A Camera App for the GT-i9500 ( recommendations ) - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

We all know that most our photos get blury because of the shutter speed which is 1-2 seconds. Nobody found a way to reduce this speed to zero, but this phone's camera is still not very bad. So I would like to question all the i9500 users, what is the best camera app for this phone on KitKat? Or are there any mods or any other things that increase photo quality? I know how to play with the settings, so don't recommend me to do this. Stock settings are medium.
I am also using A Better Camera from the playsotre. But anyway, I am wondering if there are ways to increase our camera.
Thanks in advance!

BEST Camera Settings?

Just wondering what your camera settings are and what do you think is the best quality wise. Because the camera on the Wing seems kinda low quality for 2.0mp
There are a couple of settings you can do to improve video quality, but not picture quality as far as I know.
My phone takes great pictures as long as they are well lit... Any camera will have poor picture quality when there isn't enough light ..
do you think maybe thats the problem? Try taking the same picture twice ... once with lots of lights and then without as many lights and see what the results are.
In addition to the question above, quality of picture is very blurry taken at close range. The tilt has auto focus therefore it is very clear. Is there anything we can do to take close range pictures (handwritten notes, newspaper ads...) a lot crispier on the Wing? Thank you guys.
i'm using These Setting right now, seem to do pretty good pics, even though a bit smaill, havent had a chance to play around with it much

Increase camera shutter speed

Is there any way to increase the camera shutter speed? I want to capture pictures faster and clearer. Pictures I'm taking seem to have a tendency to blur if I don't have completely steady hands. It seems even slower than my GS2, and much slower than my gf's Note 2. I've tried some apps such as the highly rated procapture and camera fv-5 but with unsatisfying results. I just want to get more out of my phone not trying to insult the Nexus 4 or anything...so don't flame me. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
I agree with you. I wish to use the stock camera app. as it uses complete screen without any cluttered menus but its shutter speed is very slow..due to its focusing. I know ppl will flame by saying it needs time to focus but why does it has to be with Nexus 4 only? All other high spec'd phones cameras take shots very quickly. The hardware is of course very capable...its just the scripting of stock app I guess.
Moreover for the shaky pics.I use third party Cam Apps like Camera FZ Zoom and ProCapture (tried a few others too but they were just ok), the pictures turn out to be better than stock.
If only this is fixable, i have missed so many shots because of such long period to focusa nd then take a pic. Infact by the time that is done, i end up getting hazy pics anyways.
No. If there is someone hasn't come up with one. The specs of the camera is determined by the hardware and the software probably already uses it to its full capability despite other options which can be set by the user in the camera app.
I agree that the camera tends to default to slower shutter speeds. Of course faster shutter speeds raise ISO which results in more noise.
What was unsatisfactory about your experience with FV5. My recollection is that it allows you to hard set the ISO higher which will result in faster shutter speeds.
Also the 'action' mode on the stock camera will try to use faster shutter speeds as well.

No matter what I do, it's just really slow. I really think it's just the camera's not that amazing. It's satisfactory and is be able to to take pictures though; I guess that's what counts. I mean this was a budget phone, how can you sell it for 349 off contract, that's amazing. You have to skimp somewhere. Doesn't hold a candle to the Note 2 though sadly. That phone can burst shot a whole bunch of pictures in a millisec. I hope I'm wrong though and our developers can figure out a way to improve this phone's camera.

Download FAST BURST CAMERA from app store. It will not only give you BURST MODE but also crazily increase the shutter speed. Try it.

But at the cost of seriously downsampled resolution.

I realized, that when you put the scene mode to sunset mode. the shutter speed will stick at 1/20 all the time. which is pretty good.
will be my default mode from here now on. dont worry about the white balance. its pretty ok.

[Q] Some questions before purchase

Is shutter speed already fixed in newest update?
when i click the photo button is there still a delay in making the photo?
Secondly, i like the slowmotion capabilities. IS there a app that lets you edit speeds like on the htc one? so you can select wich parts are played in normal speed and wich part is in slow motion?
no replies at all?
no one knows a software or fix or rom?
Wait.
I went from a Galaxy S2 to S4 Which was a huge improvement on itself and Camera stutter isn't a huge deal for me since it takes half a second or less to focus and take a photo and If you really want to capture alot of photos in a short time, Well there is Burst mode for you!
There is already options for Slow motion speeds (2x, 4x and 8x)
This is my personal opinion and i think the camera is perfectly fine & You give people more time to see your post, Don't be impatient.
what about software? is there software to edit frames of a video?
to make a video play faster for a large part?

