Nexus 6p not updating (Verizon) - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've had my Nexus 6p for 1 week and I have not received any OTA update notifications. I'm still running MDA89D (latest is MDB08M??)
I'm on Verizon (with a sim from my Note 4) and have not done any modifications to the phone yet (bootloader, root, etc)
Am I being too impatient? According to the factory images page, (https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images?hl=en) I'm already 3 releases behind??

Same for me, however I had to go get a new nano Sim from the Verizon store. I'm also not rooted/unlocked and have not received one update.

2 phones here (one for me, one for my wife). Mine received an update but hers did not. Interestingly enough, however, mine was up and running without the sim card in it for a while prior to putting it in...I just don't understand how Verizon could be blocking anything...I mean the update comes through Google, not Verizon.
Maybe if there's continued reports of it I'll try stealing my wife's phone and removing the sim card to see if it immediately then gets an update. Sure is odd...

Interesting. My nephew got his update the day he got the phone. He was running only on wireless because he did not have his Verizon sim card yet. I'm going to try pulling my sim and leaving it on wireless a while. I'll report back if I find anything interesting. Thanks!!

I completely set up my 6p on wifi for a day before getting my nano Sim installed, so no update for me in that respect either.

Definitely some interesting results here. However, the nexus' updates are different in that OEM's and carriers are kind of "cut out" of the loop....the updates come from Google unless I'm completely missing something. So, my guess would be that maybe, like most updates in general, Google releases them in waves based off SN or IMEI numbers or whatever. I would say chances are good that in the next week or 2 it's hit a lot more devices. Time will tell!

I've been on wifi only since I've gotten my 6p two days ago and no update here. @ohlin5 might be right.

I haven't inserted vz sim yet at all. I received K update at first boot and then M update next day.

I am a bit confused because the help page from Google about system updates mentions that updates should come within 2 weeks of release, but could take longer depending on your carrier.
Not sure if my screenshot image is uploading or not. The quote from the help page is,
"Android updates: Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 7, Nexus 9, and Nexus 10 devices get the latest version of Android directly from Google. These devices will receive Android version updates for at least two years from when the device first became available on the Google Store.
Once an update is available, it can take up to two weeks for it to reach your device. Based on your carrier, it may take longer than two weeks after release to get an update."
So is Verizon involved or not? It's very confusing. And a bit disappointing to be so far behind on releases for a new Nexus. I've had my 6P for 5 days now on Verizon, but no update for me either. Still on MDA89D.

That's interesting....I wonder if it maybe has something to do with an update needing to be approved by a carrier, first? I honestly don't know that much about the process...I'm not sure if it just comes straight from Google, goes from Google to carriers for carrier certification and THEN Google ships it to those phones on that carrier, or if it just gets passed to the carrier and on to the phones on that carrier from the carrier themselves. Long story short it once again confirms that no wireless company sucks worse than Verizon. I suppose I should be happy that I even have a nexus with them but I can't bring myself to be grateful for them. Has anyone who hasn't gotten an update tried pulling your sim card and booting the phone up after that to see if it triggers any updates to come through? I feel like that information might help in troubleshooting.

I tried pulling the sim and rebooting but still no update.

So ive had mine on Verizon for a week now from the moment i turned it on. I didn't know there was any updated available and i have been waiting for Wug NRT to update his toolkit for the N6P. i just noticed he did about an hour ago unlocked my bootloader and when it powered back up it had an update so i accepted it and when it rebooted im now running MDB08L ?! I haven't seen this version and on the Wug toolkit there is no option for it. Is this maybe an official build for Verizon? Has anyone else see this version or are running it on there device?

I had my 64 gb for a few days only on wifi and never had an update either

Never had an update either after two weeks with both the 5x and the 6p on Verizon. Ended up flashing the factory images myself since it is a nexus after all ☺

I've had mine for a few days now with no update...on Fi! I'm sure it's just Google staggering the deployment. For some reason, I always seem to be at the tail end of the staggering.

No Verizon doesn't build it's all Google. I believe the current complete build is K.
OTA Updates L & M I believe are the new Monthly Security Updates. (Update site doesen't include info on update content)
As L & M were released on same day expect to got from D to K to M.
That's what I think I know anyway. lol

It's an algorithm based on IMEI. You'll get it eventually. The carrier doesn't have anything to do with it.
I will agree it seems to be taking longer this time than usual and I usually got them late on my N5. I'm still on old build as well.

