Heads up: Code Aurora Forum has released 64 bit marshmallow source tree for msm8916. - E 2015 General

msm8916 a.k.a. snapdragon 410 which is there on the LTE versions of Moto E. I wonder if we can get this up and running on our phones.
Link - "www(.)codeaurora(.)org/xwiki/bin/QAEP/release"
Check the October 9 releases with tag 'LA.BR.1.2.6-00110-8x16.0' and chipset 'msm8916_64'

BUMP!

*If it could be ported to Moto-E so we can get Marshmallow then yeah cool.
I have no clue about that stuff but i will keep an eye out for this topic.

Since we have only 1 GB of RAM, 64-bit is pretty much useless to us. This is a popular SoC among low end to low mid range phones though, so I expect us to easily get 6.0 in some form if Motorola won't do it. It helps that we're on stock android with little modifications already.

64bits demands more RAM to run system, apps that are developed on 32bits don't get any performance gain running on a 64bits system.

i have ported a LOT of x86 'c' code to 64 bit since 2001 roughly and there is far more to it than that..
understanding data types is your first step.. the x86 memory size limit is only part of the equation.
i have hard that as an excuse for dev's to not update their programs for a decade or two though..
you here the same old myth's about the x64 architecture.
..from people who don't code.

One example of the contradiction..
Years ago i got the source code for Cudaminer (crypto currency miner program)
And i compiled it by making slight changes to make sure it compiled in Visual Studio / MingW
And when i launched the 64bit build it was way faster than the 32bit build.
The dev of the cudaminer program said he was never going to do 64bit
because it was not any faster.. i proved crystal clear that yes indeed it WAS much faster
and not long after that he started doing his own 64bit build LOL
I also have run that test on various other miners for crypto coins and every single time the 64 bit was faster.
then years before that i had done other conversions such as eMule
I was one of the very first guys to make and share a 64bit build of eMule on the web.
it used a LOT of 3rd party libs and it had a massive code base.. it was no easy task.
64bit gives no performance gains is a myth.
All i was trying to say is this myth should not be perpetuated but rather we should look
at each case independently and see if this allegation holds true.
Some may benefit and others will not.. best way to see is do it and benchmark etc.
The internet is full of people who spout off and don't know what their talking about and i have made a career out of proving them wrong.
For example i was the only guy to crack/unlock a series of LG cell phones.
I was told by everyone on the web it can't be done because of DRM.
They were wrong and.. it had nothing to do with DRM either.
I wrote a program with a GUI (available in both x86 and x64 windows formats)
posted them online at Howard forums (nobody else ever have)
I don't listen to people on the web ..i go check for myself.
Usually when people say can't they are wrong.
Such as cloning the MEID on 2 of my old phones.. every where i looked i was told no.. "can't"
Well.. LOL
When i finished cloning them i showed some people what i did and laughed..
I had (back in '08) one LG phone and one Samsung phone (running different systems)
and i had my friend call me and text me.. both phones started ringing at once
and both received the text msg at the same time.
You don't believe everything you hear on the web

so why there is no 64 bit roms for this device and why every other sd410 phone with 1gb of ram is 32bit too?

jeez you guys really want to start with me..
look i give up, you all know more than me about 64bit code.
i give up LOL
can we get back to the main topic (the porting of Marshmallow to the phone)
you guys can keep quoting me saying you don't understand what i said (but you know i am wrong) LOL
that make sense ?
64bit is a debate all over the web.. if you have enough experience you have seen the matter argued before.
it's a hot topic so if someone brings it up don't be surprised to see some conflict.
it's sort of like saying the new versions of windows are ugly or not.. it's going to start some arguing.
the difference is i can post proof backing up my mouth (if i had to)
showing how people were wrong about 64bit being slower.
but about Android ? i never claimed to know.. all i said is let's not assume and check.
does that warrant an avalanche of mouthy replies ?
I simply said let's not jump to conclusions.
blame the guy saying that who didn't prove claims.. not me.
edit:
by the way since you guys seem so interested in replying back to me ?
how about answering one of the many topics were i asked for help ?
seems you guys know sooooo much about this yet i am still waiting like a week later to flash my phone LOL

