How To ROOT The Huawei Mate 8
1, Download the SuperSU
2, Connect the Huawei Mate 8 smartphone to the same computer where you have downloaded the SuperSU file.
3, Transfer the SuperSU (copy and paste it) to the internal storage SD card on your smartphone. if you don’t have any room on the SD card you’ll need to delete data, make room and try again.
4, Unplug the Huawei Mate 8 from the computer and completely power down the smartphomne.
5, Reboot the Huawei Mate 8 into the custom recovery mode by pressing the key combination. Press Volume Up and the Power button together to enter the custom recovery mode.
6, Navigate to the ‘Install’ option from the main custom recovery menu.
7, Browse the SD card for the SuperSU file.
8, Confirm you want to install the SuperSU file and wait while your devices flashes that file.
9, Once the flashing is done, your device is rooted! Now you just need to go back to the main custom recovery menu by navigating back where you can from and choose to reboot the system. You’ll see the ‘reboot system’ option from the menu.
Once your Huawei Mate 8 reboots, you should have the root access you needed for installing those root-only apps from the Google Play Store.

Hi. Thanks for starting this thread. This looks like a real nice phone. I'm currently using the Note Edge and was thinking of changing phones in January. Just a couple quick questions that anyone can chime in on. As I never have used a phone where the home button is on the screen, was wondering if this feature recedes when using an app? Otherwise, it would seem to me that the effective screen size is smaller. If I measured the screen size on Note Edge such that it included the area where the hardware buttons are for home and so forth then my screen would be closer to 5.7" to 5.8" (Not 5.5 as specified by manufacturer). Does anyone have an idea how the international version will be different from the current advertised one (unlocked and no bloatware?). From the specs, looks like it has bands 2 and 4, which is used for LTE in US. Is that available on the version that is currently advertised? Also, just wondering, have folks that have used other Huawei products, say the Mate 7, had much luck with using xposed modules? Finally, how consistent is the selected language. For example, if I choose English, do Chinese characters still occasionally pop up when trying features. Thanks!

I have a Mate 7 which was a local purchase in Australia, so I assume is just an international version. The EmotionUI does cause issues with Xposed but I'm running a slightly older version and have functionality enough for what I need. Most of the bloatware is actually from Google. The Huawei software is at least useful and they used a subtle approach with their modifications compared with Touchwiz. The Huawei launcher is not too great as they meant it to seem simple for iPhone users coming across to Android, but you can install other launchers and go to app settings and choose which is to be default. Huawei have a modded navbar which you can set to open the notification panel and also an optional navbar button for hiding the navbar which you can pull back up again. It works well. I don't get any chinese characters messing things up.
I think the Mate 8 will be a nice phone. The Mate 7 is nice, but Mate 8 is clearly an upgrade.

Hi. Thanks for your comments! Can you say more about the navbar button for hiding the navibar (maybe screenshot?). Is this something that is on the screen or is it in settings? Which modules worked for you on Xposed? Have you tried app settings or swipeback for example? Looking at the Mate 7 threads, it does not seem like there is not much development of roms. Am I mistaken here? Anyways, I agree with you. Looks like the Mate 8 is a nice phone. I've been happy with the Note Edge. I actually use a Note 4 port on it so I do not have the Edge side features. Instead you have the entire width of the screen to work with. As it turns out the width of Note Edge screen is about the same as the Mate 7. But it is about 1 cm shorter then the typical 6" screen. I've gotten so used to the wider screen I don't want to go down to a narrower phone. So I'm interested in some of the new crop of 6" phones. Also curious to see how the camera performs on Mate 8. If it is a downgrade from what I currently have on the Note Edge it would be a no go for me.

In options with EMUI you can set that you can hide the navbar with a button the left then swipe up gesture to make it go up again it works excellent with mate 7 so I expect it will work just the same with Mate 8.

I'd like a Mate 8 as my next phone, or a Mate 9, lol. I think this Mate 7 will do me 2 years.
Unfortunately there is almost no Mate 7 ROM support but I don't mind to be honest. The phone works. Once rooted you can make your own changes. I kept KitKat rather than do the buggy Lollipop update and will wait and see how Marshmalllow comes up, if they do release it.
I think they will because they are trying to develop their global image and I expect starting to understand how this impacts buyers globally. They've pulled their heads out of their ar*e and know the world is much bigger than just China.
If they ever release source code, maybe things will explode for them. Devs would get right onboard pretty fast as the hardware is good.
With regard to Xposed, as I say, still on KitKat on the M7. It's EMUI that plays havoc with modules as the theming doesn't mix with resource hooks. This means you have a hard time using modules that change appearance. Anything that tries to mod navbar, statusbar or other UI elements is no good. Some things will work. Some experimentation is needed. All I have in Xposed right now are ActivityForceNewTask, Master Key multi-fix, MinMinGuard, VolumeSteps+ and Wanam Kit.
I'm trying to minimise how much Xposed modding is in effect.
I run Kinscreen and Leandroid for a better experience with screen on time whilst keeping power draw minimal with screen off and have de-bloated a lot of Google stuff. For the launcher, I use Smart Launcher Pro as it rotates, re-organises and scales to landscape for use in the car.
With audio, I installed Viper4Android and use Poweramp. I still have DTS turned on in the system settings but any processing in Poweramp is off. Sounds fantastic!
Here's a screen shot of my Battery stats.
To the right is a navbar shortcut to open the notification panel so it's possible one handed.
To the left is the button to hide navbar. Simply edgeswipe up and it re-appears.
The options are set in settings but once done, it's always there.
It's clear this big battery is nice

Thanks! Fantastic battery life! Screen shot really helped. Now I understand how navibar can be hidden and notification shortcut. Nice. Picture is worth a thousand words! Speaking of picture, hope camera is good! In regards to Xposed, especially like the module app settings because it let me set up the google mail app so it had more of a tablet look and also help me optimize how space is used on certain app like dolphin browser. For me this is important for phones with large screens.

