[Q] Verizon grandfathered unlimited data plan.. S4 to Moto X Pure switch questions? - X Style (Pure) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey everybody, I have a few questions regarding the new Moto X pure., this seems like an awesome site and I'm excited to be part of the community. I have been reading through the forums and doing some research, I'm just looking for some clarification.
Some background info: grandfathered in with an unlimited data plan from Verizon. Been using an S4 for the past couple years (full retail), it is not rooted, FoxFi for tethering. Main uses for phone are pictures, phone stuff (calls/texts), games, and tethering.
The moto x pure seems like a perfect fit. Sounds like foxfi doesn't work with motorola. I know that speculating on being able to root is a tough subject but things sound promising.
Questions:
How does one transfer current phone data and plan to the newly purchased moto x pure? Should moto x pure be rooted first?
What is a good tethering app?
How does one keep phone "simple", driving factor for rooting is to gain ability to tether?
If phone has ability for external storage, why would people want >16GB?
Lastly, how sweet is that bamboo back gonna look?!?! Wonder if you could woodburn some designs in there?

I'm in the same boat as you, (upgrading from Verizon Galaxy S4) but unfortunately I lost my unlimited data plan already because of someone else on the account.
Anyway, you can keep the unlimited data plan very easily. The only thing you need to do to get Verizon service on your new Moto X Pure is get a working Verizon nano sim card, and you can do this two ways.
1. This option is great because you don't have to deal with Verizon at all. You take your micro sim card from your S4, cut it along the edges, and transform it into nano sim card. I know this sounds risky, but there are countless tutorials on how to do this, and there are even cutters you can buy on Amazon for about $4 that will cut it perfectly. Further, the only information on the sim card that needs to be read by the phone is in the very center, so there is room for some error.
2. You can call Verizon customer service or go to a store and ask for a new nano sim. Just don't talk to them about changing plans and you will be able to get a free nano sim and keep your data plan.
I have some high confidence that someone is going to root this Moto X fairly easily. We already have an unlocked bootloader, and that has made some methods possible that we could probably achieve root with. But you do not need to root it first. I'm going to play around with stock android and see how long I can live without root. (I'll probably give up in the first month XD)
As for tethering options, I remember reading somewhere on this forum that Motorola was going to add a native option. Whether the app is free to use or not has yet to be determined, but if all else fails, I use Barnacle Wifi Tethering and it is very consistent.
Your Moto X will be "simple" out of the box. That is one of the selling points. It's not gonna have touchwiz or any other unwanted skins, but it'll be pure android (hence the "Moto X Pure"). Further, the Moto X is being sold directly to consumers so the carriers can't get their mitts on it and load it up with bloatware. So as long as you don't download too many apps, your phone will be simple and fast.
Internal storage: You're right, 16GB and a microsd card slot will be sufficient for many users. I was considering this option as well. However, I have a 64GB microsd, which I keep over 45GB of music on and I don't want anything else on the card. So I bought a 32GB phone, which I'll keep apps, photos, and videos on, while the card will hold all of my music. It's all about personal preference.
BTW, android Marshmallow (the new android release coming this Fall) will allow the microsd card to be considered apart of the phone storage. So you can put anything on it that you would on your phone's storage. Buying a 16GB phone and a 64GB/ 128GB microsd card can definitely save people money!
I don't know anything about the bamboo or other wood designs, I got black leather with champagne accents. So excited, haha.

Use a cutting tool. They have one in most of the T-Mobile stores in the area, not sure about Verizon stores, but they should. Go in ask if they have a sim cutter and if you can use it.

I highly advise against cutting down a SIM, especially since we have a SIM tray and not a slot, too many jams and breakage issues.
Go to the local T-Mobile or Verizon store, whichever is applicable, and have them transfer your number to a real nano SIM.
There are plenty of referenced out there as to why you should never do this a quick Google search will find, including it could compromise your warranty... Apple was kind of famous for this, and there is no reason that Moto couldn't consider this "abuse" as well (although I have no point of reference for that statement). Also note that very old full size SIMs can have stuff in them beyond the edges of the 4FF SIM size.