Shutter lag, blurry photos - possible to fix?

I have never seen a high-end phone produce such bad photos, coming from an iPhone 5, 4S, HTC One X and HTC One... The Galaxy S4 turned out to be a huge disappointment contrary to the reviews I've read. I checked updates and I am running the latest updates so I am unsure what else I can do except trade this phone away for something else.... Any insight?

I can't search effectively and creating this thread didn't hint at any similar-created threads. Could you please point me to those discussions?

I just put "photo" in the search box in the 'General" section and at least 4 relevant posts came up on the front search page alone with "camera" or "photo" in the thread title. Reading through them should help you to better understand the situation. There isn't a "one fix" situation for your issue that is why it is important you read through the material available so you can see what you need to try and what works for you. Good luck.
To be fair the other threads don't contain a "fix" other than people in general bashing users claiming users coming from iPhone's don't know how to shoot.
This thread might be useful for finding out some sort of real solution to the issue.
For me, throwing the S4 into "Active" or "Sports" mode generally tends to help slightly. From what I can tell it's the actual camera app itself. The camera itself is superior to iPhone 4S and 5's camera. It's actually the same camera but a newer version more or less. It has a faster shutter speed and better fstop and such. Just I believe the camera software (Both Stock-Based rom and on CM10.1) are both slow to react. Usually in "Auto" it will see fast moving objects and the phone will adjust the shutter speed to be quicker. From what I can tell the Auto setting is just very slow to react and not as sensitive as what I was used to on the iPhone's camera app. Why manually setting "sport" seems to work for me as it tells the camera to use a higher shutter speed and doesn't have to figure it out on its own. Same deal goes for dark photos, which I get ALOT of. Manually changing the settings results in a good photo, however "Auto" seems to be playing stupid and not adjusting parameters the way that I'm used to. Some might be fine with it and used to it, but having used the iOS camera for years I'm not used to having to manually adjust all my settings to take a quick photo.

Thanks for that, appreciate it. I too will manually play with the default settings to see if they can adjust the photo better. Coming from an iPhone and HTC One X/One, the phones just all react and produce stunning images with minimal effort (and I don't mean filters, the actual photo quality is superb under the right angles/lighting).

Agreed. There is definitely a software lag as the phone ties to determine for itself what all the lighting conditions are, etc. Also, if you are using a slower external card, you will be much better off using the internal storage for photos so there is less wait time while the app writes the image.

Phone is saving to device so it isn't a write to memory problem. Just wish the software was better optimized if the shutter lag is not the hardware.
sport mode works best to reduce shutter lag; auto will cycle through modes and keep changing variables of shutter speed and ISO (aperture is fixed).
i would like to see if there is a way to dedicate more processors to the camera app, and crank up the processor speed when the camera app is opened (ie to 100%), that would fix the lag. is there a way to do this?

[Q] Camera performance after Jishnu/xdabebb mod?

Hi all, I 've been thinking of buying a new phone & I really like the g2 very much but the only thing that is stopping me is the camera performance.
Can someone please tell me after the Jishu/xdadebb mod how is the camera performance under low light, how is the autofocus in low light also is the continuous autofocus in the video problem resolved. How much is the shutter lag after the mod.
I really want to buy this device for the camera & its under my budget if the camera ain't good enough even after the mods I may go with oppo find 7a/oneplus one which are in the same budget but have better camera.
I dont capture my photos in low light. But the camera is pretty amazing with xdadebb mod, and Mi2Raw enables the G2 to capture raw footage as well.
The G2 and G3 has the same camera sensor, just that the G3 has a Z-Axis image stabiliser and laser autofocus. So if I were you, I'll go look at those camera comparisons on review sites comparing the G3, OnePlus One and the Oppo.
Edit: Video performance is pretty good too. xdadebb camera mod allows for tap to focus in video to focus your subject and it works well. It has object tracking too!
Edit 2: With dorimanx's kernel, I was able to turn down the mic gain when I was at a concert. That + the stereo recording = pretty awesome recording
Thanks @lowjinyik.
Anyone else using these mods please comment about the low light performace after the mod.
I haven't tried taking pictures in low-light conditions yet, I should, will do and compare later but under bright, sunshine outdoor, with Normal mode, I see virtually no difference in term of performance and image quality. There are several features that I haven't tried out yet.

The low light camera quality is good. The mod makes very little difference to low light pictures.
Thanks guys for your responses. I think I might go with oppo find7. It's better than the g2 in every aspect except battery life & OS updates. Which can be taken care by the VOOC charger & custom roms respectively.
