Glad to see that someone was kind enough to put up a proper guide thread
I hope I was able to help you earlier.
About root, I was looking for a solution, but unfortunately the only way to get root working is by flashing a modded kernel and then supersu zip. Chainfire did this for nexus and someone did this for Moto X 2014.
Unfortunately I don't know anything about modding kernel and we need someone who is able to do that, or else you get bootloop flashing root.

Why Dont Simply Flash Chainfire's Zip ???? http://download.chainfire.eu/743/SuperSU/BETA-SuperSU-v2.52.zip

I did, results in bootloop and freezes in bootloader warning before bootanimation. The explanation of why is above (at least what I saw in research).

I'm not so sure exactly what, maybe a dev or someone with more experience can take a look and understand better. But looks like needs modifications regarding sepolicy. Take a look at chainfire's thread to see more details in his first post:

@Vidhanth, maybe you know or have an idea what needs to be done?

I'm talking about this part especifically:
"
Acquiring root without modifying the boot images is still under investigation. Please note that the current method will not be officially supported. Future roots may require a clean system: we are at a very early stage of root for 6.0, methods used are subject to change.
For the modders, you can do the sepolicy modifications yourself as follows:
- root a reference device (4.4+ with SELinux enabled) with v2.50+
- extract the sepolicy file from the target boot image's ramdisk
- with the reference device connected to ADB:
Code:
adb push sepolicy /data/local/tmp/sepolicy
adb shell su -c "supolicy --file /data/local/tmp/sepolicy /data/local/tmp/sepolicy_out"
adb shell su -c "chmod 0644 /data/local/tmp/sepolicy_out"
adb pull /data/local/tmp/sepolicy_out sepolicy_out
- replace the sepolicy file in the boot image's ramdisk with the sepolicy_out file
- profit
"

Am I supposed to install this manually? If I copy the zip to the device it gets detected by the system update, but then the update fails.

[5.0.2][Restore to Stock][XT1033] Asia Retail [Dual Sim][4.4.2/4.4.2][LockBootloader]

I am Starting this with a very simple reason that the filefactory link for the Firmware which is the only link currently available right now is a crapy link. The download failed six times before i could finally download it. So After all the hassle I went through, I am uploading the firmware with a dropbox link and hence a lot more trustworthy.
I am changing to google docs and dev-host, hoping this link would survive a lot longer, and i'll be putting more mirrors soon.
4.4.4 is not Pre-installed on any Moto G, hence Restoring to stock is only possible via first falling back to 4.4.2 and then updating the system to 4.4.4.
LOLLIPOP is out. KITKAT is moved into Legacy SectionUPDATE: 4.4.4 is now available out-of-the box hence it is not mandatory anymore to revert back to 4.4.2 if somebody wants to restore Moto G to stock. Direct restore to 4.4.4 is possible All KitKat Roms are moved into Optional section. I still love kitkat and I am not ready to move to 5.0.2. I will wait for it to mature
UPDATE: 5.0.2 is now available out-of-the-box hence it is possible to revert back to it directly! Sorry, I have been little late in uploading because of my exams
Thread is little messy, I might organize a bit more.
When Can I Use This?:
1. Your phone is soft-bricked
2. Your phone is hard-bricked but goes to bootloader
3. You want to update your phone to 5.0.2 and OTA is not working.
4. You want to downgrade from 5.0.2 to 4.4.4 or 4.4.2
5. You just want a factory reset
6. You want to come back to ASIA Retails after wondering in GPE or GB firmware
Pre-Requisite:
Installed Motorola Drivers.
Instructions:
1. Download 5.0.2 firmware and Extract it to a folder (More Links and mirrors in Downloads section at the end of the post)
2. Download mfastboot-v2 and Extract it into the same folder
3. Reboot the phone into Bootloader
4. Step 4 can be done two ways Method 1 is manually typing commands and teaches you how a bit about android Method 2 is more automatic and easier
Method 1:Run Following commands from the Command Prompt after cd-ing to the folder, one by one
If you do not wish to lock bootloader skip 4.1 and 4.3
4.1
Code:
mfastboot.exe oem lock begin
4.2
Code:
mfastboot.exe flash partition gpt.bin
mfastboot.exe flash motoboot motoboot.img
mfastboot.exe flash logo logo.bin
mfastboot.exe flash boot boot.img
mfastboot.exe flash recovery recovery.img
mfastboot.exe flash system system.img_sparsechunk.0
mfastboot.exe flash system system.img_sparsechunk.1
mfastboot.exe flash system system.img_sparsechunk.2
mfastboot.exe flash system system.img_sparsechunk.3
mfastboot.exe flash modem NON-HLOS.bin
mfastboot.exe erase modemst1
mfastboot.exe erase modemst2
mfastboot.exe flash fsg fsg.mbn
mfastboot.exe erase cache
mfastboot.exe erase userdata
4.3
Code:
mfastboot.exe oem lock
4.4
Code:
mfastboot.exe reboot
OR
Method 2: Download Retail_AS.bat/Retail_AS+LockBootLoader.bat from Attachments, Extract it to the same folder and just run
5. And there you go! Phone is booting Lollipop