For email, google mail is the first thing I get rid of. I like Aquamail Pro. Every type of account supported including exchange and a lot of settings to tailor it to individual taste.
Once rooted, I remove gmail and stock email apps but keep the exchange app.

I've not long got my Mate 7 so won't be looking to upgrade at least for a year. Maybe at end of Mate 8 production as they start getting rid of them cheap to make way for Mate 9.
If I hadn't got the 7 I possibly would have waited longer and gone for the 8, but I don't regret the 7 anyway. It's a good device for $500AU
I saw a new black Xperia Z today for $199AU and almost bought it for my wife. Also saw another Mate 7 32Gb at $489AU. Somebody will get a bargain!

PhoneArena's video review:
My quick 2-cents on this device thus far....
Pros:
- Build quality is ecstatic for such a low price. Very sturdy and no creaks.
- The screen is absolutely gorgeous. I've been using a G2 and I've enjoyed it's IPS display, but I think this Idol 3's trumps it. It's brighter and colors seem to pop out more. Can't rave enough about the screen.
- The external speakers are absolutely loud and crisp. I honestly think it's really close to the quality the HTC M series have... If the M9's speakers are a 10/10, I'd have to give the Idol 3's an 8/10. They're that good.
- Speed wise, things seem fast. I don't game much on my phone, and if I do it's those simple mobile games, but everyday tasks will fare just fine on this device.
- Love the almost stock Android feel!
Cons:
- While I love the build quality, the back plate has a very cheap feel/look to it. Though it's not really a complaint since I expected it. Granted, I'm not really the type to care about build materials but I know it matters to a lot of people. As long as the phone is sturdy, I'm happy. (My dream would be if dbrand made skins for this phone)
- Not a fan of the Alcatel Launcher or it's icon pack. (Nova FTW)
- Camera is so-so. Seems to be on par with my G2's camera, which isn't bad by any means, just not the best.... but then again, for the $199 that I paid for it, how can this be a con... right?
- For the life of me I can't get the double tap to wake feature to work... Does anyone know if it's something I have to enable in settings? I've tried to look and can't find anything. Thanks
- Can't think of any other con at the moment... I'll edit this if I find more.
So far this device is an absolute steal at at $199! What have you guys thought so far?
Double tap to wake, go to settings and it's the first setting under "device" enable slider to double to wake.
Double Tap
I have Nova Launcher installed and double tap does not work. Double tap does however work on the stock Alcatel skin. In the Nova Launcher settings you have to pay for the premium to get the double tap feature.

I've got nova prime running with double tap to wake and sleep working. You could always pin a "screen off/sleep" app to your home and tap it to sleep.

How do you apply double tap to wake and sleep via Nova? I don't see it in the Gesture settings within the app.

Assuming you have the paid version, nova prime. Download "screen off and lock" app from play store first. After installed, nova settings, gestures, assign screen off app to double tap gesture. Alternately, just double tap empty portion of screen while running nova as home and you will be prompted to allow screen off app to assume that gesture. Let me know if you get it, good luck!

Perfect. Thanks man! Works great.
So far I'll mirror mackster's review, spot on! Nice phone and quick with great screen. I crushed it while installing my apps but it didn't get hot, just a little warm, which impressed me.
I'm worried about the camera. I took about 8 shots and so far not so good. Let me play with it for a couple days and I'll get back to you. I too was using a G2 the last few weeks after selling my G3. G2 camera has ois and was pretty decent. Idol 3 reminds me of nexus 5 cam, decent but only under ideal light, which is what all the pre release reviews said. G2 seems to get a sharper image in good light.
This really looks, feels, and behaves like a $600 phone from late 2013/early 2014 IMHO. I paid $199 and I'm worried about scratching or dropping it, then have to remind myself it cost a third of a flagship phone and I'm going to use and abuse it without all the anxiety that comes with a huge price tag. Probably slap a glass screen protector on it and a skin if available but that's it!

Same here! I planned on not using a case on this thing... but it's so damn thin that I may have to lol. It's just hard to hold due to how thin it is. I asked dbrand if they would make skins for this phone, and their reply was "maybe". So I'm holding out for dear hope that they are. Yeah, camera does seem a little bad. And you're right about the G2's camera in great lighting conditions, it really is well above average in that aspect.
As much as I love this phone (so far), Alcatel really blew it with the name lol. I hate the "idol" name and that font at the back of the phone. If dbrand makes skins for this, I'll be fully happy.