I want to thank you for an advice. I ordered one from amazon and work on that. Verizon blocked users like me from getting a new Nano SIM, I would be very surprise if they let me use the tool to cut it... Problem is with new unit and new Nano is that Verizon will not activate it on old grandfathered unlimited plan. Based on conversation with Verizon rep, that plan is coded different and new Moto XPE thru new Nano would coded differently. To me it's clean talk, Verizon doesn't want to have new, better and faster phones on old unlimited plan because I would burning their data...

You should do some Googling... Lots of people have gotten nano Sims on unlimited data plans, but your call. Good luck and enjoy your new phone

I have grandfather unlimited data and I cut my sim myself with a tool I bought on amazon. I popped the newly cut nano sim into my moto x pure and it was good to go. Verizon signal pops right on when you turn your phone on and it does not mess up your plan. I have been using this cut sim since the phones came out.

Moto E verizon - xt1528 postpaid success

its been a while since i have been able to contribute as an android user, but I lost my iPhone 5c that I had been on (including 2 warranty replacements) for 18 months. I had just gotten a warranty replacement and did not have "Find my iPhone turned on". I had to think fast because I wanted a phone today and was budget conscious. Temporarily, I switched back to an old 3G phone -- a non-smartphone. Verizon had always been hesitant to activate pre-paid phones on post paid accounts. Some people found work arounds for the late 2013 Moto G which was intended for Big V's prepaid customer base.
With the Moto E (2nd gen) available on prepaid for Verizon (XT1528) and it being an LTE phone comments on many Android related sites mentioned that it honored Verizons LTE SIM unlocked policy. That is true, but they could have still blocked the IMEI from activation on a post paid.
I got this phone for $70 at Best Buy today and was determined to activate it. I decided to go the route of Verizon's online customer service. Without any hesitation the rep activated it for me and also allowed me used the Micro SIM that came with the device. The Moto E 2nd gen is a diamond in the rough, even for post paid use.
If you have an existing Verizon phone with a Micro SIM -- you should be able to just pop in without a hassle. Since, I was going from a 3G feature phone and since my lost iphone 5c had a nano-sim I had to "call it in". No troubles at all.
This is great news. I bought one last night hoping they will let me activate it too.
The website is asking me to call them, so I will have to. I am moving from another 4G LTE phone, but want a phone to tether my unlimited data with.

Yes you are right. If you try the online self-activation tool, it does tell you to call them. The IMEI is clearly flagged in their system.
I just used the 'Contact US' feature at the top of the page and started a live chat with a rep under the account services category. I received no pushback at all. We have three lines with them. We pay a lot more with them then we would even with ATT. I was even willing to take my line and walk if they gave me a hard time on this. Surprisingly -- nothing. I even prefaced my request with --- "I know you guys don't like to do this". Even that didn't prompt a response.
One thing I should point out...2 things actually. And I know that people looking for a budget phone or temp phone. aren't going to care.
- The phone comes with a crippled version of Moto Assist (now known as just "Moto") which gives a wide array of do not disturb features. My wife has the late 2013 Droid Ultra and she has way more options than me. Apparently the new Moto X and Droid Turbo have the full features of this app.
-This phone doesn't support the LTE advanced calling. Again, this shouldn't be a big deal. Verizon didn't have it for the longest time, call and data at the same time.
I just bought a micro-sim to nano-sim converter so I can simply swap sim-cards between each phone.
Does Verizon still require you to activate the imei if the same sim is used?
*edit* Great, I can't unlock the bootloader. Moto's website says the device doesn't qualify.

i think you should be all set using the same SIM. be sure to post and let us know how it goes. This phone is no Droid Turbo or GS6 but basically -- it gets the job done. I have used it for about 24 hours now. I find the battery no worse than the iPhone 5c. it may be a bit better.

Carriers tend to opt-out of Moto's bootloader unlocking program. The AT&T, Cricket, Verizon, etc bootloaders cannot be unlocked yet.

I highly recommend the LG Transpyre over the E for Verizon. I got the Transpyre for $50, and it's got root and TWRP and CM12 on the way.

