efficiency of ambient display, adaptive brightness and black ui on Amoled - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey, i want to know if these 3 features drain battery or aid in better battery life
ambient display - i know it's an amoled so only few pixels are turned on, but what i want to know is do people face a much better battery life with this feature turned on and by that i mean like a significant difference, same with adaptive brightness as compared to toggling it yourself. And lastly black color on amoled screens, how much difference in battery life can you get approximately by using a black ui throughout, like 10% or 25% ?

the battery improvements are not noticeable. even in a full black background, but that's just my experience.

Honestly, the gains in battery life from using a black background would be pretty small in my opinion. I don't see how using ambient display would save any battery at all, as opposed to what? The biggest gain would be adjusting brightness manually instead of using adaptive brightness, adaptive brightness can be pretty heavy on the sensors.

I'm trying to compare ambient display to constantly unlocking the phone to check for the time or notifications

In that case I believe using ambient display would be the best option.

cm7.02 Turn off Automatic brightness may improve battery life! It works for me!

I did a comparison test between Auto brightness On and OFF. Both time have wiped battery state to just make sure it wasn't the wipe that improved battery life.
no widgets were placed, google services were up all time.
cellphone signal were pretty good. 3G all the time. -70dbm~-80dbm, sometimes was -65.
Under the same usage, I managed to get extra 20% of battery left for my phone with Auto brightness off.
Anyone wants to try this?
btw my screen brightness was set 50%, so i'm not cheating
Most people already knows about this. if you want to save the battery turn off the auto brightness

I usually run all my devices at 25% brightness. Then again, I only ever need a phone to last about 11 hours at a time.

maybe is a software issue so that the sensor is ON all the time and using the cpu to calculate the ambient light condition?

I think the main issue, is that auto brightness sets the brightness too high for most conditions (at least in terms of usability vs. battery life). I keep mine at 35% most the time.
And this has nothing to do with CM7 in particular, this is true on any ROM, including stock.

dark theme on Note 4

I just bought a Note 4 and i would like to know if someone knows how to put a black theme on the stock ROM
Because its a OLED display this will improve battery performance right?
Its my only anoying thig right now, i have come from a Note 3 and still dont see any improve on battery life
Its true on these screens any white or colour will use up more power to make the screen vivid to the eye.
I personally have a black screen with a bombay cat eyes in full hd.
I think it depends upon how you use your screen as watching a vid or you tube will show the screen usage as high.
I have mine set on Auto brightness and this makes a big improvement of battery usage.
One bug I have found is certain apps make my screen brighter so when I switch to another app or function sometimes my screen is too bright until I go back to the Auto brightness setting and press it again to dim the screen. But I'm getting use to closing all apps after being on the phone to muck around.
Guess the multi app screens benifits outweight the extra power used to keep them on in stanby mode!
I still have 10% battery after a full day of use. You should go to the battery thread somewhere in here lots of tips and tricks to get the battery into saving mode without actually using the battery saving mode LOL!
TBF what makes me chuckle is I rekcon 90% of people who have battery issues is because of chargers, cables and bad batterys after all they are massed produced.
If I have any issues concerning hardware I just give samsung a ring and work it out as they are more willing to trying replacing batteries. cables and chargers first than getting the device back?

Immense battery drain with the screen on

The battery on this phone is generally good, but some things drain the battery more than I think they should. Standby drain is great (3-5% overnight) but the screen murders the battery. It drops 1% every 4-5 minutes of light tasks such as browsing social media and Chrome, but the drain gets much worse with anything that's more demanding on the processor. For example, 23 minutes of gaming on my PS1 emulator killed 10% of battery, and just 13 minutes of Crossy Road killed 6%.
Is there any way to improve battery life when the screen is on, or is this normal power consumption for a 2k display like this one? For reference, I have it set on auto brightness at the lowest setting to save battery already. Also, my phone gets 4-5 hrs SOT with moderate usage and maybe 30min-1hr of gaming. If it's the latter, I'd take a 1080p screen any day for better battery life...

I said I already have it set on auto brightness at the lowest setting
Turn off auto brightness. Other than that, the screen is going to draw a fixed amount of power. Also, resolution has very little to do with how much power the screen uses, it's all panel size and brightness.

Pretty much the only knob you have is display brightness.

I thought resolution has everything to do with how much power the screen uses? The way I understood it a screen with a given resolution has the same amount of pixels whether it's 5.5" or 5.7" or some other size, hence phones with different size screens but the same resolution having different PPI's.

