Hey,
I've noticed many universals, whose face plates (the one on the outside, which is the metal plate) have got dented over time. Coincidentally, it gets dented right below the speaker holes running horizontally (along the width of the device). I have been using my device with utmost care, and i really dont see how this could have happened :-(
A couple of my friends who have Jasjars have their metal plates dented too...wondering if its some screwed up manufacturing issue which causes this...
Do any of you seem to be having the same problem??
I wonder if this could be the weak point, hence causing the display to crack too..

I have a small, almost unnoticable dent about midway down the hinge on that plate. Then again, my brother did yank my jajsar off a bookshelf that was about 7 feet up... but still, I have no idea how it got there. My aluminum case seems to have stopped any further scratch/denting, however.
Possibly when you place the Universal in your trouser's pocket with the metal side facing outside it may inadvertently get bumped around with furniture and other things around the office or home room.
As soon as I got my Jasjar about 6 months back I realized that this hitting around may cause the metal plate to dent. I therefore developed the habit of always placing my Jasjar in my trouser pockets with the metal plate facing towards the leg. To date I do not see a single dent on the face plate.

Someone I know with a JJ had hus screen crack because he kept his JJ in his trouser pocket - so be aware
I never put it in any of my pockets. Never did that with any of my previous PDAs, with the exception of the very first Palm III I had. What a BIG mistake that was, somehow the screen took a nice crack along its’ face.
Morale of the story, never put a PDA in any pocket, always carry it in hand.
I found that walking into some scaffolding on site at work creates a dent in the case.
Moral of the story dont walk into things and you wont dent it.
Aluminium case for work now.
Anything will dent, crack or break if you hit it hard enough.
Regardless of how carefull you think you are being you will always get scuffs, scratches etc.

its a dent at the same damn location on many devices i've seen so far.....

I think the point the OP is trying to make is that he HASN'T "hit it hard enough".
I've dents in mine also, and there's NO WAY I've hit it with anything. I don't walk into scaffolding for instance.

I didnt hit the scaffolding that hard and was surprised by how easily it did put a dent in it.
I made up an excuse to O2 about something not working and sent it back under warranty. Now I am extra carefull hence the Aluminium case for when I am out and about.
I am currently not using a screen protector and I've noticed my screen is a dust magnet. I get an substantial amount of dust latching on to my screen (if it was just a bit I wouldn't bother). Is there any liquid solution I can use to make the screen more dust resistant? I am currently using lens cleaner and disposable microfiber cloths to clean my screen. Anybody else getting the same issue?
I just ordered a SGP crystal clear screen protector because I noticed how popular they were on the forums... but it won't arrive for another week.

If by cave you mean the city of Toronto (yes I collect dust while walking around the city), then yeah I'd like to. But all the mayoral candidates are crap and our politicians are corrupt as hell. Cleaning ain't gonna happen. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Go to settings
then click display
then scroll down
turn 'dust collector' off
that should do the trick!
This is my first time running into snarky people on xda, everybody else has been nothing short of helpful.
I'm noticing my phone screen is collecting more dust than all my other gadgets; I'm just wondering if anybody has had a similar issue.

Now that I think of it, I have never seen dust on the screen of my SGS, even though I live in a relatively polluted city. I guess it just gets wiped off by my fingers while, you know, I'm actually using the phone.

Thanks for letting me know.
Since I've got the phone I've been cleaning my screen with a camera lens cleaner solution. I'm just concerned I may have wiped off a coating off the glass, or the solution itself made the surface more adhesive. I'm sure it won't be a problem once the SGP protector arrives.
I know nothing about the hardware so please correct me... The screen is capacitive thus using electricity to detect touch. If for some reason the shielding is broken i can imagine it is a little bit static thus attracting dust. It could well be that my assessment is bs.