Same here as well.No major issues using apps. Installed and used phone for awhile didn't get hot at all. Only performance issue I saw was closing many recent apps from recent app screen. Screen is nice and very bright. Blindingly bright. The speakers a loud and sound good. Also the sound out of the audio jack is very loud too which I'm happy about. I tried to use the stock launcher but I missed some features from Nova so I had to install Nova Prime. That's not a knock against Alcatel tho. Today I'm happy with it. We'll have to play around with it for awhile.
Guys, I'm struggling with this camera! Just did a series of comparison photos with my G2, one M8, and the idol 3. Indoor shots of my son with overcast light coming in windows behind me. Colors washed out and details soft and muddy. M8 had best color reproduction and G2 had best detail and sharpness. I switched to Google camera and results improved noticeably but not dramatically, with truer color and crisper images. I tried with and without "eis" electronic image stabilization enabled and didn't seem to make a difference. This could be a deal breaker for me but I'll keep trying, please post your results.
PS, t. Stark perhaps a photo thread is in order.
can u try camera mx or some others from appstore? been using it for sometime.
the sensor itself shouldnt be that much of a difference since its the same widely used i guess.

Did you set it to 13 megapixels? I haven't done a comparison with my g2 yet. From the little pics I took. It seems okay.

Yep 13mp and played with settings. G2 has Xcam mod but still miles better. Will try and post pics later from PC.

my impressions after 2 days:
positives:
1. awesome battery life. i would guess 6+ hours screen time easy.
2. speakers are absolutely awesome.
3. the screen is very bright. wish we could reduce it (might give longer battery life to boot!).
4. no problems with wifi or other things like heat etc.
5. user experience is fast enough - better than nexus 4.
6. excellent build quality.
negatives:
1. camera (ok for the money)
2. need root desperately. to change DPI.
3. biggest negative - tmobile reception is like 10dB lower than nexus 4. at my work, where signal is poor, i used to get LTE with that phone, but now I can't. seriously thinking on returning this .
antutu 64bit score is 33000.

yes, I've noticed my reception has decreased significantly coming from my HTC One M7 and even the ZMAX is getting better LTE reception. I usually get full bars at home and work but i'm down to 2.
considering returning the phone also and trying out the zenfone 2 since i'm in an area where band 12 is being used by a public tv network and wont benefit me at all.

