Assistance Setting up Private Internet Access VPN on Shield Android TV - Shield Android TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello Gent and Lady SATV Enthusiasts,
I need a little assistance setting up a VPN on my beloved SATV. Searching through various forums, I understand that a number of users have had success using either OpenVPN for Android or Open VPN Client "Free" installed via sideloading.
I would like to get either up and running if possible with the VPN service Pirvate Internet Access. When using OpenVPN the program, I am able to create a new profile and select username/password authentication. However, when I attempt to "select" my CA Certificate, I get an error pop-up that says, "You don't have an app that can do this." A bit curious, as I thought that OpenVPN for Android would be able to do it itself. For those of you who were able to select your CA Certificate, did you have some other program also installed on your SATV? Or was there another trick to it?
As for OpenVPN Client "Free" I was able to complete the setup. However, when connecting, it would briefly connect, then go through a loop of reconnecting, authenticating, reconnecting, authenticating, etc.
If anyone can offer some help on the matter, I would be greatly obliged. Thank you!

For the openvpn client free, are you using Ethernet by chance? It will continually connect and reconnect if you do. It only works right on Wi-Fi, I think the app was built assuming there would be no wired connection.
With openvpn for Android, I haven't used it, but someone else said they used es file explorer to select the cert and selected the app to open with.

OpenVPN (WM6) connects but anyhow doesn't work...

Hi,
I have a HP Ipaq 210 series PDA with WM6 and trying to get OpenVPN to work for allowing me to connect the our university network.
After presenting my user data, OpenVPN says "connected" and displays the green symbol. Nevertheless my browsers (PIE, Opera Mobile) or any other internet app is able to "go outside".
Do I have to tell Windows or the browser to use the VPN-tunnel anyhow? I just don't know how to proceed.
Any information that could help me?
Kind regards,
roke
Can somebody please at least indicate how the configuration in the windows connection manager should be? ISP/work and so on? network device should connect to work/ISP? Configuration of OpenVPN: Use connection manager? On which network? Exclusive? ...
I just don't know what else I can do. The admins responsible for the VPN are bloody amateurs and don't know anything about windows mobile...
Help me please...
Regards,
roke
I have not tried openvpn on the ppc, but i run some openvpn connections for my company.
The openvpn server is configured to push the various parameters to the client, essentially that is the ip address ranges which should pass through the vpn and any DNS servers. (Excepted for bridged mode, where the ipaddress will be in the same subnet as the main site.)
From the Openvpn web site :"By default, when an OpenVPN client is active, only network traffic to and from the OpenVPN server site will pass over the VPN. General web browsing, for example, will be accomplished with direct connections that bypass the VPN." Why would you want it any other way?
What is it that is not working?
Can you access the sites and resources with the openvpn connection?
Can you access the sites on the openvpn server side by ipaddress?

problem with vpn, strange behaviour, xperia

Hi there!
I'm using a xperia X1 with the latest firmware version installed which SE released.
I also use spb mobileshell 3.0 ; active sync via exchange(over SSL, not VPN); palringo; Xperiatweak; TaskFacade; G-Alarm; Skype;WM6 Remote Desktop;.net vnc viewer;
My provider is o2 and I live in germany.
I'd like to use a pptp vpn connection to get connection to several services in my network. I already used it with my xda-mini-s and my orbit2, never had serious problems. Sometimes it took a few soft-resets until i got it working... but now...
I set up my connection as I always did,
@preferences->connections->add vpn-server ;
after adding the server i specified a couple of exeptions for my network-> reboot. -done-
But this time it won't connect automatically, it doesn't react when i type in a ip/name which is defined in the exeptions. (usually it is attempting to connect to my vpn server...)
I can navigate to the preferences->connections-> edit vpn-server and connect manually. It establishes a connection successfully and i can use e.g. rdp.
PLEASE HELP!
I can't figure out why its not connecting automatically.
I entered the exeptions like I always did.
(e.g. 192.168.14.200 or domaincontroller.domain.local -> a wildcard is added automatically to the entrys -> listed like this: 192.168.14.200/*)
I would be very happy if anybody could help!
Best regards, and have a nice day.

found out something new
Hi there!
Today I found out something new. IT DOES AUTOMATICALLY CONNECT, FOR SOME PROGRAMS...
It's just a question which Software I use.
For example, I always used rdp over vpn.
So I tested if its opening the tunnel if i try to connect to one of my desktops via remotedesktop, and its not.
(on the "old" phone, rdp was included from stock, on xperia i had to install it)
I tested connecting over a java irc app, which is also not working.
If I use e.g. Opera to connect to a website (e.g. owa) over a local ip, its successfully establishing the connection and i could log in.
DAMN!
I need it to work with, rdp, vnc and irc!
Shouldn't the phone recognize that I try to connect to a url/ip wich is located in my LAN whatever wich software is used?
PLEASE HELP
Have a nice sunday.