Remedy ::: Flashing Failed
Thanks @sw33ty4ppu for asking this question.
Critical Commands (Absolutely Necessary Commands, which if failed will hard brick)
Code:
mfastboot.exe flash partition gpt.bin
mfastboot.exe flash motoboot motoboot.img
mfastboot.exe flash boot boot.img
Non-Critical (If these failed, It will still allow you to go to bootloader and start flashing again)
Code:
mfastboot.exe flash logo logo.bin
mfastboot.exe flash recovery recovery.img
mfastboot.exe flash system system.img_sparsechunk.0
mfastboot.exe flash system system.img_sparsechunk.1
mfastboot.exe flash system system.img_sparsechunk.2
mfastboot.exe flash modem NON-HLOS.bin
mfastboot.exe erase modemst1
mfastboot.exe erase modemst2
mfastboot.exe flash fsg fsg.mbn
mfastboot.exe erase cache
mfastboot.exe erase userdata
First check which command gave you an error in flashing.
Any of the non-critical command fails to flash, You can start flashing again and hope it might work, you can also check if the downloaded files are proper or their extraction from zip is proper. You can ask for help here on XDA in Q&A section as well.
Any of the critical command fails to flash, it is absolutely necessary that you do not exit bootloader. Because when device is in bootloader mode, bootloader is loaded into RAM and is still the original copy, you can still take the phone which is already in bootloader mode to a friend's place and get the flashing done there. But if you reboot bootloader somehow(knowingly/unknowingly). Man, You're screwed. Morale of the story, don't turn off/ reboot your phone until correct flashing is performed.
This also is another reason that experienced users prefer to enter commands manually than rely on an automated .bat or .sh script.
OTA update instructions
There are two things necessary for OTA
1. Stock ROM (so you get notification)
2. Stock Recovery (so the update is automatically installed)
FAQ:: Does having root affect the OTA update? ANS:: No
FAQ:: Can I retain root after OTA? ANS:: No, root is lost
If you are looking for a Flashable Zip for stock ROM, Then you can go here by @Sk.D.
This version however is pre rooted and does not flash stock recovery!
I do not appreciate my Noob Friendly Instructions being copied! I really put hours into making it simple. Least I expect is a link to my thread
Anyone willing to mirror the link is welcome!

