you connect the phone to)
4. UI customizing (WTF were they thinking?)
5. multi tasking for third party apps (they have appearantly reversed decisions on this)
6. BT functionality is limited.
No.

Firstly visit www.htc.com and make sure you're running the latest ROM.
Then install SPB Mobile Shell 3.5, it's available via the MS market place as a free trial.
Also install S2P, it's a great music player which you can direct to monitor specific folders rather than adding every mp3 on your phone. Also re-size or replace your album art to 480x480 as it can take advantage of this.
I've done the above and have a fast, efficient and most importantly, stable Leo.
You can give it a go for no more than what? 30 minutes of your life? Do it next time you're sat on the toilet.

fast stable OS? rally? reports are wp7 is slower at launching apps than it's predcessor....
just because you don't need it does not mean it is not a significant shortcoming
you have issues if you can't use copy and paste (you know something that has been a staple of windows since it's inception over 25 years ago)
no way to change the UI to your liking? YAY! I get the same crappy look as everyone else..
Multitasking is essential unless you love having those long delays in WP7 when launching apps over and over again because you are using an app and you get a ph call.... better hope your developer wrote that app correctly so it saves your state......

Seriously, forget any report or review you read. Play with it yourself. I was VERY skeptical about WP7 and was utterly overwhelmed by it when I had a go with a HD7 recently. Seriously, it really is the smoothest and fastest UI I've ever seen, and it all makes sense when you're actually using it and not just watching a video.

That's exactly the point... it's down to the developers to correctly code their apps to save state when required. That means Microsoft have put in place a way to handle multiple applications being used asynchronously.
I cant wait for WP7 to work properly on the HD2 because I really want to start playing the xbox live games on it. But I doubt itll be fast and stable lol, I imagine it will be quite slow and crappy. + very ugly

I've posted about it before, I wouldn't say I found it slow, more long winded.
Rather than opening the apps instantly it seemed to want to make a song and dance about everything when really I just wanted to get going.
The HTC hub and weather for instance takes it to the extreme (not recomended for people who suffer travel sickness!)
Ok it's not "go away and make a cuppa" time (or go away and read War and Peace like when a BB reboots), but I did find it frustrating. It may indeed be quicker than on the HD2, but it certainly didn't feel it.
I kept wanting to open task manager to see how many apps were running and slowing it down.

Yeah, I do agree that a lot goes on when you run something. There's always some transition or other taking place, and I can see that this would annoy some people instantly, and everyone else eventually. I didn't dig around looking for any customisation options for the UI, so I don't know if it can be tidied up in any way (like Android's animation options in display settings).
The HTC stuff was way more excessive than just regular apps though. Totally!

Think of it like xbox live on the 360 with the hacked firmwares. The chefs can do as much as they like to keep spoofing the phones so users will be able to use Zune, Windows Live, Xbox Live and other cloud services but either way Microsoft are not stupid and will keep putting a stop to it it will be short lived attempts. I would like WP7 on my HD2 myself but you have to be realistic MS have worked on a new OS and they will want to protect their new investment. IF WP7 is ported i'm pretty sure we wont have the online features for long and if anything WP7 on the HD2 will be more of a ZUNE player (offline). Don't compare the iPhone to the HD2 the iPhone is jailbroken to make use of the features it "has" this is a totally different kettle of fish porting an OS then expecting full features.
about the online cloud service, i think it is too early to say it can not be unlocked.
MS always do not want other people to crack the system. but, as you can see, windows 7 has been cracked perfectly.
just give developers more time to do their work. time will come

How is a desktop/Laptop/Netbook/Tablet operating system anything like an OS for a smartphone that is locked to hardware and tied with a private key to the software. I've not said they won't get it running no doubt they will get the OS to run but the key features probally not be something that will be avaliable (online).

Ok, but why?

