Device got restored automatically and app data gone - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Early morning when I woke up, I saw the language option coming on the home screen. I thought I got an upgrade to Android M automatically, so, I moved on with the all the process of setting up the device. Later on, there came an option to keep all the 81 apps and it's data, so, I choose 'Yes'. It was shocking to see that it was no upgrade but a reset was automatically initiated. Though all the apps are being downloaded and installed but the app data is gone which was more than important to me. I was using an app called Expense Manager (play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=at.markushi.expensemanager) and I really want the data back. Please help me out with this and yes, my device is not rooted. Android version is 5.1.1

I'm afraid you most likely can not recover that data.

No most likely about it. OP is SOL. Data cannot be recovered in this situation by ANY means.
If something is valuable to you on your tablet TAKE BACKUPS FREQUENTLY.

it could have been anything. the cheap flash memory is getting old in these devices. people are having their flash literally fail to unreadable at this point. it could have even been a goddamn cosmic ray hit that triggered it. no way to tell at this point.

[Q] Nandroid Fail!

Hello
I wanted to backup so i ran the backup with ROM Manager and it froze when it was backing up .android secure. I had to pull out the battery so I don't think it was completed has this happened to anyone?

You kidding me? If this isn't the place for it then where would he post it? Certainly not in the development section.
Sometimes backups get corrupt man, that sucks.. you'll probably just have to start anew

How about the forum called "Nexus One Q&A"?
As fun as it is to "act-a-mod", you both need to stop.
ANYWAYS, OP: If at first you don't succeed, try try again. If it fails again, try flashing a different recovery.
Yeah, just try backing up again. It has happened to me before. Stuck backing up at .android_secure. So I just tried to backup again, then it worked.
if you all want a recovery on which you can trust, then switch to Amon_Ra's recovery (RA-nexus-v1.7.0.1)
i keep having a similar problem. my backups can be created just fine. but when i try to restore them they ALWAYS hang at a certain file, such as event_1626573434.txt or whatever it may happen to be. sometimes i can go to advanced nand and restore each portion individually, which sometimes works. so the backup itself works. i really dont know what the problem could be. using clockwork recovery.

Nope. I'm not sure what I pressed, but I think trackball + power button. And then the phone restarted. Didn't need to pull the battery.

[Q] Rooted Vibrant + T-Mobile Update = Brick?

You could try making a Nandroid and then restoring only the data portion.
It all depends on what the OTA update did to your phone.
Well I'm stuck on the Vibrant Logo screen. Can you tell me how to do that? just restore the data portion?

I had the same problem. I had OCLF on my phone and I had un-lag-fixed and unrooted with it in anticipation of the JI6 update. When I ran the OTA, it bricked my phone anyway. I had to use Odin to get back to stock and that sounds like what you need to do too.
When I Odin'd back to stock, I still had all my videos, photos, and a bunch of files and stuff for apps, but I still needed to reinstall all the apps and redo all the settings/configurations.
oh man cause I used AK Notepad and basically my life is on that. Will those be erased too? and texts?

Odin from stock wipes out the existing applications (and replaces all the bloatware too), so they needed to be reinstalled. Once reinstalled from Market, and reinstalling Titanium Backup, I was able to restore from the /sdcard the backups I had made previously.
There was some work involved with getting the system back to what I had, but I didn't lose any data.

I'm back to stock and it didn't erase any if my pictures, music, files, etc. but since I received the update already back when I was rooted, does that mean I won't be getting the update at all anymore? Or do I have to wait again for another roll-out?

Are you guys just really impatient or something with the update. Mine stayed on the Vibrant screen for a while, but I just let it go and it worked out just fine. Mine was rooted and with the Ryan Lag fix.
I guess there is always the possibility that individual experiences can differ.

[Q] Deleted Bloatware.... I thought

First post on XDA so might as well be a noob mistake and cry for help. :crying:
So after rooting my GS4 I went through on Titanium Backup and deleted all the AT&T apps. Was careful not to delete anything that was related to Samsung. Shortly after went to use S Voice and now S Voice crashes saying "Unfortunately, S Voice has stopped".
I remembered deleting an app by the name of "attupdate..." and now when I go into settings to About device > Software update nothing happens when I click on that.
I made no back ups and can't find any option in Titanium to restore the file. Not sure what to do at this point.

I believe you are out of luck until we get a usable stock image. Unless someone can backup that particular app and send it to you for restore. I am not totally sure.