I think you can because the firmware would carry Motorola signature and hence shouldn't have problem installing it form mfastboot. The gb firmware should pass signature verification and get installed

I had the same issue. What I did was, in code 4.2, before this line:
"mfastboot.exe flash modem NON-HLOS.bin",
i added
"mfastboot.exe flash system system.img_sparsechunk.3",
as in the archive, there are three sprsechunk files.. Then the device booted up fine. Pls try and do let me know if I am wrong.
Is it necessary to flash all modules if we just want to return to stock recovery and remove root? Can we remove root and lock the bootloader without flashing all modules?
Thank you very much bro.. Issue resolved

[GUIDE] Restore softbricked phone after Lollipop update

FIRST OF ALL
(Also for downgrading to KitKat without softbricked phone!)
Okay, I decided to do the OTA to lollipop, everything went fine. So after some use I decided to play with the /system partition. I formatted it without making a working backup so my phone was kinda softbricked. REMEMBER THIS THREAD IS NOT FOR HARDBRICKED BOOTLOADERS, you guys have to wait.
SO WHAT TO DO?
1. Plug your phone into fastboot in your pc.
2. Flash a custom recovery, like CWM, I know you'll have a screen rimble effect due the new bootloader (doesn't matter)
3. Open recovery and keep it plugged into PC, recovery will have adb on by default so leave recovery as it is.
4. Open CMD and type:
Code:
cd directory-with-adb.exe-and-fastboot.exe-etc.
(I assume that you guys know how to use adb and fastboot with CMD)
5. Type:
Code:
adb devices
6. Your Moto's serial number should show up in the attached devices list (serialnumber, recovery), if not download the driver installer from http://adbdriver.com
7. Now download a firmware flashable zip to the directory in your CMD (CyanogenMod or stock firmwares from here)
8. Now you have to make sure you are able to mount the /sdcard in recovery: To make sure do a /data and media wipe. (Also helps on GPe ROM and the encryption problem!)
9. Now you can push the downloaded zip to the phone's sdcard using:
Code:
adb push yourrom.zip /sdcard/yourrom.zip
It will take some time.
10. Now you can install but you may face a not working SIM or WiFi, you need to download a .xml.zip firmware corresponding to your just flashed version. Navigate to your firmware folder using CMD. Then type:
Code:
fastboot flash modem NON-HLOS.bin
fastboot erase modemst1
fastboot erase modemst2
fastboot flash fsg fsg.mbn
11. Now your phone should work. You will have that annoying screen rimble. Sometimes it's gone, just turn screen off for a few minutes. It will be fixed when you install the stock recovery and then flash an lollipop OTA zip just like before! (OTA's will still show up and works with updating )
WARNING!
SOME GUYS MADE A HUGE MISTAKE AND BRICKED THEIR BOOTLOADER. THEY FLASHED LOLLIPOP OTA, THEN DOWNGRADED TO 4.4.2 AND THEY TRIED TO UPDATE TO 4.4.4 BY OTA!
THAT RUINED THE BOOTLOADER SEE BELOW!
FOR HARDBRICKED DEVICES
You ruined your bootloader, we need a mbm-ci (blankflasher tool) with the 5.0 bootloader. We have to wait till Motorola releases it. So no support yet.
Sorry guys, that was the risk!
HOPE YOU GUYS LIKE THIS TUTORIAL!
Thanks for the guide.

Hey I flashed this file now the change is that previously my both the IMEI(S) were showing 0 now 1st one is showing 0 but 2nd one has changed to null.
Secondly i request you to please come and join the below mentioned thread and please please help us all who have erased IMEI(S) with your knowledge and skills.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g/help/info-moto-g-imei0-t2925970
Edit: can you help in telling me how you modified this fsg_gio.img file? Or if you have got it from somewhere else please point...
As it is a very important file and a developer on above mentioned thread needs to know how this file got modified this will lead us further in restoring the imei numbers... as because moto g is made in a very different way... there is a lot of encryption done in its partitions which is very difficult to decrypt.

