Ok, but why? - HD2 Ubuntu Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and General

Ok, so Ubuntu and now Debian can run on HD2. It's great, it's amazing but is it any use?
Why would you need a software designed for a pc to work on a device with less than 4 ro 5 times the screen size and with so less buttons?
I am by no means going against this, I am just thinking what use could this be.
No tomatoes please.

1. Make your phone cooler
2. You have a new "computer"

PC in a pocket. there are things that a full desktop environment can do, that a mobile one cannot. there are tools available to desktop PC's that haven't been ported to mobile ones for lack of necessity.
personally i do a lot of side job computer repair for friends and such, and it would be a lot nicer to have my phone double as a laptop, rather than carry around my actual laptop wherever i go. of course i dont always need my laptop when i do repairs, but sometimes i do for one reason or another.
so having a much more mobile and lightweight alternative to that is a very big bonus. and of course like the previous post.... it it pretty fun to show off ;-)

Uhh dude, why not? Why put a differnet rom on a phone, because its Great to do that and give ya a good feeling about it, even beter if you can make one.
Same here, its cool, its something else, its sweet.

ofcourse, doing things directly to the phone is way more trouble than having a laptop but you can leave some automatizations like 1click script to have your ssh or ftp server. or just place a test http site to show to your client on its own pc and you have it ready on the go. there are millions of posibilities. is up to you how far you can go.

Well, I can only really think of one application fire me. I work at subway and my boss wants us to take courses at subway university, which is online. But they aren't supported by my mobile browser, so having a quick ubuntu desktop on my phone would provide the advantage to study when I'm not at home. But other than that, ubuntu is just awesome!

It's more advanced in many aspects, though it could be annoying sometimes

Ok, but why?
Because we can

Because HD2 is King.....
And a King can have any number of queens....

If you have to ask this question ("why"), then u really don't get xda-developer
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA Premium App

You could run it as a Server. Strong processor, very little power consumption.
For example.

you forget one thing. you're not forced to put it on the device!
No one is forcing you to change to android or install WP7. yet you might go for them because they offer you more eye candy, applications, or just because you want to.
and that's what people here are doing. simply one more option for people who need a portable PC OS, for fun, or because they need it.

I like ubuntu on my home computer, but its a little awkward on my hd2... still, its so awesome to be able to do so many things with the hd2!!!

You can use it as a server, very very very low consumption. It did the trick for me (mail + web, very light, very fast!)

You don't make phone calls with a computer do you.
I think the most attracting part is to plug in some keyboard and mouse, fire up some commands through terminal over the mobile network -- A dream machine!!!

WHY!? Cause you can. why do some people have like 10 hauses, 50 cars, 5 boats... 2 planes. cause they can. thats why android, wm6.1, wm 6.5.x, mwp7,7.5, ubuntu... cause we can

just got a vibrant....oh my where to start! :)

Got a Vibrant yesterday to "try out" the android world for the first time. Must say I'm impressed by the phones performance out of the box even with all the bloatware and crap on it. I've been a windows mobile guy for quite some time now, so the people that know both platforms well, know they are two completely different monsters. My two options were the hd2 (since i know the WM world pretty well) or learn a whole new platform with the vibrant.
I like it so far, but also miss some of the things from WM (or rather miss knowing my phone well). I guess i just have to start from zero and get acquainted with it first.
Any suggestions on getting the bare down scoop of the platform and such as far as learning it from the ground up? The sticky explains how to do these things, but I need something more basic...I just wanna become proficient in the android world as I am in the WM world starting from zero.
Its hard to say where to start, the best thing about android is the customization. Playing with phone is the only way you are gonna learn, I have been an android owner since day one and am still learning new things everyday. If there is something I don't know I simply come here since this is the best android community on the web. Hope you enjoy IMO the best android phone on the market.

Yeah, really not that much to help with...everything seems pretty intuitive to me. When in doubt, long press or press menu.
My first questions were always like:
Sweet I have Avatar on here, what else Can I put on?
Oh damn, there's only a 2GB Card, and if I remove it, I lose Avatar.
WTF is amazon kindle for? I don't need this? How can I remove Bloats?
That's where I started off, you're most likely going to want to root it. Search the forums around. There's some great stickies to follow by and just go with that.

