[Q] Default Apps not working? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Whenever I've clicked on a phone number to call via Google Maps, it would always show up that defaulted apps and ask me what i wanted to use.
Everytime it pops up, i keep clicking "Always" for the default dialer. I thought it would set it as default, but when i had to look up a business to call their place, that "Default Apps" keep popping up. Is this in any way connected to Samsung Hubs like how screen Rotations was related to samsung hubs removal?
Is there a way to fix this? I don't want to have to click it again while driving.

Dude, don't use your phone while driving.

I tried it myself and it went right to the dialer without a pop up. What apps is it asking you to choose from? More of a work around than a fix, but... If you do not use the other apps, can you delete them? That way you shouldn't see the pop up?

There were two, one a dialer and the other one is the Lookout. The one with the Lookout always ask to scan before dialing out. Don't get why it keep asking that.
EDIT: i think the same thing happen to the IE (Chrome) when it asked til i removed Chrome and it doesn't ask anymore. haven't tried it with the youtube yet.

Well. You are probably aware, but lookout is your security/antivirus app, so it makes sense that it scans.
Unfortunately I do not have it installed so I cannot comment on how it is suppose to act.

That not the problem. What i meant is that the default doesn't work. It always ask, even when i select "Always use as Default". I had assumed that from that, it'll always use the apps i selected as a default, but for some reasons, it isn't working.

I installed Lookout and was able to reproduce your experience. That might be the way lookout works. As a security app, it gives you the chance to scan everything before executing. OR It could just be a bug.
One thing is for sure... Lookout is the cause of your grief. You can play around with the Lookout settings, but in the end, you may have to choose what is more important to you.

Hiding apps?

Is there a way to disable the visability of any given application in our menu of applications?
I like the boobs butts and babes application but get tired of my phone turning into a play ground for these people who need to make a call. Enough said.
I use apps organizer instead of the tray. If the tray gives the ability to categorize and hide apps, I will go back, but till then I will stick with apps organizer.

I was wondering the same thing as the OP. I don't need my app list cluttered by icon packs for Bettercut. Thanks, I'll try this out.
Let me know how that program works for you.. I saw some of the reviews with the link and think maybe its not what im looking for.
As I recall that app doesn't actually remove it from the tray, just makes you put in a password to launch it.

[Q] It seems my Samsung tablet was hit by some kind of malware, how to check?

The symptom is, each time I switch on my tablet, I receive a notification in lower right corner promoting something like lucky draw, game, etc. If I click on the notification, it automatically starts downloading apk. The apk is always named like yyyymmddxxxxxxxxxxx.apk. I never run those apks, I guess they are not friendly. How can I check which app I installed is doing this?

First check what you have installed recently. Could be one of those apps give spam notifications. I saw something similar on my bro-in-law phone and that was because he installed some kind of "enhancement" program to make his phone run more efficient (it didn't help bytheway).
Also, since you didn't say what OS you're running, 4.0+ has the option to disable notifications when you go to settings>applications>app name. If you find its an app you need, then that might help.
If you thinks its beyond this, then install lookout or norton from the market.
It's not malware, they're called push notification ads. Just download "Ad Blocker" (root required) from the market and it will tell you which app(s) is doing this. You can also choose to delete it from within the app.
Pretty handy.

I don't have it now, I will load it when I get it next time.
However I have the list of apps I installed because I sent it to the author of push detector. How can I send it to you? I just don't want to post it here.
I have another finding, which seems odd to me: I set the home page of chrome to be blank, and I double checked that, but each time I open the browser it always opens a search page with a lot of informations (looks like a portal but I don't like it). How can I know which app replaces my home page with such rubish?
Is it possible the 3G provider does this kind of things? (notification ads and home replacement)?

No, your network provider would have nothing to do with push notification ads or homepage replacement. And as for setting your homepage in Google chrome, are you talking about the desktop version? Because I don't believe you can make that selection on the mobile version, unless I'm missing something?
BTW, you can send that list to me in a PM if you'd like.

Try this app, it will tell you every app that has a shady ad network and you can delete it. A friend of mine had an app that was creating a ton of shortcuts all over her home screens.

In Chrome settings you can set your home page. But it seems it's the 3G provider that replaces the home page for me.

[Q] Preventing others from changing settings?

