Right now I have no problem tethering off my Galaxy Nexus on T-Mobile with an unlimited plan, whether on my tablet, laptop, or desktop. The Nexus 4 looks pretty nice, but my concern - since T-Mobile is also carrying it, does that mean it'll have the capability to block tethering without the proper plan, even using the Play unlocked version? Does the T-Mobile one even have anything confirmed other than a higher price? Apparently 42Mbps speeds are confirmed on the Play version through the Google press release and the Play Store specs are wrong.
I know its all speculation at this point since nobody has the phone, but that'd be a huge factor as to whether I sell my Galaxy Nexus now and go back to my HTC G2 until I get the Nexus 4 (while I can still get a decent amount for it), or just get my high-performance fix with the Nexus 10 (which I'd be planning to get regardless after selling my Toshiba Thrive).
If you can root it, you can tether w/o being charged a fee. True story.

If you buy it from T-Mobile, they will have the IMEI and can track it. Better get it from the PlayStore.

Except I've had issues tethering with a rooted/ROM'd G2 occasionally, and have had friends having issues with tethering on rooted devices, so I can't say that's entirely true.

But if T-Mobile ends up carrying the same unlocked version (just upcharging for whatever reason), then wouldn't they be able to track the IMEI or whatever of the unlocked version too?

I can say it's entirely true. No problems tethering with root on ATT or VZW with my Captivate, Atrix or Gnex using either WiFi Tether free app or built in AP via AOKP or CM for 3+ years in at least 2 states. So if you are having problems, you are doing it wrong.

T-Mobile only knows the imei of the phones they sell. They can't and don't have access (unless it's currently connected to their network) of any other imei.

How exactly can you root "wrong" like you're saying? Fact is, I've gotten the "get a hotspot plan" pages when tethering to my laptop/desktop numerous times while I had my G2, running both CM7 and CM9. Maybe T-Mobile is just more stringent about sniffing out tethering?

No one said you were rooting wrong, they said if you're having tethering issues then you're tethering wrong. But it just depends on the current tower you're on as well as traffic at the time, as well as luck.

Exactly. So while tethering is possible on rooted devices, its not guaranteed to work 100% of the time, which is what I'm trying to get at.

No, no. My VZW LTE tethered from my Gnex is more reliable than my Charter cable internet, in fact I use it as a backup when Charter goes out. (which is a few time a month.) If you don't have data it is because of your carrier. And when I said doing it wrong I meant tethering not rooting. There are many many threads on how to properly tether. When done properly tethering works 100% of the time, not having data to tether is a different issue altogether.

It seems to be pretty well established that T-Mobile is packet-sniffing to detect unauthorized tethering. It appears that they detect the User Agent string if you are using Internet Explorer or Chrome (but apparently not Firefox, I imagine because Android Firefox is able to pretend to be the desktop version with one tap). Changing the User Agent string for your browser or using a VPN tunnel circumvents the detection, and non-browser access (SSH, SMTP, etc.) is not checked, either. All that's independent of whether you are rooted or not.
just install a user agent add on or extention on your laptop. Firefox and chrome both have them, i set mine to nexus 7 user agent and the tether blocking pages go away for good.

IMEIs are assigned in blocks. Even if they don't have access to the info from the manufacturer, (they almost certainly do), they can still figure it out. If, for example, they've sold Nexus 4s with IMEIs 1001 and 1003, and you log onto their network with 1002, they can draw a pretty solid conclusion.
The hard part is figuring out if you're tethering or not, which requires invasive packet sniffing if the phone itself doesn't report tethering (that's how they track tethering with branded devices). I don't believe, based on my quick research, that T-Mo is sniffing everyone's packets. Which means they probably aren't watching you unless you are streaming 20GB a month. They are tracking user agents on branded phones, it seems.

