Hideous image processing - Xperia Z5 General

What the actual ****, Sony?
I always noticed something was sheit about this camera and I kind of knew it was about the image processing but never realised just how had it is.

How could you possibly ruin a picture so much? Not to mention the raw image from the 21mp shot has a much better quality than a frame from a video!
Does anyone know of a way to disable this?

Sony has messed up the camera with lag to launch it and to do a capture... I dont understand really what is the issue to improve that. I have readed that RAM is important.

RAM might be related to the launch issue but where is the problem in just disabling the anti-noise algorithm altogether?

Yeah, where is it. Algorithm is all broken around... Really it isn't understable. Sometimes I think if Sony has something under contract with the others companies and it messes up the software post process.... It's the unique lame in Sony right now if you see the Galaxy S7, LG G5, Huawei P9... Curious thing that Sony is the coolest thing in the sensor industry. Casualty or...

It's nothing short of ridiculous that this phone does not fully support Camera 2 API yet. Sony has been marketing this phone all around the camera but they don't deliver anything.
I'll put up a post on the Sony forums and see how it turns out.

So if we want a good quality picture, record in 4k and take a screenshot? Lol

The best camera in the world, isnt? lol

I've noticed when you double tap to zoom in it zooms in A LOT. Meaning you see more noise/blurriness. In other phones when you double tap to zoom it doesn't zoom in as much so it looks sharper. But the camera is actually pretty good, SA sometimes gets it completely wrong in low light situation and the shutter lag is ridiculous. Takes too long to take a picture.

That is literally what I did when I took a bike trip yesterday. Recorded about 1:40 minutes which resulted in almost a gigabyte of video and I extracted exactly 47 still images out of that.
You need a lot of storage but it's a possible workaround. Sad this camera ruins an otherwise great phone.

Nothing comes close as stock app with manual controls, like samsung or lg camera apps.
I tried that camera fv 5 or how it was called actualy, and i was not impressed at all.
I really like this phone, but I am dissapointed with the camera.
Also camera interface sucks, it is okay for auto mode but for manual mode you have to go in settings just to change iso or hdr? Really Sony?

They seemed to have improved it significantly in the Xperia X, which is ridiculous as its specs aren't more powerful than the Z5. They are also advertising 0.6 shutter response from standby and "almost instantaneous" shutter response from normal use of the app. Yet if you look at a few of the MWC demos, you can see the shutter response is faster but it still captures very slightly after... On the show floor there were two demos emphasizing the autofocus and shutter from standby, but few people filming there actually showed the shutter response conclusively.
Third party apps have the potential to have less shutter lag but I found the on-screen camera button and physical button to be often unresponsive, probably because the autofocus is badly optimized.

Image Compression! Let us express!

With a quick searched on the internet, I noticed that the Galaxy S4 has a sensor camera equivalent / equal Xperia Z, but your pictures are generated with 4Mb to 6.5MB, while the Xperia Z is 1Mb to 2.5Mb.
Follow the link to get an idea of the difference image!
We must inform Sony that we are completely unhappy with the image compression!

First off, replace "we" with "I". Second, SGS4 uses an unknown sensor with the same megapixel count as the Sony Exmor sensor, but then megapixels mean nothing anyway. Also, while there is a big discrepancy in file size, there is a not very big discrepancy in photo quality while zoomed in (compare photos at http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_s4_vs_sony_xperia_z-review-915p8.php) if you look at image sharpness and ignore colour saturation and that sort of things. I don't see why the XZ photo file sizes should then be doubled just because the SGS4 has larger photo sizes.
compression isn't bad, in my opinion
its the same sensor.check anadtech s4 dissasmbly.by the way they are using same sensor with different module.i dont have a Z or S4 to talk about quality though
The images quality will much much more better if Sony reduce the compression, or at least let user decide jpeg quality.
I think the issue isn't about compression but denoise algorythms.

The amount of compression/suppression applied is ridiculous.
Does the "developers" of the cam part know anything about digital photography at all?
Paying premium for a low end camera....Sony think the customers are stupid?