Actually the carrier does have something to do with it. They have to approve updates for phones on their networks, even if there is nothing for them to do with it. Better off just flashing them through twrp.

Will it update???

Ok i just ordered a nexus one unlocked and i was wondering, Will i receive updates OTA from Google? I live in the middle east.
Help
I don't see why you wouldn't.
Most people say that the carrier T-mobile or others have released a update..they never say google has released an update
With it being an unlocked phone, I don't think it's going to matter which carrier you're on, it'll just be pushed directly to the phone.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Or should i root the nexus one and stick with custom ROMs, i did it with my G1 but i'm afraid it will get bricked! and then i have to spend 528$ on it again.
I believe it will matter which carrier youre on, just as it does for the G1, when you get your update depends on when your carrier pushes it out. However if you root it you can always apply the new roms, which usually come out earlier anyways. Other than that im not sure. It also may be that google will put the updates out for download like htc does.
We didn't buy from a carrier we bought an unlocked phone from google. This is why google made their own phone - because carriers are months late in pushing updates.. if they ever do. It's not analagous to the G1, which had to be sourced via a carrier.
I guess ill just wait until there is a new update and see if my nexus one gets updated, if not then i'm going to root thanks!

Nexus 6 released on Verizon February 26th ?

obviously take this with a huge grain of salt, but just had a live chat with VZW rep to ask about the N6. I do this randomly just to see what kind of (non) answers I get.
However, this dude fired back with an exact date of February 26th. That date is on a Thursday, which is traditionally the day that Verizon launches new phones. Just struck me odd that he had such a specific answer, and went on to say that he had just recently been given the information.
Of course I've tried to live chat again three times since then, and each one of the reps said that they have no information about the N6 lol.
Take it for what it's worth.

I was also informed today and "assured" by a verizon rep (via chat) that they would be getting the Nexus 6 on February 26. They also said that the Samsung Note Edge would be coming out January 8th. I guess that will be the first test of this reps information.
My money is on April 1st.

I can tell you with 100% certainty that the note edge will be released on january 8th for verizon...no word on the nexus 6 for sure but i have also heard february 26th
Eh, i am not going to believe any rep. As far as this goes, i worked for Tmobile and ATT customer support and we where never really told anything ahead of time from everyone else. We where told to keep customers either happy or holding on with the company. It has been a few years ago from that though, so i dont know if that policy has changed. :good:

A poster on Reddit said he was told at a corporate store the same thing. The rep, after looking it up, said the computer was showing February 26th availability.
and i just asked and was told there is no scheduled release. thats pretty far ahead for a release date anyway.
i just asked two reps and i got nothing out of either one of them
I just want VoLTE already on my Nexus. No voice and data simultaneously is a bit annoying and per usual is probably because of Waiting for Verizon release their version.
Nexus 6 currently on Verizon Network
I recently bought the Nexus 6 and is currently running on the Verizon Network. Originally, the local Verizon dealer refused to add the Nexus 6 phone to the network since it was not a "Verizon Phone". My philosophy is, "Never let a multi multi multi billion dollar tech company tell what they cant do". By saying this, I called the Verizon Tier 2 support and they were able to activate the phone from their location bought using the same simcard number that was used from my Note 2 phone. Now, after two days, I was booted off the Verizon network and was told via message that I need to sign back on the Verizon network. After a few days corresponding with tier 2 tech support, the reason for the booting off the system was i was using a new "nano simcard" which resulted in a new simcard number. Originally, they recommended that i find someone with a new Motorola phone and activate my simcard through their phone ( long story) and then re-transfer back to the new simcard for the Nexus 6 to work but that greatly avoided. As a result, my Nexus 6 is currently working without any problems . Lastly, they will have to submit a "DMD Form" to "register" your non-Verizon phone. Hope this helps.

That sounds like too much work and a big hassle just to stay with a carrier. Its reminiscent of when I had Verizon a few year ago.
I wonder if VZW will try to lock down the Nexus and if Google will let them.
Sorry for the newbie question.
When you said you cut the (VZW) Sim card and inserted it, the phone booted up and you started using it as simple as that?