Yes 64bit or not.... i still think Marshmallow would be interesting for our phone.
I know almost nothing about that update though so i have no idea if it's going to work
very well for our low spec phone.
which is why i came to hear from you guys that DO know this stuff

Honestly I have it (Marshmallow) on my N5 and its pretty decent. Certainly not worth a bump to 6.0 IMHO maybe 5.3??? Its just a very polished version of lollipop as far as I can see...

Thread cleaned of the stupidity and childish bickering... Back on-topic now thanks guys.

so what MameTozhio said is fact then ?
oh ok then..
well i change my mind then i see no point in getting this update my phone only has one gig of ram
and 64bit is only for devices with lots of ram..
childish bickering ?
or some guy making bold claims that no on is allowed to refute ?
edit:
By the way i proved it (and mods deleted it)
but for giggles i google'd it and hit no. 1
http://www.osnews.com/story/5768/Are_64-bit_Binaries_Really_Slower_than_32-bit_Binaries_
seems i am not the only one who actually checked LOL
and i quote the guy..
I wondered if it would be best to compile my applications in 32-bit mode or 64-bit mode. The modern dogma is that 32-bit applications are faster, and that 64-bit imposes a performance penalty. Time and time again I found people making the assertion that 64-bit binaries were slower, but I found no benchmarks to back that up. It seemed it could be another case of rumor taken as fact.

Perhaps you should read more carefully...
I said that I had cleaned the thread of the stupidity and childish bickering.
Do you see your posts removed or are they still visible?
Clearly then, I wasn't referring to you.

i support you @xpmule, too many people talking everywhere without a proper knowledge

well i was saying that guy posted it should be slower pretty much and i thought hey you know what ?
Let's not jump to conclusions and wait and see.. Let's actually check.
And i tried to post some example about how 64bit myths are spread.
It's really up to each program out there as to whether it will benefit or not.
And if you listened to that guy earlier many of you would probably just oh well i don't want that update then.
With out even checking.. to see if it was better etc.
64bit vs 32bit touches a nerve on the web and i didn't want to stir up some drama for you guys here.
If i did then you all have my apologies
i say let's check it out and maybe do some benchmarks etc and see how it goes.
PS:
I am trying to leave this topic alone i don't want to agitate the mods (more than i prob have already)

