How to make tmobile NOT see your tethering - Nexus 6 General

im on android 5.1, but this worked pre 5.1 as well. all i did was add this one line to my build.prop and tmobile does not see my wireless tethering.. add the line, save it, reboot for it to take affect. im also using the wifi tether router app for my tethering. but should work on the default option as well. i use tmobile, so cant say if it works with other providers.
net.tethering.noprovisioning=true

I use the tether_dun_required hack.

this way seems much easier to me

any ROOT file explorer should work, i use the Root Explorer app. i locate the build.prop in /system/build.prop/, long press on it, press open in text editor, it tells me that the current file system is read only, then asks if i want to remount as read-write, i press yes, i add that line to the bottom, press save, then i reboot for it to take affect.

Yeah, That's what usually happens with both PlayStation consoles. When you connect and do a "test connection" on Playstation3/4 both would connect but when "connecting" PSN you would get an error. Most like would be 30696-4 because I got that ALL the time. But then my brother just caved and added a 7-day data pass 1/GB data mobile hotspot and immediately it worked. I was trying with VPN's and various DNS's and nothing was working for me, unless I chose some bad VPN's. But anyways, my data should be resetting for the month and going back to 5GB in a few days. Hopefully by then something would come up, but if not... it's alright I guess. Someone will eventually figure it out.

You have the same problem I HAVE! If you ever find a answer please PM me on here.

Use root explorer and open build.prop as a text. Its in the system folder.
Change

Restart and your done.

Try deleting the build.prop.bak file it creates after you modify the build.prop file. See if that works. Oh yeah and click save and exit after you mod the file.

HOW To WiFi Tether Stock Rooted Moto X 4.2/4.4

Updated 10/15
This version allows users to successfully change the SSID and add a passphrase. Compliments to "Italianguy"
http://socal.hanhuy.com/~pfnguyen/wifi-tether-gnex-4.2.2.apk
Download WiFi Tether for Root Users.
Go into Settings and make the following changes.
change device profile to galaxy nexus (cdma/lte)
check box: wifi-driver reload
check box: enabled routing fix
That's it. Go back and push to start tethering.
Note: this is only valuable to users with unlimited DATA if you have a certain amount of DATA then watch your usage and you should also be able to use native (Verizon) tethering.
Cheers!

Device Profile : Generic ICS/JB (wlan0)
WiFi-Driver Reload : Check box
Keep Alive connection.
That's it. Go back and push to start tethering. It will show up but I can't figure out how to change the SSID (Name) of WiFi Network and set up a Passphrase (password) in settings. For now it shows up as wlan0 and you can connect to it. If anyone can figure out how to make a password please post it.

Some carriers block and also depends on what plan you have... Verizon share plan has anything over 4 gig share you get free hotspot.

I don't think that was what he was replying to. It obviously allows you to specifically grant access to the devices that should be getting it and not allow access to anyone that can see the SSID. Towards the bottom of the first post, it was asked if anyone knew how to create a password, to please post it. I'm pretty sure that is all he was responding to.
Prior to the Moto X, I had a Gnex, so I haven't used this app in quite some time, but when I did use it, the encryption was WEP and did funny things. Access control is just fine for me, and I'm not sure why anyone would care THAT much about SSID.
Its the SSID and the password that can't be changed. I could see why someone would want to have a password on their network. Mac address control is not very secure at all.
Sent from my XT1056 using Tapatalk 4
I followed the instructions but when I try to connect my ipad to my phone it tells me "unable to join the network". Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?
Played around with settings and this is what I did:
Device profile: Generic ICS/JB(wlan0)
Set up Method: Auto
Wifi driver reload AND wifi driver reload 2: checked
Enable access control: check
Keep alive connection: check
Make sure MSS clamping and Routing fix are both checked. Now it runs buttery smooth and speeds are great!
This is one of the only reasons I root, I don't do roms just strictly tethering. Hope this helps someone that was in my situation as well.

It's secure enough for this purpose. Yes, they can be spoofed, and yes MAC's can be sniffed out from simple packet watching, however, an attacker would need knowledge of this to even try it, as well as the hotspot would need to be up long enough to care.
I would definitely *prefer* the ability to change SSID and password, but I'm not losing sleep over it.

Temporary Root??

So, I know we are still a long way off from a real root solution, given the locked bootloader issue. However, would there be some way to get root at least until a reboot. I've got a couple of apps that I can't live without, and as I am about to get my S7 Edge, I am getting concerned.
Top of the list:
1. Titanium
2. Ad blocker
Use AdGuard, NetGuard or Block-This for ad blocking, works just as good. going without TiBu sucks though.

Not sure if it was a bad install, but I tried Block-This last night and it worked great, until I restarted my phone. I couldn't swipe left or right on home screen, and couldn't access app drawer. I had to uninstall it by pulling down from top and going into settings then app management. As soon as I uninstalled all was working again.