In this review i am looking at Asus’s flagship phone for 2015 the Zenfone 2 complete with 64gb of storage and 4gb ram (most in any phone to date). As a flagship it is going up against some stiff competition such as the Galaxy S 6, the LG G4, and the One M9. With the specs Asus’s top version of this phone boasts it fits well into that crowd but there are areas that they did need to “skimp” on in order to reach that magical $299 unlocked price. There is a lower spec’d version of the Zenfone 2 for $199 unlocked but it does come with a slightly slower processor and 2gb of ram. We shall be focusing on the higher end one here.
Look & Feel
As you can see from the pictures i was able to grab the red version of the phone. i’m a huge fan of red so any phone released with a red option already gets a bit of an edge in my mind but i won’t let that come into my decision here. I do like that they left the front of the device all black so all you can see in the front is the small chrome speaker grill, chrome Asus logo and the hardware keys. I think it looks rather tastefully done and it does have the premium look that many seem to want these days.
The back of the phone is plastic but they do a good job hiding that a bit with a “metallic” finish with a bit of texture that help in keeping a grip on what is a large phone. It is not a fingerprint magnet by any means. In my opinion it feels even a little better in hand then last years LG G3 even is the Zenfone 2 is a bit taller thanks to those hardware keys. I personally am not a fan of these but many are...all comes down to your taste. Taking more design cues from LG the Zenfone 2 has its volume rocker is on the back. They did opt to put the power button in my opinion the worst spot on such a large phone... Dead center on the top of the device. Not only that... It's also quite "mushy" giving little to no tactical response to let you know you actually pressed it. The Zenfone 2 does have double tap to wake and sleep function as well but it did not work as intended to me all of the time.
The device’s dimensions are 152.5 x 77.2 x 10.9 mm (6.00 x 3.04 x 0.43 in) and weighs in at 170g (6.00 oz) It is a bit thick but the sides slim down to 3.5mm which make it much nicer to hold. What i will say is where the front glass on the phone meets the small “chin” below the hardware keys there is a very noticeable sharp lip. Not enough to hurt but enough to become annoying in my short time with the phone. Overall it’s a well designed phone and for the price.
Under the HoodUnder the back cover you will find a micro SD card slot for up to 128GB of expandable storage and 2...count them 2 sim card slots. This is a bit strange to have in a phone in north america but very common in other areas of the world. I did test this out and switching between phone numbers was easy enough but only sim slot 1 can handle 3g and LTE. The second slot is only for 2G and Phone calls. Inside you will also find a 3000mAh battery but this is not user removable which is a bit of a shame but that’s the way most phones seem to be going. Do note that this phone comes with Intel’s version of quick charge and the $299 version of the phone comes with a high amp quick charger. It does work with all chargers with Qualcomm’s Quickcharge 2.0 spec as well.
User InterfaceThe Zenfone 2 comes out of the box running Android 5.0 Lollipop which is nice to see. I did receive an OTA right after turning on the device but the version number stayed at 5.0. Everyone is now waiting on phones to get 5.1 but Asus am an interested to see how up to date they keep their not flagship. I will say that this phone as the most “bloatware” I have ever seen on an unlocked device. Even comes running Cleanmaster out of the box...classy. Asus is nice enough to let you uninstall much of it but for the review I wanted to keep most of it intact. I did uninstall Cleanmaster as it was just too annoying to deal with. I do however like that almost all of the phones apps live in the Play Store and can be updated without having to wait for a full firmware update. Nice moves.
Over all Asus stuck to the material design aspects of Lollipop with its revamped ZenUI. The menus are in list view and are easy to navigate. The notifications pulldown is close to stock with few differences but the quick toggles have been completely re-skinned and are customizable. I actually like the way this works and give you a quick brightness slider and access to some of the tools you may use most often on your device.
The only part of the UI i really have a problem with is the one you see most often...the launcher. To get into Google Now you must long press the home button then swipe up... not the most intuitive or the best implementation of this feature. There is also no google now hotword support built into the launcher. It took me about a day to install the Google Now Launcher and all is well.
Performance One word can describe the performance of this device...Fast! With 4gb of ram to work with i would expect nothing less. Couple that with the Intel Atom Z3580 clocked at 2.3GHz (Intel Atom Z3560 1.8 GHz in the 2gb version) and this thing is a screamer. I have had Zero slowdowns or stutters since i started playing with it and that is also after loading it up with all of my personal apps and having all of my accounts syncing all of the time. Pretty great!
On the graphics and video handling of this device it was again very good. Running the PowerVR G6430 (same as the iPhone 5s) it has no problems playing some of the most intense games. Its pushing a 1080P screen so not as many pixels as many of the other 2015 flagships. I do not run benchmarks on my phones but can tell you that you will not be disappointed.
Display The phone boasts a 72% screen to body ratio which is not too shabby. It comes with a 5.5 inch 1080p IPS display which come out to be 402ppi and to my eyes it is perfectly adequate. Images look sharp and its 3 built in screen modes. Comes set on the balance mode out of the box but has a Reading to cool things down and a Vivid mode which really makes colors pop like on the GS6, even a mode to let the user make their own settings. I left mine on balanced. Where the display does not do well is with readability outdoors. It does not get bright enough to overcome even an overcast day. At the same time does not get dark enough when trying to watch a video or read a website in pitch blackness...my eyes did feel strained. The display is just fine but it is clearly one of the areas that Asus had to give a little to keep the price down.
Camera In the press and at the US launch event this is the one area Asus spent the most time talking about. Asus is very proud of this camera and they should be...it is quite good. Lets start out front where the Zenfone 2 is rocking a 5 Mega-Pixel, Fix Focus, Wide View, camera with Asus’s PixelMaster tech. It takes decent selfies and has many modes to help you tweak them to your liking. Out back is a 13 Mega-Pixel camera with Asus’s PixelMaster tech. While the mega-pixel count may seem low for a flagship phone today it actually takes some good shots. In good lighting it did very well. It does not has the optical image stabilization of some of the more expensive phones but it even does well in dim to low light situations. Not the greatest camera but one the best i have seen at this price point for sure.
Battery Life One of the most important specs in any mobile device and I am happy to report that the Zenfone 2 delivers in the battery life department. I an not easy on my phones battery. I have all of my social media as well as 4 google accounts and 8 other email accounts constantly updating in the background. While testing i kept the phone on auto brightness. With its 3000mAh cell I was always able to through a whole day with some to spare. As mentioned before it does not have a removable battery but the quick charging is definitely a plus if you have really been hammering on it for a few hours.
In Conclusion Asus really wants to make it clear that they are coming to play. The Zenfone 2 delivers in many areas and ticks all the right boxes for what most would want out of a flagship level device. With that said even though Asus is comparing this phone to the likes of the GS6, I am much more comfortable comparing it to the 2014 flagship phones from all of its competitors. The GS5, the LG G3, the HTC One M9, let’s even throw the Oneplus One in there… all still cost more when purchased new and unlocked then the Zenfone 2 at $299 for the top model. I think that is the biggest win here for Asus. Lets not forget that it starts at just $199 unlocked! That is what most flagships smartphone cost for their lowest spec model on contract.
Just a couple notes --- you can reach Google now by holding down the home button for a moment and swiping up. Discovered this through serendipity [emoji14]
And it's odd how everyone talks about the screen being hard to see in sunlight, since I have absolutely no trouble seeing it in direct sunlight with my transition glasses. I must have weird eyes or something [emoji14]

You can pull up to Google Now from the home button. Press the capacitive home for a second and Google Now icon shows up. Just slide finger to it once it does. And from Google Now, you can set the 'OK Google' keyword to be used from any screen.

Which one to choose: Huawei Mate 8 or Samsung Galaxy A9 Pro?