I didn't have those questions. I mean the first thing i did was move avatar to my 16gb msdhc into it and go wild with my music, photo, and videos...which I'm amazed how good of sound/video quality i get on this.
I thought more of like where do how do I view flash websites, how do i stream live .pls live music streams, or smaller things like hiding apps from the notification area at the top left when they are running, or resizing certain widgets, removing some of the applications that came with the phone from t mobile, mapping buttons to do different things based on holding them down or tapping a certain amount of times, things like that that aren't explained in the user manual. Or even like right now, I'm trying to make a call and it says: "Call not sent"...well? whyyyyyyyyy? so many questions!
I don't know, I guess all this is just part of the familiarization process and will sooner or later find them out whether by experience or hunting down resources why certain behaviors and actions happen.

haha that seems to be a problem with any gps enabled phone nowadays. Happened with the fuze and after months and months of tweaking and tweaking we got a hang of it. I tried the GPS yesterday on my way home from work yesterday and did not get a lock, i went ahead and downloaded gps test today to see if that will unlock it before using the gps software. We shall see! Thanks for the heads up tho!
edit: I guess gps test on android works differently than on WM. On WM it scans through your COM ports and gets a fix for you to then use your gps navigation software.

Yeah thats what ive been doing. Thats another thing that amazes me about android, soooo many apps, and they are all centralized into one easy, convenient location. In wm you would find a few in the marketplace, and the rest u had to hunt down either on the forum or the web. This is slowly growing on me
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Coming from WM myself, (and just recently and very reticently turned over my beloved Wizard to my mom) the fun and unfun I have with Android:
Apps are so dratted cheap. Have at it.
Cloud connectivity. I use Picasa all the time now. It took me a while to get used to Google contacts, especially first name alphabetization, but I like it now.
You might want to look at subscribing to CompanionLink. It reliably syncs everything Outlook with your Google account (thus your phone).
Almost nothing was built into Android 1.0. Not much was added through 1.5. Some stuff has been added since, like Facebook sync, but custom ROMs don't add stuff. There's an app for everything. There has to be.
The app drawer is a hassle. I use FolderOrganizer (and ADW Launcher) to quell my addiction to organization beyond alphabetical.
It's fun to watch a few things catch up with WinMo and hear all the Android users brag about how great it is. Like app-specific auto-rotation. There's an app for it out now, but it actually costs something you'll think about, and it eats a hunk of RAM. They're just getting into animated GIFs. Lists and their apps aren't anywhere near ListPro, but they almost all have some way to sync to the cloud.
Office documents created on a PC don't always work with the Office apps that are out there. Don't bother with DocumentsToGo, but Sheadspreet is good (you have to convert first) and I'm trying OfficeSuite, and it seems the best. 30-day trial, $15. It's still not WinMo, though.
For those things you don't sync with the cloud, you can't just throw stuff in your My Documents Folder and rely on that backup. DropBox is a good app/service, and GoogleDocs is your friend. Most apps back up thier specific data to your SD, but on this phone, it's on the internal SD. You have to manually handle your backups, or do Nandroid backups (another worthwhile Google).
You have to install an app to install apps not from Market. Instead of exes their apks.
There's no Total Commander. I like Root Explorer. Astro is feature-filled. There are a million file explorers, and every one of them will have its advocates.
Flashing ROMs is tons easier, but you have to root first.
The Android world moves a lot faster. If you're off the forums for a week you'll feel like you've been in a coma for months. On the flip side, if you're waiting for something to get developed, waiting a few days feel like eternity.
Android devs work harder for a lot less, or no money; it's truly inspiring.
Before you go buying the first app that does what you want, check Market for more that do the same thing. I've found that there's a free alternative to almost everything. The paid versions/apps are more luxurious in one way or another, usually, but a little research can save you a bunch of regret.
Widgets suck RAM. Before you know it you've got 25 and you're wondering why your Home screen is lagging. Phones are finite. Even these.
CM is CyanogenMod. Google it, it's worth it. They started on XDA and it got out of control, so they have their own site now, although the threads still hanging on XDA re CM are a much more interesting read. It seems to be the most popular set of ROMS for a variety of devices. I follow and flash them (the ROMs, that is. I dont want the devs to hate me).
Double entendres are rampant. It's Google.
Once you get your apps organized, you'll be surprised at how smoothly your phone useage goes. Frankly, it's just more fun, and much cheaper, to play with.

