Hello all, I have a question about the gorilla glass on the DX. In your opinions, do we need a screen protector or not? I'd love to just have the glass front but also don't want to harm the phone. Also, exactly how many gorillas were sacrificed to make each glass screen? I want to rub it in PETA's face.

To use a screen protector...or not to use a screen protector.. that IS the question...
Um.. I think its more of a personal preference... Do you tend to be harsh on phones? Or do you take care of them.... That is probably some of the thinking you should put into the matter.
I have had my X for around 7 months, and I take it all over. I have not scratched my screen at all... Its really if you are overly worried about it getting scratched... If so, why not spend a few bucks to protect your precious investment!
I NEVER rocked screen protectors until I got my X... and that wasn't until I saw a scratch on a friends.....
My advice would be if you are going to get one, get a good one like steinhell or however you spell it.
If you get their top of the line it s also good at fighting against fingerprints.

If you are going to keep the phone in a jeans pocket I would say get the protector.
The SGP crystal clear you can't even tell it is there.
How easy is it to get a piece of sand in your pocket and it is harder than the glass.

Never used a screen protector or case. Never even bothered to take care of my phone. No marks on it whatsoever and I got it on launch day. Get a screen protector if you want to crappy looking layer of scratched up plastic over your screen. Get a case if you want your phone to be all scratched up.
Cases and screen protectors both do more harm than good.
My Droid X has proven very sturdy. It's been dropped, kept in random pockets exclusively (with keys occasionally) and has no scratches on the glass. The only damage to the body is a couple of minor dents in either upper corner, which have to be pointed out, and scratches on the back "M" logo.
I typically use a two-piece plastic shell, because I like the way it looks and it offers a little protection when dropped. I tried the Zagg Invisi-shield, as well.
I can't recommend the Invisi-shield, though. It went on with a little work and it felt fine to the touch. It was also only slightly more smudge prone than the glass itself. However, I scratched the protector the day after installation with a paper napkin. A couple weeks later, and a few bucks for shipping, my replacement shield was delivered with a tiny scratch in the center of the front side.
I say run without protection.
I have had my X since it came out. I briefly had the crappy Verizon screen protector/antiglare film on. I keep my phone in my pocket with the glass against my leg and have had no problems. For Christmas I got the Seidio surface combo case. So it isn't in my pocket as much anymore.
Ive had my X since before froyo with no protection whatsoever. I carry it like jgraham with the glass against my leg. I've dropped this thing on blacktop and facedown on concrete. Not a scratch on the screen. I have some nasty battle scars on the little ridge that protrudes up past the screen though.
I can't stand the screen protectors. I don't like the look or feel of them. If you destroy the glass somehow, just pay the $50 deductable or whatever. Well worth it to me.

I also recommend the Seidio Crystal Clear protector. It's much more invisible, and less friction, than the Zagg InvisibleShield. It's also much cheaper (you get a 2-pack for almost 1/2 the price of one InvisibleShield).
I've been using the Seidio for a few months now and it works great. I can't even tell it's on my phone, except it collects smudges a bit more than the naked glass. But a quick wipe on my shirt removes them. Cheap insurance in my book.
A major plus with the SGSII is the Gorilla Glass on the display, but the million dollar question is what it has on the camera lens?
I love not having to worry about the screen on my Nokia N8 (also Gorilla glass), but am always wary about the camera lens which is "scratch resistent mineral glass" although it's generally recessed in its housing enough not to be a real issue.
Looking at the SGSII videos and pictures, however, it looks as though it will rest solidly - and directly - on the lens cover of the camera in the back (and of couse that's not part of an easily replacable component like the battery hatch).
So - are we going to be able to put our phones down face up without worry?
You shouldn't worry, scratches on lenses isn't really a problem. The reason is a because of how optics in lenses/cameras work. The surface on the lense is so far from focus that a scratch on the lens isn't projected on the lens as a scratch. Of course, a big damage will cause visible effects though.

