Z5 Compact overheating issues - could this be a big problem already? - Xperia Z5 Compact General

Just noted this article so take it with a grain of salt I suppose:
http://www.phonearena.com/news/Snap...t-owners-sweat-with-overheating-issue_id74367
From what I can tell it's just one person so far reporting those types of issues but, you do have to wonder about it considering the 810 does have that reputation for overheating and Sony choosing it for their Z5 Compact if the combination will be eventually seen as a bad one.
I had a lot of interest in this smartphone, serious interest, now I'm having to step back and rethink that possible purchase until more info comes along.
Anyone else seen such reports anywhere else?

Absolutely no issue.

My CPU-temp never exceeded 50-55°C so far even when gaming.
It's just right Sony went with the 810, especially the 3D performance is way above the 808.

One variable that everybody keeps forgetting about is the build and the materials of the device. The Z5c is glass on the back which conducts even the smallest amount of heat like its a big deal (happened on my Nexus 4).
Right now, I'm hoping that dbrand or somebody will make skins for this device and then I'll be more happier.

At casual usage my Z5C doesn't produce heat at all. When playing titles like real racing 3 it gets as warm as the Z3C.. No worries.

Mine is fine. No overheating here.
Sent from my E5823 using Tapatalk

Mine gets no hotter than my Z3c. When I got it on Friday, I logged into Spotify and downloaded tracks solidly for about 2hrs - got a bit warm but no overheating.

The user who made the touch issue video on Youtube stated in comments that it really doesn't have any overheating issues. I'm not even sure he knows that his video is being used at Phonearena.

My tests on 4K recording - average CPU temperature when recording is about 60°C. When over 65, information about high temperature displays - at about 8 minutes of recording. When CPU got to 69-70 the recording stopped (9:20) and camera shut down. After that CPU temperature dropped down to 53 and is slowly going down. But the phone itself is still very hot.
Edit: tested using com.yanyan.cputemp

Yeah, the guys with the touch screen problems are sometimes experiencing them after rebooting the phone - I doubt they are due to overheating.

The screen goes sometimes bad when charging, or using 4k film. I've had my phone about 2 days and so far has had restart it 5-6 times.

DevCheck Pro.
This is an App one can trust, as the developer himself has got a SD 810 device.
No matter what i'm doing with the phone, it always seems either cool or a bit warm.
Depends on the SOC-binning and other facts, i may dive into /sys to find out some stuff.
My previous Xperia Z was about 15-20°C hotter while gaming then my Z5C.

I´m using it now on my tablet z4

Yea Phone Arena telling lies because this aint true and thats why they removed the article!!!!!

Guys, on my spare iPhone I am experiencing similar issue with no touch response on screen from time to time which is only resolved by locking screen and unlock it. So we are not alone and we have nothing to complain.

Got mine from clove too. Try doing some timelapse and AR stuff with the camera and you will see just how toasty it gets and how fast. It is most definitely a problem. Especially when you go into these modes and it warns you that its going to get hot and may shut down!

It does slow down when rendering the AR but nothing slower than the Z3C i previously owned. And that heat messeges is a standard for Sony, were present on Z2,Z3 seriers and now Z5 as a notification which you can ignore.
There is no overheating of this device, there is only slight warmth in back area which is perfectly normal.

Heating issue!

Hey,
Is anyone experiencing heating issues with their handset? I've just been reading on GSM that a lot of people are complaining.
Yes, its an issue.

I don't have a Z3+ (I have a Z3C), but I've read this:
Japanese Xperia Z4 owners complain of heat issues
followed by this:
Sony responds to Xperia Z3+ heating issues
Sony statement on Xperia Z3+ heating concerns
“The Xperia Z3+ is a high-performance 64-bit octa-core device with advanced camera technology, in some cases, additional heat can cause functions to stop. Enabling applications can also be felt by the user through the glass on the back. This is normal for the unit and should cause no concern.”
We need a reputable source to do an actual review of the production device.