I've done tons of research for choosing my next phone and the choice basically boils down to these two phones now. They both have massive batteries, which is what I need, although the A9 Pro has a bigger one. I thought I'd be better to get a second opinion from people who've already used the Mate 8 before getting one.
Here's what I've found:
Huawei Mate 8:
Pros:
+Insanely fast and snappy
+64 GB storage (important), even has a 128 GB version!
+Possibly slightly better camera than on A9 Pro (not sure)
+Covers a huge number of bands (pretty important, I will be traveling to many places)
+SloMo video
Cons:
-EMUI
-EMUI
-Subscription to a company that does crappy software
-Fingerprint scanner on the back
-On-screen buttons
Galaxy A9 Pro:
Pros:
+TouchWiz
+TouchWiz
+Subscription to a company that does civilized software
+Still pretty fast, also has 4 GB RAM
+Bigger battery at 5000mAh
+Dual SIM + dedicated microSD slot
+AMOLED screen could be a slight advantage
+Fingerprint scanner on the front
+Physical home button + capacitive buttons (I'm just so used to them coming from a Samsung device, but I'm sure I could also get used to on-screen buttons)
Cons:
- Camera a little bit underwhelming and can be hit or miss in some settings (e.g. G Note 4 camera is better)
- 32 GB storage only (guess I could live with it)
- Doesn't cover nearly as many bands
- No SloMo video, only 30 fps
The Mate 8 is clearly better hardware-wise, but I'm really concerned about the EMUI. I've read varying opinions that Nova Launcher solves most of the problems, but then also that you're still kind of stuck with menus and notification drawer that tries to look like iOS really hard. I'm also not very keen on rooting the phone and flashing a new ROM, I want something stable and that works right out of the box.
Is EMUI really that bad? Is it buggy? Are you having any issues with it? I watched some videos on YT of Huawei Mate 8 with Nova Launcher and it looked pretty good. Some people told me that after setting up the Nova Launcher they can barely tell it's EMUI, and that the notification drawer is customizable.
The A9 Pro does have that big advantage of having a peace of mind that your UI is optimized (inb4 hating on TouchWiz - it's surely way better than EMUI) and will continue to run well in the future. And that monster 5000mAh battery... it's really tempting.
What are your suggestions? Is Huawei Mate 8 still a good phone for me if I don't want to do any rooting or flashing?
Also I'm based in China. Will buying the Mate 8 in China come with any cons vs. buying outside of China? Or I just download and install the Google apks and I'm good to go?
*Disclaimer - I'm also posting this on Galaxy A series subforum to get opinions from Samsung users.
I choosed Huawei Mate 8 over A9pro

There are plenty of EMUI themes on xda that gives you material design icons , you can just install one or use together with 3rd party launcher like Nova, no need to root or switch rom for this.
The notification and quick settings menu looked nothing like ios, unless you think anything with some transparency effect equals ios. To me they look much better than that bluish-green and busy looking drop-down on touchwiz, although touchwiz does give you a bit more options on what to put on the quick settings panel. The (non-quick) settings menu may have more of a resemblance to ios in UI design, but so what, it looks clean and easy to use. Besides, how often will you be looking at the settings menu?
Overall, I'm generally satisfied with the aesthetics of EMUI 4 (I'd argue some parts better looking than touchwiz or even stock android). The main things I don't like are the stock icons and forced icon boarder, and to a lesser extent the default launcher. These are easily solvable by installing a theme and Nova Prime.
As far as user experience goes, the system runs stable, fast, and not buggy for me (what's with the hating that made you so sure Touchwiz optimized better? ) But there are some things you may want know if you haven't used EMUI before:
By default there will be power-intensive prompts and it will auto-close apps while screen is off. Some people find it unnecessary and annoying, but they can be turned off altogether or be excluded on selected apps. Just adjust it to the way you like in settings.
Some people complained about missing or delayed push notification when the phone has been idle for a few hours, I experienced it as well on early ROM versions, but I no longer encounter this problem since the last few OTA updates, push notifications now come like normal (instantly).
If you rely on on-going notification apps that shows dynamic interactive icon on the top status bar (e.g. an always-on weather app that shows current temperature in its icon), it may not work on the EMUI status bar as it will only show the default app icon. I don't use these kind of things so I'm not affected, but that's just me.
EMUI 4.x has extensive app specific battery-use management, network-use management, and phone/text harassment filter, which are great in general. But I find the harassment filter a little bit lacking in that you can't block text and phone calls using separate rules.
The camera hardware is just meh/passable if compared to other high-end phones, but still better than mid-range phones like the Galaxy a9. The camera app on EMUI 4.0 is good, on EMUI 4.1 it is great (the best I have used). EMUI 4.1 is recently being pushed to some Mate 8.
I don't know if you used 6 inch phones before or not, but I would think that having a back fingerprint scanner rather than a front one is a blessing and not a con on 6 inch devices. I'm a fan of front scanners on smaller phones, but if you tried to hold a 6-inch phone you will know how much more comfortable it is to unlock with your index-finger than with your thumb (unless you have huge hands, or that you use your phone placed on a table much more often than holding it)
If you are a die hard stock/MD fans and can't stand any EMUI design cues, or if you like flashing different roms, then you will have a hard time owning an Mate 8, because it is unlikely that you will find Cyanogen/AOSP rom for this device given that it uses Kirin SoC.
But if you don't like manually flashing roms, the Mate 8 will actually receive better rom support than the a9, because Mate 8 is a much more important product line for Huawei than the a9 is for Samsung. The Mate 8 has been on android marshmallow since the beginning, yet many Galaxy a9 are still on lollipop today (marshmallow for a9 just rolling out for a couple weeks). Mate 8 will likely receive support up to Android N/EMUI 5.0, but for the a9 I'm less confident about it.
Emui is horrible and plagued with old bugs. Install Google launcher or similar for great experience.
I installed twisted mate 8 which is a stock like custom rom.

