Wifi Hardcoded - Fire 7 not expecting OTG Ethernet to bypass for other tasks - Fire General

I have had a suspicion that the Fire 7 is hardcoded to recognise WiFi only for OTA updates and account registration etc. So I reset the device, set Amazon registration for later and did not join my local WiFi network. Plugged in my OTG Ethernet, opened a browser in Silk and went to BBC to confirm connectivity.
Since my device updated automatically the other day, even after a reset for this exercise the build is still FIRE OS 5.0.1 which is to be expected. I am unable to test if OTA updates will still kick in automatically when using OTG Ethernet?
Amazon account Registration is hardcoded to look for a WiFi connection only. Attempting to register with Ethernet does not work, the device simply prompts to join a WiFi network. [A Network Connection is required to complete this task. Please connect to a WiFi network].
System Updates button when pressed searches for an update - as there are currently no new updates again I am unable to test if this would automatically kick in via OTG Ethernet.
OK in the long run it is not feasible for the device to stay tethered via an ethernet cable, but it shows that the Fire 7 is expecting specific network tasks to automatically and manually to be carried by WiFi. Even though OTG Ethernet is working the device is simply not expecting it to be there!
As it currently stands I not going to join my device to my Amazon account again. Will leave it as standalone and install Google via the APKs that sd_Shadow so kindly pointed everyone in the right direction. Would be interesting to see if the next System Update is ignored if connected via OTG Ethernet.
Update 1: Aeroplane Mode enabled on the device and OTG Ethernet has full connectivity - was able to web browse. System Updates still searched and Amazon Account signup still prompted for WiFi connection. So it looks like Aeroplane Modes does not knock out the OTG Ethernet.
Update 2: Obviously with no Amazon sign in the device is restricted to the apps installed at factory default. So no ES Explorer donwload without Amazon signin to install the Google APKs. I know many of you have been using a ADB Shell to install your Google APKs. For this exercise of standalone device without Amazon Signin I simply connected my Fire7 via usb to my laptop, copied over the Google APKs to local storage (Fire 7 Device). Opened Amazon DOCS and browsed to Local Storage and installed them from there. Gave the tablet a reboot and all good.
Update 3: Google Play works fine on the Fire 7 via OTG Ethernet , in Aeroplane Mode and with no WiFi & Amazon account signin.
Update 4: Kindle App on Google Play shows as installed on the Fire 7 - opening the Kindle App prompts for Amazon Registration. I was hoping that this app would work without Amazon registration.
Update 5: I sent a dummy email support query from the device via [Phone & E-mail support] via OTG Ethernet in aeroplane mode to see if it would actually send and it did.
Update 6: I know sd_Shadow tried KingRoot already but the latest version came out the other day [4.5.2.928]. So I tried it but it failed to get root. But what was interesting is that when KingRoot went online to look for exploits as part of the rooting process, it would only do so if WiFi was enabled. It would not dial out when using OTG Ethernet. It was worth a go, just have to be patient for someone to find a root exploit out there.
Update 7: TowelRoot does not work either. tested it with the different codes - but it checked for exploits over the OTA ethernet.

Thank you Very much for this info
i wonder if someone could decode, the update signal Amazon sends to the fire.
because if so we may be able to use Apache (or something like it) to install CM (CyanogenMod)
VIA OTG Ethernet
just the product of my mental activity (AKA: a brain **** storm)
.
anyway for those who do not know what a OTG Ethernet is here is a video on it
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BkJBV82sj34
you can get one at Amazon here
http://www.amazon.com/Plugable-Ethernet-Compatible-Smartphones-AX88772A/dp/B00RM3KXAU
Peace
Ricci

Your'e welcome. I posted this into the Tips & Tricks thread the other day.
It seems the same OTA Update file [otacerts.zip] that is used on other Fire & Kindle models is being used as the config for the Fire 7 for the OTA Update - it can be found in /etc/security/otacerts.zip
As soon as root is available we will be able to deal with this file and stop any future OTA updates.

You could use a local DNS server to the same effect as using an OTG Ethernet adapter, either creating a hotspot on your computer or pointing your router's DNS address at your local DNS server.
Even so, the update would still require Amazon's signature, so unfortunately this probably would not work. It's the same reason we can't use fastboot or adb in recovery mode to flash a custom ROM.

