OnePlus X screen broke easily - OnePlus X General

Hi there,
After using the OnePlus X just a week it fall out of my pocket on the ground. I was not wearing my original silicone case that comes with the phone so that made it very slippery. My original screenprotector is still on the phone but the display is shattered completely and the digitizer is broken as well (only a few ink lines in the display).
I want to warn you about this. I highly advise you to use a tempered glass protector or at least a case to make it less slippery as I hope this does not happen to you (nobody wants to see a grown man with tears in his eyes).
I made a ticket at OnePlus Support, I even chatted with them. Nobody knows what the repair costs as they said in the chat I will have assistance from the RRR (refund, repair and replacement) department. Hereby my advise, be gentle with this delicate but awesome phone. :good:
Update: after quite a lot of chatting and calling I got my answer: 114 euros to fix the screen.

Damn that sucks big time

Mine fell off a table 60cm high onto a wooden floor and did not even show a dent. I agree about the slipperiness of the handset, my phone slipped off a level table surface which I can't still figure!
I feel for you!

Yeah but it wasn't really that high, the brick surface was the biggest problem I think. I could not believe my eyes when I saw the damage.

Phone as status symbol. Are u serious.

OMG! I will never take off that protective case T_T I feel sorry for you men, that sucks a lot.

Why?? WHY??? The pain... BUT now you own the awsome spider app
I left the backside protector and only cut out the camera and flash. So it is not that slippery.
But I know the pain with sweaty hands. The phone is like soap.....

I feel sorry for you brother but thanks a lot for sharing your thought on protective case!!!

No problem. OnePlus still has no estimate on repair costs and duration. I have chatted with one of the servicedesk persons, and he said I would hear something yesterday and I didn't. Any advice? Maybe from former OnePlus (1 or 2) users? Thanks in advance

You'll just have to wait for their response, OPO nor OP2 has AMOLED display .... So no one can give you the estimate currently ....
I know about Moto X though... The Moto X Second Gen has 5" AMOLED display , and or replacement they would charge around 20K(INR) ... But it also had those 3 infra-red sensors on it ... and it defers from company to company .
Do let us know after you get a reply from them .
Also for other members, I think the stock silicon case doesn't protect the front glass ... the glass is slightly curved and is protruding outwards most probably , I can't verify it clearly ....

Thanks for your detailed answer! Wow that's 284 euro's for a repair. I think it will cost at least 15 euros less (the OPX costs 269 over here).
I have called them and I got an e-mail right away, which says that they wil know within 48 hours what a repair will cost. Will keep you posted if I have further details!

Very sorry to hear that, friend.
I've been round OP since the beginning, and their customer care is/was non existent.
I hope I'm wrong, Pete Lau (or Carl), acknowledged that their customer support was poor, and promised to improve it,
Carl and Pete have made a lot of promises that weren't kept
Perhaps an older member who has had recent experience with them could give some input?
Very sorry to hear about your accident.

What's the height it fell off from??
And can you tell about the back glass how durable it is.. Easily getting scratches? I mean is a case required or tempered glass in front is enough..
Since you already experienced it ( a pic would be great)

Super weird, light scratches on the screen?

So a long story short, we drove down and bought 2 brand new Nexus S phones.... we did open them to make sure they powered on and stuff but it had that top protective layer on the screen.... so we drive back (6 hour return trip, had lots of fun explaining this to the border guys).
So now, we take off the protective cover... to use the phones, I have at least 4 light scratches on mine screen... I feel sick... call my buddy, the exact same thing... WTF? I would not believe it if I did not see it.... they are not bad enough to warrant another 6 hour drive, but it certainly makes me dislike my new phone a little more and it already hurts the resale value....
Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem? What is best buys return policy? Then again, they might not even believe me and blame me?
I've not had this problem, thankfully. My NS is gorgeous all around. Very happy with it so far.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Sadly Samsung cheaped out on this phone and decided NOT to include Gorilla Glass. Bad move...I don't understand why manufacturers feel the need to move backwards sometime.
Anyway, Best Buy's return policy is 14 days, no restocking fee. They shouldn't give you any trouble with this particular issue as long as the rest of the phone isn't damaged (i.e. dropped).
Actually I read somewhere in here that if you bought the phone at full price you have 30 with no restocking fee
I see, but again... it is a 6 hour drive round trip and then a fight with the border... hahaha.... it was the second the layer came off I could notice, I am sick about it... because it is an amazing, beautiful phone... and when i could not understand it... it only got worse when my friend said the same thing, 2 strange.
I might call, check stock, talk to a manager and make the drive.... thx all

This is true for buying at T-Mobile stores. Best Buy (as I was explained on Saturday) has a 14-day for outright and on-contract purchases. Definitely give the store a call to double-check. At least they removed those darn restocking fees. I couldn't believe my ears at first!