Win**** -- Did you ever find a solution/explanation for this?
I used to use a vpn for activesync, and activesync always automatically invoked the vpn connection...so I took that for granted...but today I've been using the WM6 Remote Desktop client, and like you, I can't believe that the recognition of url "exceptions" is useless for this app.
BTW, I would have been happy if I could just create a convenient shortcut to start the connection manually, but I've been all up and down the Web, and apparently there's no way to do that, either. mad, indeed.
i have a similar issue, my phone connets and after 20 secs it drops the VPN

[Q] [REQ] OpenVpn full solution for SGS2

Hi all,
I have been tinkering with connectivity into my corporate network and so far been able to get a connection to our Office Communicator server via ASProxy and a secure wireless connection. However I am looking for a solution that works across my 3G connection via a VPN.
I have looked at the market place versions of OpenVpn and I cannot get it to work with our Cisco Gateway. I got stuck at the tun and adb part, so not sure what I need to do at this point so though I would ask the experts on here ;-) There has been much work on a very important missing part which was a user authentication proxy, so the next bit for me would be a means of connecting to an IPSec/UDP Cisco VPN Gateway that works with my Domain username and then a fob generated password.
Any help from you guys would be most appreciated and perhaps I can share my ASProxy configuration for anyone wishing to get their's working....
Thanks
Avalon
Hi,
you can't use an OpenVPN client to connect to a Cisco (IPsec) VPN server.
If you want to connect to an OpenVPN server then you can use OpenVPN Installer and OpenVPN Settings from the market.
If you want to connect to an IPsec server then use the built-in android VPN client or even some proprietary Cisco client from the market... (don't know about these as I only use OpenVPN)
Hi, thanks for the reply, however the built in VPN client will not work with our server. There is a Cisco anyconnect client that does connect, but we need a license for it which we dont currently have.
I will keep trying....

I have some dumb VPn questions, figured XDA maybe could help me...

Sorry but I don't have another resource to ask and I am always on XDA...
I am trying to connect from a home Windows 8 via RDC to a VPN at a Dr's office. I have all the info I need to connect but am not able to. The remote computer is requesting my login verification but none of my known logins are working.
I am probably incorrectly using the RDC client for the VPN purpose. I am using it with the outside IP and not using any VPN tunnel prior. Is this incorrect?
I have the IPSEC Grup Name and Password as well as VPN Shared Key and even an instruction that says: VPN CONNECTION FROM REMOTE, but no matter what I try I don't get connected.
I tried from my WP8 phone and was able to literally see the Windows Server 2008 logon screen but then was unable to login. Perhaps the username syntax is incorrect and I need to use a domain?
So can anyone offer me a bit of advice?
Do I need to use some sort of cisco software to connect to the cisco vpn before logging on with the RDC?
Remote Desktop is not a VPN protocol. If you want to connect to a server that is only visible on a VPN (i.e. not available to the Internet at large, which is quite common), you'll need to first connect to the VPN (which is basically an encrypted "LAN" connection that goes over the Internet) and then you'll be able to use RDP to that server.
Depending on the type of VPN, you may need to download and install the VPN software on your PC first, or you may be able to use Windows' built-in VPN client. To do the latter, these are the steps on Win8:
1. Open the "Network and Sharing Center" (can be done from Start search or by right-clicking the network icon in the system tray on the desktop).
2. Click "Set up a Connection or Network".
3. Select "Connect to a workplace" and hit Next.
4. Click "Use my Internet connection (VPN)".
5. Enter the name of the VPN server where it says "Internet address" (there are some examples), and give it a name (like "Doctor's office VPN").
6. If you have a Smart Card (unlikely but possible) then select the checkbox for that. If you're on a shared computer, you might want to uncheck "Remember my credentials".
7. Once the options you want are selected, hit Create.
8. The connection will appear in the Networks list (click the Network icon on the desktop, or use Settings charm -> network button).
9. Click it and choose Connect.
10. Type in your user name for the VPN (you may need to specify a domain, such as DRDOMAIN\username).
11. Type in your password for the VPN, and hit OK.
12. Once it says you're connected, you should be able to access resources on the VPN (such as the Remote Desktop server).
EDIT: I just saw that you mention it's a Cisco VPN. Yes, you'll need Cisco's VPN software (the above steps will probably not work). You should ask the office how to get a copy of it and how to use it.

[Q] Sideloading OpenVPN - can't add certificate or import a configuration

I am a PIA (Private Internet Access) subscriber and I'm trying to configure OpenVPN for Android on my Nexus Player. I had no problems configuring it on my Nexus 5 but when I open the app on the player and go through creating a profile, when I try to click the button to "select" a certificate OR if I try to import an OpenVPN configuration I get a brief message from android that it doesn't have an app to do that.
My guess is that something is lacking on my device - particularly the "open from" dialog that appears when you're trying to add/select a file from your sdcard or cloud drive.
Has anyone else seen this and have a solution? I'm so close to getting this nailed down and I don't want to use the PIA app since I can't access my local network resources when it's connected.

**no root required, im on 5.1.1**
I got it working but it doesnt rotate but it works and all you need to do is input your info and hit connect.
Here is a VPN client that PIA made for there servers:
HTML:
http://download.apks.org/?server=11&apkid=com.privateinternetaccess.android&ver=1.1.7
install that like this:
adb install /path/to/com.privateinternetaccess.android&ver=1.1.7
Open up SideLoad Launcher and Launch VPN, fill out your info and tick save and hit connect. I confirmed working with Chrome at whatsmyip
Cheers,
DFL
Unfortunately it's not working on mine. When I click on "connect" I get a system dialog asking me if I want to enable VPN access - whatever you push after it doesent connet to the VPN.
Has anyone gotten this working 'better'? I've talked with PIA support and asked them why their app is considered "incompatible" and to please change that status in Google Play if there is indeed no issue. DroidVPN, VyperVPN, etc are in there so it's obviously possible I assume