Who is more reputable than Sony THEMSELVES, the ACTUAL manufacturers of the phone???
This is a big worry, was thinking of buying the z3+ but now might get the z3 idk. I was really excited for the z3+ but if the overheating is such an issue to the point where Japanese markets are advising their consumers to "use your tablet or pc instead of your phone if you can". I mean i shouldn't have to worry about these kind of stuff esp for a PREMIUM phone. Very disappointed
If we are reading the same quote from Sony, they are not stating there is an overheat issue. Heat generation is normal. I have this problem on my z2 when recording in 4k.
Look at this,
Already test z3+ for long time just normal heat
Edit: lol picture didnt uploaded

Xerxess, Please, try to run some game, Nfs, or Real racing 3, for example, and to play it for a 15-20 mins, and then look at the temp, if device won't turn off earlier of course And also, could you, please, try to use camera and video recording , and then report about a device heating to us, please

AR Mask app can shut down to prevent heating issues in under a minute. It was fine on prototype firmware, so something has been changed for the worse there..

My Z2 has a heating problem, but its not at high level. Shoul I do troubleshoot it ?
@xerxess, kindly let us know what firmware version your Z3+ is on.
I'm curious to find out if any of you reporting heating issues are running any apps to undercloak the CPU. Even my AT&T Galaxy S5 runs very hot if I dont use anything to undercloak or even use Power Saver at leat. I can run my phone with two cores on and two cores off undercloaked at 1.2 Ghz. What I'm saying here is try to run the phone with 4 coes online and 4 off, and undercloak all 4 cores at say 1.5 Ghz. I bet the heating issues would decrease if not go away all together. Obviously why buy a V8 if u are going to run it like a 4 cilynder right??? But we are talking about an issue here, that obviously e en the manufactures are aware of. Otherwise the camera app or other apps would not close when the temp gets up there. All they are doing at that point is turning off cores and undercloaking the ones that are one to prevent any more heat build up. And that allows the system in ur phone to dissipate the heat more efficiently. Any thoughts?
I don't have any overheating issues with my z3+. I havent played a game on it but I used it for a navigation while plugged in, where i would expect to heat up a lot. I mean it heats up a bit but what xperia z doesnt?
I am suspecting all the fuss may be coming from guerrilla marketing ploys from one of Sony's competitors. The Z4/Z3+ really is the best flagship phone in terms of design. SD810 has been in the market (via M9 and G4) and this issue coverage is only overblown with Sony's new phone.
So I just tried to play real racing 3 for 20 minutes while on charger and yes, the phone is hot but my old Z1 was the same way. It didnt crash or anything due to overheating.
btw. you can always put it into water to cool it down
I own the xperia z4 tablet wifi for some days now. Have tested it extensively over the weekend and can truly state that it has NO heating issue. Just played real racing 3 for about half an hour and the tablet gets moderately warm. NO crashes.
And no, i do not work for Sony.

All about performance (question)

Hi, I'm looking at this phone to potentially buy as the phone is the perfect size for me and I really like the look.I owned the z3c and loved it until I dropped it and blew the screen out. After going through an S6 and G4, I sold sold them for various issues with software and the size was still a bit large for my liking. I currently have an iPhone 6S and was surprised how fast it is and the size is really good. BUT, I prefer Android and have a warm spot for the compact line. My concern though as others I'm sure have as well is all of this talk about Sony not properly optimizing the handset and how it lags and stutters while scrolling. Seems unacceptable to release this kind of unfinished product. Seen and read videos and articles about people complaining the same things..so this is no fluke correct? I am very hesitant to buy this phone and would like to know from users their experience with software issues. I want this to be a discussion to help potential buyers like me, and I'm sure there are many concerned as I am about performance based issues before we buy. Thanks in advance!

Yeah, some users posted about faster governor scaling in this firmware. So cpu frequencys are raised more aggressively now.
My device runs a lot smoother with this update. This was the only point that I was unhappy with before the update. It is not as snappy as some other devices I had in my hand but definitely good now. Still some micro stuttering at some occasions but I am very confident that there will be much more improvement soon, especially with Android M update.
Nexus is using the same SoC on their devices, shipped with Android 6 so Sony will benefit from further updates, regarding hardware optimization.

