Removing Play Store & Services / Gapps - BlackBerry Priv

Like many now, I want to avoid Google's services for privacy reasons, and use CM / PA / other ROMs without anything Googly installed.
Thus the Priv is only an option for me if I can completely strip everything Google out of it. Priv is supposed to stand for privacy, but sharing everything with Google isn't very private ....
I have a bad feeling that there'll be no option whatsoever to do this. Also, it looks like the phone uses Google's phone and messaging apps, so I assume core BB services rely on those and therefore Play / Gapps ...
Then of course there's the dark cloud that a heavily locked down bootloader / difficult root access may cast.
Anyone have any thoughts?

Google probably already has all your information, i'm sorry...it's too late

If it lives up to what it is supposed to then it will be completely locked down with no aosp based options. Also as all the stuff will be tied to blackberries servers even if you did manage to unlock it you might find a device that is useless

Only BBM goes through the BlackBerry servers now, unless you're using it on a BES exchange.

Yeah, I'm in the same boat. I think it's a "wait and see" type of situation where we have to see if someone with the knowhow is able to root it and go from there.
Like Zel said, probably won't get custom roms, due to the advertised features of the device but I'm hoping, at the very least, the phone is successful and other OEMs start taking physical keyboarded devices seriously and make decent phones with them like they did when android was young. Could you imagine if Samsung, for example, made a GS7 variant that took physical keyboards as seriously as the note series takes big screens & wacom pens?

I think Priv will come with 2 OSes loaded, and you are prompted from the first boot to choose your preferred OS. So just choose BB10
Or go with Passport or classic, really good phone

This will not be an option. This would remove all the security that BB will depend on. I mean BB will most likely even use hardware crypto keys as well as the new security from qualcom that will refuse to boot if it detects system changes.

That is odd indeed. As this would bypass all the security that BB has worked very hard to come up with. Ill have to look into this more. The only devices that I know that dual boot are Asia based knock offs.
Thanks for the info will dig in and ping a few people about this.

Sure things no problem
But in fact I think this will do no harm, as the choice is permanent: You get to choose 1, and to stick with it till you factory reset the phone. In some phones (eg, for the gov or firms) you only get BB10 or android, in commercial edition you get both, but only use 1 at a time

I'm pretty sure that OS selection theory was well debunked in the Crackberry forums. People looked at that Passport image, and if you look closely at that switch to Android button, it doesn't quite have the right dimensions or separation from the other setting buttons.

The dual boot BB10/Android dream was just that... a dream. It only existed in photoshop, not in the real world.

Still I do hope of BB10 on Priv. For my needs BB10 is perfectly fine

Sorry this is absolute fantasy - it's an android phone running 5.1 - Google never has and never will sign off on a dual-boot. There is no dual-boot, no hypervisor - it's a virtually stock android device with a few interesting hardware features, some Blackberry specific software and that's it. BB10 doesn't even support the resolution of the screen and all work beyond security patches has finished on that OS.

Can it be done? Yes. It could be done. The question at hand us will it be done. To be honest I wouldn't give it better then a 5% chance off it happening. If it even does it will be an Asia based knock off running Android and what ever.

Peace of mind when you can't find your phone
HTCSense.com is the first place to turn when you reach for your phone and it's not there.
If this happens, just go to HTCSense.com and use it to make your phone ring… loudly… even it’s set to vibrate. Hopefully it's nearby - buried in the sofa or under a stack of papers. Sorted.
Another option is to use HTCSense.com to locate your phone and see where it is on the map – literally. If you see that it is still in the cafe you left 20 minutes ago, use HTCSense.com to lock it and to forward all your calls to a different number. You can even post a reward message to show up on your locked screen in case a stranger finds it. Sorted.
And in the worst case – if you see that your phone is someplace that it definitely should not be (like the train tracks headed out of town), use HTCSense.com to lock it and erase all the personal data from it. Sorted!
Hold on to your memories
HTCSense.com holds on to all the text messages you send or receive. That way, you can go back in time to easily find that special message. And because this history holds special memories or addresses of some unforgettable spots, HTCSense.com keeps it available even if you get a new phone. And to make your life easier while you’re at your home or office computer, you can receive and send SMS messages without even touching your phone.
Manage your contacts – comfortably
HTCSense.com makes it easier than ever to add pics from your computer for all the friends on your phone. And of course, you can add new friends and their details to your phone via your computer, as well. And if you want to keep family separate from your work colleagues – you can use HTCSense.com to create handy groups of contacts. All this is done with great ease on the big screen and spacious keyboard of your computer.
Discover new places - grab your phone and go
Keeping track of what you've done and where you've been - plus adding what you'd like to go and see - is easy on HTCSense.com with Footprints. Use the integrated Google Maps and your computer to create Footprints of the cool spots you want to see. And voila! All the Footprints you create will appear on your phone. Now, your phone can help you find your way to that cool Café or that hidden jazz bar.
Discover fun, useful and trusted apps
Do you love to make your phone more fun and useful? Then HTCSense.com is the place for you! You will find a large selection of HTC tested and reviewed apps that you can install with confideeeeence! So come on down and try it out!
Share cool apps with friends
HTCSense.com gives you a handy way to recommend apps you've tried and think others will appreciate. You also see what your friends suggest you try. What better way to gain social kudos than by telling each other what’s new and cool?
Make it yours
Make your phone look and sound in a way that is all you. Choose from hundreds of cool wallpapers and a wide selection of sound-sets, scenes and useful (and sometimes just fun) widgets. Want to update your style? Return to HTCSense.com and change your phone’s personality as often as you like.