Great, you will notice the Touchwiz was the real battery sucker and no matter how big the battery it would manage to drain it quickly. On the other side you have the glorious Mate 8 with the ugly EMUI but the great battery management. Just change the launcher, I personally have Google launcher but if you need more customization then you can choose another launcher but that will surely decrease the battery life.

Help me decide: Mate 8 or OnePlus 3T?

I have a OP3T 128GB version running Nougat, but I'm a former Samsung Note user who got spoiled by the bigger screen and the LTE bands aren't supported in my region on the 3T, so I'm leaning toward picking up a Mate 8 which does support LTE in my region for a good price and selling the OP3T.
Would you think it's a bad decision?
Well the most reasonable update would be the Mate 9. Still if the op3 does not support LTE in your region it is enough reason to look for a different phone. I have had both and they run pretty smooth, the Mate 8 with Nougat is just impressive. Besides the bigger screen makes it a winner. The OP3 has more ram and a newer processor, but in everyday tasks you won notice the difference.

Do the on screen buttons take up the extra half-inch that is gained by going from the 5.5 inch to the 6 inch screen without capacitive off screen buttons?
On older android versions, the on screen buttons were always there. But on the mate 8 and other modern android phones, they disappear majority of the time. Like in videos or games, its utilises the full screen.
Regarding the mate 8 vs op3t, it would be ideal to get a mate 9 instead. Unless cost is an issue, then both are equally as compelling. Bigger screen, dual sim & better battery with mate8 or amoled display, more compact device, faster hardware with op3t.
Depends on personal preference really.
Mate 8 + Nougat or Mate 9

Hi,
It is not a bad decision at all.
Oneplusone3T 128GB is one of the phones recently released so you have every chance of getting gr8 returns.
Mate 8 + Nougat is awesome! and matches very closely to Mate 9 but Mate 9 as you know has better hardware with Kirin 960 is nearly 30% faster from what I read on the net. Even in the benchmarks you can see the difference.
If you choose Mate 8 then go for (NXT-L29) model.
- Rooting, unlocking, is so much easier.
- Battery life is awesome ( 10hr SOT for many, 5hr to 8hr - few more , 8hr to 10hr )
- Excellent features.
- Phone feels solid, big screen, camera is fine.
- Performance is really good - no lags, no overheating, 2hrs to charge,
- Cost 500$ for 64GB, Amazon has good deals.
- For the buttons - you have the option to hide them temporarily ( like autohide taskbar in windows) it is something similar
- Mate 8 + Nougat = Awesome! :good:
Mate 9
- Excellent processor, camera , battery (better hardware) performance. Android Nougat.
- Screen size 5.9" , it has NFC and almost everything that Mate 8 has.
So if you are not bothered about money then Mate 9 is totally worth it. Bigger and better battery life of Mate 9 will allow you to enjoy the phone more. Few screenshots attached.
Go for it.
Cheers!

It does, but as someone who used both the Oneplus and the Mate series, I find it a non-issue.
The mate 8 has really thin chin so having the buttons a bit higher is beneficial for your hands. Screen estate is not a problem in general usage like browsing or using apps, it is still spacious enough compared to any other phone, and on webpages you'll be scrolling anyway. When screen size really matters like playing a game or watching a video, the nav keys auto-hide and you have the full 6 inch to enjoy. Plus there is the extra advantage of avoiding accidental touch on the nav keys when you hold the phone sideways, which could be annoying on phones with capacitive keys.
You also have the options to use quick toggle to hide it, or use the "dot" style keys.
Besides the screen, the biggest advantage the Mate 8 will give you is battery life, it will be significantly better than the oneplus 3. The EMUI 5 is also arguably a more complete system. General smoothness should be on par in both phones, maybe slightly better for Mate 8.
The disadvantage will be in gaming performance, camera performance, and a little inconvenience if you often use the phone on the table (fingerprint on the back). But these disadvantages are quite minor in my experience, I haven't got any lag issue playing the 3d games I play, the camera on Mate 8 is still fine (just not 2016 flagship level), and if you use the phone mostly by holding it then backside fingerprint is a pro.

I'll need to buy the L-09 model, since it supports LTE in my market and it has 3GB of RAM where the other model has 4GB, but I appreciate the feedback comparing the two.

They will all get Nougat ROM, but right now only Chinese versions has stable updates pushed out. For other international versions, you will either have to manually flash a Nougat ROM or join a beta program (availability varies) in order to use Nougat and EMUI 5.0 immediately. Otherwise you will have to wait a few more weeks to get the stable version Nougat update via OTA.