Hi
I was wondering if theres an app to prevent people from changing my settings and options within the phone. My friends are constantly touching my phones and kept changing everything up. For example, the playstore, how can i prevent them from downloading or removing any apps (even free ones).
Also how can i prevent them from changing all my apps settings? even the Settings app itself. I hate having to change it back to my preference every time they touch it.
How can i create an owner and a guest account so that the guest cannot change anything in my phone, only view it.
I think this can be the Device Administrator option?
Thanks, much appreciated!
Hi
Try applock from the market.
I think theres several different versions of applock applications for you to try.
You can passwordprotect your app's from execution with them

Have you tried not letting them use your phone? Or dont let them get to your phone. Keep your phone with you at all times. That's the best prevention.

You can also use a custom launcher such as Nova, hide the Dock, set only 1 homescreen and have just the clock on it, and then enable Extended Desktop mode without enabling PIE. See how long your friends will want to play with your phone after that

I second this idea. I once gave my phone to one of my friends to play around. I was running ParanoidAndroid and had Extended Desktop turned on. He didn't know what to do on it and lost interest immediately and gave me back my phone. LOL

Does anyone know of a program or app that works on phones that have the Location Services turned off? Probably not, I'd guess, but figured I'd ask. I leave Location Services turned off whenever I'm not using something that needs it, which is most of the time.

I don't think its possible. Without location services turned on how would an app find your phone. Just curious, why don't you have location services turned on? It isn't a big hit on battery so it doesn't make since. Unless you are one of those big brother is watching nuts.

Nuts? I don't think there's any reason to get personal here. And you don't have to be a "nut" to see all the privacy issues in the news almost daily. And with companies like Google, Face Book, etc that are avowed data thieves, er, collectors, I think it's wise to do what I can to try and keep my data more private.
I am a senior programmer for a large international company. We got into data mining way on the front end of the craze. But we never stooped to collecting the levels of personal identity level information most folks just accept these days. So I know how it works, and choose to limit what they can collect from me.
I'm sure you've heard of App Ops? (Assuming you're either on 4.3 or a custom 4.4 ROM that has it). OEM's like to hide it away, but it is still there and still very much usable. You can set which permissions an app can use (to a certain extent) and if it tries to access something you've turned the permission off for, the device returns an empty set (essentially "null") for that data.
Here's the link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.schurich.android.tools.appopsstarter
This app just calls the location where App Ops is in Android. Note that this app will *NOT* work in 4.4, since Google changed the way it's accessed.
edit: I've used this to disable a lot of what Facebook can access, among other apps.
Thanks! Looks like a great app. Runs great on my 4.3 S4.

Got the s5 today, few questions

I like the phone, but the 16gb causes a lot of concern. After downloading my music from Amazon, it's almost gone.
I can't find an option to put music from Amazon on my sd card, is that hte new kit kat "feature"?
Also, the test message preview on my lock screen only says "New Message", ther eused to be an option that gave me a preview of the actual message..is it gone?
On the Note 3, it had a setting where screenshots would enter auto edit mode, came in real handy for me. S5 doesn't seem to have this?
When I disabled my magazine, my home screen transitions isn't continuous ..I know I seen the s5 do this in review videos.
Did you root your phone yet with Towelroot? If so go to play store https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nextapp.sdfix and install this to get read/write to your sd card. The other stuff I can't help you with. Sorry.

Not yet. I will this weekend tho. Thanks bud
Before you root you may want to look into fix for SHealth and ISIS Wallet (if you use it). You have to stop SHealth and Health Services in app manager and clear data and cache before you installed Xposed. You may even have to uninstall their updates if I remember as well.
Install xposed and it's service , then update Shealth and it should work fine. Once you get that done install ISIS Root Bypass 3.0 module for xposed and check it in modules and reboot and the Wallet will work fine after that.
These were two things that I use often and really had to get working to be happy with root.

Why put off until tomorrow, what you could do today, and prevent yourself from being screwed by VZW when they push 4.4.3 soon, and Root may not work with it?
In the text messaging app you'll see a setting to display the message on the lockscreen instead of new message.
Plug your phone into the computer and drag and drop the music to the SD or use root explorer to move it there.. You don't need root to do this.
No, the S5 cannot auto enter edit mode as far as I know, maybe clear defaults of gallery and set images to auto open in an editor?
As far as continuous transitions just use apex or Nova.

You'll have to edit a file using Root Explorer then if you disable My Magazine you'll have endless home screen scrolling. I use Nova launcher which already has the option in settings. If you definitely have to have the stock launcher and you can't get infinite scrolling to work let me know I'll tell you which file to edit.