I turn it on only when I'm outside. Aside from affecting power draw due to brightness, does auto brightness also draw extra battery from having to operate the light sensor constantly as well?
Other than that, I've already been doing everything you guys have suggested. Do you all experience the same type of drain that I do?
The backlight is the primary power user in the screen. It doesn't care if there is 1 pixel or 5 million. The GPU will use more power at higher resolutions, but a 5.5" FHD screen will use nearly the same power as a 5.5" 4K screen.

But OLED displays such as the one on the Turbo 2 don't have backlights, so the higher the resolution, the more pixels the battery has to light up and the more it drains the battery?
The pixels are smaller, and there is less power use per pixel than on a lower resolution display. Will it drain more power? Yes, but the amount is likely negligible.
What I would recommend
I know a little about a lot, When it comes to Android phones and phones in general,
The auto brightness feature always has an effect on battery life I always tell people it is much better to set this manually and to change it when it's needed. Also more modern phone os's allow this setting to be toggled quite easily. As to what screen panel uses more power I don't know a lot about that but I would have to agree with the idea that the higher the resolution the more power it draws. Good luck to you and hopefully we see marshmallow soon around the globe!
Okay. I've also noticed that the screen drains power a lot slower once battery level is below 30%. Has anyone else experienced this? Regardless, I'll calibrate my battery today and report back if it makes any difference or not.
You could also try Lux, it has a lot more options when it comes to auto adjusting the screen.

Fhd+ or Wqhd+?

Which option are you using guys on a daily basis?
Thanks :good:

Was trying different settings but can't really see the huge difference if any.
WQHD+ using the best resolution this phone can offer.lol
WQHD+
Haha, I'm using hd+. The battery life is great and honestly can't tell the difference between hd+ and fhd+.

You're blind
wqhd+ has the hit to battery life is very small If at all.
I use WQHD+. Anything lower and you can see the visible difference in quality. And there's no difference in battery.

There's negligible difference in battery.
Wouldnt WQHD+ cause lag in some games?
FHD+ I have no need for anything higher really.
Perfectly fine resolution and less of an impact on the GPU which offers more battery life, noticeable or not,
WQHD+
I tried FHD+ twice and it only gave me about 1-1.5 hours more of SOT. I also didn't like how the text looked fuzzy. With WQHD+ I already get 5-6 hours of SOT with 20-30% remaining before I go to bed and charge it.
I use fhd, although on heavy video session I switch to wqhd, the thing is fhd drops less frames than wqhd, so for day to day usage and multitasking fhd will be smoother and certain UI elements will load faster because of the less required pixels, yes it is a very small difference, milliseconds, but I like the speedy feeling, and the battery is a tiny bit better
I use WQHD+, according to http://www.anandtech.com/show/11540/samsung-galaxy-s8-exynos-versus-snapdragon/5
The S8’s settings menu offers a choice between several preset performance modes that affect sound quality, screen brightness, and screen resolution, among other things. For the results shown in the charts above, the S8s used the default “Optimized” setting that reduces the screen resolution to FHD+ (2220x1080). Running the PCMark battery test at its highest WQHD+ (2960x1440) setting has no appreciable affect on battery life, however, regardless of SoC.

Display not that bright on a clear/ sunny bright day at high noon?

I have been playing with the brightness levels, adaptive, etc, etc, etc and I have noticed that my Note 8 is brighter or "easier to read" on a bright sunny day.... Anyone else notice that this screen isn't cutting it or is hard to read when the ambient light is really bright?
Exactly the same observation from me. The Note 8 display is definitely better.
Is it only with auto brightness? I'm wondering if they made the lighting less aggressive to help battery life with the 120Hz screen and all.
In manual mode, maxed out brightness, the Note20 Ultra should smoke your Note8.

With adaptive brightness on it is brighter than the Note 8 (both phones sitting with a torch shone in the sensors) however in normal use on full brightness the Note 8 is definitely better.
I feel they limited the max manual brightness on the Note 20, probably for battery life and to prevent damage/burn in with the display.

I just played with a Note9 and the Note20 Ultra was CLEARLY brighter in manual mode at max brightness. It wasn't even a competition. So I doubt the Note8 would fare any better. I wonder if yours has an issue of some sort.
heads up, you may have to first activate "Performance Mode" under the battery settings. Once you apply there is also an option to keep brightness neutral, add 5% or 10%. As a Note 8 user remember activating this long ago then reverted back to "Optimized" while keeping the brightness as is.