Xev something you should know that I have not found a workaround for yet. I have a grandfathered unlimited data plan and use hotspot tethering. All android phones on Verizon with 4.4.4 or later have a block on hotspot tethering. The phone checks your subscription (software check) to Verizon's hotspot tethering add on service then will not enable hotspot tethering.
Google definitive guide to unlimited Verizon hotspot tethering on XDA for what things need to be in place on the Moto E 2015 LTE to tether.

my response would be be --- of course! Would you expect any different?
the verizon version of this phone has not been rooted yet. So if you had unlimited data and some root-only app to tether -- its not going to work. If tethering is so important ...switch to a metered plan or get a new phone..
This phone is not an iPhone 6 or a GS6 or a Droid Turbo. My whole point in starting this thread was
1) the phone can be activate on postpaid plans
2) its a very decent phone -- as a phone for someone with simple needs or who needs a "burner" (meaning a phone for short term use --- not the other meaning of burner lol)

Did you buy the phone unactivated online or in-store activated? That is before you inserted your postpaid SIM.

from what I have been told, the Verizon prepaid phones are sold unactivated on Amazon but activated if you buy it through Best Buy.
I bought mine at Best Buy. I got the same error message that some of you got when you tried to type the phones identification number into Verizon's website. At that point I struck up a live conversation with a Verizon representative using their online chat. I've always found the online chat to be very competent and usually better than phone support. However the online chat support gets swamped and it isn't always available all day long

I bought a xt1528 at walmart the other night for $64. I recently soft-bricked my s4 and have not been able to get it back yet. Its been about 5 days, and I cannot go without a phone - so it works for me as a temporary phone. I just popped my SIM out of my S4 and threw it in the Moto E and fired it up. No problems. Not bad for a $65 phone actually, I would recommend it for anyone in a similar situation. Now off to figure out my S4 issue. :crying:
My xt1528 should be here today. I'm replacing a nerfed LG MS659, and the E is an upgrade in every category for half of what I paid for the LG. Lets hope the bootloader can be unlocked soon!

Having now activated the Moto E on my account twice in the past 3 weeks with VZW assistance, I want to say that I think you approached the conversation wrong. I am not sure if the dialogue you typed out was an online transcript or your recollection of a phone conversation. Both times, I did it using verizon's online chat support.
Tips:
1. You should not say up front "this was a prepaid phone, that I got from _______ " Don't even get into that. Tell VZW that you want to activate another phone on your account and that you have the IMEI and SIM number read to give them. In my case I told them I needed to temporarily use a different phone while I contemplated a long term replacement. This extra info was true in my case but probably not needed.
2. The rep takes the IMEI, it goes through, and then they ask for the SIM number. The sim that comes with the Moto E 1528 (2015 edition Verizon package) looks like any other Verizon LTE Micro SIM.
3. In the past with Verizon 3G prepaid phones --- people used to say that the Amazon models came unactivated and could be activated on prepaid plans while the Best Buy were pre activated in store and could not be activated on verizon post pay plans. This wisdom does not apply here. I bought my phone at Best Buy.
4. You mentioned that you purchased "on ebay". The only problem I could see you having is if you bought a used phone but I don't think you did right?
5. If you acquired this Moto E for verizon, unopened and never activated, you can activated. From what I understand you never even got to the point of giving them the IMEI and SIM number.
6. Don't mention the phone. Don't mention pre pay. Once you get a rep (online preferable) that will allow you give them the IMEI and SIM --- get back to us on here. I think you will have your phone working at that point.

