X Play Camera - X Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So how are people finding the camera? I'm used to tapping to focus first for my pics. I've not tested the camera much yet but it seems OK. Just wondering how I can refocus it or do I have to just trust it?

If you swipe right, the third menu option is the manual focus and exposure box. Once turned on, you can drag the focus box to where you want the phone to focus. You can also adjust exposure by dragging the round slider around the box.

Ahh that definitely helps thanks.

Upload runied quality?

There is some purple-fringing (chromatic aberration) on high contrast areas, but otherwise I'm very happy with the camera.
(look at the white on the turn signs on the streetlight for an example).

Photosphere
I'm using the Google camera instead of the moto cam. Does anyone know how I get the missing photosphere functionality back?

You can't. The Moto X Play doesn't have a gyroscope, which means it won't be able to take Photospheres.

I am using the HTC camera and gallery, a friend has a Nexus 6 and sent me this link. I thought I'd give it a try and the camera is much better than the cyanogenmod camera. The below link, once downloaded, you just install the APKs, not flash them in TWRP.
Download the APKs here.
This is a quick photo I took up close using the above HTC camera.

I'm quite missing the Google Camera's panorama (never used photosphere), the Moto Camera just isn't the same. I hate having to rotate the phone with constant motion (Google's has those easy blue dots to aim for) and the resolution seems poor. Does anyone have any suggestions?

What I'd like to know is, has anyone figured out how to change the default folder for saving photos/videos? Seems like this basic feature is missing from the Moto camera...

It's there you just have to know where to look.
Start the camera first then follow information below.
See the screen shot - drag menu out from left hand edge.
Select the storage icon - then select either phone or SD card on the right side.

Once again, there's no gyroscope on this phone, so it has no way of detecting motion along the horizontal or vertical axis. Hence, assistance taking panoramas isn't possible (like the blue dots).

I understand that. However, Panorama 360 has the helper dots (it uses the compass) it just has poor resolution photos which is similar to the Moto Camera. Shame nothing can come close to Google Camera. Seems a bit of an oversight not to include a gyroscope!

Macro
What about your macro shoots?
Is there a bug or some not finalized camera code by Motorola? When I point camera for a close shoot it auto focuses, but not that well so I point focus manually and it looses focus at all, view turns worst than it was with auto focus. BUT if I point and hold focus with my finger I see that camera zooms and focuses quiet well just it turns back to blurred position. So, as I understand it can focus closer just the code or a bug doesn't let it and bringing back to the starting auto focus position.
Any solutions?
Tried lot of camera apps (stock, HTC camera, Google camera, VSCO camera, FV-5 full version, Open camera) but problem still exists.

depends on conditions
lower lighting I use iso of 4 or 8 depends though
surprisingly indoors, I just use tungsten or fluorescent
thats one huge reason why i liked in previous os versions you couldn't save settings. Ideally, because the shot changes, I would want a new set of settings (as long as it was default to 5 mp I'm a happy camper, samsung focus users on the other hand begged for the camera saving settings)
The camera is surprisingly more usable now, and really shines in outdoor photos. I'll try your iso settings when I'm inside.
One thing I hate, with all of my heart, is the white striping over the flash. It's printed on the plastic that is attached to the battery cover. It ruins pictures that use the flash, especially when the subject is medium-close. You just see these really ugly yellow-white bars over the image. It's a real dealbreaker so I try not to use the flash at all.
I've been planning my attack to remove it without removing the entire plastic piece. The stripes feel slightly raised, but i'm sure it can be sanded down and cleaned with a light solvent. Anyone got any ideas?
What's the use of the white stripe? Does it disperse the flash evenly to prevent harsh tones?
Not sure of its intended purpose. Plenty of other phones just have the LED under a clear plastic cover and they take pictures just fine. It's almost as if it was put there to intentionally ruin shots with the flash!
its supposed to act as a light "defuser" (sp), but it sucks.

more pics - dvp does have a good camera
on my way to the gym today i took a bunch of pix with the dvp... about 70% were crap. green, blurry, to dark... this was all outside in blasting 90+ sun i also took a few shots in the very brightly lit gym.. but it was a blur-fest.
here are some non-crap ones.
(i'm running mango beta 2 and 212)
I think the best feature relevant to the DVP camera is "tap to snap" -- being able to tap on the screen to take the photo instead of pressing that infernal camera button has led to less blurry shots for me.
hrmm.. never tried the tab-to-hopefully-not-blur
i'll try that tomorrow.