My guess is that you have rubbed off our dissolved some sort of coating. I've had mine here in Vancouver (so the same Bell model, probably) for a couple of months and have never noticed anything I'd describe as dust, maybe some good old sweat and grease.
If you don't mind my asking, why were you cleaning the screen in the first place? Why use any sort of cleaning liquid if you're gonna clean it at all? Wouldn't the microfiber cloth, or kimtech wipes be enough? But again, why do it at all?

Recent study reveals germs and bacteria make your phone more dirty then a toilet seat.
I don't need a study to tell me that, the toilet seat is one of the cleanest parts of your house.
Still, you don't see people washing their money, their keyboard, or their dish sponge obsessively...

I guess you could try brasso gadget clean or something. I have never tried it but its meant to be anti static. Hope that helps.
Personaly i clean my phone weekly not for the germs but to remove crusts. I use lcd screen cleaner btw. But if you'll ever have to take care of a baby you will quickly get into the habit of cleaning everything.
this is now getting way off topic, as I'm sure the baby isn't playing with the i9000
but to keep that train of thought going, first time parents do tend to clean everything thoroughly (and hourly), but by the time you have your second or third you realize there's really no need to scrub everything with antibacterial sprays...
anyway, I'm curios whether someone knows if a capacitive touchscreen, gorilla skin, or the SGS's implementation of both has some kind of coating that's vulnerable to being taken off with lense cleaning fluids
http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/08/brasso-gadget-care-polish-review/ that's the brasso stuff. I have been using the sgp ultra clear. Its pretty decent thought nothing will beat the bare screen. And I have noticed it is slightly less responsive. Before with use the slightest touch it would register my finger. Now it seems like I need to apply abit more pressure.
Also when applying the screen protector be VERY careful. I wasted the first one because of dust getting underneath. very annoying so be careful and do it somewhere dust free and as quickly as possible.
Although I wash my face with biotherm homme exfoliating face wash twice a day, I don't have the best skin in the world. I tend to accumulate oils as the day progresses and my phone tends to share a bit of it. With that said, it was necessary for me to clean the phone every so often. The reason I used lens cleaner was because it was readily available and I figured if it was gentle enough for a camera lens, it should be more than apt for glass.
I'm just speculating there may be an anti static layer I've cleaned off. I wouldn't be surprised if there was (I mean they do sell anti static sprays). Atm, I'm just waiting for my SGP Ultra Crystal screen protector.
In the worst case I'll also try Brasso and/or an anti-static spray.
As for applying the protector, I think I'm going to use the steamy washroom method.

I now have the same problem on my new Pixel 7 Pro I bought like a month ago. It's screen is dusty whenever I get it out of the pocket no matter what pants.
Searched everywhere and can't find anything useful. My first guess is some kind of static electricity. I've tried:
• other phones
• anti-static screen cleaner
• letting the battery die and keep it uncharged for like half a day.
• a bunch of different jeans/pants
• even tried vaccum cleaning my pockets and trying to pick up anything that's impossible to see with human eye by a lint roller and duct tape.
Putting on a screen protector film or tempered glass would be my last resort.
After 30 minutes in pocket it looks like this. It's really embarrassing when I have to get it out in front of other people. Also attaching a photo of my pocket so you don't think they are messy or something. Other phones do not have this problem in the same pocket
Hi guys, I've owned an Xperia Play since July 2011, since then I've had some 'Battery Cover' issues. First, let's start off by talking about the battery cover itself, well actually there's not much to say. If you have an Xperia Play you already know the battery cover is very cheap, it's a large rectangular piece of plastic that covers the entire back on the phone, it's a pain to get it off and on at times. So not only it is cheaply made, it also has the tendency to start 'squeaking' or 'creaking' after a while. This simple issue can be fixed my ordering a new back piece to replace the old one, but note, if you swap batteries, swap SIM cards, swap SD cards, or anything that involves taking the battery cover off, it WILL, at some point in time, get worn out and slightly bent out of place. There's no escaping this problem due to it's design. In the past I've ordered about 3 Black battery cover replacements, and each one of them, after sometime, became creaky. Now maybe I'm just being picky but I REALLY hate picking up my phone and hearing that *squeaky* sound. It annoys the piss out of me. So I've came up with a way to prevent / fix this. What I'm about to guide you through is EXTREMELY simple and shouldn't cost you more than $2... ENJOY
SUPPLIES: Electrical Tape & Scissors
(1) Hold your phone to where the back is facing you, gently but firmly press all around until you've found your squeaky area. ( take a mental note of where this spot is )
(2) Remove the battery cover.
(3) Cut off a piece or two of electrical tape according to the size of the squeaky area, place the electrical tape on the inside of the battery cover where you took a mental note of.
(4) Put the battery cover back on! You're all done! No more squeaking!
It worked for me, it should definitely work for you! Try it out and post your results! Don't forget to *Thank* me!
(I've included a picture of what the results look like, lol I'm sure we all know what a piece of tape looks like on a piece of plastic but yeah here's one in case you don't!)