From what I have found online they havent released the firmware for the I337 GS4 yet only the I9500. I have it plugged into my computer and Kies sees it but doesnt let me do anything the firmware. It says "Your device's current firmware version is not supported to update firmware via Kies".
In recovery mode I get an error when I try to clear the cache partition. Though it does let me do the factory reset. When first booting after a factory reset I get an error saying Text-to-speech as stopped. Then after I name the device and check which options I want on it comes back saying Settings has stopped and kicks me back to naming the device. I have tried turning off all options (S Beam, etc.) and still the same.
Had I not done the factory reset I would still have a working device just without S Voice. Freezing vs uninstalling is for sure the better way to go about things, I just got ahead of myself. Now I have a cutting edge desk ornament until I can find a fix.

Yes that is exactly the idea......hope this helps.........
Sorry skimmed past our first question , you can freeze them by applying root , then installing an app called titanium back up from the market , I use the paid version , Pro. You can also disable apps without root by going to application manager ,all , then disable what apps you want to freeze , do a couple at a time and make sure apps you disable don't disrupt your phone then a few more and so on and so on..........

What he said.... but if you don't know what you're doing with this, chances are you SHOULDN'T be doing them! Just follow those steps and you shouldn't screw anything up, but if you get stuck, ask for help on the forum please and not in PM to just one person BEFORE going through with the step you are unsure of! We all weren't born with this knowledge and we're glad to help, but it doesn't help when you go and screw with stuff you shouldn't be just because the opportunity is there - if you don't know what you're doing, don't do it!
For those who don't know...You can also go to settings, more, application manager, all, touch the app you want to "freeze" and touch disable at top right...without root.

Huge Android OS data usage

TBH, this isn't normal no matter what the situation. I would wipe caches and then factory default if that doesn't work. Android OS shouldn't use more than like 10 or 20 MB per week, hardly GB's of data. Unless you have an unlimited data plan I would do it quickly.

Well, I did both o those things yesterday. This is my data usage from 7 am to 5 pm today. Standard, nothing has changed :/
Root is using data? Should not occur, at least not in any significant amount... My best guess is you are infected with some kind of malware, possibly at the system level.
At this point I would wipe everything and reflash your rom or restore from a good TWRP backup.
What rom are you on and what root apps, like Xposed, do you have installed?

Sorry to ask again, I just want to clarify... you bought the phone new, allowed it to update via OTA, never unlocked the bootloader (and you can verify it has never been unlocked), never rooted, and never installed a custom ROM... You are completely stock and you did a full factory reset where you lost all your data and apps and had to start clean yesterday, and didn't install any apps (prior to testing for excessive data usage).
And you are still getting high data usage from an app called root?
I'm sorry to question you, but something is very wrong here, the behaviour sounds a lot like a virus or malware of somekind but since you have a locked bootloader, and took OTA's (meaning /system is clean), and did a factory reset that is highly unlikely. That leaves a pure software or modem firmware error or corruption, maybe, I'm guessing now...
Have you contacted Moto support or tried posting in Moto Support Forums yet?

It's an option that is part of Google in Lollipop and newer devices when you go through the initial setup wizard... you selected a device to restore data and apps from (it defaults to the most recent), and there is a spot you can tap to open a menu to select which apps (or all or none) to restore.
My point is, if your restoring apps there could be a malware or misbehaved app "hiding" in there, you need to verify it with no apps... or skip entering your Google account entirely. To disable FRP you will need to delete your Google account from the device prior to doing a factory reset.
well, its wierd because I have noticed this huge "root" data usage right after I bought the phone and I had back then only some basic apps from google so they should be safe...is there an app that could scan the phone for malwere or viruses?

The only other thing I would do is factory default, and do not setup Google account and test as it came out of the box... is the data usage still there? If so, it's not something you can do anything about and you should contact Moto. If it is gone, it's an app that is either purposely, or is misbehaving, that it doing it. Finding the culprit without root will be problematic at best, but if you root then your warranty is void.

I got a new Android phone recently and had planned to port all my app backups from the N9005.
As things happen, I ran the Samsung app for backup and did a factory reset before checking the same.
The backup made a fool out of me, nearly all the crucial stuff is missing.
So now I need to recover the settings from the post "factory reset" Note 3.
What would be the fastest and least painful way to-
a. Root the SM9005;
b. Recover the backup (XML files for tasker, Aquamail, Biz Calendar and so on);
c. Unroot the app and be done with it.
I need to unroot as the last step as I plan to have the phone loaded with a kid friendly UI and keep it for the kids for long trips. Do not want anything wary taking over it.
Any suggestions and help is welcome!
Thanks,
CKhurana

Yeah, I know. But a recovery is possible AFAIK until the free space is overwritten? Just like any disk based data recovery happens?
Can you help me with options on the root?
Thanks,
Chetan
Well the simplest one without hassle is either flashing recovery IMG and rooting via SuperSU.
