Is there any way to increase the camera shutter speed? I want to capture pictures faster and clearer. Pictures I'm taking seem to have a tendency to blur if I don't have completely steady hands. It seems even slower than my GS2, and much slower than my gf's Note 2. I've tried some apps such as the highly rated procapture and camera fv-5 but with unsatisfying results. I just want to get more out of my phone not trying to insult the Nexus 4 or anything...so don't flame me. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
I agree with you. I wish to use the stock camera app. as it uses complete screen without any cluttered menus but its shutter speed is very slow..due to its focusing. I know ppl will flame by saying it needs time to focus but why does it has to be with Nexus 4 only? All other high spec'd phones cameras take shots very quickly. The hardware is of course very capable...its just the scripting of stock app I guess.
Moreover for the shaky pics.I use third party Cam Apps like Camera FZ Zoom and ProCapture (tried a few others too but they were just ok), the pictures turn out to be better than stock.
If only this is fixable, i have missed so many shots because of such long period to focusa nd then take a pic. Infact by the time that is done, i end up getting hazy pics anyways.
No. If there is someone hasn't come up with one. The specs of the camera is determined by the hardware and the software probably already uses it to its full capability despite other options which can be set by the user in the camera app.
I agree that the camera tends to default to slower shutter speeds. Of course faster shutter speeds raise ISO which results in more noise.
What was unsatisfactory about your experience with FV5. My recollection is that it allows you to hard set the ISO higher which will result in faster shutter speeds.
Also the 'action' mode on the stock camera will try to use faster shutter speeds as well.

I mean this was a budget phone, how can you sell it for 349 off contract, that's amazing. You have to skimp somewhere. Doesn't hold a candle to the Note 2 though sadly. That phone can burst shot a whole bunch of pictures in a millisec. I hope I'm wrong though and our developers can figure out a way to improve this phone's camera.

I realized, that when you put the scene mode to sunset mode. the shutter speed will stick at 1/20 all the time. which is pretty good.
will be my default mode from here now on. dont worry about the white balance. its pretty ok.

No issues here either. My pictures come out crystal clear. Lay off the cocaine and your hands wont shake so much
mine is the same, has a white haze in any pic i take. i think it has something to do with the 2.1 builds.

The HTC hero definitely has a poor quality camera. It is because the light sensor has trouble working too well in dark environments. Also, the shutter speed is very very slow, the slowest shutter speed of any digital camera i've ever used on any phone.
On 2.1(any rom) it seems the shutter speed is even slower. This is probably due to a bug in the 2.1 camera driver.
Take a picture on your HTC hero with 2.1 of something that's moving. I guarantee you it will be VERY blurry. Take it with 1.5, it will still be blurry, but not nearly so much.
Now take it with, for example, the droid. It will come out perfectly on the motorola droid running 2.1 with it's 5MP camera.

What he said. I was almost as disappointed with the Hero camera as I was with the Moment. However if you set it to 800 and make sure you change the lighting manually too you can take pretty good pics. Not as good as we would all like, but still good.

first just becuase it has 5 MP doesnt mean a dam thing I can get the same quality photo from a 2mp point and shoot as I can from my 24.5mp DSLR all the MP really mean is that you can enlarge the photo more without degredation.
second follow the instructions above they will gain you a few stops of shutter speed since being on auto probably keeps it at around 200-400 as that is normal native ISO.
after that go into settings and unless you are taking a bunch of photos of landscapes change your metering mode to center or spot if you are mainly taking photos of people then this is going to give you a better exposure of the person.
in my opinion this is why cell phones dont need these kinds of cameras on them. they give a more functional and customizable camera and instead of trying to understand basic camera functions people are just going to say "this camera is crap"

ummmm no they wont....... they cant be the laws of physics wont allow a lens that is the size of a thumb tack to reproduce and image as well as an optically aligned lens no amount of software can fix opticaly inferiorority.

I agree. Not every idiot with a camera is a photographer. Mostly they're just idiots.
There's just no way around it, the Hero's camera is rather disappointing hardware wise, however it is on par with most other (lower end) cell phone cameras. It works for quick snapshots like it was designed, so I don't really complain.

Exactly. It is what it IS. It's not MEANT to take professional grade wedding photos...or photos that you plan to keep forever. It's meant for pictures to be shared on facebook, or flickr. More for social networking than 'hey, let's take all our vacation photos with the phone!'.