MUST SEE, I SEEN wm6iPhone

Ok gentleman. The guy that made the post about the dual OS iPh**e is not lying! I own a Computer Prog. Company in Kingsport TN that doe sub contract work for Sony Inc. The guys actually called and told my assistant to give me a message about it but I blew it off. They came to my office four times and I finally met with them. This things real. Three of my techs here checked it out and its no joke. Everything the kid said holds up. Weve had it three days now and still dont know alot. Not used to PPC's. We specialize in programming for Sony products, Laptops, Playstation etc. The kid told me about this sight and said some gelp may be available. Heres what weve got so far. On startup it brings up a dual bootloader screen. The htc versions is running amazing. Its running overclocked at 623mhz while the radio still runs at normal rate. This is strange because there is no type of over clocking software anywhere on the device. Also accelerometer is inactive on htc rom. Screen/light sensors work on both. iPhone side. Safari is somehow flash and java enabled. itunes is not here anymore. Its actually registered thru apple for warranty which im sure is void. works on gsm network as well as cdma like it says. now internal time. remember my techs are not ppc specialists. It appears ro have two processors tied into each other. one is original one appears to be custom. also there is some extra wiring tied into the screen running off an unknown circuit board which was def placed there aftermarket style. Also the everything seems to be somehow tied into this circuit board & and the board is a phenomenal custom job. Like I said, we do hot specialize in programming for ppc. I am willing and have rights to send this to an experienced and I mean GENIUS, programmer to work with this. Only condition is you must reside in the US OR CANADA, and you must sign a predrawn contract which you may print off, sign, and scan and email or fax back. It just says you will send it back, working or not. By the way, I contacted the creator of this & the reason it wasnt online or advertised is due to apples long arm. If there pulling hair over icons then theyd draw blood for this. Which brings me to this. NO PICS WILL BE PUBLICLY POSTED. I will email detailed video to any senior member only who honestly believes they can help make this widely available and rip off App** short leash. Im sorry to any non senior member but i dont wana email a video to an apple attorney. So post your thoughts but only serious requests for Photos.
can u email them to me
is it me? or does this person write awfully similar to the other person who started this whole wm6 iphone stuff
Email?
Yes. PM your email add to me & Ill do by Monday, possibly tonight. One of my techs is working on a few extremely detailed vids of External & Internal , pics are to easy to fake & I want no misconceptions about how phenomenal this thing is. I also do not want it released to anyone after I send it to you. So please dont redistribute the vids.
Small Minds or Jealousy
WOW man. I think your right! The T's in both posts are identical! Are you just jealous or to small minded to think someones smart enough to do this? Just because your not talented enough to conceive this idea, doesn't mean it's not possible. Email me the videos ASAP and we'll take a look at it over here at TechRev. Try to get it done by tomorrow please.
If this works. I will get my iphone this week!
THis is a hoax. Don't buy it.

take a look at the posts by "technology" in the smartphone threads somewhere. Seems to be the same spammer.
And do you think your 2 posts are what he was looking for in a "senior member"?
Why should it not be posible with dual boot. Apple did it with their computers and said it could not run Windows then someone figgured out how to and they released theire version. now the iphone maybe can do the same. Apple are prob just waiting for someone to do it for them before releasing their own version. Why they wait... well they might not wan't to be the once making it work as it might seam like an attack on MS. And by doing these dual boot they get costumers that are using MS products to swap to Apple because they can us the MS on Apple iPhone or computers. this way Apple gets a part of a market they would not gotten with only their OS running.
but yes I'd like to see some real prof of it working before I will be convinced... but it's possible that it's true. Because Jobs wants a bigger marked
I just find it strange that the videos aren't open not even on a private server and streamed to others...and the posts seem spammish I will point out some inaccuracies in grammar and spelling

on first glance its almost like the post was written from an iPhone or a touch screen winmo device. That said, the likelihood that it is a possible theme customization for the iphone is pretty high and not a modded htc device. Most developers, even the ones that develop themes for iphones, also display their pictures and such. So um...
This is highly suspicious if it is legit, prove it.
Not used to PPC's ????
Well I need some gelp to understand all this....
How could this be possible? He'd need to have the sources for WM6 to port it to the iPhones Samsung processor which is ARM11 unlike the present gen WM6 based Samsung processors which are ARM9. This seriously sounds like its a scam.
Also, why would an apple product NOT have iTunes which is one of the biggest selling points of the iPhone?
I'd be interested to see some pictures including a view of how thick it is, and how large the screen is/how much of the front of the device the screen takes up...

i do not know nor have i ever met this poster, and if he thinks my idea is plausible then i thanks him. now on to other matters; as for the guy who spoke of porting the WM6 ARM9 processor to the iphones ARM11 there has never been a time when a OS complained of having too much resources as i dont think that would be a problem. if you search the threads and read my original post you would see that i threw out a hypothetical and asked if it was possible and then asked if (and gave praises to the intelligence) anyone could do it. then i spoke of dual booting the iphone and provided links where the iphone has been partitioned, jailbreaked and running 2firmware, heck i even threw in a firmware builder link so if anyone just wanted to modify a iphone firmware to be WM6 then they could do that; again all i see you doing is swapping the system files, Mac HD for windows folder etc.