Depends how you abuse a phone. iPhones shatter because they are small and slick and have hard metal around the edge that directly transfers impact force to everything else because it is the frame of the phone (plastic or metal that is attached to frame would dampen the impact somewhat) Also I think it is the back of the iPhone that shatters, and that glass is not as good as the screen glass.
tjtj4444: great first post. I agree 100%, small scratches are not visible to the image sensor when focused on something far away. A finger smudge is worse. So I hope those lenses are oleophobic
The camera cover on the Samsung Galaxy S2 is suppose to be depressed behind the phone. I don't think it will be vulnerable to scratches and severe damage. However, as in the case of all tech-gadgets, over the years of ownership, there should be visible signs of wear and tear. If these signs of wear of don't appear over time, then I have to say, you must be a very careful owner, lol.
I'm none too worried about an odd scratch, but more of multiple scratches. I remember being crushed when my Samsung i900 arrived with two scratches on the lens, but they never affected the photos.
On my Desire, however, I got so many scratches that they caught enough light to have the same effect as grease on the lens. Fortunately with the Desire, I replaced the battery cover multiple times and eventually just popped the lens cover out of one.
So, no, an occasional scratch won't ruin it forever, but multiple, repeated scratches will.
Gorilla glass isn't even that good honestly. It seems to be great for demonstrations where people actively try to damage it with keys and stuff but when you use it in the real world, stuff like sand and fine debris can easily mess the screen up.
On the forums here, someone stated that their LG Optimus 2X screen shattered and he is looking for a replacement, he eventually found the necessary parts, but my thought is that if it can shatter with just a drop, whats to say that this is a one time occurrence? Although there is no doubt its stronger than mineral glass and Apple's Glass.

Im not so sure about that; I had my Captivate for about 7 months and nnever used a screen protecter.
I dropped the phone multiple times from various heights along with bumps, bangs,and stuffing in pockets.
Not a single scratch; the phone looked like hell too, However if you cover the body you'd think it was new.

i used samsung omnia hd for 1 and a half year without any screen protector. and when i sold it, not even a single scratch wwas there. gorilla glass really works

Yeah, it definitely works. The flooring in my bathroom almost has a sandpaper consistency (yeah, lovely, I know, but it's a rental flat), and my record of inflicting damage on my phones is nothing I'm proud of, but I mostly blame that da%& flooring.
And, yet, I must have slid my Nokia N8 face down across that thing like 4-5 times and there's not a mark on the glass (the anodized aluminum is another matter unfortunately).
I'd be gutted if it turned out the SGSII didn't have Gorilla Glass. Last thing I need now is another phone with a grease-magnet screen protector.

You have to distinguish between scratching the actual screen versus scratching the oleophobic coating off. The iPhone has had the coating since the 3GS so it's a lot easier to scratch it off than to actually scratch the screen.
I've had a Vibrant (Gorilla Glass with no coating) and a few Nexus S's (no gorilla glass but oleophobic coating) and I abused the crap out of the Vibrant but it stayed flawless. The Nexus S... had the coating come off but if you clean it well you won't notice until you grease up the screen again, then the lack of coating becomes apparent. Even still, it stood up pretty well and it feels amazing compared to a screen without the coating.

So a screen protector is not needed or to have it is just a benefit?
If it has Gorilla Glass, I will definitely be going without a screen protector.
Sure an added layer of protection wouldn't hurt, but it comes at the cost of a plastic protector that attracts more dust and grime, detracting from the touch, feel and appearance of the device.
i'm sure it will have gorilla glass.... that seemed to be the trend with this past gen of samsung's Galaxy labeled phones

Just an FYI, I've read lots of posts by SGS owners who got scratches on the screen just by carrying the phone in their pocket. I don't doubt any of the reports by posters here, but Google "I scratched my Gorilla glass" and you might not be so confident.
I am not having any glass cracking problems so far. The only negative in the build quality of z3c for me are the plastic edges, especially the narrow line between the glass and translucent edges. The lines got scratched even from putting a case on the phone. After 1 month of using a hard plastic case I got the edges of the phone pretty damaged. However I have found a simple solution to make the edges smooth again. Used a very soft steel wool to make it look like new again. However you have to be really careful and cover your screen doing this...
Agreed - I would also say that the back picks up scratches pretty easily but as someone who likes to use their phone naked (apart from and back glass screen protectors) this is my main build quality gripe.
Many thanks for the soft steel wool tip, I've just ordered some! Also got a bumper case on the way - I'd have preferred to not use one but the plastic they've used for the z3c seems to be softer than that used in the z1c. I did have some dings on the side of that phone but they were the result of harder impacts.