It was an unopened Ebay purchase. I contacted them online last time.. So I contacted them again (fingers crossed that they didnt read the last conversation with them) and stated I wanted to swap a phone on the account. Verification, then what's the IMEI and SIM numbers. Went off without a hitch.
Way to go man. Now we have proven that it works. One thing I have noticed is that this phone lags quite a bit, especially with encryption turned on. Google actually allowed the 2015 Moto E to bypass their own policy stating that all 5.0 devices would have encryption turned on by default. The policy has been temporarily lifted. I try out a lot of devices and also consume a wide swath of "tech media". Even from the very pro-Android crowd, 5.0, 5.01, 5.02 have been a nightmare for large numbers of people on numerous devices. I totally understand why Verizon and Motorola are going with a 5.1 only or 5.1.1 on the Droid Turbo. They have it to get it right. My brother has a 2013 Moto X and he is so happy that he never got 5.0.x. He will be upgraded directly to 5.1.x as well.
Thanks.. I haven't had a chance to play with the moto e yet, so I dont know how fast/slow it is (gave it to my mom as soon as it was up and running). I have the M8 that was rooted till 5.0.1 came out. Haven't noticed too many things wrong with it since, other than I cant currently root my phone.
so Today it looks like they blocked it. I tried first with the online chat and then I just got off the phone with tech support and neither could activate the phone. I followed the suggestions here and never mentioned prepaid, they asked for IMEI and SIM and then got blocked. No amount of trying by either tech would solve it, so it looks like that was a short-lived workaround. Thank you Verizon.
My biggest beef is that I'd happily buy the phone on postpaid for more money if they'd only offer it. I like the phone and the specs beat out the other low-end phones V offers currently.

What's really annoying is that their policy clearly states that 4G prepaid phones are not locked, nor is there any 6 month requirement for them:

Verizon BS - Typical

So I had my Nexus 6 delivered today, the open version ordered from Google. Went in to Verizon to have them switch over my sim (I had a larger sim with my LG G3, so had to get a smaller sim), and after 45 minutes of back and forth, they refused to put the device on their network because as they say "We have a Nexus 6 device already on our network, so you can purchase it from us". That was my official answer given to me from them. We tried two different technicians, managers, etc, and they downright refused.
I'm over this crap with them, spent my entire lunch hour doing this, dealing with getting the device after it wasn't able to be delivered to my address, multiple trips to the local fedex office.. The second I can cancel my account with them, I'm out.
If you have Verizon and want to order one of these, you'll have to order their blue piece of crap (I wanted the white version) and the only phone on for any of the networks that wont work elsewhere.

well, there are many many many people using a google play store version n6 on verizon, without issue. i suggest you talk to reps in a different store.

I guess things are hit or miss at Verizon. When the store couldn't help me I had them call Technical Support, tech support assigned a nano sim from the store to a dummy IMEI number and activated it on my account. Took them 10 minutes to do what the store couldn't figure out in an hour. They have dummy IMEI's, just have to reach someone that knows what they are doing...

there are a gazillion post on this topic. You can cut down your G3's SIM card and use it - SIM cutters are cheap on Amazon.
Or you can order a nano SIM card from Verizon - you can tell them you are buying a used S6 and they will mail you one. Then when it arrives, all you need is the IMEI of a Verizon Android device that takes a nano SIM card and you can have a chat rep activate the nano SIM they send you using that IMEI. You can usually find someone who posted a picture of a box with an IMEI on it - Moto X will work as will S6, M8, M9, but not iPhones, those are different nano SIMs.
Or if you know anyone on Verizon who has an Android that uses a nano SIM card, you can suspend their line w/o billing temporarily to free up their phone to use it to activate the nano SIM on your line. Then when you have done that, you pop the nano SIM in your N6 and then they can put their SIM card back in their device and unsuspend their line.
I always have two Verizon sim cards stored in case the next phone I get uses a different sim card size. They're easy to get by contacting a VZW rep or ordering one online from some seller for cheap. Activating them through chat is easy. You can also activate it yourself by switching your device through My Verizon, but since the Google Play version isn't a Verizon IMEI, that option won't work. I avoid having to go deal with VZW reps in person

I'd have to second this. I had a 2014 Moto X and just swapped the SIM with no issues. However, I think they easiest thing for you to do would be to order a cheap SIM cutter. Amazon.com - Aerb SIM Cutter

Yes you can cut the micro sim to nano sim as many people here said, but if i was you i cut verizon first for that kind of service. dont' know about other carriers, but with ATT the last few months i can just drop in their store and changed sim 3 times (2 for me and one for my brother) as i changed phone from iphone to inew v8 to oneplus and last week to nexus. Never has a problem and no charge. In and out in about 15 min for them to activate the imei in their system with new sim
I have sprint. I went into a sprint store with a n6 I ordered from Motorola directly. They got a nano Sim, activated my device and didn't even charge me a penny. I had Verizon but canceled both lines I had with them because of customer service. I broke contracts on both lines.

The easiest thing to do when a Sim card is too big is.....? That's right, cut it. I did that with many phones. Had the note 4 and wanted to switch to a white 64gb nexus 6 from the play store and just popped in the Sim from my Note 4 and it worked without having to do anything. Yes on the my Verizon mobile app it says "non Verizon device" and that alters my life in exactly zero ways.

Going in to a store to have them change out your sim card is a waste of time. Even if you happen to have a sane service provider who won't give you a hard time. Why? Because it is a waste of time. If you don't have a drywall knife (some call them "box cutters" or "utility knives"), go to home depot and buy one, then trim the plastic off from around the contact pad until it fits the phone. (note: take off multiple THIN slices so you don't stress the chip).

What to expect on Verizon?

I've never had an unlocked phone before. I currently have an M8 (nano SIM) active on Verizon. I've read reports from people and their N6 experience. Some say it was simply a matter of moving the sim into the new phone. Others say they went through hell to get it to work. Does Verizon need to get involved? Is it really a case by case basis? Did people who had trouble do something wrong? Any insight appreciated.
I don't think we'll know until someone tries. As you had said, Verizon wouldn't issue SIMs or activate the N6 for the longest time. They have a terrible track record of allowing devices they don't sell on to their network. I'm on Verizon, and will probably go to Fi when it arrives. Cheaper that way anyhow.

I am in the same situation as you, never having had an unlocked phone and on Verizon. Have a Note 4 now and hope I can just walk in and get a SIM from them without problems, don't want to be put in the position of cutting down a micro-sim to a nano-sim size. Seen Youtube vids and yes it looks easy, but if someone can mess it up it is me. Hope they don't give us a hard time.
there was a small period of time where the XPE was having activation issues for new SIMs but existing SIMs worked fine. i anticipate this will remain the same. existing SIMs will work fine.
i do remember some issues with either the '13 X or some other models that were unable to do simultaneous voice/data but was eventually resolved.
I bought a nexus 6 on day 1. I was coming from a note 3 with a micro sim .I did not deal with Verizon at all. I cut my sim to make it a nano. Threw it in my Nexus 6 and the rest is history. Been using it ever since and when i get my 6p im just gonna transfer that sim into the 6p
I've cut down a sim card before. I had the HTC Rezound and when I ordered the Galaxy S4 I didn't want to go through the hassle of getting a Micro Sim from the store. The Rezound had a full size sim. There are sim templates online. Download and print one out. Cut the template EXACTLY and place on your Sim card. Trace in Pencil and then get a quality pair of scissors. Easy as that. They also make Sim card cutters online you can buy really cheap.
you do not even need a template...a good pair of durasheer type scissors and just trim all the plastic around the gold contacts off and you are good to go.

I called up and told them that a friend was giving me a Motorola Nexus 6, but I didn't have the phone yet so I couldn't activate it over the phone, and requested the nano-SIM.
It arrives tomorrow and I plan on putting it in an adapter and into my Rezound and activating it. That way on delivery day, I will just swap the SIM into the new phone. No guarantees, but I read this worked for the X Pure.
This is a really stupid question but I never bought a phone that I couldn't just pop my old sim card into and use right away. Are you saying I need to go buy a nano sim card from verizon and go through the activation process? I want to be able to use my phone straight out of the box so how to a buy a nano SIM so I have it ready to go on delivery day??
I've had unlimited data forever and I bet Verizon will claim new sim card means i'm no longer grandfathered but thats a headache for another day.

I actually did the online chat with a representitive... but yes... I took a chance and it worked out jsut fine. I figured I would get the, "If you try and activate the 6P on our network, you will not be able to. So i cannot provide you with a new nano SIM." But.. she was cool about it and told me to use an adapter and activate it on my G3 before placing the nano sim in my 6P... which was the plan anyways lol

I just went on Verizon chat and asked them for a nano-SIM and they said they would ship it out right away. They had no issue with what device it was for or anything. She said there was no need to activate it in my old phone just put it in the new phone when it arrives and it will been fine.... We shall see.