Maybe Corning (maker of Gorilla Glass) wasn't able to produce curved gorilla glass like Samsung wanted. That would be my guess.
I've just noticed some small "scratches" on my screen too. They almost look like glue residue, but I wiped my phone clean and they're still there. Maybe it could be the oleophobic coating coming off? Ill try to upload a picture when I get my camera back.

Broke my screen - GoogleFI protection?

Hi All,
Haven't broken a screen in 4 years -first week with a bigger device slipped out of my hand when going into my pocket and the screen cracked. Weak as **** in my opinion but what are you going to do.
I contacted googlefi about nexus protect. They said they are going to be rolling out their own protection plan but could not tell me a launch date. Does anyone know anything about this?
I really can't believe this phone is that weak..

It must have hit just right. The other night I was reading in bed and nodded off for a second while holding the 6p. It hit the side table, then the hardwood floor. I'm not using a case, just a Skinomi full body and screen Tech Skin, but there wasn't a scratch. (phew!) As far as Fi offering protection, I gave up on that route and bought a Square Trade warranty instead.
Yes! Horrible phone because the OP doesn't handle it properly. Shame on Gorilla Glass and Huawei! /s

It did hit on the corner, the aluminum bezel bent right in which caused the glass to break - I have read many threads about the phone bending, I am a bit disappointed, I went with the 6p for the aluminum over plastic however this has only seemed to hurt me rather than help. Google told me their pricing options $5 / month and a $99 deductible however no idea when the plan was rolling out. They did advise I was eligible for when it comes out so now I guess I just have to wait. Phone works fine, just bothers me, I like my devices clean.

Wow, someone is a bit full of themselves aren't they? Correct, I do believe that a phone SHOULD NOT break with one drop from pocket height, I've owned countless smart phones in the past 4 years, none of which I broke the screen in that time; while I do not drop my device often and I take care of them mistakes happen. (My galaxy S4 still looks brand new). Therefore I am critiquing the build quality of this phone.

I'm not really sure what your point is, or why you are trolling. You are of no help to my thread. As I said mistakes happen, I made one, and dropped my phone. I'm not saying it is anyone's fault other than mine. I did however state I was DISAPPOINTED in the build quality as I do not believe one drop should crack a screen, especially from pocket height.
Just because someone doesn't agree with your opinions does not make them a troll. That word is thrown around WAY too many times around the here. I am not arguing with you, bud. But your bad luck doesn't mean that the phone is faulty. Glass shatters at different rates depending on speed, force, and angle. All of these phones you dropped did not drop at the same rate for these variables each time you dropped them. When the anger subsides, (and yes I get mad at myself also when i break something...human nature), just be an adult about it and chalk it up to a bad accident. Unless of course you are younger than an adult. In that case, I apologize and carry on

One drop on the corner will break a screen.
I have seen iPhones, Android of various brands break from pocket height.
All you need it the right location, angle, etc.
There is nothing wrong with the phone, you dropped it and it broke.
You can get it replaced right now. Project Fi offering one time replacements for $100 bucks
Problem Solved -
Bought my phone with AMEX they have 90 day protection against broken devices. I can file a claim with them and they will refund my purchase price.
Glad it worked out well for you...

Shattered glass

This morning I stupidly shattered the glass on my HN8. I propped it up whilst talking on Skype then it fell face down on the floor. The glass is completely shattered. However the the digitiser and touch screen all appear to be working fine with no bleed or loss of touch sensitivity anywhere on the screen. So I'm guessing I could just replace the glass or get one of these little repair shops you see around to do it? Any advice would be great right now. Seems such a shame. Saw a German Youtube on how to change the glass on a Huawei P8 possibly looks like it might be a bit too involved for my skill level?
Going to get it fixed at local mobile repair shop. £195 and it will take about a month. Moral of the story DO NOT DROP and smash your screen!!! Had a look on ebay and a few other places £150 for digitiser and screen frame, but not brave enough to attempt repair myself. The only good thing to come out of this is when I get it back. Nougat might be available. Did I mention... Don't drop your phone and smash your screen?

Also I hate Big bulky cases. The Handset is big enough. I realise It probably would have spared my screen, but still. Thanks for taking time to offer a solution though. Appreciated!!!:good:
I have already handed my device in for repair. doesn't look too involved in this video. However I still don't feel confident enough to attempt something like this. Maybe the next time I shatter the screen In all seriousness though Just be aware if you fix your phone by yourself or get it done like I have, It's not going to be a cheap, quick job.

Back glass of the S8 feels like plastic?