Well, the "stutters" could be removed quite easily.
What Sony did is they decreased the sampling interval of the governor,
this leads to increased responsiveness, however it does not fight the root cause.
The device is not able to operate smoothly at the given freq threshold (960 000 kHz), and decreasing sampling time will not help to resolve this.
What Sony should've done instead is simply leaving the sampling interval and increase the freq thresholds.
I'll soon get my device rooted again and prove that with this change battery-life will not be sacraficed, but the amount of micro-stutters will be noticably reduced.
The SOC has so much potential and power-reserves, this device could perform way better with proper less-conservative tuning.
Got the phone on release and was very disappointed with all the lag and stutters. But since the latest update, everything is smooth sailing.

I noticed a huge increase in speed when waking the camera after the update. Phone feels much snappier overall as well. Glad to see Sony doing some better optimizations.
Lag isn't gone for me, but it's substantially better. I think I'm noticing the 2gb of ram too. When streaming music and browsing photos, when I scroll through 20-25 photos the music app crashes. I have repeated this 100% of the time. Could it be running out of ram as I scroll through these high-res photos? Frustrating.

I honestly don't know, but i am in contact with Sony's community manager and can forward most stuff this way.
However i'll wait first till marshmallow drops as i don't think Sony puts in much effort in 5.1 either way (which makes sense).

For me it's still very slow and laggy even after the latest update, it got a little better but my Z1C performed way better. I really hope marshmallow will improve this. Sometimes I'm about the break the phone in two because it's so slow!

I have no idea what that other guy is talking about. The Z5 doesn't get nearly that hot. Maybe he has some sort of defective device or something. As a matter of fact, the only time the device gets warm at all is when playing some graphically intensive games, and then, it never gets as hot as the iPhone 6s I owned for a bit.

What part of what I said could be construed as lying? The device simply does NOT get so hot that it could, with a few more degrees, potentially burn your fingers. That's insanity. I don't care what app you're using. If your device does get that hot, then there's something wrong with it. I've had mine for over a month now, and it certainly does not do get that hot. And I find it highly unlikely that Sony would knowingly release a product that could almost burn someone's fingers.

Lol this is why I don't believe in what most people on here say as the negative. Its them trying to nit pick on tge device. In actual reality all phones get warm or hotter than others when using it. It's an electronic device that has internal components and boards inside so yeah its gonna get warm/hot. Phones are made from different materials from plastic,to glass,to metal etc. And the heat attracts differently in each.so to the op,if your asking if the phone gets warm/hot.. Yes it does and so does every other phone out there. If your asking if it gets hot to where it burns?? I highly doubt that.

I'm relatively new to this forum, so I don't know if it's changed in any dramatic way recently, but it seems to me that no one has any objection to you mentioning issues with the device. I have a few negative things to say about the device myself (I'm very disappointed with the volume of the speakers, for instance).
Don't be surprised, though, when you get some backlash for saying incredible things like "a few degrees more and the phone will burn your hands". That's just plain exaggerated nonsense. And in the case it isn't nonsense, then it must be the fact that you have a device that is out of the norm, otherwise people would be reporting this near hand-burning issue left and right.
I agree with the previous poster...almost all modern handheld devices get warm with CPU-intensive applications, and in my experience, this device has not gotten any hotter than other recent flagship devices like the iPhone 6S. It's gotten warm on occasion, but certainly not anywhere's near hand-burning temps.
I don't know if you are comfy with 40 degrees. Im not. And for me that is hot. I don't care if S6 is worst I don't have that phone. I'm talking about Z5. Yep, must be the 810 because the media and everyone else has instilled in us that it's just a terrible processor that will melt phones. I have had 2 phones with it, and while it does get warm, it never gets hot or overheats. Not to mention it is one fast chip. I can say for certain that my M8 got way warmer than my G Flex 2, and probably the Z5 too.

Still worth buying?