Hi,
There are Nougat ROMs available in this thread
You can choose which one is suitable for L09.
I found the link to Nougat for L09 here in this post
That thread has lot of important information about firmwares especially Nougat.
You can also find suitable firmware using Firmware Finder from playstore here is the link for that app
But like beachletter explained in previous post, you have to be vary about the stable updates currently available for L09. Since people with NXT-L29 model are able to root easily, I suggested you that model. But I understand why you want to choose L09.
Hope this helps.

Mate 9 vs Axon 7? (Updated, I bought the M9)

Update
I write this with the sole purpose of informing (as objectively as possible) possible buyers of the advantages and disadvantages of this terminal, since there is always a lot of talk about the good things of the phone, but seldom is spoken of the bad; given that these 2 terminals are in my opinion the best and most complete in the market today, I will write what I think and feel after having the Mate 9 for 3 days and comparing it with Axon 7.
Size
I loved it, and I think it's exquisite. I really thought that the phone would be bigger, but it is almost the same measures of the Axon 7, being that one has a screen of 5.5 "and the other one of 5.9".
Screen
I honestly thought the screen would be worse because of the change in resolution, but it's pretty decent, and I can say that unless you're not playing, you're not going to notice the difference between the QHD screen and the FHD of Mate 9. The resolution difference will be noticed immediately in games, I already installed 2 and I can say that it is quite annoying to see the graphics a little pixelated and with that lack of sharpness and definition that I had in Axon 7. Still not sure if the lack of quality is because most of the applications are not optimized for Kirin yet or is because of the limitation of the screen,
Performance
I can say that I had never had such a fast and responsive terminal, even with Android stock. Comparing the 820 and 4GB RAM from the Axon 7, I have to give this one to the Mate 9 because the stupid speed it has, there is nothing more to say.
Software
Both UI pleased me, although I must say that EMUI 5 is a breakthrough. MiFavor of the Axon 7 still feels like past versions of EMUI, while EMUI feels a little to iOS, which is nice for me, even when I hate Apple and its products, I must accept that they have good taste for designs. Both ZTE and Huawei have already launched some updates and both have been polishing things, so this should not be a worry. I didn't take in consideration the version of Android, because in the UI i always more important the version of this than the version of Android.
Sound
The Axon 7 is better, both in speakers and in audio output. I didn't like the speakers of Mate 9, especially for the positioning. Although the headset works as a speaker, the reality is that the volume is far below the other speaker, and this panning at the end does not feel like stereo and just confuses. The concept is good, but the implementation was not the best, they would have put up speakers of similar power to achieve this correctly.
Camera
I am one of the few (starting to be many) who are disappointed by this camera. It is not a wonder or magic, it takes good pictures, but nothing more. I sincerely bought the equipment with the promise that it would be an incredible experience in photography, but the only thing I got are decent photos and several times I had to use the manual mode, when I expected that the Auto mode was already quite good, and only use the manual mode in very complicated conditions. There is much to improve here, and I can say that I do not notice any difference between the photos made with Mate 9 and Axon 7, and even, I like more the colors that the Axon 7 has. On the other hand, the videos on the Mate 9 are way better that the mediocre quality on the axon 7.
Battery
There is nothing to say, the battery on the Mate 9 is impressive; at the end of the day I come around 60% with about 3-4 hours of screen. The Axon 7 was giving me at most 4-5 hours of screen.
Price
The Axon 7 can be bought for about € 400, while the Mate 9 can be get for around € 650. Does the difference is justified ?, no in my opinion, and I think that if you are not looking for a big phone or a giant battery, the Axon 7 is the device to buy. Having a "just decent" screen, a poorly achieved sound and a camera that does not behave much higher than the Axon 7, made it a big disappointment for me to have buyed this equipment.
I waited the Axon 7 for many months but I gave up on it because I never could get one, is really hard to get where I live.
I was going with the Mate 9 because Huawei has big presence in Europe and is easier to get, but just last week I saw an Axon 7(A2017G) at good price and I pulled the trigger. The initial plan was to play some days with the Axon 7 and then sell it, because I already had the plan for the Mate 9, but with each day that passes, I'm thinking in keep it.
I was planning to get the Mate 9 because I'm really interested in camera quality, and I have seen Mate 9 is slightly better in this, but not for much in my opinion and it comes with the cons of losing the nice audio and the screen resolution, but with the pros of a better camera and battery.
I'm not interested anymore in development(root, ROM's, kernels, mods, etc), usually all the things I need now come with the stock ROM. I'm more interested in the camera, screen, battery and overall performance and experience.
Both cost the same where I live, so I was wondering if anyone has any experience with the Mate 9 or had the opportunity to play with it, I would be interested in your opinions and comments so I can take a decisions about these 2 devices.
Thanks

One plus 3T, hands down. If they'd had that around when I purchased the Axon, I would've went with that.
If not, but the mate 9.
actually all phone had the same spec but only the firmware, kernel and Os and great dev to make the whole experience user friendly, unfortunately what i can tell from Axon 7 G version the software experience is totally different with other variant which i think will leads to the main downfall of this great hardware device..... ZTE will not focus on this device after nougat updates and basically this is the main problem and strategy for all mid range phones except for couple of brands in the market like Xiaomi/redmi. Xiaomi or redmi most likely will not upgrade their mid range phone OS but they still give consumer their latest MIUI look and feel which makes their customer happy... so far i just did not see ZTE what they are trying to do... same goes to Asus... about are my 2 cents of thought