Ok, so Ubuntu and now Debian can run on HD2. It's great, it's amazing but is it any use?
Why would you need a software designed for a pc to work on a device with less than 4 ro 5 times the screen size and with so less buttons?
I am by no means going against this, I am just thinking what use could this be.
No tomatoes please.
1. Make your phone cooler
2. You have a new "computer"
PC in a pocket. there are things that a full desktop environment can do, that a mobile one cannot. there are tools available to desktop PC's that haven't been ported to mobile ones for lack of necessity.
personally i do a lot of side job computer repair for friends and such, and it would be a lot nicer to have my phone double as a laptop, rather than carry around my actual laptop wherever i go. of course i dont always need my laptop when i do repairs, but sometimes i do for one reason or another.
so having a much more mobile and lightweight alternative to that is a very big bonus. and of course like the previous post.... it it pretty fun to show off ;-)
Uhh dude, why not? Why put a differnet rom on a phone, because its Great to do that and give ya a good feeling about it, even beter if you can make one.
Same here, its cool, its something else, its sweet.
ofcourse, doing things directly to the phone is way more trouble than having a laptop but you can leave some automatizations like 1click script to have your ssh or ftp server. or just place a test http site to show to your client on its own pc and you have it ready on the go. there are millions of posibilities. is up to you how far you can go.
Well, I can only really think of one application fire me. I work at subway and my boss wants us to take courses at subway university, which is online. But they aren't supported by my mobile browser, so having a quick ubuntu desktop on my phone would provide the advantage to study when I'm not at home. But other than that, ubuntu is just awesome!

You could run it as a Server. Strong processor, very little power consumption.
For example.
you forget one thing. you're not forced to put it on the device!
No one is forcing you to change to android or install WP7. yet you might go for them because they offer you more eye candy, applications, or just because you want to.
and that's what people here are doing. simply one more option for people who need a portable PC OS, for fun, or because they need it.

You don't make phone calls with a computer do you.
I think the most attracting part is to plug in some keyboard and mouse, fire up some commands through terminal over the mobile network -- A dream machine!!!
WHY!? Cause you can. why do some people have like 10 hauses, 50 cars, 5 boats... 2 planes. cause they can. thats why android, wm6.1, wm 6.5.x, mwp7,7.5, ubuntu... cause we can

How does one disable expiration of Windows 8 Consumer Preview?

Looks like Windows 8 expires next year on 1/15. Any way to disable that function so that it doesn't lock down my computer?
Why?
I any case, there'll be a public beta released in the next few months I'd say anyway.
moved to general - not development
I'm not sure you can. Also, it technically isn't deactivated, but rather nuetered. It doesn't get updates, force shut downs every 2 hours, you can't access free MS software, ect. Basically, it drives you mad until you go so insane you get forced into upgrading.

One does not disable that time bomb.....at least as far as XDA-Dev is concerned.
Moving along, nothing to see

no one said anything about software piracy. Also, one can only illegally use windows IF they use an illegal key. Disabling/enabling windows activation files for development / testing purposes, is not so long as they dont use any product key at all. Plus, there are built in commands to extend the activation period for a set amount of times and can be reset 3 times.

so the phrase "wait for the pirate to help you" obviously isnt hinting at piracy, right?

using a product outside of its original intended use, hacked or stolen, is still piracy, you are using something that you have not paid for, whether or not there are exploits to get around that is irrelevant. Dude, it costs next to nothing to buy it so just buy it an feel good that your supporting developers rather than trying to rip them off

Oh, "outside original intended use" is pretty much what hacking is all about. Mind you, that's usually a matter of adding functionality, not of bypassing license restrictions (which is exactly what the OP is asking for, and is, by all intents and purposes, piracy).
Just buy the damn OS for $40 US and use the release version instead of the buggy pre-release. I believe you can even install it over the existing pre-release and keep your files, if backing up is too much trouble. http://www.microsoftstore.com/store...dows_8_Pro?WT.mc_id=MSCOM_HP_nav_BuyWSoftware

my point exactly. I've now updated about half a dozen devices, its so stupidly cheap it would be madness not doing it, any vista era laptop is BETTER than new with it, the age old "excuses" for piracy just don't hold any water at this price point.