That is ridiculous. So what if i'm not a "professional" photographer. I STILL WANT high quality images when I DO decide to take a photo.
And guess what, the Motorola Droid, which is a cellphone if I am not mistaken..., can take pictures that are FAR higher quality than the HTC Hero.
The reason the hero's camera is so terrible is because of
1. The light sensor
2. Shutter speed
Now maybe I am wrong and the Droid really is a digital camera and that's why it is higher quality, but I have a feeling that HTC just put a ****ty camera on this phone...
I just bought a new camera to tote around mainly for my wife. I thought it was a pretty good camera, it's a fuji 14mp point and shoot. I've had one in the past which was pretty good.
Anyway, my point being my freaking camera on my note takes much better pictures than this camera does. I would think a dedicated camera would be the winner but Samsung did a good job here.
I've seen threads past complaining about the notes camera but mine takes great pics. Needless to sat wife still asks for the phone to take pics. That was a waste of money

Try comparing the two in conditions with poor lighting, particularly in any scenario that would require a flash or longer exposure.
When it comes to camera's, opposed to what alot of people think, the amount of megapixels you have isn't important at all. What's more important is the lens, and how big it is. The lighting, shutter time etc..
Just like knightnz said, the fuji would probably come out on top in "harder" to capture pictures.
Still I have to agree, the Note takes amazing pictures.

I mean they are coming out with a friggin 41mp camera soon on a phone at that! Why the need for high mp if they don't affect quality?

It's not like the phone takes a 2GB 41 mp jpeg lol. It's a new type of technology that combines pixles in such a way that it creates a 5-8mp file with lossless 4x zoom and greatly reduced noise.
The *real* breakthrough is the size of the lense and the amount of light it lets in. I've seen some sample pictures and it has a mean DOF effect and almost no noise.
Back to the point. The notes camera is great and it is better than a few point and shoots that my friends have, I just wish there was image stabilisation but that's just software right?

Well, the best image stabilisation is actually hardware. It is a prism that moves based on a gyroscope to compensate for all camera movements. Effectively it keeps the physical focus point where it was and moves it slowly to where it now is, avoiding the quick shake caused by your movements. Software can only compensate slightly by moving the physical focus around in a similar way in a larger recorded image.
The best I have ever had is in my Sony HandyCam. It was the bees knees when I bought it many years ago. Full 1080p video with a superb and huge Carl Zeiss lens. Dark shots were great and better than most other cameras, and it even does a fair IR night mode. The videos are very stable as long as you do not do any large swings. The 10x optical zoom is also fantastic.
Now my Note stands in, but it will never replace the HC because of the poorer dark videos, lack of zoom, and the complete lack of stabilisation. Having said that, it is used a hell of a lot more as a camera and video cam, because it is always with me!

The camera is good enough.
But when you see your note camera taking better pictures than stand alone point and shoot snapper, you know you have crap point and shoot camera or the person taking photographs is not taking pictures properly.
Under good light conditions, these modern snappers will match the P&S sensor quality if you know what you are doing. Picture quality varies greatly by simple choice of settings by the person taking pictures on Note. Leave it at auto and you will not get the best results in tricky conditions. You also need steady hands to get good snaps from Note camera.
But overall, its good enough to be good casual snapper.
But if you start comparing Note against even older good compact cameras like Panasonic ZS7 (which is now outdated), its not even close. These point and shoot cameras will outperform Note under any condition. Leave alone more expensive and also cameras with newer better sensors available today.
The good thing about Note camera is that it takes more than decent pictures with relatively accurate colour reproduction unlike some other phone cameras.

In other areas: I realise now that the stabilisation is hardware but you'd be SO suprised at how much software effects the video quality. I have 2 examples.
My old HD2 on windows mobile or android had TERRIBLE low light quality, frame rate dropped down to 9/10 fps, image noise was just unacceptable. -->
Updated to windows phone 7, and low light was quality is insane now. did not drop a single frame. The quality even went up to full 720p (which was not possible before)
I've even made some short movies with it because the low light was so good.

Second example is my transformer prime. Same thing. On Honeycomb terrible fps in low light and a whole heap of noise ---> ICS update and the camera was a different beast.