Yes, but the Desire is a different phone entirely, one that's mostly a Nexus One. ACG (Mine included) carriers are starting to sell the Desire. It's tempting to upgrade and get that 1ghz snapdragon goodness, but the CDMA desire rooting and rom scene is pretty bad at the moment and I would hate to be stuck with a stock/unrootable phone for even a day.
http://www.alaskacommunications.com/Shop/Phones/Desire.aspx
The part about all your SMS being on the website is kind of unnerving. I don't feel right about a 3rd party having my txt messages, that's equal to having recordings of calls since I txt more than I use voice.
I'm having issues with the website and my Desire HD. Basically there is no way to scroll down through your contacts, texts, numbers, missed calls etc...
Anyone else experiencing this?

Reverse USB Tethering on G3 - A solution ! (?)

It has been acknowledged by many that Reverse USB Tethering is an essential feature missing in the Android OS, atleast natively. Several processes have been attempted but none of them is sure-shot and certainly not noob friendly.
However, while browsing through random sites i came across
Code:
[URL="http://www.codeproject.com/kb/android/usbportforwarding.aspx?fid=1625023&df=90&mpp=10&sort=Position&tid=3900438"]THIS LINK[/URL]
which "seemed" to be an easy solution. I did attempt it but was unsuccessful. I expect the advanced users to have a bit more insight into this and they would like to post their views after attempting it
P.S. - Please remember that we are talking only about sharing a PC internet connection via USB to an Android mobile aka REVERSE USB TETHERING so please do not mix this with "Conventional" USB Tethering
Yeah it is pointless you can easily use wifi
Sent from my GT-I5800 using XDA App
..the point of this is to get your computer's internet connection to your mobile, It's very useful for people who haven't got wifi at home or a packet data plan..
Visualise this -
Someone has a old desktop PC at work or home which doesnt have a wi-fi card. What it does have is a hi-speed unlimited LAN connection. On the other hand he only has a G3 with no 3G or Wi-fi access. Only a barely sustainable 2G data connection.
Now u see the usefulness of this project ? Not everyone is lucky enough to have a wi-fi hotspot near them or create an ad-hoc wifi with the above configutation
Downloading applications for your phone can be pretty tricky without any internet connection, or it can be pretty expensive if you have to pay for the data you receive. Whilist you can find some apk's from the net, you need to have access to market to get the more 'unknown' apps that no-one has uploaded to the web.
I myself was looking for a solution like this for a long time, but then I bought myself a 256kb\s data plan which costs 5€\month
Yeah, like I said, some apps are in the web, but rarely those not-so-popular ones. That's why market is essential, and this reverse usb-tethering a perfect solution for some users..
To expand on Thom47's views suppose i have to update Google Maps, can you imagine the time it would take over a conventional 2G network where data connection keeps dropping often ? You could argue that updated Google Maps app can be downloaded and pushed to phone for replacing the outdated version. But in this case Google Maps was just an example.
And where i live, Wireless Routers cost atleast $20 or more (not sure about the exchange rate). Kinda pointless to install one if its needed only for a phone. Considering that i already have access to a decent LAN a USB cable seems to be the most viable option...

just get any cheap wifi router
netgears is cheap and works fine
u can always use ur PC even w/o te wifi card in it by a cable
wifi is much more better and freedom u will gain plenty of other options like SSH file sharing etc which u wont have in reverse tethering
u would be only saving 1200-1300 Rs (INR) by that which if u buy saving ur pocket money will pay u back sooner than later
i had similar problem earlier now i wonder why to turn on the PC
Hi,
If you can use linux, this can be done easily.
http://www.linuxreaders.com/2011/03/android-access-internet-from-computer-via-usb.html
As usual, u miss my point.....
AFAIK, its not decreed anywhere that u have to use your cell only when u r sitting next to a PC. I could update the files / programs and use it elsewhere too. Do you know the size of Swype beta full language file ? Have u ever tried to download it via 2G ? Regarding the consideration of buying a cheaper phone we can also tie a string to two empty match boxes for communication and that would be much cheaper. Unfortunately it wouldnt serve my purpose. I just wanted a way to update my apps / programs quickly once a day or week so that I could use them later. Its not like I wanna use my cell to download stock ROMs or even larger files. There are other numerous examples I could give but it isnt gonna change either of our viewpoints.
@dpthakar - thank you for your suggestion. Did know bout the linux solution but its supposed to run only on Win 7. I prefer my Win XP PC but I will probably have to run it in VM if all else fails.
clarkov some people needs it because you can update your android apps and surf the android market using that shared pc connetion.