I'm not going to comment either way on the plausibility of the topic of this thread, but I would like to point out that I can think of several legacy MS OS's that would not run on newer hardware without a patch or just would not run right at all.

Cynical
Perhaps I am just getting old and cynical, but in my experience most individuals who have risen to any kind of high office or have been successful in business to the degree that our friend suggests have actually mastered the basics of spelling and punctuation.
I have to remind my 11 year old son to remember paragraphs, capital letters and apostrophes - I would expect better from the owner of a 'Computer Prog. Company in Kingsport TN that doe sub contract work for Sony Inc.'

Could we get MeeGo on our Hero?

Hey guys,
Now, I understand that we have issues porting even other Android builds over to our phone so I'm not holding my breath. I am curious to see if we could possibly get MeeGo ported over though. I am going to download some things and play around with it tonight if I get a chance but until then, any thoughts?
And nobody say, "Why would you want to?" or anything like that. It's just something fun to play around with.
I'd be up for helping in some way. To be honest though, I don't know if our phone could power it, unfortunately. It so far is being only made to run on devices with Intel Atom CPU's and the Nokia N900... which I'm almost positive has a stronger CPU than the Hero. But nonetheless, we can try

The N900 has a 600Mhz CPU. Not sure if it's the OMAP3 that's in the Droid or not but it's not too much more powerful. It does have 1GB of memory though which may or may not hurt.
Ok. Maybe we'll have overclocking accomplished by then which would help. Curious, which build of MeeGo would we use? The one for the N900 or the Atom? I'm guessing the N900, correct?

This isn't just something to do for fun, actually. It would be really beneficial to have a REAL platform on the Hero, not just this hokey-pokey malware playground known as Android. It was fun to play with but lets face it - Linux Applications have near-infinite trust, familiarity, reliability, security, and usability compared to this zoo of "apps". The day Android allows me to CONTROL which permissions an app may access, as opposed to just staring at a blanket list with a "install" or "don't install" option then I'll revisit this - in the meantime give me apt and a debian respository controlled by trustworthy developers!
You can't control what permissions your apps have?

Without nit-picking some of that apart for accuracy, I get the jist of what you are saying and I can definitely get behind some MeeGo goodness on the Hero. I'm a Debian junkie too, I love my apt as much as the next guy, but I can't help but think that Android is a pretty damn good fit for a phone. If we were talking about a tablet or something more compute-centric, give me a full blown distro, definitely. For something like my phone which I use for music, messaging, notes, and phone calls, I'm really quite happy with Android, even with it's shortcomings.
The right tool for the job. Although I'm always down with getting Debian to work on ANYTHING I can.... just because I can, I'm happy with Android on my phone. (CM6 makes mouth happy)
If a few peeps want to get serious about this and maybe have some ideas on drivers (besides the touch panel), count me in. I work on a Debian desktop every single day of my life.
Ah Debian...
If I'm not mistaken we have a port of Debian with lxde.
But I do think Android works more then well enough and as for malware you have to keep in mind this is just like any other os. You deal with what you install, always research what you install before you go about doing so.

Absolutely. I do not care if you are running OpenBSD for f's sake - if someone decides to place some crapware into your /usr/ports and you decide to blindly compile / install it, then you are just as susceptible to problems as you are on a Windows XP box. At least Android gives you the benefit of blatantly telling you what the app is going to be grated access to by YOU, the user.