Unfortunately not and probably not for the foreseable future. Everyone is still waiting for NAND Android which appartantly was beleived that a fully working NAND ROM would be released near the end of September. Looks as tho its taking alot longer than they thought it would. However Android seem to be the main focus and not much is known about the development of WP7 on the HD2 apart from somebody has done it but it can't be released yet probably not much is working on it so just keep looking out every week or so as It won't be out anytime soon
why would you want it? it is inferior to WinMo 6.5 in most key areas
1. tethering (while it does support it, most of if not all of the harware is locked so the functionality is not exposed)
2. copy paste (yeah yeah we hear it's coming but it should have been there from the get go)
3. functionality as removable storage is not present nor is it supported by wp7 if you hack it to work (requires a hack on eacj host PC you connect the phone to)
4. UI customizing (WTF were they thinking?)
5. multi tasking for third party apps (they have appearantly reversed decisions on this)
6. BT functionality is limited.

Firstly visit www.htc.com and make sure you're running the latest ROM.
Then install SPB Mobile Shell 3.5, it's available via the MS market place as a free trial.
Also install S2P, it's a great music player which you can direct to monitor specific folders rather than adding every mp3 on your phone. Also re-size or replace your album art to 480x480 as it can take advantage of this.
I've done the above and have a fast, efficient and most importantly, stable Leo.
You can give it a go for no more than what? 30 minutes of your life? Do it next time you're sat on the toilet.

fast stable OS? rally? reports are wp7 is slower at launching apps than it's predcessor....
just because you don't need it does not mean it is not a significant shortcoming
you have issues if you can't use copy and paste (you know something that has been a staple of windows since it's inception over 25 years ago)
no way to change the UI to your liking? YAY! I get the same crappy look as everyone else..
Multitasking is essential unless you love having those long delays in WP7 when launching apps over and over again because you are using an app and you get a ph call.... better hope your developer wrote that app correctly so it saves your state......

Seriously, forget any report or review you read. Play with it yourself. I was VERY skeptical about WP7 and was utterly overwhelmed by it when I had a go with a HD7 recently. Seriously, it really is the smoothest and fastest UI I've ever seen, and it all makes sense when you're actually using it and not just watching a video.

That's exactly the point... it's down to the developers to correctly code their apps to save state when required. That means Microsoft have put in place a way to handle multiple applications being used asynchronously.

I've posted about it before, I wouldn't say I found it slow, more long winded.
Rather than opening the apps instantly it seemed to want to make a song and dance about everything when really I just wanted to get going.
The HTC hub and weather for instance takes it to the extreme (not recomended for people who suffer travel sickness!)
Ok it's not "go away and make a cuppa" time (or go away and read War and Peace like when a BB reboots), but I did find it frustrating. It may indeed be quicker than on the HD2, but it certainly didn't feel it.
I kept wanting to open task manager to see how many apps were running and slowing it down.

Yeah, I do agree that a lot goes on when you run something. There's always some transition or other taking place, and I can see that this would annoy some people instantly, and everyone else eventually. I didn't dig around looking for any customisation options for the UI, so I don't know if it can be tidied up in any way (like Android's animation options in display settings).
The HTC stuff was way more excessive than just regular apps though. Totally!