Actually I was considering the OP3T some weeks ago, but the problems with the screen, bluetooth, notifications, etc., make me discard it. I think is a great device, but I'm more a multimedia consumer and a good screen, stereo speakers and decent camera are more valuable to me than being able to have development on it, and the OP3T fails on 2 of those.
Besides that, I really hate capacitive buttons and front facing fingerprint reader, they just take unnecessary space and make the device more bulky, and even when the Axon 7 has capacitive buttons, the form factor and tiny bezels make it be smaller than many phones of the same screen size with on-display buttons.
Anyway, I really value your comment and I will have it present for my next buy, because it seems that OP4 could come sooner with some nice surprises.
The Mate 9 is probalby better in almost every way. I see only three things better on the Axon 7 : the amoled 2560*1440 screen, the audio and the development (i don't know if things have changed with Huawei or not).
But the price point isn't the same at all !
Personally, i own the Axon 7 and i don't regret buying one second. It's a great device !

Actually, I'm pretty impressed by ZTE respond with the Axon 7, most of the complaints and things users asked, are put on the phone continuously., and the fact they allowed to unlock the bootloader gives the impressions that they actually want to care about the phone. I think that the Axon would receive another update at least after Nougat, because when they were advertising selling it, ZTE advertised as first Daydream ready device, which also implies Nougat device.
Besides, I don't consider the Axon 7 as mid range device, and ZTE hasn't anything else to be fully working on.

The Axon 7 is perfect in all aspect except one, low light pictures. It has a very good optical and electronic stabilization for video recording. And color accuracy of pictures is remarkable. The screen is superior to any other phone in it's price range with the excellent Samsung panel. The battery lasts for almos 2 days. I got an average of 14 hours of screen on time with medium use (emails, whatsapp, texts, web browsing, phone calls, Skype, hangouts, PDF view, taking pictures, etc). I have root the device but I am using stock kernel, stock rom with a couple of tweaks, but always with nominal voltages and speeds. ZTE has a nice service for customers here in USA. It has a public beta program and I really like the way they are doing with this phone.
Nougat has been announced by ZTE to be released before the end of this month and that unlocks Daydream.

I remember you from the other european thread, back in july when there was only on thread for Axon 7 and there wasn't forum yet.
Anyway, I think that battery and camera are better on Mate 9, but I'm thinking on that FHD screen, moreover because of the size of the phone and also because is IPS, so no Daydream at all. For design, performance, usability, etc., I think both are great devices, but the Axon 7 and how ZTE has been polishing the software and the camera in this time have me impressed.
Lol you are comparing a flash ship priced mate 9 (800$) to a $400 device??

That depends where you live, and as I said on the OP, I can get any of them around €550, so that's why price is not a factor for me, and I'm more interested in the overall experience of each one.
Mate 9 for us in the States is $600 vs the axon 7 at $380-$400,depending on where you buy from

I always see you are really active around here and is really nice to have people like you helping others.
I feel what you said, and indeed I only picked the device as an experiment, but I'm thinking if I should keep it. For me, this phone with some AOSP/CM development could be for me the Nexus that never came in 2016 because of the Pixel branding. Back in the dark times I used to root my device, install some custom stuff and undervolt/underclock in order to have a decent battery life, but with the Axon 7 even with stock I'm able to get 2 days with around 4 hrs SOT, but having +10 hrs SOT sounds epic.
As far as low light pictures, camera is an important point for me, I still know is a phone and I don't pretend to have the best phone's camera on the market, but I don't see the pictures from the Axon 7 bad at all and I think they are pretty decent (which is enough for me), and if someone needs more, we have the manual mode available as well. I attach some that I have taken over the week.
Maybe the question would be if ZTE is planning to improve the camera or if there has been any improvements since it was launched?, I would be interesting in knowing this, I have only 1 week with the device and I can't tell if ZTE is focusing and improving the camera with updates or not.
Thanks

Only 4 tweaks can provide you +14 hrs with this phone. Take a look at this.

Any word about the camera?, I mean, if ZTE has been improving it with updates or if is something they are trying to get better?, I would be really interested in knowing this.
I do not know. We have the initial ROM and 2 updates. So in average we have an update every 8 weeks or so. I got this phone barely one month ago. Probably people with longer experience could tell you whether the low light camera has been improved or not. There are other apps with better behavior under low light conditions there is something written in these forums you can just search for.

Mate 9 Pro for me is a rip off of the S7 Edge, which I don't like at all, and I think is a steal at that price. I have always stay away from capacitive buttons and front fingerprint scanners.
Still I don't understand the decision to put a QHD screen on a 5.5" device and let the 6.0" with just FHD, regular Mate 9 with QHD and AMOLED display could be a nice improvement.

I hope ZTE keeps improving the software, and than more and more people keep joining the development scene.
Thanks for your answers!.
Added little comparison with the Mate 9 after spending some days with it.
Have both Axon 7 and Mate 9. I'm a slut for big screens. They both have good and bad issues. FOR the price the Zte can't be beat. Do like the M9 interface, large screen and IPS 1080 display.
After my s7 Edge I'll probably never buy Samsung again