Unfortunetely, Im an expert in this case as well... I scratched mine walking out of the shop, where I bought this phone, yes the same day just a few minutes after takin it. I picked up the white one Z3C and after falling some black dots stayed. I was so unhappy, because all of my phones looks brilliant, like a brand new phones after a year of using (S Z Z1 Z2). This time was different. As I said, it had been driving me crazy so I sold that phone and bought a new one, white again. This time I ordered the gel case first, and I recommend you guys do the same before buying. Just a little smart tip for you, I might be saving your life right now

Is anyone using this phone completely naked? No case, no screen protector, no back protection? I asked this another way a little earlier; only one response. Very curious. I'm looking at the Z5 Compact and the Samsung S6 Edge. I prefer the specs and size of the Z5, but I know 2 people who use their Edge without any protection. After several months, they still look good.
All opinions appreciated.

Not very old but I use mine with a tempered glass screen protector that you'd never know was there anyhow... Phone doesn't have a mark or look worn

Well, it is glass at the back, it's just frosted.
I have screen protectors both sides. Usually backside gets more hits
I just put a tempered glass screen protector on mine and am debating getting a $3 aluminum bumper from eBay until the Devilcase is released. I like the look of the phone naked and have had it that way for a few weeks, but I already have a few tiny nicks on the poly carbonate ridge along the backside. They're hardly noticeable, but the phone hasn't taken any hard drops. I'm thinking the PC won't hold up long term without getting damaged.
I've been using the phone without case since one day.
I'm just worried about the camera glass. I'd put a ring a bumpon or something to lift up that area a bit.

I'm not saying I disbelieve you am I? Just saying it doesn't feel like it does on a Z3

Running mine naked but have only had it for a day. It's the smallest phone I've used in awhile and I've almost dropped it a bunch of times. I have a tpu case coming today to help with the grip.

Completely naked. Have a little scratch on the back, looks like a discolouration. I will get tempered glass for both sides if I can find it in a store where they can also attach them for me.

I use a Glass screen protector on the front that where 2 bucks on ebay and on the back i have a plastic protector that i bought from ebay also, pieces where 99 cent and i rock a clear case and a black s case and i bought these rubber plugs for the earphone jack and charge port so it wont collect dust also 2 bucks for 100 pieces.
Running terrapin bumper on mine. Phone is just too damn slippery not too

