Will my phone work if I upgrade to Android5.0 but my carrier is still at 4.X? - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Basically, my carrier hasn't rolled out the updates yet. Is it OK if my OS is on a newer version?

No.

Not sure why the 'no' reply. Mind you that might refer to a locked phone. But if your phone isn't locked there's no reason your carrier would care or know.
e.g. I was on Telstra and was on kk b4 they released jb for their phones.

International Unlocked S3 I9300 Jelly Bean Updates

Hello everyone,
first time poster here, so please be gentle if I missed one of the rules here... I've searched through the threads here but am still somewhat confused.
I have an unlocked, unbranded international edition I9300 coming in the mail shortly. I intend to use it in the United States on the T-Mobile network. It turns out that T-Mobile has 3G coverage in the 1900 MHz band where I live.
Being a complete nub, I would prefer to not root the phone. However, I'm also wondering whether it is possible to install a version of official Jelly Bean on there once I get it through Kies? I've looked at the releases for Poland and Sweden, but they seem to all be branded versions for specific carriers. Would they work for me?
Thank you in advance!

Yes they will work on any i9300 model. However JB for your particular region should be out soon. So, you could just wait and update through KIES to avoid an hassle.
The Polish release is not branded. The Swedish is.
It just so happens I just came back from the states where I used my I9300 with my stock Polish DLIB rom on T-Mobile. Worked great.
Okay, thanks!
If the OS is branded, what differences does it have other than the splash screen at startup? Can these be installed without rooting?
Also - the North American variant is not the quad core i9300. Do you think they will still release an update through Kies to the U.S. for i9300?

The boot animation, some sounds probably, some carrier specific apps and/or games. In this case the telenor release is almost clean from what I read.
The apps you can disable without root, the boot animation you cannot.
If I were you I would go for the newest JB release and wouldn't worry about the branding or the CSC. If another newer release comes around you can just flash it over your existing rom using Odin without losing anything.
The NA versions will most likely receive JB as the Note2 which is about to hit retail in the US is already running it.
im waiting for the official uk update either that or a good working aosp rom

What would be the best JB to work on AT&T for best modem and APN settings. Right now I still have everything stock as I got it last Friday but getting terrible data speeds. This is in an a H+ Coverage area. I have the AT&T branded Red SIII and a international SIII and on the AT&T branded I get 3 to 4 Mbps download, while the international just breaks the 1Mbps download speed.

Who told you that there are carrier specific boot animation or sound in Swedish jelly bean? Apart from one Telenor app there is zero customization in this rom. And even this app can be easily disabled without rooting.

I bought an international while in Saudi Arabia on business. I works just fine on Att with polish xxdlib. I have no problems pulling down 3 to 4 mb in decent areas. Unfortunately that is rare for me because I'm staying with family out in the boondocks temporarily.

Loki

Im going to be purchasing the Verizon variant of the G2 in a week or so. I know as of right now, the phone is compatible with Loki. My questions are what specific software version is the G2 at? Does anyone know if a software update is coming? How can I check the software version of the phone in the store, without telling Verizon why I care about it?
Thanks!
phone comes running 4.2.2 and most likely will see an update at some time but there has not been official word of a set date that I know of

Thanks, is there a build number or anything I should be aware of?
Also, I've heard the white version will be coming out this week. It would likely be running the same build version?
not positive of the verizon build number. I know they did a very small update right after release so I am sure it will have that preinstalled.

I'm assuming that update is the one that's still able to be Loki'd. Crossing my fingers that nothing changes until I can get one.
as far as I have seen in the dev sections you can still use loki. just make sure to read up before you use loki and start flashing.

One last quick question
on my previous devices, once a newer software has been installed, its been impossible to go back to an older software version. If the G2 has a newer version that isnt compatible with Loki, does LG let you revert back to an older build? From what I've been reading on the TWRP thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2449670 it kinda sounds like it.
Sorry to ask, but Ive never had an LG before.
personally I don't know. Maybe someone else will chime in that knows for sure.
Build version doesn't matter.