[Q] Wireless Tether Help

How do I get Wireless Tether to work on my Fascinate. I am new and I have no clue what to do. Please Help.
Thanks
Are you rooted?
If you need to root, there are lots of easy one click guides you could go find. My half baked manual root video uses a guide from Cyanogen's forum:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=852779 (bottom)
If you are already rooted, I recommend barnacle from market.
You may need to check "skip WPA supplicant" in settings.
If you specifically meant "android wifi tether", their home page is here:
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
If you are undecided about which tether you want, check out the barnacle developer's page, he had organized some good info about your options:
http://szym.net/barnacle/
Swyped w/ XDA App. System: http://tinyurl.com/26tmcr9
Also, if you still can't connect and can't see the AdHoc network from your computer, make sure your WiFi driver is updated. My Intel wireless card was v12.x something and I updated to v13.4. I went from not being able to pickup/see the AdHoc network to being able to detect it immediately and connect immediately. (posting this message through it right now.)
I wish I had been able to update my computer's wireless network driver yesterday when I tried. It's hard to reliably download a 35MB file via a 1-2 bar signal. I tried several times.
Anyway, I usually try by going to the Network Card manufacturer's site first and see if I can get an updated driver there. (In my case, directly to Intel). If you have a very obscure wireless network card, then you may have to go to the computer manufacturer's website instead to get updated drivers. Hope this helps someone save some time.

FoxFi WiFi direct with PDANet works for Turbo 2

Apologies if this is already known, but I couldn't find anything on it when searching.
Many years ago I bought the paid version of FoxFi when I had my Razr before root options were available. On a whim, I installed it to see if the USB tethering would work with PdaNet. Not only did I find that USB tethering works, but WiFi direct also works under the PdaNet options. I know this isn't a totally free option (I think the free version of FoxFi either limits total data and/or turns off intermittently), but it does work very well. You can also download PdaNet for your computer from your phone and transfer it via USB cable - so you can still make this work if you have no other internet connection than your phone. Hope this helps.

I also have the paid version and have been trying to get it to work with my Firestick with no luck... I looked for a tutorial on how to set it up but couldn't find one. I tried WPS and inputting the password manually. What did your successfully connect to?

PdaNet seems to have to be installed on the client device. In my case a computer. PDANet can be downloaded from PDANet.co (not .com). To my knowledge PdaNet only works on Mac, Windows, and Android - so a TV (if that's what you're using) may not work. I am currently posting this from my computer using PdaNet + FoxFi as it's the only internet connection I have available during the week.
I didn't have any luck with the WPS - not sure where the issue is/was, but entering the password in manually has been very trouble free. I can watch Netflix and Youtube without issue, but Twitch seems to have some issues. I haven't tried gaming yet (though the connection was good enough to get my games updated) - but hope to soon.

Cool, yes, I got it working on a windows computer, but wasn't able to get it to work on the Firestick streaming device. Not a TV.
Can you use Wi-Fi Direct to your PC and then use the WiFi share function to your firestick?
If you have Windows 10 on your PC you can usb tether (or wifi direct) the computer to your phones internet, then use the windows 10 mobile hotspot option to broadcast the signal to your other devices. I have my firestick hooked up with this setup, and my Xbox 1 too.
---------- Post added at 01:34 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:27 AM ----------
If you don't have Windows 10 you can tether your PC, then go to network and sharing center, click on change adapter settings, then right click the tethered connection with internet, hit properties, then the sharing tab, click the box on that says "allow other network users blah blah blah", then select the other connection that you wish to have internet. Before I started using Windows 10 this is how I would hook up my Xbox 1 through the Ethernet connection via PDANET+ usb tether. Works perfectly.
So I noticed it doesn't work on the Sticks. But it does work on the Pendant and Cube. The latter devices show a VPN prompt on the first time. I think that may have something to do with it.

Fire stick2 - first run / avoiding OTAs/ Youtube replacement:

I made some notes for my own use, and am posting them here since could help others too.
The goal is to preserve the earliest FireOS version that you get, and not let it get updated by Amazon on a whim.
I am starting with a Black Friday bought Fire stick, FireOS 5.2.4.2 (574263220)
The procedure needs to be done rather quickly (10-15 min), without leaving Fire stick idling - otherwise it may update on its own.
Unpack FireTV stick 2, plug it in into a low power USB adapter, usually a TV USB port, it should complain, that is great, as another barrier for skipping an immediate update
Set up a dedicated slow router, limit upload/download speed to 50 kbps (this is the trickiest part, I have a dedicated Tomato router which I use to control traffic to the Fire stick)
Connect Fire stick to this slow router
Once Fire stick finds Internet, it'll immediately have "Checking for updates" on the screen, this is where the slow router should kick in, and do the trick forcing the update to give up
Wait a bit for updates, should eventually fail, press "back" button on the Remote if needed
Sign in to Amazon account when prompted
In "Settings/Device/Developers Options", turn on ADB debugging to ON, Unknown sources to ON
Connect to ADB via network, disable OTA updates:
Code:
adb connect 192.168.1.XXX (your Fire stick IP address here)
adb.exe uninstall -k --user 0 com.amazon.device.software.ota
adb.exe uninstall -k --user 0 com.amazon.device.software.ota.override
Navigate to the Settings option on Fire and reboot
Verify that updates are disabled (Settings/Device/About/Check for System Update - click, should get "System Update Error")
Now Fire stick is safe to play with, it won't do an OTA
More regular customizations
Connect to your normal fast router, no longer need precautions
Install Morelocale2 (from here):
Code:
adb install MoreLocale2-v2.3.1.apk
Give Morelocale2 permissions :
Code:
adb shell pm grant jp.co.c_lis.ccl.morelocale android.permission.CHANGE_CONFIGURATION
Run Morelocal2 on Fire stick, choose your language, if cannot find, go here(Settings/Applications/Manage Installed Applications/More Locale2/Launch Application)
Install SmartYouTubeTV_Orig_v6.12.02_r.apk :
Code:
adb install SmartYouTubeTV_Orig_v6.12.02_r.apk
(from https://smartyoutubetv.github.io/en/)
Install Crosswalk library to support 1080p and above in SmartYouTubeTV for this link
Code:
adb install "Crosswalk Project Runtime_v23.53.589.4_apkpure.com.apk"
Launch SmartYouTubeTV (Settings/Applications/Manage Installed Applications/SmartYouTubeTV/Launch Application)
Connect SmartYouTubeTV to your google account via ""youtube.com/activate" using the provided code
Continue customizing as you are pleased, by following, for example, this guide by @Bropinski
Great post! :good:
One question, once the Fire Stick starts checking for updates, would powering off the router that it's connected to allow you to skip the "Checking for updates" part?

The problem is that after giving up on updates it'll ask to go to Amazon registration, so at that point you'll probably need to get your connection back.
Nice guide. I'd be surprised if the fire stick2 ever gets root. Been out for a while and I don't think any developers are working on it. My hope is that it gets upgraded to android M or N and there are easy flaws exploited to get root (i'm assuming you are blocking updates to get root someday). Been on blocked updates for about a year and it seems like I'm just missing out of bug fixes! I don't think Amazon would block smart youtube tv, they are already giving alternate ways to get on youtube that bypasses googles block.

My fire tv stick will be here tomorrow so I'm preparing for it, what I've done so far is put this in my hotspot's /etc/hosts file:
Code:
127.0.0.1 amzdigital-a.akamaihd.net
127.0.0.1 amzdigitaldownloads.edgesuite.net
127.0.0.1 softwareupdates.amazon.com
127.0.0.1 updates.amazon.com
I plan to hook it to low power USB on first boot of course and sign into my account. Does anyone know of any new host amazon checks for updates because I have only found these referenced from over 6 months ago, and amazon could have easily changed the behavior in the firmware being shipped. Also I'm aware this method is not going to work anytime the stick is connected to a different wireless lan, but that should not happen by mistake in my case.
PS I've avoided the firetv stick due to proprietary restrictions as with any similar device sold by a big name company, but my woman decided she wanted one for the price after we was shipped an android tv box without the original remote control and no way to power it on as it lacked a physical button, the fire stick was what we went with along with an OTG cable with 3 usb ports. Anyway I'm a semi-retired developer for other devices, so I look forward to contributing anything I possibly can to the community here. Thanks guys!

I actually have a number of these now, they work real good, especially with sideloaded apps. To take this to the next level, root would be good. I recently tried with Kingoroot running on a PC, but it failed.
Btw, try to avoid WiFi connection as in this post here (Part I). That's a different Fire device, but who knows, it might be possible to bypass WiFi connection and updates without any router workarounds.
hello, i can't bypass the first update .. unable to update your fire stick tv. i have try slow internet connection, dns domain blocking, uk and us vpn to access the internet. nothin work. My Fire Stick TV with alexa voice command is just a brick. Please guys, can you help me?
update - i have call amazon and they told me the device was reported as stolen !! this is way i can't update the device. I have buy this stick from internet and was brand new and sealed.