DOWNLOAD http://motofirmware.com/files/file/1055-reteuall-xt1092-50-lxe2246-19-cid7-cfcxmlzip/
Enjoy!
How to flash (taken from https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/standalone/bootloader/recovery-images and modified)
After downloading the image for your device:
Unzip the image.
Put your device in fastboot mode. [e.g. by using "$ fastboot reboot"]
NOTE: You must use the Motorola fastboot utility to flash (included in the Darwin/, Linux/ or Windows/ directory). Please do NOT use the Android fastboot utility [better known as "mfastboot.exe" - so you probably change the command "fastboot" to "mfastboot"]
Follow the flashing steps in the .xml file that was included in the package.
A typical flashing sequence includes all these partitions, but might vary depending on your product - so please use the sequence in the .xml file in your package:
$ fastboot flash partition gpt.bin
$ fastboot flash motoboot motoboot.img
$ fastboot reboot-bootloader
$ fastboot flash logo logo.bin
$ fastboot flash boot boot.img
$ fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
$ fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.0
$ fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.1
$ fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.2
$ fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.3
$ fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.4
$ fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.5
$ fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.6
$ fastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.7
$ fastboot flash modem NON-HLOS.bin
$ fastboot erase modemst1
$ fastboot erase modemst2
$ fastboot flash fsg fsg.mbn
$ fastboot erase customize [leave that out if you have special customization from motomaker]
$ fastboot erase clogo [leave that out if you have special customization from motomaker]
$ fastboot reboot
You also have the option to erase all the data on your device with
$ fastboot erase userdata
$ fastboot erase cache

What would be the use for this? For devices without an unlockable bootloader? Just curious why this wouldn't suffice.
It will be useful when you want to lock the bootloader back again.
I'm sure you'll want it if you were from a country like mine.

Once you request for the unlock code and unlock the bootloader of your device its done, relocking won't help you to claim warranty if the service center guy looks it up.

Hi, thanks for the upload.
I have a question, as my device is XT1092, the european version. But my carrier, Orange Spain, sells the Moto X unlocked, or they say so, and my phone version goes by 21.21.45.victara_oraeu.oraeuall.en.EU oraes. Should I be able to flash the ROM? I have experience doing so, so my question is just this one.
Thanks.
Yes, you can flash this image.

I'm pretty sure I flashed this file on my Orange Moto X but I still have "orafr" after "22.21.19.victara_reteu.reteuall.en.eu".
Is it the same for you ?

I have that too, but since i flashed the retail modem (modem and fsg files) i think the "orafr" is related to the efs partition (something we don't "touch" during the flash process.

was searching for the 5.0 stock cause each time i've downgraded to stock 4.4.4 and OTA'd to the latest.. and it was timeboggling!
Thank you!

[GUIDE]Safely Restore to Stock

***RESTORE TO STOCK 4.4.4 SAFELY***
This guide is only for those who have entered into the world of "Customization" after getting the 4.4.4 update via OTA, before unlocking their bootloaders, or for those whose devices were shipped with 4.4.4.
After watching so many members of XDA going ahead, skipping important steps while trying to Restore their Moto E to stock 4.4.4, and ultimately ending up failing to do so, or in the worst case a BRICK, it's time I put in a few words here...
If you follow the steps correctly, you WON'T BRICK your device, and will be able to enjoy the fully restored firmware.
1) gpt.bin (WARNING: DO NOT flash this file)
Fastboot command :
mfastboot.exe flash partition gpt.bin
This is the file which contains all the partition information of your phone. It gets updated with each OTA update, and you CANNOT DOWNGRADE the partition table. If you somehow end up flashing the file, either the remaining commands may succeed, or fail... And when, you accept OTAs,!!!BRICKED!!!
2) motoboot.img (WARNING: DO NOT flash this file)
Fastboot command :
mfastboot.exe flash motoboot motoboot.img
This is your bootloader. I have very little info on how it gets flashed through each update... The bootloader is the bios of your phone. If you mess up this file, GOD knows what will happen!!! You won't be able to boot up your device, not even to the bootloader mode (or fastboot mode as some other people call it).
IF ANY ONE OF THE ABOVE FILES ARE MESSED UP, YOU CAN SAY GOODBYE TO YOUR PHONE FOREVER!!
Now, the commands which you should execute are listed below:
mfastboot.exe flash logo logo.bin
mfastboot.exe flash boot boot.img
mfastboot.exe flash recovery recovery.img
Now, Check inside your firmware zip for the numbers (system.img_sparsechunk.0, system.img_sparsechunk.1 etc.). If they are 0,1,2 then follow the steps above then type in:
mfastboot.exe flash system system.img_sparsechunk.0
mfastboot.exe flash system system.img_sparsechunk.1
mfastboot.exe flash system system.img_sparsechunk.2
Or , if you have like 1,2,3 then type:
mfastboot.exe flash system system.img_sparsechunk.1
mfastboot.exe flash system system.img_sparsechunk.2
mfastboot.exe flash system system.img_sparsechunk.3
Now type in:
mfastboot.exe flash modem NON-HLOS.bin
mfastboot.exe erase modemst1
mfastboot.exe erase modemst2
mfastboot.exe flash fsg fsg.mbn
mfastboot.exe erase cache
mfastboot.exe erase userdata
You MUST execute the commands in the order given above, to safely restore to KitKat 4.4.4.
All the best!!! :good:
This is a working tutorial to get and install the 5.1 OTA.
unrooting
when I run the first command ("mfastboot flash partition gpt.bin") in minimal adb...it showing ""mfastboot" is not recognized as an internal or external command" ..please tell me what i missed?