Well I never saw that part... Lol. However, I do make a valid point. Microsoft sells software, sure, but it's the keys they actually care about. I actually already disabled the activation utilities in windows 8 pro last night because it came up on a fresh install and crashed my computer. Another valid reason to remove it. I was in middle of watching something and the new activation came up in a metro ui windows and refused to close. Next thing I know, a BSOD came up with a video crash error. Since windows is so cheap, I do plan to buy the pro upgrade, just not right this minute.

while you plan to buy it, what your doing now is still piracy and still frowned apon. the easiest and most effective way to cure activation related crashes is to........actually activate it
Using the already included activation tools that are built in to windows to temporarily disable a buggy subsystem is not piracy. By right, I am given 30 days of free usage on any copy of windows when absent of a product key. I am part of the tech net and msdn and know all about windows, and all of its components, subsystems, and legalities. Trust me when I say that disabling activation during the first 30 days is not by any means even partially shady. Just. E wary after

everybody's on tech net huh!
kinda makes you wonder what your doing messing about with not activating it...
yes you have 30 days to eval it, but heres the thing, since you haven't paid for it, and you have access to technet, I assume that's where you got your copy of it? what I fail to understand then is why you haven't activated it with the key you generated from them...
unless you didn't get it from TechNet , you cant download it without buying it first, unless you got it through alternative channels, but then why would you when you have access to TechNet and not use it....
many questions...
Problem... solved? Maybe? Haha.

Well, I just simply do not have a premium subscription that would allow me access to said keys. I just get copies of things for free for evaluation only. i will be upgrading my TechNet license to premium before too long once i get some more money. The other reason is for testing. i know windows 8 is great, but i want to run a semi-long term test to make sure that windows can hold up to all that i need and do every day. Hence the 30 day evaluation. On average, my computers have about 280GB of nothing but just programs for development (website, source, etc...) and programs for places such as this for building ROMs, and that takes A LOT of space already.
So basically, i disabled the activation out of pure annoyance, and it doesn't need to be activated when merely evaluating the Install. Second, if that is what happens every time it comes up, then i will definitely figure out a way to keep using the older Consumer Preview that just expired on monday, or settle for windows 7 again. Man I had EVERYTHING set up on it. Good for computer repair, ROM building, building custom Windows OS copies for licensed redistribution, etc... You name it, i had it... lol.

This survey is conducted by Honor India. However General feedback about EMUI and its comparison with the other OS features are welcome. Unless its regional specific feature, you can update in this form.

One other thing. If you want to keep my business you better do a much better job supplying an official method of unlocking the boot loader.
The hoops I had to jump through to get the bootloader unlocked were ridiculous. I WILL NOT buy another one of your phones if I cannot easily unlock the bootloder.
I like your phones but wont go through that again.
An easily unlockable bootloader is a must, and I also think EMUI should not try to copy iOS too much, but rather stick closer to AOSP's look and feel.
You're right, huawei makes some great hardware in contrast to software. I was going to get a pixel, but now I am confused if it's worth it since the price is way higher than I expected. I think I'll get a 6p

you may want to look into an HTC 10
I'm still perfectly happy with the Samsung Note 5 I got last spring, but If I had to get another phone today it would probably be the 10 because of the unlock able bootloader and great community support the phone has. The 6p is pretty much already abandon be Google

Include a file manager that connects to the various cloud services. This was not a problem in the past but now all decent file managers are infested by over-the-top ads. I had to uninstall both ES File Explorer and File Commander. They are literally like a virus now.

Solid Explorer is the best I've came across in terms of ease of navigation, nice interface and great utilities. I still haven't expired my trial period -2 weeks- so I hope I won't be flooded with ads, but it's worth it imo. No ads as of yet.

They have the right to earn money through apps, but they exaggerated in Ads
I think you people are getting off topic. An ad free file manager is not something that should be included by Honor. You people are some cheap basterds. Spend a few bucks if its that important to you.

Idiotic post, really. So what pre-installed apps are not for "cheap basterds"? Is the email app ok? Music player ok? Because all these can be bought for a few bucks.
What would be the difference between pre-installing these apps and pre-installing a decent file manager?