Things that need to be improved for future Development

First i must give a standing ovation to the DARK FORCES TEAM (D.F.T.) on there accomplishment on the win phone 7 os as i am very impressed with performance.
Second my recommendations to improve the future builds.
1 change the phone identification in the os from HTCLEO to HD7 so as u no longer have to go through as much trouble to activate live services.
2. make os preactivated or precracked for live services. (This May Seem as a difficult task but in actuality its not.. A good Example would be windows xp as many people have made various keygens and cracks to bypass activation, there is even a hacked version of xp where it is preactivated with genuine certificates working so dont tell me it cant be done, if anything u could come up with a registry patch that activates win phone 7's os,
if u were able to accomplish these 2 things DFT you would be the gods of Phone modding, hacking, integration, and os development (Although many already think of u as such but why not take it to the next level?)
Your requests clearly tend into the "hacking" and "warez" direction. I don´t think both of your requests will be easily fulfilled, and if, you won´t find the solution here at xda.
From my gutt feeling, I believe that the current solution stays in the grey zone where all the "classic" flashing, hacking, tweaking and modding has been for years, but overriding activation routines breaks laws.
Frankly spoken, getting the activation code from the OS maker is not a big issue as of now. In a year or two, many HD2 users will have moved on, either to Android, or maybe to WP7, or iOS, who knows - but HD2 will be outdated sometime.
I myself would much more prefer to get a properly working camera, that´s it.
very understandable about the law issues, but correct me if im wrong, did we not already break the laws by customizing the os in the beginning??? im not the most knowledgeable on this and by no means do i want to start a controversy, i just figure if we have already come this far go all the way..
Well... I'm pretty sure there is no law against porting OS's to devices besides the fact that it could break your warranty.
And Microsoft said they would not add the WP7 update to previous devices because it doesn't meet their hardware standards, but they never said it would be ported on to previous devices.
Furthermore, at the moment you have to call Microsoft for an activation key that they generate on the spot for any phone, model, etc... They even ask if you need a key before asking for your name, email, phone number and other information (at least they did for me), so in a way, they are promoting this behaviour.
So there is nothing completely wrong with doing this at all, but it sounds like you just don't want to call Microsoft for key that takes all of 5 minutes.
And what tictac0566 is right. All we do is take their OS and move it to our phone. That's like installing Windows 7 to your exclusive Dell Windows XP.
And we have not customised the OS that much as of yet.

Forgive some of the answers, we don't mean to be mean . You see, sometimes it's difficult to distinguish most of the good intentions in touchy subjects like this one. It might be that it has been asked repeatedly with it only ending on a flame war or perhaps something along the lines and some are getting tired of it. It's not your fault bro.
Let me put it into perspective though, as far as I'm concerned, yes.. technically speaking, porting WP7 goes against the licensing terms. As a matter of fact, we aren't really supposed to do it at all. But then again, the same can be said about Winmo and all its variants.
In the past MS has stated that as long as only the software that has been shipped on the cellphone is included sans any commercial software you'd have to buy normally, then it's a go. I believe we could assume the same about WP7 for the time being. Asides it helps them find bugs faster and treat like a big beta-testing but just in real life by XDA.
I believe Microsoft isn't much bothered by it or rather is not a threat. But the moment you mess with it's DRM or rather the services (XBOX mainly to be specific) being protected by whatever algorithm Microsoft has put in place it then you are already touching their crown jewel.
Hacking the device for tiles is not a priority for MS, but hack the Live services and this can only assure or give the impression anyone can tinker enough to hack to cheat on the Live service (which is rather amusing, since hacking gamer points and scores is just so wrong in so many levels).
I'd say it's just like the Xbox console. As long as you don't mess with Xbox Live, then most of the hacks aren't really blocked unlike Sony, which sued the pants off everyone and now that is why the PS3 was gutted to pieces recently. I hope that helps a little more.

[Q] Ugh no NVFlash, is there?