I've only owned two smart phones in my life. The very first one, I got a silicone case and a SGP (plastic) screen protector. I've scratched the screen protector maybe twice, not sure if it would have scratched glass. I owned it for 2 years
For my second phone, I saw some videos about how silicon cases and bumpers don't really protect against drops because of how thin they are. I decided I didn't need the case but still got the protector since it has no affect on clarity, feel, thickness. I've had it for three years. Scratched the screen protector three times. I don't know how it happened but I did get a tiny crack in the bezel. Since it's black its barely noticeable.
I've dropped my phone plenty of times. Usually not from far, like 2-3ft onto carpet.
I just ordered the Z5 Compact. I decided to try the tempered glass protector. And I also ordered the Orzly Fusion bumper case. I figure the hard back might actually protect something. I figure the slippery body and sharp corners make it more susceptible to damage. Also, I'm paying full price for this phone so I'm more inclined to protect it.
I read about people that use their phones naked all the time. Maybe it really isn't needed but I don't want to take the chance with my own phone.
One other alternative I can think of is to buy insurance for your phone. Something with a low deductible.
Currently I'm using an S5 without any cases or covers, and it's still drop-proof, dropped it multiple times on hard floor/concrete and there is no damage on the screen what so ever. And before that I had an HTC One X, which is probably more similar to the Edge in that the screen isn't protected if it drops face down, I did eventually crack it with that kind of a drop. However the edge is gonna be even more problematic because even the back is glass, and no plastic protruding edge to protect it.
Sure I could put it in a bulky case but then it kind of defeats the purpose of having one of the most premium feeling phones ever doesn't it? It'll also negate any ergonomic benefits of the curved back edge as well as the ease of edge swipe on the front edge. Might as well just get something like a.... I don't know, nobody makes high end plastic phones anymore now days, even cheap phones like One Plus is front+back curved glass. Also this thing is already a bigger phone than what I'm used to, adding a beefy case is just gonna make it that much bigger, which I do not like.
Well I guess plenty of people did survive the iPhone 4 glass sandwich era just fine, I'll just have to wish myself luck. I wonder how much would one of those adhesive skins help in a drop situation. Sure they are very thin but if think about the physics of it, gorilla glass is actually quite flexible so it doesn't break from the acceleration of the impact itself, so thinness doesn't really matter. What actually breaks these surface hardens glass is usually a microscopic failure on the surface developing into a big crack. And those microscopic failures can happen when they make contact with sharp hard stuff like individual sand particles, they effectively puncture the surface and develop a weakness. So if you have a skin on the glass, what'll hopefully happen instead is that the skin will be thick enough for the particle to not make direct contact with the glass, and prevent breaking. Even though such thin skins cannot significantly reduce the impact acceleration.
I understand your points, but please, don't ever try to use this phone naked. You NEED a case, the grip is so bad that dropping it is almost a guarantee and the back glass seems to be much more fragile than the front glass from what I have seen in videos. About the cases, you may want to look into the Samsung official plastic backs or (when available) the leather backs. The official plastic back cases from Samsung are the only ones (in my opinion) that really do not ruin the phone's design, the design remains almost intact. However, while the grip is much improved over the naked phone, it is nowhere near other bulky and rubberized cases. A rubberized plastic wrap would be a solution, but the big problem still remains - the metal sides of the phone which are very narrow.
PS: As I understand from the latest spy pics, the iPhone 7 will have a glass back again...probably needed for radio/charging/payment/other secret developments.
There are plenty of case available that won't make the phone look s**t. I'm using a Spigen Crystal Clear, a very good combination of protection and looks. It's impossible to completely keep the phone's look and feel, but it's probably as close as possible whilst being confident of being able to accidentally drop it from pocket height without damage.
Glass protectors on these curved screens are to be avoided, that's my personal opinion anyway. My brother bought numerous types of these for his S6 Edge (expensive and cheap) and not one went on properly without raising on the curves within twenty minutes, causing touch problems on the edges. Go for a good quality film type like a Zagg HD Dry.
I copied you entirely mate I'm not ashamed to say. Got my Spigen Crystal Clear yesterday and, your right, it does look good, but not as good as the nekkid phone itself. But I guess that's the price of good protection.
Just waiting for my Zagg HD Dry front and back covers to arrive today.
I'm personally using Otter Box Commuter for me and my wife's phone. I was able to try it on in store before purchasing. I was sort of desperate for a case on delivery day and it was the most protective case I found. I'm happy with it overall. It's sleep and slim and although the whole front in uncovered it does have raised top and bottom edges so if the phone falls flat the screen doesn't actually touch the floor.

I would love to use the phone naked as it just looks so good, but I am scared to risk it. I have never dropped and cracked a phone, and I had an Iphone 4S without a case for 2 years which were well known for getting smashed, I have a clear case on the edge at the moment to offer it some protection.
Carrying and using smart phones without any case is just asking for trouble. I have the S7 Edge and when it arrived on March 2nd it stayed at home in the box until my Spigen Ultra Hybrid case arrived (which was a few days later). I was still using my S5 because I didn't want to take any chances.
After my case arrived I put it on but I still keep the original plastic film on the screen because I was waiting for my Skinomi screen protector to arrive. My Skinomi arrived yesterday and I installed it last night.
So if you don't want a bulky case get the Spigen Ultra Hybrid (I went with the crystal clear color). I ordered my case and screen protector from Amazon. The case is very nice looking and doesn't add any bulk to the phone.

I use the phone naked and dropped it from about 3,5 feet, first it hit the steel base of a table and than it bounced on a wooden floor, not a scratch :angel:
