Having a real hard time trying NOT to default APPS - Galaxy S6 Edge+ Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Samsung has removed the option to use an app "just once" or " always" when there are more choice to run a program. .
Example: certain email links I would like to open with chrome instead of Internet.
Or: click to call defaults to phone all the time, but sometimes I have to use my viop app, Ringcentral.
Once an app has been selected it becomes default.
Any alternatives I can try?

Strange.

I have the s6 edge plus and am having the same problem! I hope it's a bug and they haven't decided to remove it.

Have you looked into clearing the defaults in settings?

Yeah but it continue to default first selected app.

Yup this is a thing, before (other phones) you had the option to select "use this time only" or make it default, the first time you select something it stays default (Go sms Pro, Nova launcher, etc)

I don't suppose anyone can confirm this happens with other Lollypop devices or just on the S6 Edge+ ??
If other devices can do it the somehow Samsung has made the app decision one time only (annoyingly)

I am pretty sure I read about this 'function' being removed with the latest version of TouchWiz . If I remember rightly it was about reducing the amount of pop up boxes that people complained about, especially the one telling you how to reset the default app. I believe in Android 6.0 there will be even less choice as the apps themselves (like twitter for example) can automatically take over ownership of a link
.

Maybe someone will make an xposed module to change this... On my note 2 i used one because kitkat and jellybean didn't have this really useful function...

[Q] Uninstall an active device admin app

Hey guys,
I've got an app called "Unlock with WiFi" installed on my rooted Nexus 4. I cannot for the life of me get the d*** thing off my phone. It had requested to be a device admin (which I had approved a while ago). However, I cannot deactivate it under Security>Device administrators...the checkbox just will NOT uncheck. I've tried uninstalling from within the app, which is what the app FAQs say to do, but it says I must first deactivate the app as a device admin.
I wasn't even rooted prior to tonight. I got so frustrated trying to uninstall it, I just did a quick root and installed TiBu...then proceeded to "Un-Install!" It looked like it had worked, I rebooted, then there it was again! I just want it gone! Any suggestions? I'd really rather not have to flash the stock images, but if that's my only option, I will -_-
I'm not familiar with the app but go into the app and find any and all settings to disable it to make sure the app is no longer running. Then go into Settings > Apps and stop the app. Then go back to Settings and remove the device from administrators. See if that works for you.
Have you tried settings >accessibility and turn it off there?

I've disabled the functionality from within the
app, but cannot disable/force close from Android settings (see attached pic). I've even tried booting into safe mode, but experience the same issues.

It's not in accessibility, only in device administrators...and Android will not let me uncheck it.

"complete action using..."

Hi Guys!
New to android after years with my iphone, and I'm loving it!
However, everytime I try to open a link etc I get a box that says "complete action using" and a list of apps I can open it with.
For example, a youtube link in the browser will ask me if I want to make the youtube app the default action.
I click ALWAYS, but then the next link I click on asks me the same message again. No matter what I do, I can not get my phone to set any defaults.
It's getting very frustrating making extra button presses to open every file and/or link on my phone.
Anyone else have this happen?
If I go to the task manager, I can see the defaults I want are in fact there, and I can clear them and start over but no matter what I do the phone just won't use them.
I'm using the stock launcher, and having the same problems with Nova.
Thanks for your advice!
Hi,
Out of interest, did you have this issue before installing Nova?

to be honest, I'm not 100 percent sure because I'm so new to this phone.
Do you recommend me uninstalling Nova? If thats what it takes to fix it, then I don't need Nova that badly!
edit: ok I removed Nova and the problem still exists
Am I the only one with this problem?
Hi,
Something to test/try but pick an app that you don't mind losing your settings or data for, e.g YouTube.
Go into Settings, General (tab), Application manager, All (tab), and find an app you've already set to be default (but it keeps asking). Go into the app and clear cache and data. Now open a link or whatever, get asked the 'default' question etc and repeat to see if that cures it.
If not we might look to clear the main cache next (will explain). Don't be put off Android or the N3 with this - both are fabulous and worst case it might just be necessary to backup your stuff and factory wipe/reset.

well, the solution for me was to factory wipe, bummer! problem fixed though.
If this happens again, I hope to find a better solution!
Thanks for your help Jonty
You could have tried clearing the defaults for the app first in settings/general/applications. (clearing the cache and data does not clear the defaults, that button is a bit lower.)

Hello,
I have cleared my main cache and still every single time I click on (for example) a name on the imdb.com website it asks me to choose and app. I have selected the App multiple times and ALWAYS hit "Always" when I choose it. Can I get help on backing up my data and then resetting my phone and then putting data, contacts, photos, etc back onto my phone.
Thank you,

[Q] Default Apps not working?

Whenever I've clicked on a phone number to call via Google Maps, it would always show up that defaulted apps and ask me what i wanted to use.
Everytime it pops up, i keep clicking "Always" for the default dialer. I thought it would set it as default, but when i had to look up a business to call their place, that "Default Apps" keep popping up. Is this in any way connected to Samsung Hubs like how screen Rotations was related to samsung hubs removal?
Is there a way to fix this? I don't want to have to click it again while driving.

I tried it myself and it went right to the dialer without a pop up. What apps is it asking you to choose from? More of a work around than a fix, but... If you do not use the other apps, can you delete them? That way you shouldn't see the pop up?

There were two, one a dialer and the other one is the Lookout. The one with the Lookout always ask to scan before dialing out. Don't get why it keep asking that.
EDIT: i think the same thing happen to the IE (Chrome) when it asked til i removed Chrome and it doesn't ask anymore. haven't tried it with the youtube yet.

Well. You are probably aware, but lookout is your security/antivirus app, so it makes sense that it scans.
Unfortunately I do not have it installed so I cannot comment on how it is suppose to act.

That not the problem. What i meant is that the default doesn't work. It always ask, even when i select "Always use as Default". I had assumed that from that, it'll always use the apps i selected as a default, but for some reasons, it isn't working.

I installed Lookout and was able to reproduce your experience. That might be the way lookout works. As a security app, it gives you the chance to scan everything before executing. OR It could just be a bug.
One thing is for sure... Lookout is the cause of your grief. You can play around with the Lookout settings, but in the end, you may have to choose what is more important to you.

App Ops available without Root!

Thanks to ragingredbull for pointing out you can shortcut to App Ops on the G4. App Ops won't officially be released until Android M but has been in AOSP since 4.3. Google hid it in 4.4 and it was no longer accessible without root. The G4 has it available. Props to LG for allowing this!!
App Ops allows you to restrict access permissions such as GPS, contacts or Keep awake for individual apps. It is basically a privacy control that the iPhone has had for a bit and is sorely lacking in Android. The G4 version works for downloaded apps only unlike a root version. It is, however, still very useful and gets you most of the way. If you find that disabling permissions for an app causes it to force close then the app is written poorly to handle null data and you will have to turn the permission back on if you want to use that app.
To access the menu, Download "Any cut" or "Quick shortcut maker" from the play store. You want to create a short cut for "Access Lock" from the app.
Open it, change 'incremental search' to ' normal search' and search for Access .
You should get a Settings option that you can expand. Look for one labeled Access Lock and click on it.
It's possible that some App Ops enabling apps may also point to the proper Activity and work the same way.
After you have made the shortcut, clicking on it will open a menu allowing you to restrict app permissions.
(now we just need a hosts blocker and firewall...)
Hm, which variant of the G4 do you have? I have a EU carrier H815 and can't find it. I scrolled through the whole list manually, but only can find the Hidden Menu Accesspoint stuff.
Only works for downloaded apps.

That app is for internal "sd card" aka the internal memory. I think the above poster is referring to the fact that some apps can't save to sd card. But that's a lollipop thing that the devs have to add to their code for it to work.

The setting variable name is in your local language.
I have a EU H815 too and I found it by searching for "lock" in my local language and picking the right activity from the listed "Settings" menu items. It's supposed to be the locally translated shortcut for the activity
"com.android.settings/com.android.settings.Settings$AccessLockSummaryActivity"
The QuickQuickShortCutMaker app only searches the translated names...
if somebody can't find access lock at another language try to change phone language to english =)
try this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=app.greyshirts.firewall to use fariwall without root
For those using Nova.
Tap and hold the homescreen (or any landing page screen), select widgets, under Nova Launcher Widgets select Activity.
From there scroll down to settings, expand settings, and select Access Lock.

Default Apps - how do I stop it making it default?

I have the S7 Edge and have come across this really frustrating issue
I have multiple apps that can open torrent files for example. If I open a magnet link it opens gives me the options for Bittorrent and Utorrent Remote.
If I select Bitorrent, then the next time it will automatically open with this app.
How do I get it to give me the option each time?

Thanks but I don't want to go and reset defaults every time i want it to open with a different app.
Extremely annoying
Yea I try and choose wisely the first time around
I agree, its very annoying that they don't give you a checkbox and you have to choose your "permanent" default every time. Its the first phone I've ever had that has done this.
Seems to be more a kind of bug... something overlooked on Samsungs side
I don't think its Samsung, I believe it's a 6.0 issue. Try the app "better open with" in the playstore and make that your default for every app. That's the workaround I've used on every Android device.
I use this
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.appiator.dampro
It can clear your default and bring back the open with dialog. Idk if the lite version can do this.
The app "Better Open With" seems to work well for me.

I just got this phone coming from an LG V10. So far, this automatic defaulting of apps after one time choosing it is highly annoying. I do not want to use Chrome to view all websites, nor do I want XDA to open up all XDA links in the app.
It would be awesome if we were prompted each time we wanted to open something that multiple apps can handle.