Think of it like xbox live on the 360 with the hacked firmwares. The chefs can do as much as they like to keep spoofing the phones so users will be able to use Zune, Windows Live, Xbox Live and other cloud services but either way Microsoft are not stupid and will keep putting a stop to it it will be short lived attempts. I would like WP7 on my HD2 myself but you have to be realistic MS have worked on a new OS and they will want to protect their new investment. IF WP7 is ported i'm pretty sure we wont have the online features for long and if anything WP7 on the HD2 will be more of a ZUNE player (offline). Don't compare the iPhone to the HD2 the iPhone is jailbroken to make use of the features it "has" this is a totally different kettle of fish porting an OS then expecting full features.
about the online cloud service, i think it is too early to say it can not be unlocked.
MS always do not want other people to crack the system. but, as you can see, windows 7 has been cracked perfectly.
just give developers more time to do their work. time will come

Awesome, I think google needs to focus on this as far as the placing your phone on the tablet and able to do this and that and more stores need to have that tech also so it will me super easy to do things.
I'm not going to say anything about what I've seen as I'm not sure whether or not it's confidential, but you can at least check out the trademark, as that's public.

I can't promise that this will ever actually materialize, but it sounds good.
I'm sure nfc will be used for this kind of thing once it's ubiquitous..

Ya NFC chips are starting to become more and more popular and the new WebOS tablet and phones can do something like that where you set your Palm Pre (I guess it would now be the HP Pre) on the WebOS tablet and it can transfer stuff, so far I've only seen it transfer URLs, but I'm sure the technology will catch on and later be used for other things. Just a matter of time.

Just bought an Atrix.

This is my first Android phone. I've previously owned the iPhone and a BlackBerry. I've sense ditched both for this Atrix. It's about a week old now.
I was heavy into jailbreaking my iPhone and modding it to how I wanted it to be, but this Android stuff is confusing the hell out of me. I just don't get it. I need the most remedial breakdown anyone can give me. I've been searching the web for days in and out trying to find something.
People have some really great information, though! That's how I came across this site. I hope to find more answers, although my mind almost exploded when I read through this thread.
Anyway, how do you like your Atrix? Any tips on making this device my own? I still feel like I should be back with an iPhone for whatever reason. LOL. It feels I'm too late to step into the Android world. I should have jumped on with the G1.
Oh, and any remedial breakdowns of rooting is welcomed! LOL!
Check out the ginger break thread for a nice break down. (really easy)
Enable swype (long press text entry)
Inquire about freezing some of the bloat with titanium backup
Start exploring the market
Download some emulators and play classic video games from the ol childhood
podcasts if your into that thing
Flash! Go to browser settings and change plug ins to (on demand) for quicker browsing and flash at your disposal!
Wait until you get uncapped upload speeds.. Oh man are you gonna love this phone!

First you are going to need sbfs and rsdlite in case something goes wrong.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=991072
Then you will need android sdk. Installing this takes awhile btw.
http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
you might also want to learn some basic adb and busybox commands.
http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/tools/adb.html
then you can root your phone with that thread you posted. If I think of anything else, I will post more.

I'm still not getting this stuff. Too many acronyms, too many... other things. I don't think it's meant for me to root this phone. LOL. I need a YouTube video or something. I have no idea what these instructions mean when they're telling to extract certain things in certain places, open certain things, install apk sbf and abc. Exaggerating, of course.
It's been over 7 hours and I haven't gotten any clarity.
Moved from iphone 3gs to my first android (Atrix) also.
I gotta tell you modding jailbroken iphones is very easy and very limited compared to Android phones. Even a stock outta-the-box android phone.
It's probably something like "want even more customizations = more work" for you with an Android.
Gold luck.
Its ok, its a lot to learn all at once. Just keep reading and asking questions and you'll get a grasp real soon. android is really educational and it took me a nexus one to figure it out.
Search for ginger break thats the easiest way so far I think. (sd card mandatory btw)

I'd be interested in a non AT&T branded ROM with app side loading etc. I'd guess that 2.3 will be the next big step though and wouldn't want to exclude myself from being able to upgrade...

Man, I've noticed that! I thought I knew a hell of a lot when it came to this stuff, but this Android rooting has made me realize that I'm somewhat of a novice. It's never taken me this long to grasp some computer stuff.
I also think it's because I bought my Atrix at full retail price and I don't have insurance. (I have a dealer line with AT&T. They made me provide my own phone.) I don't want to waste that much money if I brick my phone.