Has anyone been successful in booting into APX/NVFlash mode on this? I have one ordered and already have a little buyers remorse.. blobs and all that junk, its rather pathetic. No OC kernel either, eh? Coming from a 1.7ghz gtab, this might be unusable! Well, we'll see. Are there any custom branches of the asus source? Maybe we can get a few things working like gpu/cpu oc to t25 standards.
Currently nvflash is locked. Overclocked kernals are coming i've heard. Alot of the problems with really custom stuff is the lack of source code.
Woops lost my intended post.. was something to the tune of how nvflash has saved many gtabs from being bricked.. seriously, its a great tool. I'm sure its a Google thing, maybe one of their Honeycomb decrees. Probably thinking of how nvflash and Windows 8 would come into play..
Google is really getting on my nerves... they're starting to get the "we know better than you, so here" attitude that Apple has. Catch the diss on Microsoft, regarding their 'torture' of users by letting them manage things? Ugh. Google can't play the bash ms card, its ****ing old. Can't believe I bought another tegra tab.. who wants?

I think its the company that makes the device that is blocking nvflash not google.

I said I can't believe I bought another Tehran tab. Key word is another. Nvidia is starting to pull their antics with gb video decoding drivers for the harmony board. By antics, I mean what they've (and ATI) been doing with their linux video drivers - not supporting older hardware and not releasing source so consumers can create their own drivers for 'older' hardware - ie harmony based devices.
I might only have a use for an ipad as a dog toy/frisbee - I have a pitbull and a Dogo Argentino, itd be funny.
I was done with my rant.. but I suppose you prolonged it.
BTW: I did read up. I found no info on the issue of NVFlash. Have a Xoom, Gtab, and now one of these wonderful tablets. So far, the gtab is the most fun. Can the Asus get 4700 in quadrant? Do you see it ever being that fast? You're right about lack of alternatives, I suppose there is the Hardkernel odroids for someone like me, new device has a modular cpu board.
I'll be sure to at least try to get nvflash working. Does anyone have a bootloader they could post up? Usually viewing in a hex editor can give you a clue as to what the boot scenarios could be.
There's a thread over in development where several people tried to get nvflash going. Their opinions in the end were nvflash is locked and you need some sort of signed key to use it. Any nvflash commands tried, failed.
It may be possible that in the future asus may provide the key, but from their response to the people who bricked via the ota update (just having them rma the device), it doesn't seem like it.
You probably need a dev bootloader. This is based on the Ventana board, right? Another reason could be that the nvflash tool doesn't support ext* fs, but I doubt that. If Asus releases a tegra2 linux netbook, based on the same Ventana board, things could get better. Thanks for the heads up. I'll check out the development section
I know quadrant is pretty cool benchmarking tool but you might want to give this a try too. Grab a friend, load the same movie up on the Gtab and the Transformer, place both the devices three feet in front of you flat on a table and ask your friend which one is better.
I had to return my GTab when my girlfriend commented that having a tablet that can't actually be seen unless held at the right angle directly in front of you is rather useless.
The Transformer is a brand new tablet with an active, if somewhat still empty handed, community behind it. Out of the box though, using the default software, it's an entirely useable system that does exactly what I want it too (in my case quickly display photos, web browsing, youtubing and web surfing). I suspect three months from now it'll have some solid development work behind it since all of the alternatives have managed to overlook the importance of price point as well as innovation in their scheduled releases.
i just downloaded nvflash and just got my root was easy as pie rooted in literally in five minutes would have been 2 minutes but my computer is a bit slow let me know if you would like some links i got it to work

Windows 8 and Windows phone 8

Hi some time ago when windows 8.1 was still called blue there were some rumours that Micro$oft will merge its two platforms. Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 would share she same Metro apps. This move should give M$ edge over Apple where you could have best of both worlds on single device. It seems now that this idea has been lost somewhere in 8.1 changelog.
So I was looking for revolution but it seems that we will receive just evolution. Oh and for most of the portals major change is the start button! Really?!
You seem to be suffering from some keyboard defect. I suggest you look into that. In the meantime, get back under your bridge.
Hi. Thank you for your reply. My post was to start a discussion about the features of new update and about lack of some expected ones (which maybe still will be announced).
And what was the purpose of your reply?
It was never said that wp8 and w8 would become one and the same. You have misunderstood. Some of the new windows runtime features are coming to windows phone and the services offered were to be merged, but the operating systems themselves were to remain seperate.
>Some of the new windows runtime features are coming to windows phone and the services offered were to be merged, but the operating systems themselves were to remain desperate.
that way I had to misunderstood this (would be a great idea thou). Sort of like universal apps shared between iphone and ipad) I seen few apps which are being announced as both windows 8 and windows phone 8 (check co-pilot or halo) which probably kept me in believing in this. Oh well we will see where windows 8 will evolve.