I would pre activate it... Just in case lol.. Wonder why she told me she needed a device... Seems odd... Wonder if they know people are buying the Nexus devices and they are trying to gauge interest..

I can say with confidence that we shouldn't have a problem. Here's why:
I ordered a Nexus 6 from Motorola the day it was released. The Problem was,
I was using a HTC One M7 (Micro Sim)...The Nexus 6 is a Nano Sim and Verizon
didn't support the phone. I went into Verizon thinking all they had to do was
activate a Nano Sim and all is well....NOPE! They told me I needed a phone with
the Nano Sim to activate it. Luckily the guy that was helping me ended up being
AWESOME! He found an nonactivated Iphone 5 (Nano Sim) and added to my
account and then just swapped the Nano Sim into my Nexus 6 and LTE
popped up.
So i can 99% ensure that it will work with just a Sim Swap.
Lets cross our fingers for that 1% chance

I sound like the odd man out here, so I must just gotten the nitwit of the bunch. Anyways, I ended up just ordering a "noosy 3rd gen sim card cutter" (from EBay, as I had an absolute nightmare TWICE with Amazon on this specific product for some reason), and feel like I'll be set to go.
It's literally a paper punch, but for sim cards. While I feel I could trim them with no issue, for ~$10 I felt like the added speed and surity of it all seemed like a no brainer to me

Ya.... I felt like I got pretty lucky.. i expected to be given a lot of crap especially because I just switched to their newer/cheaper data plan and currently have 0 phones that use their silly monthly payment plan to buy a phone.
I spoke with a local Verizon rep in the same building as my work; he told me that I would be unable to activate my Nexus 6P on Verizon; I asked him about activating another phone and swapping that sim to the N6P, to which he responded, "Yeah, as long as they're (the sim card) the same size."
I take take his word with a grain of salt, as he seemed to think that the Nexus 6P was just the PLUS version of the standard Nexus 6; just like Apples iPhone 6 and iPhone 6+

If you have an active Verizon sim card just put it in the 6P. If it's a micro then cut it, it still works. Another trick is if you happen to have a IPhone6 IMEI or any phone that is on the Verizon phone list that is Nano SIM you can use that in lieu to activate your 6P.
My friend just got a moto x pure and he just threw in his nano Sim and it worked right , plus tethering is unlocked since verizon doesn't have their mits on the phone first.

My wife and I are thinking of switching to Verizon as the AT&T service here is pretty bad. Ive seen some webpages that are kinda iffy on this phone since Verizon doesnt sell it directly. So, id like to hear if anyone has used this with Verizon and if they had any issues with it. Thanks.

There are many of us here. I just got the 6P Monday and it works great on Verizon. I was already a customer so all I needed to do was swap sim cards but I'm sure it won't be a problem getting a new card when you sign up.
I am with Misterxtc on this one, I did not contact Verizon or anything all I did was pull the sim from my old phone, pop it in my Nexus 6P and I have been having just as good service as I did with my GS6.
I pulled my old VZW SIM and no issues. Even swapped back and forth between it and Project Fi

I had a big issue getting the Nexus 6P on Verizon and I was already a customer. Basically neither Verizon Corporate store or the tech support hotline could fix the issue. My old phone had a micro SIM so I needed a new SIM but the new SIM could not activate in the Nexus 6P. Basically after some research I realized that I had to activate the new nano SIM in another phone. One option was to buy an adapter that allows the nano SIM to fit in my old phone. I was impatient so I carefully lined up the nano SIM in the micro SIM slot so it made proper contact. I called Verizon and told the rep. I have been dealing with this for days and that I needed her to just trust me. So I had her link the nano SIM with the old phone and after that, I was able to activate the SIM on the old phone. Once it was done, I just inserted the nano SIM in the Nexus 6P and it worked.
I would imagine that new customers will have same issue. You may want to see if a friend or relative has an old Verizon phone. If the old phone is micro SIM and uses a SIM tray, you will need the adapter. My old phone(LG G3) had a removal back and I was able to line up the connectors.