Is "tap to snap" a Mango feature?
tap to snap pix, for me, are as good (bad) as using the button... oh well
then its probably how the camera is being held
steady hand on any camera, not just the dvp
also while the dvp takes good shots, you also should try some sort of editing too if needed. Autofix is a powerful thing
In darker lighting increase iso gain and play with the settings till you get a proper image. Also the nokia camera lense from the n8 is unbelievable
I wish Dell would add an anti-shaking setting to the camera like the Samsung Focus. When this setting defaulted to on in the Focus NoDO release, picture quality went way up. This, plus some better color correction, would make the DVP camera acceptable.

Did anyone notice that some devices can turn on HDR on the Google Camera app but we can't on the moto X.

The only differences I have found are photosphere panoramic built in and it takes pictures faster really quick focus. All the pictures I have taken look the same.
Google Camera crashed 3x with me while taking photos with flash on low light. I removed it.
I like the interface on the Motorola camera, but the Google one is improved. It will nice to have photosphere back though.

These images were taken with everything set on Auto. The first picture of the pair is the stock camera app, the second picture of the pair is with the google camera app.
Honestly, I can't really see much of a difference.
In this set, the built in camera app more closely matches actual color from streetlights.
Disappointingly, both camera apps turn the color to Magenta in very low light.
These pictures look like the same picture copied over.
Yeah I see no difference between apps.

I found a problem with the Google camera, can't focus right in low light with flash, I tried like a 10 pics but always out of focus, it's just too fast and give no chance to get the focus correctly, the moto camera with the first pick get the focus correctly, here the first pick it's with Google camera and the second it's with moto camera
PD: I take a screen shot with the crop at 100%, that way is easy to see the focus on the cow

Losing HDR mode in the Google Camera on the MotoX kind of sucks for sure. Hope they fix that very soon.
As for twist-to-launch, that is a feature specific to the Motorola camera app, so Google would need to add it as a feature to the stock Android Camera for it to work.

Here is a couple from today....
Are these being alerted when uploaded? I assume they aren't 21MP files being uploaded to the forums
I think the problem is people have crazy expectations. Its a good camera but its never going to touch a dedicated camera with large sensors. I'm now switched to Google Camera because Moto one doesn't really seem to be much better.
These are using Moto camera still.
Low light shots I took while messing around with our prototype mini 3D printer this morning. Just quick snaps, no effort at all... Pretty impressive, although reds seem to be a little off -- oversaturated.

I've noticed when you double tap to zoom in it zooms in A LOT. Meaning you see more noise/blurriness. In other phones when you double tap to zoom it doesn't zoom in as much so it looks sharper. But the camera is actually pretty good, SA sometimes gets it completely wrong in low light situation and the shutter lag is ridiculous. Takes too long to take a picture.

They seemed to have improved it significantly in the Xperia X, which is ridiculous as its specs aren't more powerful than the Z5. They are also advertising 0.6 shutter response from standby and "almost instantaneous" shutter response from normal use of the app. Yet if you look at a few of the MWC demos, you can see the shutter response is faster but it still captures very slightly after... On the show floor there were two demos emphasizing the autofocus and shutter from standby, but few people filming there actually showed the shutter response conclusively.
Third party apps have the potential to have less shutter lag but I found the on-screen camera button and physical button to be often unresponsive, probably because the autofocus is badly optimized.

It's only 8.3 MP if you use 3rd party software. Reason is Sonys pathetic, no self-esteem move to LIMIT the API-2 interface to 8.3 in case 3rd party apps are being used.
Just so you understand this: You paid for a phone and Sony LITERALLY FREAKING TELLS YOU what software to use with it. They actually block it. And the best part of it, they don't even get their own freakin software straight.
I was so looking forward to this phone, seriously. Now I'm going to sell it, hope some dude pays ~650 $ and get me an S8 or HTC. Never ever ever again Sony. This is so so so ridiculous.

Nothing to enjoy here. Camera MX does not offer Camera API-2 support and hence can't make use of manual exposure or ISO settings. It's not about using "some" 3rd party app but making use of the cameras potential.

But is there any difference in image quality between those apps and the stock app? I've tried AOSP with the Google Camera and that is so much better than stock. There isn't really any difference between open camera and the xz2 camera app

Only if you have flashed AOSP (well maybe it works on stock but then there is no difference in image quality). The images are much sharper, have more detail and in low light they are a bit brighter. HOWEVER, you lose the noise reduction so there is a lot of noise in the images. You can correct this with an app like lightroom, but thats a lot of work if you just want to take a quick photo of something.
I've made some test photo's with AOSP and google camera a while ago. It was a lot darker when I took the bicycle photo's than the images suggest, but zoom in and you see the amount of detail (and noise) it has.