Why the hell are you trying to do so....?
Does reading my full post waste a lot of time?
Please ELI5 to me:
My condition right now:
Bootloader: 5.1
Bootlock: UNLOCKED
OS: 5.1 Optimized
Root: ROOTED
Can I restore to 4.4.4 by skipping that 2 command?
If so please reword your introduction to:
This guide is only for those who
- Have entered into the world of "Customization" after getting the 4.4.4 update via OTA, before unlocking their bootloaders.
- Device shipped with 4.4.4
- Device that updated to 5.x stock
And your device is
- Unlocked / Locked / Doesn't matter
- Rooted / Not roooted / Doesn't matter
- TWRP-ed / Original recovery intact / doesn't matter

Yes you can do so... Just follow the tutorial.... You can get back to stock safely....
1) Make sure you clear all partitions from your phone except ur sd card... Do this via TWRP
2) Now you have a clean system.... You are ready to enter the commands
MAKE SURE YOU EXECUTE ALL OF THEM IN SEQUENCE (Except the ones I have told to leave out namely gpt and motoboot).
You are done!

yop, thaks for your time but i have rly one problem... after installing Lollipop, i cant connect to any mobile operator. is that problem caused by fact, lollipop i installed is from Brozail or whatever? is there any fix for that?
nope your tutorial bricked my phone :/ it will not help when you will not flash gpt.bin
just restored back, updated and boom bricked... your guide does not help
not working
Hi, I did everything as per post.
After rebbot I am shown old boot menu for some time.
But then I am back into lolipop .... Please advise if I missed something.
I just followed your instructions. They seem to have worked well. Thanks!
One comment- I understand that the first two commands are not to be followed, but perhaps it would be wiser to not give the full command that will brick the phone? That way people who just see the number and the command won't just be bricking their phone when they don't read the full instructions. Just say "don't use any command that includes gpt" or something like that instead of giving them the command.

I like your suggestions... But I made this post for those who wanted to downgrade.
I hope u understand that downgrading is a very risky process, and EVERYONE SHOULD READ EVERY SINGLE LINE prior to trying to mess with their phone. Some told me to write the full commands so that they can clearly understand, while some like you are telling me to be more precise
Well, it's too tough for me to step on two boats at the same time. But still, I will try to be more precise for my next tutorial

I told not to flash the gpt, AS WELL AS THE MOTOBOOT... It has been proved by other devs here at XDA, that these two will brick ur phone, and not the other ones!!!
So, don't blame me. You must have done something that was not mentioned here, that was responsible for the brick.

Can u give me the link of the firmware? I think something is wrong with the files....
Else you can directly flash the 5.1 fresh by following the instructions from here