iPhone and iPad share apps simply because they are the same operating system. The iPad is just a giant iPhone. its the same as how one android phone and another share apps, they are the same thing.
Windows phone and windows 8 are not.
The desperate thing I said above, may be true but autocorrect fail, wrote it from my nexus this morning.

Purpose of his post is that you stop using that $ instead of S.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
Oh. I am sorry I didn't know that I hurt his / yours religious feelings.
Unless of course this gentleman refers to his home as "under the bridge" I read his post as simple attempt to offend.
In light of recent E3 news (xbox one- drm management, activation fees, price, Internet connection requirement to work, always-on camera pointing your face and listening all the time which you cannot just unplug) I thing that using $ instead of S is good way to comment the situation.
To end this pointless conversation - unless there there is a XDA rule which prohibits me to do so then please stop trolling and trying to offend other forum members.
Now coming back to 8.1 - is this correct what I understood from brief installation description that if you install this release you will have to reinstall all the programs if you would like to install final release?
"M$" and similar (and I'd apply this statement even to, for example, "$ony" which is a company I personally detest) is most commonly used as trolling behavior online. This is doubly true in a forum devoted to discussing Microsoft products. It's possible you had, and still have, a legit intention to create a meaningful discussion. However, it looked (and to an extent, still looks) like you're merely trying to stir up trouble.
I agree that the XbOne restrictions are nasty, but I have no intention of buying one, and this forum has nothing to do with that product.
The only hint I ever saw regarding merging the app models was a job posting about installing both XAP and APPX packages on the same platform. That's interesting, and does imply a merged app platform, but there's no guarantee it was even going to happen, much less when. To the best of my knowledge, Microsoft never officially said anything to the effect of "we will do this" although there's been rampant speculation since the Win8 beta days.
You are right. I has never been said officially thus my expectations and hopes to see any bits of confirmation during the press conference. When I haven seen any I asked the question here. Still must say I am looking forward this update (probably not for first public beta - if the rumours are true that you will have to reinstall all your applications).
Personally I believe that The Redmond company will need stronger impact to conquer more market right now windows 8 is getting the love it should receive as is being designed for touch but mostly is being use on non-touchscreen laptops and PC. Marked wasn't ready for this. So right approach would be IMO to get more tablet users on their side (look at the latest adverts windows 8 vs iPad). If 8" tablets market is good for win8 is another discussion thou.
But coming back to subject. Has this been confirm that win 8.1 final version cannot be I painless way installed on top of preview?
Cheers
In practice, it's pretty much always possible to do an in-place upgrade via tweaking a few files in the installer or a value in the registry. However, in-place upgrades are a bad enough idea even when they're supported; I really can't endorse doing it on your main system. I may well install the preview in a VM, though.
I think in this case I will rather wait for official final release. Hdd restrictions will not allow me to have more fun on vm. I am already running win8 on bootcamp so no more complications are required
Also partially as an answer to my initial question it has been announced that new halo game for win 8 and win phone 8 will not be a cross buy. These will be two independent apps so no one unified system for now at least.
Yeah, that's been the case for a number of games already. On the plus side, the games *can* still share data between platforms if you have it on boath, and you can earn achievemnts on both... which would matter more if I gave a damn about gamerscore (I've got like 3500, LOL) but some people really care.
Hi all. There is still light at the end of the tunnel (hope it's not a train