I was hoping that till trying ICS leak but shutter lag is still same as GB... Losing my hope... Thats why i am using Fast Burst Camera app to catch the moment but limited to 1 mpx...

thats because its a leak and hasnt got the fully working driverset
has anyone been able to find a video camera app that solves the slow stock video camera focusing? on my g2, it takes up to 8 sec for the camera in 1080p 60fps mode to focus. and you have to have the phone be still for the camera to register it's time to focus. if there's any movement and the video is currently blurry, it will stay blurry til the phone has been perfectly still for some seconds. it's very annoying. this was not the case on my gs4 or my lumia 920. both of those would focus regardless if the phone was moving or not.
yeah the video camera is pretty damn awful on this phone. hoping a dev makes a mod that can lock focus like the gs4 does.

Both photo camera and video camera are pretty bad. Pictures don't look nearly as bad though. Videos are just terrible. I'm hoping what the guy above me said.
Just tap where you want to focus. It tracks whatever object you tap.

The only time where I say slow focusing is under low light conditions. Besides that, I just tap where I want to focus and it locks on pretty quick.

because it's there for pics not videos.
also, the framer ate drops even below 30fps when in lower light. I don't mean darkness, i mean room lighting. it's pathetic.

Mine doest do more than 1-3 max to focus in 1080p 60fps...its the F320S k version.
Well, I bought this phone to be a decent pocket cam as well and bought into the 1080p 60fps hype. Disappointed that it is awful for indoor recording at a gym and even in good lighting shows blurriness. Wasn't the 60fps a big selling point for their camera? I'm hoping it's a software or kernel issue but at the moment, LG has gotten me twice with their specs marketing.

Just thinking that perhaps the combination of fast moving objects and relatively low light without being able to manually compensate is just unrealistic for most smartphones. I've never been much of a sports photographer so if others could help us out that would be great.
Higher the frame rate the greater need for available light this holds true for shutter speed as well. It's just physics at work. Even a high speed film camera needs more light to properly expose at high frame rates or shutter. You can compensate with higher iso but only to a point plus the grainier it will be. Remember light is your friend.

Yes I can think of a phone. Nokia lumia 1020 or 920 or 925. I have a 1020. Have tested these both side by side and the 1020 in low light video recording doesn't blur half as bad as my g2. That doesn't mean I don't like my g2, it just means the camera for video recording didn't live up to my expectations. For pictures it's nice. In 30 fps mode there is a tap to focus after you start the recording. But in 60 fps mode there is only auto focus and it pretty slow. Why they would not give the best quality mode no focus other than its slow auto focus makes no sense.

I know the camera issue has been beat to death already but I've been testing it for many days and would like to relay my results. A lot of people are saying that the auto focus is bad causing blurry pictures. This is false, the focus works great but the camera always chooses a shutter speed that's to low for the lighting causing blur on subjects in motion. The only way I can get the shutter speed over 1/20 is by taking a picture in bright light. Even in above average lighting conditions the shutter will go to 1/20 or below. There is no option for metering so I wonder if LG coded something wrong in the camera drivers. I have tried every camera program out there and they all take the exact same picture using the same to low shutter speed which tells me it's not the stock camera app. I don't have the skill to dive into the programming but that is where the problem seems to be. It's the same brand (Sony) camera sensor as the SGS4 so I know that it's not the sensors fault.
Any thoughts?

I had almost given up getting the camera to do what I wanted, when I discovered that the Intelligent Auto feature actually sometimes is ... intelligent. I took 4 photos of my toddler - obviously, not a subject willing to sit still. All photos on intelligent auto.
For two of the photos, the software shot with ISO 700 and 1/15th shutter, pretty much what Normal does every time. But - the other two were taken with ISO 1400-1/30 and ISO 1500-1/30. Naturally, the latter two were a lot sharper.
This is incredibly annoying since the Normal mode only lets you manually pick max ISO 800 and gives no shutter speed control. Until I found out about this intelligent auto thing, I forced -1, -1 1/3 stops underexposure to make the camera use a faster shutter (it typically used 1/59 for some reason). Now I guess I will take 5-6 pics every time and hope the camera is indeed intelligent part of the time.
- Is there no custom camera app capable of setting shutter speed manually, and use the ISO settings available to Intelligent Auto?
- Noone's had any word from LG on this?
I will be contacting LG support about this as well, but wanted to get the XDA word on the matter first...

Just replying to say I'm having the same issue. The fastest shutter speed I've seen is 1/15 in a well lit, easy to focus shot. The vast majority of my shots are blurry as a result.
I'm running Cyanogenmod at the moment.
I'm having pretty bad shutter speeds as well. It take 2 seconds to take a well-lit picture.
Guys , Try out the Moto X camera app. I may be wrong but i think its a bit faster .