Good day!
I've been looking for a new device to buy as a replacement for my Z1 compact. I have considered the Z5 and this phone.
I liked the Z5 at first. It has arguably better camera and has dual heat pipes. I think after that they're almost the same. But Z5 is still ~$120 more expensive than the Z3+ here in our country. So I'm picking between the two.
I have been reading a lot, and it is always conflicting. Some say overheating issue in Z3+ is gone, some not. I've been trying to fully desire the Z3+, but I'm just scared my money will go to waste if I have a device I can barely use.
There are already similar threads but those were a year ago. So my question is, is this still worth buying? Can I have some assurance that this phone will not heat up and become useless? I want a phone that can stay with me for at least 2 years. Thank you in advance for the help.
What is your average usage scenario, meaning for what will you use your phone? Playing lots of games, shooting 4K videos?

Hi! During weekdays, I probably spend an hour or 2 of music while on commute. 3-4 hours of usage (browsing, reading, youtube) when I got home. On weekends, I spend more time on my phone. Probably double of what I do on the weekdays.
About games, I play occasionally, when I got bored or have nothing else to do. Not really heavy games.
And lastly about the camera. I take a lot of photos when I go out, buildings and stuff. Videos: rarely, and I'll use 1080p/720p if I do want to record. I do not see the benefit of 4K recording yet!

In that case, I can recommend Z3+ wholeheartedly, you won't experience overheating, and phone will serve you perfectly. Expect 4-5h off SOT per day depending on usage, mobile data usage, brightness etc...

Thanks! Did your phone come with a good set of earphones, or should I buy a better one?

Heh, I bought sbh54 afterwards, and I believe I'll eventually keep them instead of nc31...if you're closer, I would give them to you at bargain price...

I'm from the other side of the world though, haha. SBH... oh bluetooth. You didn't experience any drops? Does it consume too much battery?

I am still testing, in my usage pattern it will last 2-3 days which is totally ok. Once so far I had connection issues, will see if it's going to repeat, but, so far so good...
What I like with them is notification party, ease of use, even this possibility to answer using the main unit only...

I drive 300 miles (4 1/2 hours) on Mondays and Thursdays for business. I stream music the whole way (Pandora) connected via bluetooth to my car with the screen off. I typically reach my destination having used 15 - 20% of the battery life. I find that acceptable.

In my country, price difference between the two is 20eur in favor of Z3. I wouldn't say Z3+ is way better, it is better but Z3's biggest advantage is battery. If you can live with 4h SOT vs. 6h, then go for Z3+. Heating issues are past, I am not playing games to comment that part, but for experimenting I took once long 4K video, and it recorded 10 minutes with small temperature raise, when I stopped forget recording. And that temperature increase was not higher than charging schedule or some longer browsing etc...

I don't know what are prices for each of these...For instance, I would even go to Z5 if it isn't pricier more than 80 euro vs. Z3+

It seems the heating issue has not been resolved

This is really bad from Sony. Marketing a phone for having the best camera yet people cannot use for more than a few minutes before it crashes.

I only got a message after stopping the recording after 40 minutes, and even then it wasn't a shutdown message.

Hardly a fair comparison against a s7, he also clearly states that he's played games on the xperia x for over a hour before hand this is more like Samsung promotion than the xperia x review
No heating issues whatsoever here... neither with gaming nor camera usage
Ok I have now bought the phone. Safe to say that the above Video is BS.
Please ignore this thread or close.
Thanks
Told ya lol

heats even after Nougat
Hey guys!
I bought Xperia X three days ago through flipkart at very good discount. Updated it to Nougat immediately. May 2017 patch is also installed now.
The problem is ... clicking few random 23 MP or 20 MP pictures would heat the phone up (heat not warm!!!) Like i cannot take it near to my ear to take the call. Had to hold it a bit away from my ear. This was in the morning at around 11 am where the temperature at my place was around 38 to 43 deg celsius.
Then to test when i was in office (where there is AC), i started recording video (full hd at 30 fps). After around 2 to 3 minutes, the phone started heating up. The heat was not like it was in the morning but was 15% lesser.
I installed an app now on my phone and it shows 40 degree celsius. Nothing is running in the background, just the app and mobile data enabled (4g and volte).
So is there any solution for this heating problem or is it a known thing?
Please help me coz i have 7 more days to return the phone but i am half hearted to lose it.
Dont even know which phone to chose to other than iphone which never saw heating issue in the circumstances mentioned above. iphones are a bit pricey..cant go for it