Here is the official Verizon Wireless webpage which will allow you to check the IMEI(option 2) and for me it said my Nexus 6P was not compatible. This was end of December.

As a few other said, if you already have the properly sized activated SIM card and/or an approved (read: sold by) Verizon device, you should be OK. If you have any friends who have an old VZW device that they aren't using and it uses the correct size SIM, go to Verizon and activate new service with that phone. Once the SIM is registered to your account, just put it in the 6p and you should be fine.
If you can only get your hands on one phone, it might be kind of janky but you could activate the first line with SIM A in the borrowed device, swap SIM A to a 6p A then put SIM B in the borrowed device, activate and place in 6p B. I guess it would come down to who you are dealing with at a Verizon store or on the phone if they'll let you do all that jockeying around. If the rep wants the sale badly enough, they should be willing to work with you. If they don't want to, I would gladly take my business to another VZW store and let someone else get the commission.
The last thought I had was that Best Buy sells the 6p. I don't know if they can sell it on VZW, but they have a slew of phones there, so you could use a display handset or another phone there to activate the SIM and then purchase the 6p?
The device is whitelisted, there's no hoops to jump through. Verizon will activate the device.
No problems activating.
Since I was already on Verizon, I just dropped my SIM in the phone. BAM! Up and running.

Not totally true in regards to the 'no hoops' comment. Yes they will activate the device but not if you are on unlimited data. They refused to activate mine without changing to a new plan so I was forced to cut my micro sim to a nano. I went back and forth for weeks with different reps, even a supervisor. No dice. This was the first week of January.
I pulled my nanoSIM out of an iPhone 6 and dropped it into a 6p with no problems.
Not sure they will activate if you don't already have an existing account -- my in-laws tried that with a phone they purchased separately without already having a Verizon account and Verizon gave them a ton of ****.
I came from an LG G2, which has a micro SIM, and I have Unlimited Data. I bought my 64GB 6P from the Google Store on January 2nd, received it and activated it on January 7th.
Verizon didn't have any problems whatsoever activating it in store with a brand new Nano SIM. I am out of contract.
Tethering works natively right out of the box. It's been a breeze so far!

I just popped the sim in. A friend I have at Verizon claims that they should be changing their policy on that particular issue soon. Hope he is right. I've been on verizon my whole life and for the last year and a half I've been on a NON-VZW Nexus 6 and now a Non-VZW Nexus P with no issues, except jealousy from the verizon guys when I walk in. From what I understand the will not give you a sim still. So you'll just need to pop it in. I'm sure we'd all be happy to elaborate on methods of getting a sim if yours is too big

I bought it directly from the Google Online Store. Paid with US credit card, shipped to US address. If I don't then Google sent me the wrong one. Any way to tell?

I just upgraded from an S4 today. Had some trouble cause the nano sim would not work on the s4 (with an adapter). Apparently the s4 cannot use it at all. Went to the VZ store and was told sorry, nothing we can do. I called VZ and got a great rep who took my info, told me to insert the nano sim into my new 6p and whala, it worked. I have to admit I was a little afraid I just bought a $500 door stop.
No problem here either. Walked my Google purchased 6P into the local Verizon store and they had the SIM chip installed and activated inside of 5 minutes. Quick and free.

I'm not positive about the S2, but I bet it has a micro sim (that's what was in my S3). The MXP has a nano sim. You'll have to either get a new sim, or cut your existing one down to nano size. I've never actually done this, but here is a tutorial on how to do it with a printable template. Seems like a good way to stress and break the contacts if you aren't very careful and using sharp tools.
They make a tool for doing this too. Your carrier's store might have one, but they'd probably rather just issue you a new nano sim and charge you an activation fee. I've been in a Best Buy that had the sim cutter in their mobile department. They let me use it, but I had just bought a phone from them. I see the cutting tools on Amazon for $7 or so, but that might not be worth it for something you'll probably only use once. However, $7 is less than what AT&T would charge me to provision a new sim.
ATT doesn't charge for new Sims unless you change more than 2 times per year.