I'm going to keep reading and reading because I was referred to gingerbreak before I registered here. That's actually how I got on this site. It seems solid, I just have to figure it out. Reading up on terminology has made it clear to me what an ADB is. I just don't know how to use it.
Question: When I open this ADB file in the SuperOneClick zip, it opens a command prompt, displays some words and junk, an then disappears.
What am I supposed to do with this?
(I'm currently browsing this thead. I just don't have enough posts to post there.)

That is why I like using the adb from android sdk. Never liked doing it from oneclick even when I had a captivate. If you have android sdk, you can open a command prompt and cd to adb's folder and use the commands there. You can also make a bat file to make it easier.
If you don't know how to make a bat file, use notepad and type this
@echo off
cmd /k "cd c:\program files\android\android-sdk\platform-tools"
and save it as .bat
Note if you have 64 bit windows, it will be program files (x86)

Yeah, the learning curve is a little steep. Especially if you have never worked with linux before. This helped me a lot with my first android phone. This is for the n1, but most of the info applies to all android phones.

Not correct.
Unless you already have sideloading enabled, you will need to connect the phone to a computer.
BTW, return it while you can.
I got my Atrix and the first night I spent like 3 hours installing gingerblur and a ton of apps. It was GREAT. First android phone. I can't wait for 2.3.

The Xbox Music app for Windows 8 is built using the WinRT runtime, which is not available on Windows 7. To my knowledge this is not possible, also with an app like Xbox Music, I think hacking around that would be a bad idea for various reasons. Furthermore, the entire app 'experience' (full screen, metro driven environment) is not even remotely supported in Windows 7, so assuming you could 'trick' the WinRT backend onto Windows 7, the OS and App are not going to get along well at all, let alone if all of this was done somehow, I peg the chances of buying/streaming/etc actually working as close to 0.
I have Windows 8 Pro, custom build, nothing special though and even with this I can't stream or purchase song's on my Windows 8 Xbox Music app, despite hours of troubleshooting, there is quite a bit going on in the background for apps like Xbox Music.
Apologies, if that was more information than you wanted, anyhow that's my take on this. Hope it helps.
Why would you *want* to, though? Xbox Music is a crap app compared to what it "replaces", the Zune app. Zune runs great on Win7 (and also runs on Win8, in desktop mode) and is still available for download from http://zune.net. Xbox Music Pass and Zune Pass are the same thing; I can still stream and download my music using either app... but where Xbox Music is likely to tell me that for some reason it can't play the track, or to stutter or lag when picking or switching songs, Zune is capable of such crazy and advanced features as playing a Smart DJ list based on a specific song, rather than just based on an artist, and you can mark songs as "disliked" to avoid them playing again.
MS seriously screwed the pooch with their Xbox Music app on the PC... and for Windows RT, you can't even go back to Zune! Possibly my biggest disappointment in the new OS.
i just need it, you can't understand, many of us need it, if you dont like it, others will do.
It could be emulated.
I'm just confused what feature of the new app you're looking for. For *everything* that I've found except usability with a touchscreen, Zune is better. If you have a touchscreen, you should definitely be running Win8 anyhow. Let me know what you're looking for and I'll help you if I can, but I'm not going to put effort into supporting an inferior app on an older platform for the sake of "i just need it, you can't understand"!

ok i didnt wanted to say there but there is a song of a good friend, JUST BECAUSE of THAT ! Only There
simple as hell, i cant and i dont want to get windows 8 (other reasons and dont ask for them too)
i know its a simple job porting that app for a good developer as you all are in here (many)
i know Zune is better but i dont know why microsoft is cutting the limit of windows 7
i can also pay if you can emulate or port or extract that app so that its working on windows 7, you dont have to reply if you dont know how to do it or annoy me asking why i want it (as now you know it but still trynna continue )
sorry but true story

It's a javascript/HTML app. Porting is possible, but difficult, and I don't believe anyone actually cares enough to do it. If it's that important to you, do it yourself, or convince someone you know to do it. Also note that it will be illegal.

finally a better answer
hacking anything without premission is illegal, so thats not a problem, but no one cares, as the internet exists
and as i said, i would pay, so if someone can do that simple job of a pro developer, you can contact me.
i bet someday some one will do this, i just want to boost this ! ;D
PS : i know more than the basics of Javascript and HTML, but it isnt enough, maybe i give a try, but anyway, i dont have windows 8, so could anyone extract it and upload it so devs can start deving ! ? !