Ok! I have buy a new sealed Fire TV stick 2 that was reported lost/stolen! No way to bypass the update screen after connecting to internet, the device is blocked by amazon. I find a way to go to settings and check ADB Debuging and Unknown Application.
I have installed Amazon remote on my smartphone, after connecting to internet and display the error can't update i have pair my phone with the stick and press SETTINGS on my application.
After i have connected with adb from my pc

Unfortunately i can't seem to do this. i've tired multiple ways to skip the update at first setup from completely blocking amazon updates servers on the router to limiting the internet speed. no matter what i keep getting stuck at the page that says "unable to update your fire stick" and the remote app on both my phones don't detect the fire stick to connect to it. i'm stucked
what version tv stick 1 or 2?? try to search on application exactly after you connect to your network the stick must be on the same network. Try to disconnect all others devices from that network, to keep only the stick and the phone... it will find the stick and it will prompt the pair code. After that press multiple times on settings on app.
sorry for me English

it's the fire stick 2nd gen. just bought it today. both the stick and the phone are on the same wifi.
just to verify. after the update fails and the fire stick is at the page that says "unable to update your fire TV stick" all you do is open the amazon remote app on your phone and it shows up?
---------- Post added at 09:30 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:13 PM ----------
so update. i got the remote app to work on my phone and connect to the fire stick. it seems the issue was my wireless router was blocking it. i swapped out the router with a older one and it worked. i was able to bypass the setup screen and go to settings. now unfortunately it seems that newer fire sticks like mine come pre-shipped with version OS 5.2.6.1 which i can't disable ota debload on.
Might as well just let it update and get it over with since i can't do anything on this version of the os
if you don't want updates you can report you fire tv stick 2 as lost or stolen. If you do this you can't use amazon services anymore and you should install another launcher.

that wouldn't really help in my case as the stick already came with a updated os version that can't uninstall the built in apps. anyway i already set it up and let it update from 5.2.6.1 to 5.2.6.2.
the stick already came from amazon with os 5.2.6.1. from what i understand only os 5.2.6.0 and below you can use adb on to uninstall amazon apps which was what i mainly wanted to do since i don't use any amazon services. i just wanted a stick for netflix, youtube and hulu that i already pay for
I have followed the instructions to bypass the failed update screen on 2 previous firesticks that had been reported lost/stolen and worked perfect. Now on the third one when i connect the remote app the settings button is not there so im stuck again. Does anyone have an idea why the settings button in the left top of remote app would not be there on just this one stick?

Hi Adrian,
Normally you can see ADB on/off option in setting/devices, however, once your fire stick is blocked there's would be no this ADB option in the setting anymore. Plus there will be no Application in setting as well. Any idea to jailbreak it?

So on your mobile remote does it have the settings gear in the top left corner. I recently bought 17 locked sticks and 16 of 17 had the gear only 1 didnt have the settings gear.

New fire tv help with apps2fire

I recently bought a new fire tv presume it's a gen3 without looking it's running 6.2.1.2 I'm trying to get the apps2fire to side load ott player and swiftstreamz, the apps are irrelevant really as I cannot get the app to connect properly to the ftv, I first attempted while watching a film in terrarium where the app on my phone told me it could not do this as I'm running a movie player (I'd forgotten this occured on the firestick too) I had to close the app to get control of the remote back.
Now after this I get constant errors in the app on my phone saying cannot connect to ftv usually mentioning a Java error, apps2fire sometimes finds my ftv and recognizes it as so and sometimes it just finds the MAC address and ip under devices ta either way it does not connect and fails to side load the app.
Oddly also in my router there appears to be 3 different android Mac addresses with different ip's (one of which is only seen by apps2fire) but all 3 can only relate to my ftv, I have restarted the ftv, phone, and router several times I've made sure they are both in the same network 2.4ghz (ftv will not see the 5ghz and I also do not know why).
Is there a way to backup my current setup on the ftv for a factory reset? I really don't want to have to reinstall everything after a factory reset if I don't have to?
All help and advice really appreciated thanks..
Semi solved it by using Es file explorer, and changing the channel in my router for 5ghz ..

Voice commands via google assistant no longer working after switching out router

I replaced my old Tp-link archer c59 with an orbi mesh system. I use to be able to say commands to my google home like ''launch netflix on shield'' and it would work. After switching out the router, I just get ''I dont know how to do that yet''. I still see the shield in the google home app. Im still able to control it through the google home app with the ''play music'' function so I know its still linked. Casting works fine. If I set the shield as my default speaker, my hub will play music directly to the shield. Whats confusing is that its defiantly linked up.
Things I tried already are clearing data on google play services and chromecast built in on the shield. Clearing data on the google home app on my phone.
Side note: The shield is also no longer discoverable on a windows PC. I use to be able to access it under ''network''. I tried disabling and enabling sharing on the shield already.
Update. I was finally able to fix this issue after a month. I turned offer IPv6 on the shield, a now GA is able to launch apps with voice command. My PC is also able to see the shield under network. Ive always had IPv6 enabled before switching to the Orbi system and never had a problem. Not sure why a newer router would screw everything up.
However, there are couple of new problems Ive encountered. Casting from my PC lasts for a second and the picture freezes while the sound continues. Second, I can no longer connect to the shield with my phone or tablet with file manager apps. I can still connect to it with my PC just fine.