I've replaced the battery lid a few times but I've never had the creaking problem. I wonder if it has something to do with the CDMA version not having the space for the SIM card.
Anyway, I do agree that they are poorly made. My first one developed cracks around the pry point and around the top even before I got a second battery. Obviously, battery swapping means I open it more often than most users, but I was EXTREMELY careful. Eventually I lost the corner next to the power button. On my replacement I made sure to never use the pry point without relieving pressure by pulling the corners too (usually unclipping them first). I also used a stick-on carbon-fiber protector from the day I installed it till the day I replaced it. It eventually formed a crack by the pry point too. Argh!
Ive had my nexus 4, for about a 1week. I'm very careful with my phones. Had the iPhone since the 3G-till the 4S switched back and forth beetween android. Having the G1 and the G2 then G2x and the GS3 now I have the nexus 4. Never having problem with a cracked screen on ANY PHONE. After a long shift at work 12hrs at a (Nissan dealership) I take my phone out of my pocket and the back is cracked?!?! Not once did I drop it or bump it in my jacket. So my only conclusion is that the phone is very sensitive and maybe with the slight pressure with crack? Anyone have same problem or info? Currently waiting for Google to send me my replacement. Hopefully I'm under warrnty for the crack. (fingers crossed)

You must have bumped it or bent it. Glass doesn't crack by itself. Otherwise there would be tons of these posts on here.
That being said the back glass does look pretty thin, so a hit in the right (wrong) place could do the damage maybe. I dunno. Mine is caseless and it's still perfect.

Not sure if it was in that thread or another but I saw a user say they had it on their desk, heard small popping/crackle noise, and the back of his N4 spider webbed from the bottom corner, which would support the idea of the temp changes causing it.

Because of its size it seems easy to angle it in a way where it can get flexed. I experience this using my.phone in my pockets often.
Two weeks of your time and $64 + shipping there is what it cost me. Google will not cover damage as a warranty claim and LG won't quote a price to repair. Good luck

These phones can't really be kept in a trouser (pant) pocket without some potential problems. I think the main issue is when you go to sit down, your pocket bends into a right angle, and your phone wants to follow that shape. Being a fairly large phone it can't get find a space in your pocket where it isn't under some forces trying to bend it.
Eventually your phone starts to bend slightly, this at best may just cause the glass back to pull away from the back adhesive, at worse it bends enough to break the glass. It seems a similar issues were the cause of Wi-Fi antennas disconnecting internally on the HTC One X.
These type of devices are not called "pocket phones", they are called "smart phones" and don't respond well when stuffed into a trouser pocket.

My nexus 4 cracked as well. Had it inside a warm gym changing room then put it in my coat pocket ,which btw is big enough and located so that it wont bend the phone at all. I then went outside (imin the uk where it is snowing hence cold) then pulled it out and it had got a crack on it. Not happy to say the least, and no its not covered by lg warrenty.