It's better to send your enthusiasm to another direction. Looks like you can't even imagine how is it difficult.
Though mb after hundreds of years you'll achieve something.
Meh. A lot of the stuff that goes on XDA-Devs is illegal somewhere, often right here in the USA. So long as it doesn't really piss off the big companies or the government (and I mean *really* piss off, not "meh, they aren't worth the effort" grade of annoyance) though, it's usually fine. Keep it justifiably clean. For example, porting a free app from one OS to another - even without the developer's permission - seems perfectly reasonable, especially if you leave any in-app advertising intact.
I still don't understand why this is desired, though. The OP doesn't quite seem to understand that people are trying to help solve his or her problem. There's no need to get defensive. When I ask "why", it's not "you're an idiot for wanting this"; it's "this is hard and there's probably a better way to do whatever you're trying to do". So... there's a song. It's on the Xbox Music marketplace but not the Zune marketplace? That's weird, since so far as I've seen thus far they are completely identical right down to the top downloaded songs lists at any given time (meaning MS doesn't distinguish between them on the server side). Please actually explain what the problem is, if you want people to help you.
Frankly, I expect most of us see the Xbox Music app as crap and/or Win7 as legacy and boring. There are plenty of challenges in the new OS that are much more interesting; flattering our skills and offering the appeal of a challenge only works when people are looking for something to do. Personally, I would *much* rather spend my time trying to get Pidgin running on Windows RT (to replace the broken built-in messenger) than try to get the awful Xbox Music app running on an OS that I'm using less and less... and it's a more interesting challenge, too.
Oh, one more thing that people seem to forget a lot (especially the newcomers): XDA-Devs is a *developer* forum. It is not a "make my phone|tablet|PC|whatever really cool!" forum. Nor is it a feature request forum, a tech support forum, a ranting-and-raving forum, or a piracy forum. In fact, requesting most of those is against the forum rules to one degree or another. If you're posting a new thread in dev&hacking, you should be offering something you developed, a hack you found, or something else of that nature.
I'd like to point out that not all hacking is illegal.
If you do t know how to do it and know one seems enthused about, it seems you're SOL

It's not run of the mill JS and HTML, that part would be easy. The hard part is that that JS and HTML requires custom libraries that aren't present in Windows 7, and backporting them would be damn near impossible.

you keep saying that we won't understand, just tell us rather than being all cryptic. Name the one reason that you need the xbox music app cause as GoodDayToDie said, the content is identical (I just checked myself) the only difference being that zune is much more useful.
EDIT: Would I be wrong in saying it is because you want the 30 day trial from xbox music rather than the 14 day trial you get in zune?
I already SAID the reason DUDE, just read the text, BUT you still dont do and continue annoyin ****
you all talkin ****, im searching professional devs, which could get paid if they want to, you all are noobs (except GoodDay2Die, who never said its hard, just asked for reason, that i answered and maybe its not his area)
i dont think that back porting libraries are that hard though, and still don't believe that Xbox Music is just HTML, JS, as Zune is in native code and Xbox Music is upgraded stuff of that. JS is impossible in here, unlogic pure. Net, silverlight, any thing is in there, and again i dont have this, i just saw some images, and no one confirmed or extracted that.
Still talking **** ?!

It's not happening, you obviously don't have the skill, and any serious dev is just going to laugh at you. It would be an insane amount of work to do this, and I doubt that you have the budget to do it. Use the Zune app, upgrade to Windows 8, or go without. You obviously don't understand WinRT, and now you're just being an ass. The devs here do things on a voluntary basis and no one is going to help you when you're rude, and seemingly don't understand the vastness of what you're asking at all.