I'm not talking about how long it takes to take the picture, that's delay. I'm talking shutter speed, how long the shutter stays open allowing light to hit the sensor.
I have not had any big problems with this, most of my shots are pretty tack sharp, and seem to have some decent shutterspeeds.. Only in very poor light I do get 1/15 shutterspeeds but at pretty average lights I get 1/30-1/120 sometimes faster, but mostly 1/40..
My shutterdelay is almist nothing too..
I found a modified version of the stock LG G2 camera by sefnap that works with CM 10.2 M1 and produces much better results: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2522889
Some of the features don't work but overall it's vastly better than the camera included with CM.

I just discovered something the other day when playing with my camera... Albeit in bright light. Check out these pics taken at 60mph from my car while I was driving (ie not the most steady hand).
What I did was set it on sports mode and then old down the camera button until I heard the beep, and then released to capture the image I wanted (ie the road signs). The one out of my car window was actually more focused than I could focus with my naked eye...
Can anyone provide some detail or a video of how fast the shutter speed is on the G4? I have a galaxy s6 now and love that I can capture my kids and dog running around without any blurring. The camera is impressive. Can the G4 compete in that regard? Any sample photos?

Seems real fast to me. My wife has the gs5 active and seems just as fast. Came from a nexus 5 that took 5-10 seconds to focus so it seems like lightning to me. Hope that helps

Laser focus helps keeping objects Sharp and crisp real quick. That alone might improve your moving target less blurred.

On good light condition, it's really fast focus.
I have them both and s6 camera feels more complete. Lg needs to do lots of work in the software field.

The Samsung camera software has been really good for a long time. I agree that the LG camera software is lacking in the polished department compared to Samsung. It's not too bad once you get used to the layout though.
Software aside, I found the S6 camera to be slightly faster than the G4. Both take incredible pictures for a phone, but the S6 snaps instantly with zero delay while there is a very short delay in the G4 in auto mode. It is very close though. You'll only notice the delay coming from an S6. Most G4 users probably don't notice.
Honestly, I actually preferred the S6 auto mode over the G4 auto mode. The S6 seemed to focus more accurately on quick shots. I'm hooked on the G4 manual mode with auto focus though. It more than makes up for the occasional errant focus. The S6 had them occasionally too, but less often.
As far as shutter speed goes, the G4 allows adjustment from 30 seconds down to 1/6000 of a second, so I think it can probably snap as fast as you'd ever need. I'll do some testing with it at the kids' sports games this week. It doesn't matter how quick the shutter speed is if it can't get the focus right when you need it...

Yea, but the G3 also had laser focus, and was pretty bad in regards to shutter speed. Was hoping for a big improvement. Nobody ever mentions shutter speed comparisons in phone reviews and it's annoying. It's a huge factor for me.

I've taken a number of nice pictures of my kids, and so far the camera seems really nice and capable. I don't have the S6, so I can't really speak to it in comparison (after Note 4 LP experience I had, I don't think I'll buy another Sammy). It takes them faster than any other device I've had. The picture quality is better than any phone I've owned (and if you look at my signature, I've owned some from virtually every manufacturer).
I haven't noticed any lag on taking a picture. I'll admit I've mainly used it to take pictures during the daytime.

I've had a couple pictures do that...it kinda felt like it was focusing on the background instead of what I was trying to take a picture of at first...I just tapped on screen where I wanted to focus seemed to fix.

Keep 2 meteres distance from the subject. set focus to infinity. Everything at 2m and beyond is in focus and anything closer than 2m will be soft. Make sure you keep that distance if they are moving. This means you're on your feet and moving with them.
The next bit is shutter speed. 1/125, slower will make things soft.
Resize to 2MP. If light is low you will get a noisy image but resizing will reduce the noise and it will be sharper.
Focus speed is never really an issue even with older devices as you can focus on something where they are and recompose by keeping your finger pressed on the shutter button. The problem has always been about getting a fast enough shutter speed and sensitivity, these are high iso images by definition anyway.
One way to reduce shutter speed is how they move across the frame. moving straight across requires the fastest shutter, at an angle means slower, moving in a backwards or forwards motion is the easiest. The fewer pixels that move the slower the shutter can be.

That's not what noise is, sounds like you're talking about photos being out of focus.
To the other posted, I've seen this as well. Even outdoors at ISO 100, there is a lot of noise in the photos.