With pleasure. (both are done on auto/superior auto respectively)
Xperia Arc: ~2.5MB, super long exposure times and thus overexposed images
Xperia V: ~2MB, slightly oversaturated blues
No XS though
But seriously, XZ is pretty darn good for the file size already.

Suggest people use flickr so we can see the settings used. tapatalk is useless at understanding how the camera works.
if you cannot do that then mention iso, shutter speed & scn mode (if any). This will get you looking at these parameters and help to understand why shots don't turn out as expected or how to get better ones.

Is anyone else finding the shutter lag really bad on this phone? After I press the capture button it seems like it freezes the frame and takes a photo, but then clearly continues the exposure for another half second or so before finalizing, meaning if you move the camera it goes into blursville.
In general it seems pretty bad at capturing anything in motion (and I mean mild motion, not requiring sports mode).
I'm really stunned as to how Sony can have allowed such a flawed camera onto a flagship device. In ideal conditions like sunlight etc it takes AMAZING photos, pretty much digicam quality... but you almost need a tripod to get a clear shot in lower light conditions. It's a bit of a bummer for a device which is in every other respect awesome.

Dear all,
Would you mind checking the manufacturing date of your Z1C and share?
I wrote in a different thread:
I bought the device and I was very disappointed with the camera. I tried different modes and settings and in all of them the same photos I took with the galaxy S2 were significantly better (more focused, less noise, more vivid colors, more details in crops..) ! (regular scenes/light conditions).
In addition I have the flash leakage problem..
Also the camera looses focus during video capture..
...
I think maybe the first manufacturing line has these problems which are also reported online, could you kindly check the manufacturing date of your device?
Mine is Oct, 2013 (black version)
Thanks !!

I'm also a bit disappointed by the camera to be honest. My previous phone was the galaxy S2. In my opinion the camera performs pretty bad under low lightning (manual mode, no settings touched) and also not really special under normal conditions. Maybe I just suck at photographing.
I don't have any flash leakage problem though.

Good app, but i needs more options.
First, it needs a post-render option in case something went wrong after the recording time, can you imaine losing an our of video because you forgot and close the recen apps?
also, the screen should be able to urn off while recording, why? because is a big battery drainer. By trying it i spent 6 minutes recording 1 picure every second by 6 minutes, and afer that i lost 4% of my battery, taht say, in 150 minutes my battery will drain completely, and considering tat you can set the time up to 24 hours...
Thanks :good:

if there are objects present within the focal distance, the focus will change
set the focus to infinity, then try
of course time lapses are not recommended for macro level videos when you have no manual focus control

I tried everything, it's always present (sometimes more, sometimes less). And I'm taking timelapse of distant trees and sky, so nothing comes in the way.
But I'm beginning to think it has something to do with Z3 compact camera sensor.
I tried shooting timelapse with Lapseit pro which worked perfectly on my Xperia P, but on Z3c, the same thing happens as with this time lapse addon.
Strange...

Is Sony cheating us about the 23mp?

Read the Edit from 10.04.16 below, before posting "funny" comments...
Hey guys, could it be possible that the mighty 23mp of our z5 is in reality only 8mp upsampled to 23mp? No third-party app shows the full resolution like on older sensors of Xperia z1-z4.. And Sony won't give the "super" image processing algorithm to the Sony "open" device project!? Maybe the Devs from Sony just don't know how to hide the 8mp to 23mp techniques.. So they don't give it free to other Developers to make the poor z5 camera better? The details when zooming by 23mp shots are so washed out and muddy, I can't believe it's actually 23mp.. I guess because of that, Sony is hiding something.. Don't they? Why else they are acting so strange?
10.04.16 Edit:
okay, maybe it has a 25mp sensor, but Xeon explained it very good here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=66263647
If they weren't 23MP sensors, someone would've found that out a while ago and taken SONY to court for false advertising. I doubt SONY would be that dumb. And the details might look fine on a normal day, as long as you don't zoom in too far. The maximum resolution is 5520 x 4140 which is really, really big. Even the Galaxy S6 with a 16MP camera only goes up to 3984 x 2988 on a 4:3 ratio.
Edit: Here's a photo with of my dog. Then a photo of it zoomed in on his noise. Look's pretty detailed to me.