Are you positive? When the S4 came out it was Loki'd but the ME7 build came out and killed that. Is Loki for the G2 different somehow?
I'm not meaning this to sound negative, just genuinely curious. LG development is so much different than Samsung or anything else I've been on.

As of right now, the newest software version for the VZW G2 is VS98011A. There are no issues rooting and romming that version.
To check what version it is, go to Settings -> About Phone -> Software Information. Its Software Version.

Thanks for providing me with the current software version.
I do know how to find the version number on the phone. I just am trying to figure out how I can check the version number before I commit to buying one. But if fr8cture is correct about the build number not mattering, this would all be moot.
Since the latest version is no problem, you should be good.

The reason I say that is there is yet to be a problem with the updates so far. Also you should be able to flash back to any version fo the software through the back to stock threads. They are LG tools.

It means Sony has not updated TMO with the info yet. That is understandable considering the international models don't even have a test version according to PTRCB. Once it's in testing (for TMO version: D6616) it will be listed.
Since you have the international version you will probably get it much earlier than us.
The Z1/Z3 are finally mentioned, status shows as "Manufacturer Development".
Now Z1s and Z3 in 2nd stage.

Same here. Sony and T-Mobile are probably sad that this phone is now rooted lol I'm surprised that they tried very hard to block people from rooting it but screw them!
Root alone won't let you update to a generic 5.0.2 ROM though. Still need to unlock the bootloader.

No you do not. You can have root on a Sony lollipop rom with a locked bootloader.
However, if you mean CM or AOSP etc, then you always need an unlocked bootloader for that

have you used lollipop at all? I have and I can now indeed wait. 5.1 just fixes a couple of issues it introduced, namely the notification up swipe and led.
I could not find one thing I prefer on lollipop over 4.4.4.
For those of us in the US, will we likely get the update around the same time as the India rollout? Since there is no carrier specific z3 compact, we shouldn't have to wait for the carriers to make their own?

It is not a great idea to upgrade via official OTA if you are not on stock recovery (which - I think - is not your case, since I assume you are rooted on latest fw).
To make sure to keep root privileges, just wait for somebody here at xda-developers to release a pre-rooted firmware based on the official OTA, or if you are able to, build it yourself.
We have just to wait a few more days, hopefully!

The main difference between the 5833 and 5803 is the lte bands. The 5833 is a TD-LTE model while the 5803 is a LTE A model. In India, airtel offers TD LTE, hence the TD LTE model for India.

Thats great then.
But if we do it, will we get the OTA update for the 5833 when they will be released?
Or probably we would need to flash them once they are out just as we are about to do now.
Not that much of a big deal in my opinion if we are doing that in the first place.
Sony is delaying it so much and if they are no issues as everyone is confirming, i think its the way to go.
Thanks for your inputs guys.
Off to flashing.

Was it remote access by USB cable then Factory unlocked? If so then you safe to flash any unlocked 935U. If your not with Sprint or any major US carrier best one to flash is the XAA.

If you go to a U Rom the downside you might lose your band 30 and the carrier aggression. AT&T doesn't have a Unlocked rom. So you would have to use XAA 935U which is a universal American unlocked ROM. AT&T uses band 30 pentrate inside buildings where band 17, 2, 4 and 5 can't get. But that's the only downside being unlocked with AT&T.

If it's the 935U you will be automatically have an update. You probably get that sometime later this month or next month. Since they only do quarterly updates. I think carriers in the US should start seeing Nougat next week. I'm on a Tmobile rom for that reason and to have other features that the unlocked rom doesn't have on it.

Stock is the way to go, faster updates and better modems. I have heard Sprint releasing 3 carrier aggression update yesterday for faster speeds. I don't think it's rolled out yet might be coming with Nougat this month.
