WiFi always on. - Zuk Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there, I'm writing from my Zuk now and I have a WiFi issue.
As from this screen of battery drain, my WiFi results always on, but it isn't.
I thought it was the "always scanning" feature, but it turned out it was disabled too.
I also tried to turn it on and off again, and it didn't work.
It's 6 pm and my battery is only at 43% whith non a deep use...any clue with that?
Others have this issue? Tried to Google on this forum but I didn't find anything.
Thanks to anyone who can help.

---------------------Small update------------------------
After yesterday post, I tried to reboot the phone with WIFI turned OFF.
At the reboot, the WiFi was not in use and the indicator in battery stats was right.
Then i tried to TURN ON the WIFI, was connected several minutes, then i disconnected it, but the indicator in battery stats was still counting it as "WiFi on".
After a sencond reboot, the indication goes on normally as WiFi OFF".
So, my conclusion is: when i turn the WIFI ON, it's start to count as IN USE; then when i TURN IT OFF, it's still counted as IN USE, untill i apply a reboot.
I'm not sure if it's just a bug of indication, or if the WiFi really remain ON, despite of the indicator.
Curious to see if anyone else have this problem.
More, i would like to submit this bug, there is any way to do it?
thank you.

I suppose it's a google/lollipop bug because I had it on my note 4 and on any version of lollipop on it! Nothing I could do to make it go away!
However, to see this bug on a zuk is kind of a surprise to me because cyanogen usually fixes those nasty bugs!

Man that's what I told you! I have the same bug on my note 4! Exact same behavior! After reboot it goes well until I turn wifi ON again!
But rest assured that's a graphical bug only as far as my investigation revealed! Wifi is turned off and it's not ON!

Well, from your previous message I didn't understand you meant all you wrote here, because you wrote only that you had the same bug on note 4, nothing more ?
I hope they will fix this bug in the following updates.

Disable location scanning. It's not a CM but rather a google apps issue.

How would I go about disabling location scanning?

I have disabled same bro.. But issue still exists..i am on nuclea Rom....

I did some testing myself and found out the issue. Even if you disabled some of those general wifi scanning features some apps have permission to scan for wifi and so you will see wifi is always on in the battery menu. The only way to truly fix that is if you go to privacy guard, if your ROM has it, go to advanced and then go through every single application and disable wifi scan. After doing this whenever i turned wifi on or off it showed in the battery stats. :highfive:

Screen off but not sleeping??

Last night I used my phone for about 43 minutes before going to bed. Then I put my phone into Airplane mode and turned off the screen. When I woke up this morning, my phone was 10% less battery, and then I find this:
How the heck is my phone off but not sleeping? And what is using the battery???
I couldn't get a screenshot of other stuff before the plugged in stuff reset, but Partial wakelock usage was Android System. In About Phone -> Battery, the largest was Display followed by Cell Phone Idle. (Again, screen was off, and phone was in airplane mode.)
Why is it off but not "sleeping"?? What the heck is going on here??
I'm having the exact same issues.
Which process on your phone is using the most network usage?
battery history>select networkusage
Mine is 1013, and I don't know what it is.
I also put the phone in airplane mode at night, and compared to your 10% loss, mine was 45 in 4 1/2 hours

Yep, 1013.
Unfortunately, it's hard to tell if this is really the top used overnight, since the "unplugged" history resets as soon as I plug in power. I'll check again tomorrow morning if it is the most used for overnight.
I doubt it is though, because in airplane mode, there should be 0 network usage, shouldn't it?...

When in airplane mode nothing should be using network since there is no network available. However i am guessing some process is trying to usenetwork and maybe it lists that under battery history.
Yay! I woke up this morning and my phone did not lose a single percentage of battery life!
I used TasKiller to absolutely kill all running apps before going to bed And of course, made sure to start the clock app again (even though ignored) just in case!
I guess apps in the background really do waste a ton of battery!!!
No idea what 1013 is or what else might be causing it to not sleep, but killing all apps before going to bed seems to be the only solution.
I'm not sure if this is an Android issue, or badly written apps issue.
You almost had it, let me fix...

