Z5 adaptive brightness :( - Xperia Z5 General

Hi,
Coming from a Z3, I am disappointed by the adaptive brigthness. Whereas it used to work nicely on the Z3 (set up to 30%), on the Z5, with the same setting, the brightness turns to the minimum when the phone is used indoor with artificial lighting, so bad...
Anobody else experienced that ?

I think the screen is pretty bright with adaptive brightness on I had to run brightness to 40%, I'm using the latest generic ce5 firmware

Wanted to check how my Z1 faired against the Z5 and I noticed adaptive brightness and even the drop down slider didn't work. Had to toggle it off and on to get it to adjust but otherwise it's about the same brightness as my Z1 but with better colours.

Z5 also seems to be colder (blue) but not really evident from the photo

Yeah, it's not that good...

Coming from a note 4 I think brightness is good, it's brighter on the z5

The brightness is fine all the day long (30%, adaptive on). It's only coming home at night (or anywhere with average light like a restaurant), the brightness turns to be too low. Thus the screen is not flattering anymore at all...

[REQ] Lowering the minimum brightness

When I put the brightness slider in settings all the way down, it still seems pretty bright. That is still pretty bright especially in a dark room. Beautiful brightness widget reports that the current minimum is 11%. From doing a little reaserch, I know that the absolute lowest level that the backlight can run is at 3%, and that in some hero roms the lowest you can set it to is 6%. Does anyone know which files control brightness? I am sure that we can get the screen running at least 5% lower but I need some help figuring out what to change. BTW, I am running CM5T7. Long live XDA!

efficiency of ambient display, adaptive brightness and black ui on Amoled

hey, i want to know if these 3 features drain battery or aid in better battery life
ambient display - i know it's an amoled so only few pixels are turned on, but what i want to know is do people face a much better battery life with this feature turned on and by that i mean like a significant difference, same with adaptive brightness as compared to toggling it yourself. And lastly black color on amoled screens, how much difference in battery life can you get approximately by using a black ui throughout, like 10% or 25% ?
the battery improvements are not noticeable. even in a full black background, but that's just my experience.

Honestly, the gains in battery life from using a black background would be pretty small in my opinion. I don't see how using ambient display would save any battery at all, as opposed to what? The biggest gain would be adjusting brightness manually instead of using adaptive brightness, adaptive brightness can be pretty heavy on the sensors.

I'm trying to compare ambient display to constantly unlocking the phone to check for the time or notifications

In that case I believe using ambient display would be the best option.

Auto brightness erratic

Has anyone noticed the auto brightness feature isn't as accurate as others? I feel like the brightness slider especially is not linear. The first 30 percent of the bar contains a lot while the next 70 is only slight increments.
It also acts weird when it's supposed to increase brightness but the screen stays dim. It's not quick to refocus itself. The sensor definitely isn't as accurate as my S7 Edge.
It's more accurate than my 6p. No issues for me.

Minimum brightness

You don't want to give your significant other yet another reason to yell at you while you're reading XDA in bed. Rate this thread to express what you think of the Motorola One Action's display minimum dimness. A higher rating indicates that the display can get extremely dim, ideal for reading in very dark environments.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Hello, I have recently bought the Motorola One Action at Amazon Spain and I really love the phone except that I find the screen brightness to be very low and dark. When comparing it to other phones it only becomes more obvious that the brightness is super-low. The phone only has an acceptable brightness at 100% and I don't think that's normal. I read on various websites that the brightness of the phone with full white screen and with Max brightness should be 459 cd/m² and while testing it with the light meter I'm getting 360 cd/m²; at maximum... Is it possible that I got a defective unit? Could it be a software issue?

Did u try to disable the adaptive brightness?
Yes, it is disabled.
In my opinion Minimal brightness is way too high. Cant complain about maximum brightness.
I also bought from Amazon Spain and the same problem. What was your solution if I may ask?
Perhaps everything could be solved with a custom rom
Running EvokutionX GSI and minimum brightness is perfect. Looks like Moto is restricting this on official firmware for reasons unknown...
guess we need a maximum brightness thread also. I live in the sunshine state, and find almost all phones aren't bright enough on a full sun day. This one included. But, as far as the minimum brightness is concerned, it is quite acceptable even in the darkest room. I do run the dark mode also.

Display not that bright on a clear/ sunny bright day at high noon?

I have been playing with the brightness levels, adaptive, etc, etc, etc and I have noticed that my Note 8 is brighter or "easier to read" on a bright sunny day.... Anyone else notice that this screen isn't cutting it or is hard to read when the ambient light is really bright?
Exactly the same observation from me. The Note 8 display is definitely better.
Is it only with auto brightness? I'm wondering if they made the lighting less aggressive to help battery life with the 120Hz screen and all.
In manual mode, maxed out brightness, the Note20 Ultra should smoke your Note8.

With adaptive brightness on it is brighter than the Note 8 (both phones sitting with a torch shone in the sensors) however in normal use on full brightness the Note 8 is definitely better.
I feel they limited the max manual brightness on the Note 20, probably for battery life and to prevent damage/burn in with the display.

I just played with a Note9 and the Note20 Ultra was CLEARLY brighter in manual mode at max brightness. It wasn't even a competition. So I doubt the Note8 would fare any better. I wonder if yours has an issue of some sort.
heads up, you may have to first activate "Performance Mode" under the battery settings. Once you apply there is also an option to keep brightness neutral, add 5% or 10%. As a Note 8 user remember activating this long ago then reverted back to "Optimized" while keeping the brightness as is.