I would buy the one from the play store, but the issue is if it's an app it may be firmware specific to the T-mo sold one maybe? I'm not sure how it'll work but has anyone heard anything? I don't know about the Nexus 4 or t-mo's wifi calling but I use my Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 WiFi only to make calls using GrooVe IP Lite for free it should work with an unlocked Nexas 4 also I would think without even having a regular phone connection like t-mobile.

Until now the T-Mobile WiFi Calling app required a radio/kernel combination that maybe only the T-Mobile version might have … Having said that since both would be pretty similar after getting kernel source from both it could be ported later on the near future … Unless T-Mobile its not planning on supporting it OR goes the Skype route and re-writes the app all together …..

If it has the hardware compatibility then it could simply be enabled via an app on the play store. I have also read it dependent on the kernel so maybe its something the t-mobile version would be including with their own nexus 4's and the app download would activate it. Which means some XDA hackery and a kernel flash could remedy all the play store purchasers on T-mobile. Here to hoping. Overall though based on the Nexus privy, its not likely.

T-Mobile's version is NOT modified at all, in any way, zero, nothing. They will hand you an identical device that someone who ordered through the Play Store will get.

Disagree.... would be nice if we could at least download WifiCalling from Market... I've made infrequent use of WifiCalling on my Sensation4G.. but the times I did use it, it was a significant help. I care more about this than SD slot or removable battery. Hopefully it is something which some DEV can get to work (once there is a TMo phone with JB version.

Sounds more like you agree. Yeah if T-Mobile could make something you download from Google Play that enables wifi calling, that would be great. Love it or hate it, it's not going to be baked into the ROM. Google learned from letting Verizon have control over their Galaxy Nexus.

With the question I didn't mean if tmo would modify the phone, I love nexus because there free of ****wear, but the wifi calling app is something I'd still have loved to see. Was hoping they'd bring to play store or something. Now I'm really at an impass though. At college with not much coverage and wanted this phone bad, but without wifi calling using the phone may be somewhat of an issue. Yeah I could use GrooVip but I'm not sure if that's really good enough. Maybe I'll give it a go. If it sucks I can switch to att at the end of my contract and use the same device to hopefully get service.

GRoove sucks, there is a delay that you can't get rid of. Okay in a pinch but not worthy of real use

apparently, T-Mo is taking a functionality away from their own store bought phones, as opposed to the Google Play Store purchased phones. That is a fail (along with the pricing debacle, ie, paying more to be locked into a contract).

It is not a fail. They are selling a Nexus device. Nexus devices are pure Android, no added carrier bloatware.
No wifi calling is a deal killer for me.
It is not something that could ever be downloaded from the play store because of the way it works. It needs to interface with the radio at a low level. If TMO doesnt do it, it will never be added to the phone.
This is not a piece of "bloatware" for TMO users. This is a very very useful function which cannot technically be done any other way. An exception should have been made.

You are under the assumption "bloatware" = "something bad". Some bloatware can be good, or useful. If you need TMO's wifi calling feature, a Nexus device is not for you. Get a Galaxy S III or something that T-Mobile was able to get their hands on the software and add their own here it comes-bloatware!
Argh.. yes I forgot... I do use WiFi calling in buildings sometimes.. the reception is so bad on the cell radio, its the only way to get calls sometimes... this is not a trivial thing to lose
Hello all. I am really looking forward to the new Nexus 4 as is everyone else :laugh:. The only question I have, and it's a biggie for me, will there be a wifi calling app for the play store version of the phone. I assume that there will be one for the Tmobile store bought version, but where I live I get little to no cell service. I use the wifi calling anytime I am at the house therefore I need it. I would like to buy the phone from the play store because my contract isn't up soon. If not is it possible that an apk could be made to just flash into the phone's software? Maybe I'm just rambling on here, but I am just happy to see a new Nexus phone. :good::good:

AFAIK wifi calling has not even been confirmed, although it would be strange for a tmo device to lack it. They cannot provide this through the app store due to the complexity and low level nature of it, but it can be flashed if tmo makes it available on their own devices.
I think there are two possibilities:
1 its likely to come on tmo carrier devices sold at subsidy or through tmo, and unlikely to come on play store devices.
2 It is possible that the Nexus 4 will not have wifi calling support at all.
Either way I wouldnt expect wifi calling out of the box with a play store device.
This is not something that can be modded. The galaxy nexus still has no wifi calling support.

chat support told me yesterday that the one from the tmobile store would have wifi calling.

well that probably ends it for me, I was thinking since the phone is so cheap, I could probably just pay a little more for unlimited minutes but then there is still the issue of getting reception in the house.
Thanks for all the replies everyone. I can only hope that it does have it. I realy enjoy being able to rely on my internet rather than mobile service. Where I live I can only get 1 or two bars of service, so you can imagine that without wifi calling I cant even order a pizza. Ironly of it is that I live on a road named Tower Rd. due to the fact there are several cell towers built on the top of a mountain, and yet I still get no service.

T-Mobile WiFi Calling its not just an app, it needs a combination of Kernel and Radio protocols that WOULD require T-Mobile to have to re-write some of the software in it (witch I think they should since they are probably gonna have higher prices on the device any way ) but it really seems that google made a push for untouched software all across the Nexus 4 line
Why not use a third party app for wifi calling I use it on my GNote10.1 and it works quite well?
I think s.b. on G+ said T-Mobile had contributed stuff for Wi-Fi calling to AOSP; but I never checked the validity of his statement.

Really ??? Where did you see that ? We could definitely use that as a start to build our own !
With a combination of csipsimple app, free sipgate.com account, and google voice, you can do free wifi calling both send and receive from any android, doesn't even need to be activated. I have an old and slow htc hero I keep around as a spare that even works decently for wifi calling. I'm not going to write a guide on how to do this, but plenty of others already have.

It is all basically software. Just take a look at the HTC HD2 with Android, a WinMo phone that has Android T-Mobile wifi calling thanks to XDA developers. Perhaps the libs/apks from other phones can just be copied over and it would work.
Okay. I've searched XDA and Google, and even posted in another thread here but never got an answer. I am leaving VZW for T Mobile. I am expecting my Nexus 4 to arrive this coming week. I plan on rooting the N4 pretty much as soon as I get it. I have also read lots of posts regarding difficulties tethering a laptop to an N4 on Tmo.
My question is:
Will I be able to tether (wifi or BT) my N7 to my Tmo N4? If so, will i have to use any special apps?
I have had success using PdaNet+ on my VZW phones to tether my N7, but I need to know if Tmo will flag me for the N7 like they do with others for their laptops. My daily usage includes the Slacker Radio and NetFlix apps. i also have OnLive, but didn't typically use it that much due to high latency issues in the Lynnhaven area of Virginia Beach. If absolutely needed, I am open to the VPN option, but I would need instruction as to how to do that (like do I set up the VPN on the N7 or the N4?) but I would prefer, if possible, to just tether normally.

I'm also waiting for my n4, but I'm already with tmobile. My current phone is running cm9 and I teather my work laptop to it with no problems. I don't pay extra for teathering and I've never been flaged

i'm on Orange UK (aka. EE now also incorporating T-Mobile) and couldn't originally tether either my dell NB or playbook -- that is, they could connect to the N4 wifi hotspot but no data transfer nor internet access was possible. this was despite my being able to tether successfully on my old HD2 using the same account.
turned-out i needed to phone Orange and have them activate tethering on the phone, i received an "service update" text and restarted, since when it's worked a treat on both devices. there was no charge for this and i was told that orange imposes no restrictions on tethering outside of the existing account data cap, in my case 1GB.
t-mobile may operate a different policy.
EDIT: just realized, Norfolk ... Virginia (not UK), doh!
I'm on tmobile US on the unlimited plan and I'm able to, love it the only thing battery sucks :/

Truly Unlimited blocks the tethering feature from being added to your account. However, since the Nexus 4 is a stock device and doesn't connect to the network using the tethering APN while tethering is enabled, you should be able to tether any device to your Nexus 4 without issue.

Yes you can tether to the Nexus 4 on T-Mo. I don't it a lot but I used to the tether to the Nexus 4 a couple times when no WiFi was available.

Well that's why I'm asking the question. There is no WIFI at my work so without tethering to my N4, I will have no way to use my N7 online. Like I said in the OP. I watch Netflix everyday during down time and stream Slacker Radio while I'm working. I work security on 9.5 hour shifts. Netflix and Slacker just make the day go by.
Just for anyone wondering, I have had no issues tethering my Nexus 7 with my Nexus 4. Been doing it for a couple weeks now with no issues. Actually, with Verizon 4G, my data speeds would fall of rapidly as the day went on, dropping down below 1 Mbps by noon. With T-Mobile's HSPA+, I have been getting between 8 Mbps and 12 Mbps down and around 2 Mbps up consistently all day every day.

youll be able to tether until they catch you, then they will force you to buy the tethering plan if you want to tether further.

From what I have read throughout my searches on XDA and Google, it seems that as long as you are tethering another mobile device, i.e. a tablet, they don't seem to be able to tell. I have also read some accounts saying not to use "desktop mode"in your browser. I have been using Chrome, Firefox, Netflix, OnLive, and even BitTorrent (small files so far) with no issues so far.

If anyone else has had different experiences with similar usage, and only concerning tethering tablets and other mobile devices via the Nexus 4, please post them for others (and me) to learn from.
Hi, I want to share a found, I was playing around with my phone this afternoon, I found if you use Ti backup to freeze TetheringProvision4.06.67 on your ATT note 3, the tethering feature will work(before it asked me to call 611), the mobile hotspot app will crash at first then come right back on, the USB tethering works even better, just plug your USB cable into your computer.
I have no tether plan, I have an ATT note 3 rooted, it is running 4.3 with the latest firmware ending BNB4.

so can you get caught by AT&T for doing this? will they simply tell you not to do it again or force you onto a higher priced plan where tethering is allowed?

I think they can still catch you, especially because this method does nothing to hide the tethered data usage, like PDAnet does.
However I've tethered about ~500mb with a similar method and never got caught before, no warning or anything. If anything they'll warn you, and if you continue they'll probably bump up your plan.

I found WiFi Tether Router on the GP store and it works on the Note 3. The developer is great and was very helpful when I ran into problems. Initially, it did not work on the Note 3 and he refunded me. A couple months later, a buddy told me that the author got it working. So, I bought it and BOOM...it just works.
I would use this with caution. I used foxfi or pdanet(don't remember which one) to tether my note 2 to my macbook air and for about a month this worked(used it very sparingly maybe 300mb out of my unlimited plan). Then one day I get a message saying that since I tether they will change me a to a more suitable plan(att's way of saying **** YOU). In conclusion I lost my $30 unlimited plan(No way of getting this plan back, I talked to att floor manager for over an hour) and now have a $50 5gb thethering plan(they let me downgrade to the 2gb or 3gb plan, but it was not enough data for my use).

Good to hear, I'd still be wary of AT&T finding out. Maybe use a VPN or something. .

I used to use this back on 4.3 before root, but no rom'ed with 4.4. The only issue I ever ran into is ATT throttling me at 5gigs but that wasn't just tethering.
My question is, what firmware are you on?
I've done the same thing and froze the tethering provision. However, the tether menu doesn't show connected devices like yours. Like the allowed devices or the configure. When I hit menu it only shows a help tab.
NVM I reread your post and you are on 4.3. So am i. Anybody know why our menus are different?

If i use tethering instead of wifi hotspot but the phone is connected to wifi will the device that is usb tethered to my phone use my phone data or the actual wifi from the house