Much better
I do not have this 1013 on my phone, so it has to be something you have installed. Further my phones sleep and onscreen times fairly closely match up, and I do not kill any app what so ever. If you're unable to run debugging directly, I would suggest uninstalling app's one or two at at time starting with the lesser main stream ones.
AHA!!!! I've figured it out!!!
I've been closely monitoring my phone over the past 11 days, trying to spot when it goes into non-sleep mode. I've noticed this happens every few days, and trying to get the pattern down for what was causing it was extremely difficult since I seemed to always be running different things (or nothing at all). I have a Battery History shortcut (mapped by AnyCut) on my home screen, which I've been checking frantically every few hours (crazy yes ).
Well today I finally figured out what was causing it! It's not an App. And it's not an Android System app either. I finally found the pattern that this is frequently caused (but not always obviously) when putting the phone into Airplane Mode. For some reason, it seems closing down the connection sometimes will randomly prevent sleep mode, regardless if absolutely nothing was using the phone or data connection at the time the phone was switched to Airplane Mode.
This would explain why in the picture of my first post, it went into non-sleep mode immediately after I turned off the connection and went to sleep.
As for a fix, I've found that switching Airplane Mode off and back on (cycle the connection on/off) will allow it to sleep properly.
WOW, that took some detective work I can't believe it, but damn, that is weird. Anyone know why this would be happening? Anyone out there experiencing the same issues? (It's hard to tell unless you look at Battery History often, as in my first post. But I suspect if some of you do, you'll see the same thing I'm seeing.)
Yes I have seen the same thing but clearly it was happening prior to the first N1 update. Are you still seeing this problem after the update?

[Soloved] how to keep wifi on and on

hi, not 3G user, wifi is my only choice. but there is something,
if we put the phone to sleep with the wifi is connected, the wifi will just automatically turn off after a certain time. is there any modification that could have the wifi on all the time?
edit:
i think i figured it out, it just under the advance setting in the wifi seeting page (press the menu button)
i just set it, and will see how fast it drain my battery.
edit:
tested, and it is not that fast draining, 8+ hours drained 7%, not bad, i think i can keep it on and on, cheer
btw, i am using langthang's NDT CM v16, impressive works, thanks him

Not sure why you want to have WiFi on all the time. It will deplete your battery very quickly on standby. Like you, I did not subscribe to a data plan. So I chose a NAND ROM that quickly turns WiFi on and off automatically with the phone. I am using Tytung's Nexus HD2 v3.0 ROM. WiFi quickly turns on when I turn the phone on and off when I put the phone in standby. I would suggest trying a ROM you like that has the same functionality for controlling WiFi. I think most of the ROMs are this way to save battery power rather than having WiFi or worse, GPS on all the time.

I also have TextFree and have my WiFi sleep policy at When screen turns off. I just had my wife text me with my phone in standby and it received and notified me of the text's arrival. I never had my WiFi on all the time in order for TextFree to still work. So I am wondering could it be due to us using different ROMs and their capabilities? Looks like you don't have a large battery drain even with the WiFi on.

[Q] "Google Services" = "Battery Drain" , why the hell ??

Since a couple of days "Google Services" are serving to drain my battery when my device is in "idle state" ....
Yesterday night my battery was 97% charged & when I woke up it was 92% .....This was not the case earlier !!
Then I checked my battery usage which showed "Google Services" eating up 52%......
What may have triggered this "Google Services" to run in the background & eat up my precious battery ?? Any clues & any solution ??
I don't know why, but I've seen plenty of Play reviews complaining about it. You're not alone. Hopefully a patch comes out.

turn location services off. That is what is causing it to run so high.
check this link:

Mine was running 40% Plus until I turned network locations off. randomly appeared out of the blue once I'd turned location on.
This ^. Same experience. Picture attached is from when I had location sources - use wireless network (on), after I unchecked it google services doesn't even show up in my battery stats anymore.
Known bug. You can improve it but never get rid of it until it's patched. I believe the bug is worse on versions earlier than KitKat, especially 4.3.