I think China may get the phone before Verizon.

Yes, that simple. I am with VZW. I had a Galaxy S3 with a Micro SIM. I picked up a punch on Amazon (I didn't trust trying to use scissors but many people have success with them) ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FW70ZF6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ).
I got my N6, unlocked it, decrypted it, rooted it, transferred apps via Titanium Backup, and then punched the SIM and moved it from the GS3 to the N6. Booted up and it worked. Have not had any problems at all. *knock* *knock*
A Verizon nexus is NOT a nexus. Is just another fully OEM Verizon locked device.

If bought directly from Verizon.. Yes locked boot loader with modified software/firmware tampered trip counter and of course Verizon proprietary bloatware.
The online chat reps are the worst... If it is really true that VZW will carry it on 2/26 add another one to two months cause of supply issues + VZW tramp stamp time.

ATT confirms all your unlocked N5X are belong to us

This evening I went to the ATT store to get them to swap out my (GoPhone) micro-SIM for a new nano-SIM
Remembering a post over at AP (http://www.androidpolice.com/2015/0...being-withheld-but-it-doesnt-actually-matter/) I asked the guy:
"I've heard that if I put an ATT SIM in my unlocked phone your netwrok will claim the phone as yours and then it'll be on your update schedule and not on Google's updates"
He said "That doesn't seem right, but let me ask" and goes in back.
Then he comes back out with a colleague, who confirms it.
That seems nuts.
Anyone else have this problem? Anyone encounter it on their Nexus 6?
Thoughts?
edit for email sub. doooh!
We can always flash the OTA ourselves even if that does happen. I didn't notice that behavior on my Nexus 5, was it a Nexus 6 only thing?
Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk
I think that is true only of a phone they they carry.... This phone not being sold through att they would never have an update for it
Your first mistake was believing what a clown working at a cell phone store said.
OTA updates are always released by carriers aren't they? In the case of these nexus phones they just don't mess with them I thought.
I'm sure I'm wrong...lol. It just seems like Sprint, for example, always seems to know ahead of time and releases a document about the OTAs.

Carriers deliver their OTAs for phones that they sell and provide support for. But the Nexus OTAs come from teh Google themselves. Some folks were notified of the OTA on the 5x prior to installing a SIM, just being on wifi.
I had the N6 and bought it through AT&T and I can confirm that I never had to wait for an OTA update through the carrier. Those workers in the stores hardly ever know what they're talking about except their own talking points for each new phone to get you to buy it.

This. 99% of them don't even know what a "nexus" is either.
5x / 6p are not carrier phones and have nothing to do with this. You will receive ota's from google directly. Plus its a nexus, most owners are tweaking on their own anyways its why many of us buy this.
The OTA update you receive depends on which SIM card you have in the device. If you don't want a carrier specific OTA, remove your SIM and connect to WiFi when the OTA starts rolling out (assuming you are not on a carrier-specific build already).
Have a look at the Nexus 6 OTA update thread, and you'll see that there were separate builds for T-Mobile, Fi, Sprint, etc. Although unlikely it is possible that Google may not have them for the 5X.

There are three separate downloads for the Nexus 5X already posted on the Google Dev website. They're not labeled like the Nexus 6.

At the end of the day, it makes no difference anyway: all the images are provided and you can choose whichever one you want to flash. There's nothing stopping someone from flashing an AT&T build (if there ends up being one) on a Sprint device or vice-versa.
I found op's post on Google forums. Here's the reply he got
Welcome to the Nexus Help Forum.
Generally if you have a locked phone (i.e. works on a specific carrier like AT&T or Sprint), the AT&T rep is correct. You would be subject to any Android or phone updates from carrier. This is generally the case for recent Nexus locked phones like the Nexus 6 model.
However if you purchased an unlocked phone from the Google Store like the recent Nexus 5X and 6P, you should be able to receive your Android OS OTA updates directly from Google.
Alternatively, you do have the option of flashing a factory image from the Google Developers page directly to your Nexus 6 - thereby skipping the OTA updates from your carrier or Google. Flashing factory images is an option we recommend for users' who've had experience flashing their Android smartphones or tablets before. To find out more about this option, click on the link to the Google Developers website.
Hopefully this answers your question completely.
Regards,
JP

I work at a tmobile store and two of my coworkers are also nexus users and on xda.
So although this may be common, there are exceptions such as my store
OP here. Called Google. They said these guys are mistaken and there's no way they are locking the phone to the network. Even if ATT were delaying the OTA updates for unlocked non-ATT phones, you could still get it over wifi.
As we thought.
Nexus phones receive OTA's from Google directly, not from the carrier.
I don't know if that can be said if you bought your Nexus from the carrier though. I've bought all my Nexus devices directly from Google.