I've read that most third-party apps identify Z5 camera as only 8Mp due to a buggy system file which has a wrong identifier value of this CMOS. It seems Camera Next is a bit smarter, as mentioned below.

I think that is because Sony need to make those other apps think it is higher res as well .
I still believe Sony are software interpolating the photo's to 23MP, because the results just lack too much detail.
To be honest, I as well as many others I am sure would just prefer 12MP done right

i just tested that app it works pretty well although the burst mode is ultra slow but the quality seems clear like the ones shown in the ads
I'm also pretty sure that the 23 mp thing is just a kind of trick.... SONY won't let you know anything about the camera. If you open AIDA64 under devices it can't even detect the deviceID or sensor type.
I can't understand how 8MP resolution pics look better than 23MP
Actually it is a 25MP sensor or to be more precise 24.77MP.

Kinda nice idea but only usable in completly static scenes and with a tripod. But seems interesting. Will check it out!

Maybe... As long it brings money, everything they do seems okay?
What sort of confirms that the sensor is not the full MP rating as suggested is that all manufacturers that are using the same sensor don't have the same resolution

Well if they want to limit and resort to fixed pixel binning. They have native 25MP for the IMX300 sensor.

3rd Party Camera Apps for Xperia XZ Premium

Hey XZP owners is there any 3rd party camera apps which supports 19 mp full resolution setting. I already tried fv-5 and better camera but showing only 8 mp maximum resolution.
Open Camera is pretty much the best camera app in the store imo.

Someone posted that antuutu benchmark program says the rear camera is only 8.3MP. Maybe not an error after all. Can somebody download phone info and let us know that has the phone. I'll wont be getting my girlfriend's phone until after July 3rd

You mean this one
Sent from my G8141 using XDA-Developers Legacy app
It's only 8.3 MP if you use 3rd party software. Reason is Sonys pathetic, no self-esteem move to LIMIT the API-2 interface to 8.3 in case 3rd party apps are being used.
Just so you understand this: You paid for a phone and Sony LITERALLY FREAKING TELLS YOU what software to use with it. They actually block it. And the best part of it, they don't even get their own freakin software straight.
I was so looking forward to this phone, seriously. Now I'm going to sell it, hope some dude pays ~650 $ and get me an S8 or HTC. Never ever ever again Sony. This is so so so ridiculous.
Return it and stop complaining.
Now Camera MX showing 19 mp full resolution. Enjoy.

Nothing to enjoy here. Camera MX does not offer Camera API-2 support and hence can't make use of manual exposure or ISO settings. It's not about using "some" 3rd party app but making use of the cameras potential.
What about open camera from gp

Turn it on and see for yourself if you don't believe me.
Only 8 MP when using API2 and 1/10sec exposure time. Sony blocks it.
try this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.riseupgames.proshot2
Open camera and camera zoom allow 19.2 selection.
Also in FV5 force the legacy driver and 19.2 is available.

Interesting discussion...
Since I previously bought just about all camera apps in the past 4-5 years I confirm that the paid versions on Camera Zoom FX and Vignette both support full features. Again, these are the premium versions which do unlock extra features
Experia xz camera
An 19Mpixel camera only has 50% green 25% blou and 25%red pixels so 8,2Mpixels is not bad åt all!

But is there any difference in image quality between those apps and the stock app? I've tried AOSP with the Google Camera and that is so much better than stock. There isn't really any difference between open camera and the xz2 camera app
Open Camera crop
XZ2 Camera crop

Only if you have flashed AOSP (well maybe it works on stock but then there is no difference in image quality). The images are much sharper, have more detail and in low light they are a bit brighter. HOWEVER, you lose the noise reduction so there is a lot of noise in the images. You can correct this with an app like lightroom, but thats a lot of work if you just want to take a quick photo of something.
I've made some test photo's with AOSP and google camera a while ago. It was a lot darker when I took the bicycle photo's than the images suggest, but zoom in and you see the amount of detail (and noise) it has.