I noticed battery drain after installing MJ7.
I had this problem, too, while location services were switched off but was able to solve it by switching the phone off, removing the battery for a minute, then performing a cache wipe in recovery mode and finally a reboot. IAW: a soft reset.
Batter Battery Stats widget showed me almost immediately that I was successful, after keeping my phone in stand by for a few minutes after the reset.
Normally you wait for at least an hour to get a good view on wake lock performance.
Before the soft reset the widget showed that my phone was awake all the time (no deep sleep bar, awake bar as big as phone on bar) although the screen was switched off,
After the soft reset the deep sleep bar showed a normal value (almost as big as the phone on bar, which it should be in stand by).
What puzzled me was that before the reset the wake lock bars were small while the awake bar was as big as the phone on bar. Very strange (no wake locks, but still a phone that won't go into deep sleep?), had not seen that before. But I'm a beginner on wake locks. Any expert cares to explain?

After updating from MJ4 to MJ7, it happen the same to me. So i done a factory reset via recovery mode and solved the problem. My battery life improved a lot! So my recommendation is to do a factory reset in recovery mode.

Suddenly WiFi Won't Turn On

Hi All,
This morning I went to turn on WiFi tethering (unlocked/TMO model) and it wouldn't turn on, just saying, "error" in the settings area. I rebooted - same finding. Then I noticed I can no longer turn WiFi on. Attempting to turn WiFi on does nothing. I've rebooted several times and checked recent app updates, but only Google Keep, CapOne, and Zedge have updated recently, and none control WiFi state. Has anyone seen anything like this?
Thanks,
BH
So actually, it seems I can use WiFi, but the second I try and enable tethering (which I do almost every day) I can no longer use WiFi until I power cycle (and tethering never activates - just gives the below error

Not a fix per-say, but could you use USB tethering instead in those circumstances until it's sorted out?

You can follow this thread about enable wifi tethering.. I think it will help you to turn on your Wifi..
http://androidforums.com/galaxy-ring-all-things-root/739312-enable-wifi-tethering.html
So after poking around, I found that the config info (SSID, security type, etc) for my wireless tethering was gone. No idea why, but it was. I re-entered it, and for a day, everything was fine. I thought it was a 'one off' thing and didn't worry about it too much. This morning however it was gone again. No clue why. It *might* coincide w/ my installation of Cerberus now that I think about it. Can a user of both Cerberus and WiFi tethering test?

I believe that there is a known bug causing wakelocks with 5GHz WiFi. For the sake of the battery, it is best to turn off the 5GHz option.

I've done this and it doesn't work. What's strange is my first 6p's wifi was off after I turned the scanning off. This current replacement 6p is always reporting wifi on no matter what I try. Both were running the exact same firmware.

Yes, I saw your post last week and tried restart multiple times to no avail. I wiped the cache and nothing. It's a bit annoying but hasn't affected my battery. Still getting close to 6hrs SOT on average.
Well solved my issue with said method!
Thanks so much!

Odd, never saw this problem when using 5GHz Wifi. Went on vacation with a 2.4ghz router and started seeing this.
WiFi is showing constantly on in my battery stats. I've done everything (Disabled scanning, disabled connectivity services, set to 2.4, wiped cache, etc.)
I've encountered this issue too. So I just leave WiFi scanning on.

I am having an issue since flashing the newest security update with wifi causing massive battery drain.
When I turn wifi off, it turns off and shows as such in battery stats, and does not drain any battery.
But I had wifi on for 3 hours at home today, and it is at the top of my battery usage. This was not the case before the newest update, and I could leave wifi on all day, even when not connected, with negligible battery drain. Now if I leave it on, even when not connected, it is a constant drain.