OTA updates for Nexus devices used on Wi-Fi (i.e., used without a SIM card) come from Google. If you have any SIM card in your device, it comes from Google, but via the carrier. So, even if you bought your device from Google's website, your update will come via AT&T if you are using an AT&T SIM. This was figured out with the Nexus 6: those that had bought their device from Google and were using it with a T-Mobile SIM card received a different OTA update than those that bought their device from Google and were using it with an AT&T SIM card, and likewise with those that bought it from Google, but were using it with a Sprint SIM card.
The bottom line is that you will receive the OTA update which updates you to the "best" build for that carrier, if the builds are going to be indeed optimized on the 5X.
In any case though, it does not matter one bit, as the factory images are posted on Google's website, so, if you wish to flash a T-Mobile ROM while you are using a Sprint SIM, by all means, fill your boots.

I still haven't received the March update. The people at the AT&T Corporate store and AT&T customer service didn't even know there was an update that should have been available until I showed them. And then they just scratched their heads and gave the old can response of, "maybe it's being rolled out in stages?" I then asked, "Who can I talk to to find out when I will receive it?" and either they didn't know or they claimed to know...but people were not allowed to talk to them.
So, I'm guessing this update might come out around this time next year from AT&T.
I KNEW I should have bought a T-mobile device and just unlocked to use on AT&T since that's the carrier my family is on.....and yes, i'm still waiting on the March security update. Maybe i'll get that one in June and the April one in Dec. :/

Regardless, the update changed the Baseband Version from APB5 to APC2. The MYAT&T app clearly shows that it should be available. My phone is still on the APB5 baseband and I can not get the update from any method. I have not received an OTA notification, manually checking for it shows me up to date, and Samsung switch tells me no update is available. So an update was released in March but me (and apparently others) can't get it. The only thing I haven't tried in the Samsung Experience at BestBuy.
This is the reason, I am thinking that (at least some people) probably won't see an update from AT&T like the one Tmobile just got for a long time.

AT&T Sim. Everything checks out with the phone and sim. I've talked to AT&T customer service on the phone and brought the phone into a local AT&T corporate retail store and both times they said the phone and account were fine. They also both claimed to not know about any updates until I showed / told them about it. Then, they just scratched their heads and gave me the old, "well...maybe it's just being rolled out in stages?" But neither could tell me who to contact to confirm if that was the case or not. Basically, they are clueless about their own products.

Guessing you can't put your phone into airplane mode, connect a VPN in the US, and download it that way?

Nope... when you check for software updates.. the server checks for the sim before it issues the ota.. if we dont have the carrier sim it simply says your phone doesnt have any updates
anyone gone to best buy's samsung experience kiosk yet to check and see if the April update is available there?

I purchased my S7 at BestBuy about 2 weeks ago and the next day came back to Uruguay(South America). Then I saw online the March 18th update which also updated the baseband.
I tried to update it mannually but as it was mentioned it didn't work because the SIM is not from AT&T.
I have an AT&T SIM card that came with the phone but is not activated, do you think that placing that SIM card in the phone and trying the update will work?
Plane mode also?
I'm starting to get desperate on this phone because when I bought it I didn't know about this AT&T stupid policy about the updates.
Thanks.

Im in the same boat as you are.. i dont think we ll get any updates without at&t activated sim to receive the otas..
The only thing we can do is sideload the ota update from people who have already received the update..
But that means people with s7 edge on at&t should share the ota as soon as they download it without updating it... if they update the phone the phone deletes the update..

if you wanna sideload you'll need to unlock the bootloader. as far as I can tell, the galaxy s7 is locked tight!

correct me if i'm wrong, but I always thought ODIN was for flashing full rom images, not updates. At least when I used it was mostly factory default images that Samsung/ATT already released.

Oh!! I thought we could flash it through odin.. my bad!!
Why is the sammobile site not listing at&t version whereas even the tmobile recent firmware is also listed...
AT&T is one of the carriers notorious for not releasing firmware for developers to tinker with.

So not much hope to get the rom to sideload it, AT&T is the worst... I have already published my S7 on internet, hope to be able to sell it quick and get an 'F' version.
Thanks for your help.
I hate waiting for updates...

Have you received the January update pushed OTA?

Just trying to gauge rate/actuality of this occurring. I haven't yet received an update OTA since getting my Pixel 2 mid October. I finally sideloaded the Dec update, but am intent on waiting to see if the January update ever comes via OTA push.

I received the pushed OTA, though it failed since I have TWRP, Magisk, and Snoke Kernel.
If your impatient just flash the factory image or the OTA.

When did you get it?
And yes, I'm impatient. I'm impatient for it to work like it's supposed to. I don't want to have to sideload updates every month.

I have two Pixel 2 phones. On the second one it came in two days ago.
Google is going to push the OTAs in batches. Other than flashing the Factory Image or OTA I don't know what to tell you other than wait?
Tap the system update button?

Tapping update doesn't help (yet, which has been covered extensively). You answered the question, thanks.
Anyone else?

Yeah I received mine. Bought from VZW. I had just flashed September to roll all the way back. Maybe that's why.
I received the OTA in India..
Anyone captured the OTA link for the P2? As in the 40MB update, not the full OTA you can download from Googles OTA site.
I have still not got the OTA in India..... Google should really fix this.

Don't get it here in Germany.
Gesendet von meinem Pixel 2 mit Tapatalk
My wife's Nexus got it on Cricket (AT&T) my business Pixel got it on AT&T, and my Google store bought pixel2 on Verizon not available yet. This has happened to me ever since I put a Verizon simm in it, was fine on AT&T. Now I give up after 30 days of no OTA and reset phone then it comes in. a real PIA to put all the passwords and accounts back. If it isn't pushed to me by next billing cycle I'm done with Verizon. My belief is since they sell them, when you buy a phone from Google direct and it sees a Verizon simm, it hands over updating to Verizon. Verizon says no, not true, but nobody can explain why then a reboot removes the authentication for Verizon and it OTAs perfect.

I thought maybe you were onto something, so I shut down, removed my Verizon SIM (phone was bought direct from Google), started back up, tried checking for updates a few times, still nothing, rebooted, repeat, still nothing.
I never got a notification to install the January security update. I restarted my phone earlier today and right when it started up I got a notification about finishing system update. Took a look in settings and apparently I now have the January security update. Looks like it downloaded/installed automatically. I am on Verizon with the Unlocked Pixel 2 from the Google Store, I am on build number OPM1.171019.013.
Not sure how this happened. I got a notification and had to manually click "Install" for the December update. Wasn't auto-updates a feature of Oreo they discussed a while back, being able update while the phone is on and when you restart it finishes the update?
At this point, half a week after release, I'd be wary of reading anything into the pattern of who has got it and who hasn't (obviously people who still haven't had previous updates are a different matter). We know that OTAs are released in batches, with very small fraction getting it in first couple of days, then larger but still small fraction, before finally rolling out generally, and it's claimed that it's random who gets it when. With the small number of (self-selecting) replies here I doubt we can make any meaningful test of whether it truly is random.
FWIW I just got it a few minutes ago (restarted and the notification popped up). UK, non-carrier model. Remarkable how long a very small update takes to install though...
Just received the update! So random...
I just downloaded the 48 megabyte January security patch via OTA download to my Pixel 2 purchased from Google. It took a really long time to install, like at least 30 minutes. This may be why people that sideloaded the OTA had a slow down while setup processes were running in the background, after the update my phone is just as snappy as ever.
Got mine today, though while I happened to be on a wifi network that was identifying my location as Mountain View, as opposed to Portland where I actually am...

I should have said "factory refresh", not reboot. pulling simm never worked either. Yesterday it came in, FIRST TIME EVER since owning Pixel 2 on Verizon. Curious though, it NEVER notified an update was available, nor that it had downloaded one, I had simple rebooted my phone and told me installing an update. Never let me refuse it or delay it. Weird.

Except this doesn't apply if you rooted your phone, which is the case for most of xda's pixel 2 userbase