Anyone else have very faint surface scratches on the back of their phone? No idea how I got them on this supposedly sturdy phone, but they are there. The phone has been on microfiber resting at all times.
My question is this, anyone think we can polish the back to get light scratches out?

I have this same thing going on, day 3 with the device. They're not that noticable but I know they're there and that's what bugs me. Somewhere I read said it could be scratches in oleophobic coating... IDK. JerryRigEverythings scratch test didn't show any markings until around 8 on the hardness scale.

Yea I saw the video. That's what has me annoyed. Essentials talk of durability is well documented. Add that to the fact that no cases are readily available means you kinda need to just put up with whatever happens. I'm wondering if we can just use a mild polish on the back to alleviate any minor scratches. Mine are almost invisible, but I their presence at all on a phone I baby, bothers me.
I think baking soda and water would do the trick.

I began to see fine scratches on the back of mine within days. I carry it in my front pocket with nothing else. I'm not aware of any rough treatment at all. I feel disappointed as well.
Same problem here ,another thing to be disappointed besides the Camera.

I was getting some as well. Try the polish out and see if it works? I don't think anyones tried it yet. Also if you don't mind covering the back you can always throw a skin on it. Also makes the phone a lot less slippery
I had quite a few on my first unit. My replacement unit I have none so far but I put a dbrand skin on it the minute I took it out of the box. My first one also had some scratches in the titanium near the charging port and a nick on the side that came from who knows what.

I also have fine scratches on the back of mine, with scratches near the USB c port. I also have a replacement supposedly on the way, but for freezing & random reboot issues. What did they replace your phone for? How long did it take for you to get the replacement?
Mine was for bad light bleed and the coating on the titanium coming off. Now I have to exchange again because the one they sent me has no speaker grille.
They sent the replacement next day air after they called to confirm. I had already sent my defective device in. This was before they started doing advanced replacement.

Maybe they could be polished out, but if it scratches this easily they are destined to return.
The phone is not supposed to be scratch proof. I'll be surprised if they'll take your phone back just because of slight scratched. Put it in a sleeve to install vinyl backing for peace of mind.
Mine had scratches from day one... lol Just placed my replacement order yesterday but I don't expect to get it anytime soon. Phone is off and collecting dust til I get the box to return it. They stated they wouldn't have any new devices (hopefully ones w/o much of the hardware issues like the speaker grille) in stock until this week when they emailed me last week.
I ended up getting a replacement from essential and placing a skin on the back to protect from getting these fine scratches. I don't hate it as much as I thought I would, I miss the shiny back but I like not having scratches and finger prints all over the back. Wahoo!

Had mine for over six weeks, and no scratches here.
I have a ton of scratches near the camera and magnet ports. No idea how they got there since I carry my phone in my pocket with nothing else in it. The only thing I could think of would be resting it on it's back on a table and sliding it to pick it up? Odd how it is only around the top part. Fingerprint sensor and below is spotless.

Close to that area are the magnets, magnets attract metal and sand, sand is one of the few things that can scratch glass and ceramic. Sometimes even if we believe or not we have sand in our packets due to daily life. Then we have scratches without knowing where we scratched.

I don't understand people complaining about micro scratches like it's something wrong with the phone? If you live in a place that has sand then you should have some type of protection on your device if you don't want scratches. Sand (silica) is harder than any coating and will scratch any phone. It also can become ubiquitous. One of the persons here literally has a user pic with them on the beach! Why make it Essentials fault when your failure to protect your phone is the issue?
I got my scratches at my corporate office in my cube. Nowhere near beach or anything of that sort. Was just playing with it and setting it up. Anyone who's not using any protection on the back and have been using it regularly saying they don't have any scratches, please share a close up video of your phone's back in nice HD detail close up so we can be in awe of your magical device with no scratches. Be sure to move it around under a bright light too. Lol. Be real people, you're gonna get scratches without a protection, whether it's a skin, case or whatever.
