Unlocking Motorola Android boot loaders - Verizon Motorola Droid Turbo General

I found this site where a guy gives a procedure on how to unlock the boot loader on any Motorola Android phone. Check out the link and lets see what you think. If this has already been posted please excuse my re-post.

Sadly, someone correct me if I'm wrong but, I believe this is for a Motorola bought phone, not a Verizon bought phone made by Motorola.

While this generally works for moto phones, verizon phones and a few others are not eligible for it. If you try, the moto site will tell you this.

Only hope is that someone finds and exploit similar to the G3 and is able to force TWRP onto the phone without unlocking.
My G3 still technically has a locked bootloader but they managed to push TWRP to it anyway.
Unfortunately with the Turbo being Verizon exclusive and such a small following, I doubt we will ever see the day especially with the "Turbo 2" coming out. Best bet for now, is Motofail ($20) to push custom roms.

Motofail is free and does not support the Turbo. You're thinking of moforoot.

From Motorola Forums - GB and Unlocked Bootloader Post

When is the next firmware update to gingerbread 2.3. Let's try to stay on topic, and have fun.
1. It's kind of a loaded question. "about to start" and "a while" mean different things to different people. No lie, it's difficult to manage everyone's expectations. I don't want to set the wrong expectations. Mis-interpretation just leads to frustration and further pessimism. I don't want to promise something that I don't have the control over delivery. I wouldn't expect any soak sign-up, at minimum, for another week. Soon as we get closer to soak I'll invite everyone.
2. As mentioned before we are working on a Unlockable Bootloader solution for release later this year where our carrier partners will allow it. This isn't specific to any product or carrier. Further details will be released as they are known.

Interesting that the unlocked bootloader seems to be separated from the GB update in the second post. Makes it look like the unlocked bootloader will not be coming till much later.

And even then, only when the carriers allow it. Will AT&T ever allow something like that? I say hell no.

Except that all AT&T phones can already be unlocked with pudding, so it doesn't matter if they allow it or not.

AT&T sells android phones that already have unlocked bootloaders and I do not see them having a reason to deny the update.
With that said pudding will give you unlocked bootloader, once applied, FOREVER! so it will not matter at this point if they allow it or not

They do? Which ones? Last I checked, all sorts of phones have locked bootloaders. It's just that Moto's the only one who actually does more than simply lock it.
If the soak test sign ups started in a week, you could look at soak testing starting a week later, and if past updates are anything to go by, an update another week later if all went well. That puts the GB update at in the last week of July.
On the locked bootloader, a lot of people said they will not unlock until they get the official update enabling this, so although many of us are already locked, many people are probably getting screwed. Might push them to just unlock now.

In a sense, yes. A question, and then my thoughts.
While the AT&T bootloader can be unlocked now, is it possible (not likely, just possible) from a technical standpoint, that Moto could release a GB update that would prevent pudding from working? Say GB is release next week. A month from now a guy buys an Atrix, pulls it out the box with GB. Could that GB update prevent him from unlocking the bootloader? I think it's possible this could happen.
Further, my thoughts are that there is concern for future Moto devices on AT&T. We have a reasonable solution now, for this phone. What about future Moto devices? I don't think AT&T would allow such an unlock.

Which phones on AT&T come with an unlocked bootloader? Or do you just mean that they sell phones that have bootloaders that can be unlocked? Big difference, IMO. HTC doesn't care if you unlock their bootloader. Moto says you need carrier permission. What makes you think AT&T would ever grant such permission?
As for the rest, see my questions in my previous post. I'm not sure on the technical aspects of it, but I can see this making a difference in future devices, and possibly future Atrixes that are sold...
To hell with Motorola is all I can say. How can you start a project with no planned end dates. this is utter BS.

Inspire, Captivate, Infuse. Maybe a few more. These all allow for custom ROMs and kernels, and it's only Motorola trying to lock us down. HTC doesn't care, and the Inspire has tons of ROMs and kernels. Same with the Cappy. So why is it only Motorola if it's the carrier who wants it locked?

My theory on this is that carriers were willing to subsidize manufacturers' bootloader lockdowns that ensured the carrier bloatware would remain installed and stuff like tethering could be mitigated. Perhaps AT&T paid Motorola more than other manufacturers, so it's a matter of arguing over money.

Unlocked, or unlockable? If they are unlocked out of the box... I don't know. Maybe if presented with a choice (what Moto is doing), they would say no. But they wouldn't push for it up front. Maybe?? I don't know.
I still think they are just unlockable, and not unlocked out of the box. HTC allows for an unlock solution (my guess is so does Samsung). Not sure on LG. Moto decides to ask carrier permission.
I still see no reason why AT&T would approve such a thing. We haven't had a carrier-sold Nexus, and I'm not holding out hope we will. Look at how AT&T has crippled Android before: no sideloading, limiting apps, etc. And now you think they'll play nice with everyone?? LOL
I respect you, and I respect your opinion. I politely disagree. I don't think AT&T is the most advanced-user-friendly carrier (or dev-friendly, but we're not all devs here). Moto is certainly not the most dev friendly with the efuse and locked bootloaders. Combine the two and it's a damn mess. Shame, because I really like this lapdock feature that Moto wants to do more of.

[Q] Re-group for finding a way to root?