Just like the title says. If I tap the back of my S8+ with my fingernail, it sure as hell doesn't feel like glass.
Anyone else agree?
Noup it's glass, your tap test is useless, since it has more to do with what's behind the glass and how it is placed in the case.
Here's a scratch test, that will tell you what it is actually made of (different materials scratch at different pick hardness. In simple words. You can't scratch glass with paper):
https://youtu.be/w_dTXKhFWtE
When I tap near the top or bottom edge, the sound is somehow firmer, than when I tap in the middle? There it's just plasticky, or hollow inside. Is it normal, or is it just mine? It's making me crazy, and for the life of me I can't find a video or anyone talking about it.
Thanks in advance,

Thanks for that. I bought it five days ago, and never paid much attention, until I heard that my broken Xiaomi Mi5 sounds firmer on the back glass than a 700€ Samsung. I'm taking it tomorrow back, and asking to show me another example of it. If it's the same, I'll be really disappointed at Samsung. Not because it really matters, but because at that price point things like that just shouldn't exist. Man I am annoyed....

I get your meaning and I appreciate it. And I would wholeheartedly agree with you, if not for the fact that a plastic J5 that I use for work sounds firmer and better/fuller than S8 on the back, and it's a floating piece of real plastic attached only at the edges as well. In fact, I'd rather expect J5 to survive submerging than this one. The screen feels like glass, the back does not. The problem is that I think it wasn't that pronounced when I first unboxed it. I can't be sure however.
On the other hand, I definitely want a 700€ feel on a 700€ phone. This is not being spoiled, it's that If I'm paying for the S8 for the next 6 months, i want an S8 and not Xiaomi. In other words, i want to feel happy that I spent 700€, I don't want to feel tricked.
So, here it is what i mean. The sound can't be heard very well because of the lousy J5 camera, but the wobbling is clearly seen.
Is it everyone's that wobbles this much in the middle or just mine?

I have the s8+ and i do not have this wobble you mention. tapping shows it seems hollow around the centre but i expect this as the back glass is secured around the edges where it is solid. It's the same with my s6.

Oh wow. I retract what I said. Mine is very sturdy compared to that. No wobble at all. Just seems "less solid than a solid ingot of glass". I can kinda hear a bit of hollow space behind the glass, but that's stretching it.
Yours seems defective. Very much so.
Sent from my SM-G950F using Tapatalk
yeah yours is definitely not right. there is no give in mine at all. it sounds hollow in the middle but that is all. return yours
Yeah, today's exactly 7th day since I got it. I'll have to do it tomorrow because of work, and it's gonna be a darn ordeal convincing Telenor that it's a defect.
The procedure is they'll send it to a certified repair service, I'll get some junk replacement and probably gonna get it back 2 weeks from now at best. I'll have to see if I'm able to pull some strings so that I at least get a new device afterwards and not the "here we repaired it" same one, as my company is one of their important (lol) clients.
"Certified service partners" are very protected here, as opposed to consumers.
I'd like to have with me an example of a proper one, though. Or a video...
A question. Our company's technician says that he saw all the tests about s8 as he wants to buy it, and that the back glass has to be bendable, so that in case of breaking it doesn't shatter to pieces, but remains composite. It sounds plausible enough, but why the screen is not as bendable as the back, it's the same G5 glass?
Could it be that you guys check on different lighting conditions if it bends a bit? In the video I made I barely pressed the back at all.
I don't want to go through the whole return procedure just to get it back with the same explanation. It would mean a lot to me.
Thanks in advance
I had the silver one and it was for sure glass but now I have the all black and im pretty sure it's plastic

There is no way I assure you if its a legit device it was glass That is part of the advertisement specs and all.Only option was sprint was selling clones or it was a refurb with a aftermarket back witch is highly unlikely as even Company's like Assurion use glass backs
Now the glass will have some flex to it not much I wouldn't suggest bending or such.
If its not real glass its either been replaced or said above

U11 falen from 50 cm Front Glas cracked :(

Hello,
Yesterday my U11 is falen from 50 cm on the wood flor. Its falen straight on the left top corner and cracked the front glass!
The U 11 was in the standart HTC Cover.
I think the round Display frame is very very very sensible
Havend had tis in 6 years of HTC Phones HTC One, One X, One M7 and One M9.
All the phones are alive today with no big damage!
But U11 breaks new record 8 Days old and Screan cracked!
So be careful with your U111!!!!!

No they don't. Not for the U11.
And this is why I don't like the current trend with the bezel-less and curved screens. Easier to break.
Oeps.... That's sorry to hear...

Ouch! I guess that's kinda the standard price since it's repaired by the manufacturer itself.
Btw, what cause your phone to crack near the earpiece anyway?
Nothing surprise. My friend cracked his Huawei p9 screen dropping from toilet height, with a slim silicon case attached. Smart phones are very fragile especially when the shell is all glasses.
This is why I don't use any new phone as a daily runner, until I get a thick protection case, and a thick screen protector.