It's a virtual VPN. Your data doesn't go through anyour outside servers. It just let's you use a HOSTS file without root. Personally I use NetGuard. I had issues with Block this.

No good. Those values don't show up in shortcut master.
Anyone had any luck with this? I can't find the file that OMJ is talking about to save my life. I don't see any attachments.
I've tried editing my build.prop and I've tried editing the default xml to change the rules and enforcement to 0.
The latter DID let the hotspot start for me. Other devices can connect. But they never get network connectivity.
Can anyone help me confirm what I'm missing?
Fabio Grasso's WiFi Tether app works for me on the 10.

I can't get it to work on mine! I've achieved root, installed the app, matched all the settings up....no internet connection. It's strange, my Ipad can see the network and it says it's connected. As soon as I connect it though I lose internet connection on both devices, can't load a single web page. Did you have this issue at all or would you have any idea what would cause this? I'm at my wits end with it, and I've used this app for 2 years on my M8.

HAH. I couldn't get it to work with this app (not initially anyway). I turned to his site to check if there were settings already available to use for the HTC 10 because it couldn't auto-detect the wifi adapter name. On his site, it says HTC users need to uninstall "TetherGuard" - system app.
Did that, figured I'd reboot and try the built in tethering which now works beautifully. Got it still within my refund window for Wifi Tether Router.
So some combination of what I posted above plus UNINSTALL TETHERGUARD! And life's good now. Thanks much.

You can use Titanium Backup to uninstall TetherGuard since you're rooted, instead of just disabling it.
Anyone want to post the specific changes/tweaks they've done? I've done changes to build.prop and default.xml (using the various settings found all over XDA) and also disabled/removed TetherGuard, but I'm still stuck at hotspot enabling but no data connection for any connected devices (data still works for the phone while hotspot is on though).

Note 9 SE/UE Hotspot Mod...(Sprint)

I went outright and bought the unlocked, 8GB/512GB directly from Samsung (actually via Amazon and got the wireless duo charger and dex pad for free) and activated it on Sprint. I have been fooling around with the local as well as global APN settings. The global assignment of "tether_dun_apn" that worked on the SGS8+ (which I had and my daughter now has) did not work on the Note 9. Additionally, modifying the local APN to include "dun" in the APN type alone also did not work.
What I found that is now working (and unlike the SGS8+, you don't have to cycle mobile data) was to completely delete the "tether_dun_apn" key from the global settings. Also set the "tether_dun_required" to 0. After that, set the "APN2 LTE|EHRPD internet" APN type to "default, mms, supl, hipri, dun" in this order.
Once I did this, my hotspot will turn on every time with internet connection and has survived multiple reboots. Keep in mind that if you re-provision, at the very least, you will have to modify the local APN settings again. I haven't seen re-provisioning affect the global settings.
You can adjust the global and local settings from ADB shell via "settings put" command (or for the local APN, use something like QuickShortcutMaker as has been done in the past with the SGS8/9 and Note8).
Hope this works for you guys; it is working flawlessly for me now....and no root/custom ROM needed (never thought I would actually prefer to say that)...
Make sure you know what you are doing as changing the APNs (especially at the global level) can render your data connection moot...I would suggest "settings list global" from ADB Shell before any changes - copy that output and put it in a text file so you have something to refer to if needed. If you mess up the local APNs, you can re-provision and it will reset those to normal Sprint settings...
Z

Download QuickShortcutMaker from the play store.
Open it...
Follow screen shots attached in the below order:
1. Select normal search.
2. Enter "test" as your search term.
3. Select search.
4. Scroll to bottom where you see "com.test.LTEfubctionality" and click to drop down. Select the second "com.test.LTEfunctionality" entry.
5. In the resulting screen, select "Try".
6. In the resulting list, select "LTE APN Setting". Thus will bring up your local APN entries. The Sprint variant I have already modified only had one entry, "APN2 LTE|EHRPD internet", not all 4 like you see here for my unlocked version. Tap on this entry.
7. In the resulting list, scroll down and look for the "APN Type" entry. Tap on it to edit it. It should be "default, mms, supl, hipri, dun" in this order with no spaces between the values and commas.
8/9. Save the APN.
Restart your phone and it should work. You may have to cycle mobile data.
I may have put an extra screen shot in there twice...my bad...

Unknown. I don't know how Tmobile sets up their APNs or if they also utilize the global scope like the unlocked versions do.
You can follow the instructions I gave earlier in this thread to get to the local APNs, then take a screen shot and post it here. Just don't change anything at this point.
We can go from there...

So you can open the APN, but can't edit any of the values?

Correct. I'm thinking maybe I should do the software update.

I'm also on the old ED 450 plan. Do I need to have a tethering plan?

I don't think so. I have the MyWay everything plan and I have a friend who's hotspot I have hacked in the past that has the 1500 ED plan and it has worked for him on all of the phones I have hacked for him (S2 up to the Note9)...
You should be good...