Hello! I know that today there is no root for KK 4.4.2 with Locked BL. But I can not find any answer to idea why we can not take 2 phones (A with unlocked BL running KK 4.4.2 and B with locked BL on KK 4.4.2) and using dump make B as clone of A? What is preventing to do so? QFuse? Special signature like ssh on iPhone? If phone A passed all signature checks while getting 4.4.2 OTA why we can not do the same for phone B?
Are there any team which is trying to find a way to root or everybody works separately? Maybe it's right time to re-group, share the information, analyze what we have and try to find new weak points?
Problem is the phone B with locked BL has /system partition write-protected and there is no way to flash a rooted dump from phone A into it.
Unlocked BL doesn't check signatures (which is what it means to have an unlocked BL) while locked BL does check for signatures (which are impossible to spoof), so you're not getting past that with a ROM dump.

It's not impossible, but just astronomically improbable. You would need the private key that Motorola uses to sign their code, that involves theft or brute forcing (which would probably take longer than the universe has been around by a large factor).
You're asking for people to try to find an exploit on a phone that is probably at EOL, it's probably not going to happen. There aren't "teams" that just sit around and try to find root exploits for every Android device out there. Yes, there are few very intelligent people that have found many of the exploits, but if they're not motivated by an $18K+ bounty on a brand new device (read: S5), then I highly doubt they'll be motivated for this device. My solution? Stick to unlockable phones from now on. That's why I moved on to the M8, even though my HD and M are both unlocked/rooted with the previous exploit.
Not sure if it works for the M but .... A root exploit has been released today for the newer motos on 4.4 & 4.4.2 (pre April 30th for Ultras).
This release was brought to us by none other then Jcase.
Please help and contribute to the bounty for all the work and talent he has shared over time here on XDA.
Root exploit is in the Moto X forum.

This is a direct quote from this thread http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/topic/46155-info-status-of-root-for-kitkat-build-182183/ on Droidrzr.com about why it doesn't work on the older Razrs:

Oh Sh~t..I think I'll sell my Razr M and buy something more flexible for rooting.
Problem is, if you want a small Android with decent specs, and I don't mean just one with a smaller screen, but also with a smaller body/bezels, Motorola's pretty much the only game in town.
For $47 shipped, I picked up what I HOPE is a BL unlocked RAZR M. In my free time, I waded through hundreds of eBay auctions till I found an M with a screenshot of something other than stock ROM and found one with CM on it.

Normally they don't go that cheap. Part of the reason might be because it has a cracked camera lens, but I bought a new one for $8.95. Possibly people also get scared off when they see a non-stock ROM because they want something that hasn't been tampered with. It's not the first time I've seen an M with CM on it that went for lower than average.
Hopefully the phone turns out to be BL unlocked and not safe-strapped. Seller said he was 99% sure it was BL unlocked. If not, no biggie, I should at least be able to get my money back if I resell it.
I might still keep looking because the phone I bought was white and I really prefer black.

What about this bootloader unlock process using AutoRoot tools?

I don't have a Droid Maxx 2 because I only use rootable phones but I stumbled on the instructions on the page at the link below and wondered if this could be a valid method. I know NOTHING about the site, the tools, the instructions, etc. I'm just curious and look around for a breakthrough from time to time.

Doesn't unlock the bootloader, sadly. This phone is on lockdown until Motorola / Verizon decides to give customers the unlock key or until someone figures out a way to hack it but seems doubtful.
This phone is getting nougat though!

Unfortunately, that website is just full bull s***. There's no auto root tools, its just click bait.
You go through all the hoops of "click here" and you google all kinds of things trying to find out whether this is malware only to find that when you click on "download" its the age-old scumbag scam of "complete one of the 3 surveys to activate link."
Don't fall for it if you have no idea how to spot a scam. If you do know how to navigate that crap, by all means check it out to see if I'm wrong as I often am. Should you be able to download this alleged auto root tools, reply with instructions, and i'll try to use it on my droid maxx 2.
thanks

Any Root Update for Sprint Variant?

I look through the threads and mostly what I see is T-mobile got a root. Other updates show regular roots but no mention of it applying to Sprint. Threads directed to Sprint don't say nor show much. Anyone can assist in getting a link or update for the root. I am looking very forward to it and also a mod for the DAC audio. For some reason it seems like an over rated feature as audio isn't that high as advertised and mind you I have the earphones that come free with the purchase.
I'm sure you'll see word either in the development section or in this thread. They'll need to get around a locked bootloader first.
Thanks Doug

Patience people. Contemporary Android is a maze of security protocols in order to get root. Not just the bootloader, but also SELinux policy, capability bounding, file-size checks, and so on. When an OEM tries to lock down a device. Really tries....It becomes hell. The phone only went on sale a week ago.
I'd suggest reading the following tale one fellow posted about his weeks long effort to chroot his Asus tablet. NOTE-his tablet had an unlocked bootloader and fastboot command access. Both are things we don't have.

Apparently the Sunshine team that finally cracked the Droid Turbo has had no luck finding an exploit on this phone. It's gonna come down to giving one to someone who can crack it and pay them if they want money... If you really need root, at this point it would be easier to buy an X-Force, you can get the unlock code from Motorola. Verizon is not letting them hand out codes for the Droid Turbo 2.
There's a few root threads to read over, no one has gotten close to cracking the bootloader yet, until that happens, perm root is not achievable on this phone.

Good luck rooting that iPhone.
There's plenty of phones better than iPhone, and which can be rooted. You just bought the wrong phone. You should stay away from any Verizon phones in general, if rooting is important to you. Or at least make sure there's an exploit (like with Droid Turbo) before buying.
Why is there an option for "unlocking bootloader" in developer's options for Droid Turbo 2?
Never understood why Verizon will leave this option on the phone but can't unlock it?