Since I am using this service from day one, but i have never read a word regarding this on XDA forum. so writing a guide who are not aware to this service.
Priorly with SGS i have tried, but was not available to my country(india), but this time with Note we are lucky.
To activate this service
First Go here
http://samsungdive.com
and register your account(free)
- Now on mobile go to setting-Location n security - Find My mobile
1.check SIM card change alert
2.click on alert msg recipient - Now login with credential, you have register on above mentioned samsung site. - and add recipient mobile number (your other number / family number) on which you will get notification, if SIM will changed.
3.check Remote control
Now when you visit samsungdive.com n login, you will see your register device there, (see Image above)

-Ring mobile (to find device in nearby location)
-Forward msgs
-call logs
-wipe out device etc
Hope it will be useful to G-Note user.
I didn't know about this! Thanks!
Samsung Dive is an excellent tool.
it also helps with few other things.
The other day i misplaced my note under my desk and i went online and made it ring( it rings even in silent mode )
Sounds great! I will have to check this out. I have been using SeekDroid since it came out, but this might be a more fool proof way, since I have had issues with Seekdroid while running practice tests. Thanks!
Doesn't seem to work in the US. Saying my ZIP is not enough digits and I don't see the setting on the phone menu to "find my mobile."
Edit: nevermind, deleted the optional address information. Still not working yet...added +10000000000 (0's are my phone number) since I'm in the US....
Edit 2: I previously had a SGSII on my Samsung account. Perhaps it's trying to locate that device (hehe, the new owner is probably panicking).
How can I delete that device and add my Note?
Edit 3: Nevermind, figured out how to add the Note here:

Doesn't say how to delete a device I no longer own though....

I factory reset it so it had to be disabled as the phone re-formatted.

Android Wear for Ticwatch 2 possible?

Heya!
So as the title states, is/will it be possible to port Android Wear (maybe even Wear 2) over to the Ticwatch 2? Since the watch runs Ticwear OS which is based on Android we should have all the blobs/drivers available to run the same Android Wear version on the watch itself or am I wrong here?
Thanks already!
Hi all, I got my Ticwatch 2 today and I'm also interested in the possibilities. Anyone?

My Onyx just arrived. Check Kickstarter updates, they have a query page where you can enter your email and it spits out your DHL tracking number.
Furthermore, I'd absolutely love to turn this gorgeous, well crafted piece of hardware into a fully fledged Android Wear device.
Hope someone can!
I really hope someone can get it to work as well.

Ah well, still says "Final packaging" for me
I have a Snow and Onyx and am happy to help
Getting AW and or AW2 compatibility would be huge for this, a whole new rom... that might be a stretch but this place has had me hacking away at android for 4-5 years now at least, game on.
LGSONE
Anyone up for a TW2 subforum?
Maybe we could find some dedicated developers to get stuff going if we had one !

No, that's for the Ticwatch 1, not for the Ticwatch 2!

Oops, I did not read closely, just saw the Ticwatch and knew there was a thread. More coffee needed!
I would kill for a new android ROM to flash on this thing. I was hoping there'd be more chatter on this forum, but I guess it's to be expected considering it's just now ending up in people's hands.
If it allowed for the creation of an Android Wear-compatible Ticwatch 2, I'd lend my current one out to a respected developer here on XDA.
I have an onyx. I really love this watch but android wear would be more powerful -> native language, more apps etc.
Please! Make it happen
It would be great.
I would help as far as i can
Well, we have a chinese only Android Wear ROM so we'd have the drivers for the hardware possibly, but how easy will it be to port a normal Android Wear ROM over to it with those if even possible?
Well, my idea is porting the Framework and Launcher from wear to normal Android. Ok, my purpose is for a Phone ( Fun Recycling Project) but thats just Hardware difference

Activate developer mode to sync wear apps
Here's what an avid user from the FB Ticwatch 2 group found out: In the ticwear app, tap on the ticwear app's version number to activate developer mode. In "advanced settings" activate the "1024" option and then sync the apps. This also causes all wear apps to sync to the watch. Note that any apps that require a connection to the phone to sync data will not work properly. An example of a working app is Task Manager For Android Wear. Let's see what else we can discover!
This is a good hint. I activate it and now i have all my android-wear supported apps in my watch drawer. But they are not working. Eg. google maps:

I think it is just the "connection" part missing.
Because apps that dont need to be directly connected to the phone work well. like games

Need help identifying Android 12 HU

So I got this thing from Amazon there's like 300 bucks on sale so it's worth a little bit more than that which from my experience with previous PX3 px5 systems usually if you spend a little bit more you get a better quality product. But this one doesn't seem to be an mtcb or an MTC I can't really figure out which head unit it is. It says it came with Android 12 and a octa core processor. Also says it has 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. It looks very similar to my old dasaita hu. It says the processor is a b200 and I've never even heard of that although it said it came within AC8*** processor here's a screenshot of the setting screen if you guys could help me identify so I can find a custom rom and get some information on what I can do with this thing that would be cool. Thank you.

It's an STM32 type device.
Awesome. Thanks.

Yeah I'm very aware of what the search function is. I just wasn't sure which terms I should be using to search, hence me asking.

Hence providing the search terms in addition to answering your question which was so graciously gratified. I could have remarked without remiss for a post in the wrong forum, including a software development forum for what might be considered a request for others to do leg work
You really don't want a custom rom and they do not exist. Even the MTCD hacks are just modded factory ROMS which largely fix problems.
Suggest relegating the STM32 to experience and replacing with an UIS7862 FYT based unit. Don't take it personally, the forum is littered with posts from those that buy first and then read the forums second to resolve issues or determine what would have been better. Could also be an opportunity to start a new thread in the correct (Android head-units) forum and start (limited) development for this odd ball.
Not (MTCD) requested moderator move to (Android head-units) forum
Yeah you make a really good point. I didn't think it was going to be that hard to find information on this thing. It'd be cool to have a modded ROM for this particular device as it's not necessarily slow. It just needs some love a little fine-tuning and probably a smack across the face. Haha. Yeah I may look into just selling it and getting another one. Thanks for your input I appreciate it

It looks like I just fell into the same hole! Very similar firmware - STM32 - 20220607-11-BD3-57 but mine also says it's a B100 4 core 32gb/2gb and is running android 12 (supposedly - can't be sure based on others comments of the os/cpu, etc. being faked!) - Only just fitted a few days ago and it's working ok with the navigation software included / plexamp / reversing camera. I'm not too worried about customising the rom in this case but the issues I've had so far:
Google apps all run VERY slow - google maps virtually unuseable, play store is terribly slow to download anything.
Bluetooth to ODB2 adapter won't connect no matter how I try
Can't change the start logo as with other models
Under the Factory settings menu you can log on with code 8888 OR 6666 - using 6666 there is an extra menu item of 'Settings Item Hiding' - I'm guessing that maybe further options for setting up ODB2 might be hidden in there but I can't figure out what the code might be!!

Yeah I've been using Aurora store instead of the Google Play store and I found it more than adequate. I stopped using the play store whenever I could. Plus because it's a stereo other people can get into your car or borrow it I don't like being signed into a Gmail account or any sort of personal data being left on there so what I did is kind of a hybrid method. I use Aurora store for all my Google Play needs I just don't sign into Google Play or Gmail or anything and then I use an account that I made just for my car to like get notifications or at the very least be able to sign into things with Google like Spotify and still be able to have like a playlist personalized and all that but not leave any of my personal account data at risk.
But yeah Google Play store Google maps all of its completely unreliable and unusual so I just went in and disabled Google Play store and I'm probably just going to disable Google Play services as well because it's ****ing useless. Unless one of the other frameworks like a minified open source version or implementation of GSF you know just me better success I'm not really sure what else to do. Switching to another browser will help for your browsing needs so instead of chrome I haven't checked to see if chromium is available for Android but I know Firefox works great so I may switch to that. I'm still in the process of setting mine up. I think when I get some down time later on tonight I'm going to actually try and pull apart the wrong and see what kind of fixes or tweaks I can apply to it. Who knows maybe I can at least get the ball rolling on some sort of development for it and then some of the old hands can come in here then show us how it's done. Maybe if somebody show some actual effort into making these particular units worth modifying as far as their software goes other people will start doing it cuz the processor itself shows promise and it's definitely not slow. I mean in any benchmark that I've seen the AC8257 is ranked in like the top three I guess a lot of the rockchips soc.
And yeah I just actually got into that menu earlier and it doesn't open up much it does give you some engineering tools to modify the camera and the radio a bit. I mean other than it being slow for Google services and not being able to change the default launcher very well or customize how it looks I mean it's doing its job it's just in some aspects it's lacking. I'm hoping I can change that so I don't have to go just flat out by another head unit.
