HOW To WiFi Tether Stock Rooted Moto X 4.2/4.4 - Moto X General

Updated 10/15
This version allows users to successfully change the SSID and add a passphrase. Compliments to "Italianguy"
http://socal.hanhuy.com/~pfnguyen/wifi-tether-gnex-4.2.2.apk
Download WiFi Tether for Root Users.
Go into Settings and make the following changes.
change device profile to galaxy nexus (cdma/lte)
check box: wifi-driver reload
check box: enabled routing fix
That's it. Go back and push to start tethering.
Note: this is only valuable to users with unlimited DATA if you have a certain amount of DATA then watch your usage and you should also be able to use native (Verizon) tethering.
Cheers!

Install from Download folder.
Go into Settings and make the following changes ONLY.
Device Profile : Generic ICS/JB (wlan0)
WiFi-Driver Reload : Check box
Keep Alive connection.
That's it. Go back and push to start tethering. It will show up but I can't figure out how to change the SSID (Name) of WiFi Network and set up a Passphrase (password) in settings. For now it shows up as wlan0 and you can connect to it. If anyone can figure out how to make a password please post it.

Some carriers block and also depends on what plan you have... Verizon share plan has anything over 4 gig share you get free hotspot.

Any Idea why downloads are slow but uploads are blazing fast? Full signal. Speedtest on the phone is smoking but on the tablet is .55 mbs dl.

I don't think that was what he was replying to. It obviously allows you to specifically grant access to the devices that should be getting it and not allow access to anyone that can see the SSID. Towards the bottom of the first post, it was asked if anyone knew how to create a password, to please post it. I'm pretty sure that is all he was responding to.
Prior to the Moto X, I had a Gnex, so I haven't used this app in quite some time, but when I did use it, the encryption was WEP and did funny things. Access control is just fine for me, and I'm not sure why anyone would care THAT much about SSID.

Its the SSID and the password that can't be changed. I could see why someone would want to have a password on their network. Mac address control is not very secure at all.

I followed the instructions but when I try to connect my ipad to my phone it tells me "unable to join the network". Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?
Played around with settings and this is what I did:
Device profile: Generic ICS/JB(wlan0)
Set up Method: Auto
Wifi driver reload AND wifi driver reload 2: checked
Enable access control: check
Keep alive connection: check
Make sure MSS clamping and Routing fix are both checked. Now it runs buttery smooth and speeds are great!
This is one of the only reasons I root, I don't do roms just strictly tethering. Hope this helps someone that was in my situation as well.

It's secure enough for this purpose. Yes, they can be spoofed, and yes MAC's can be sniffed out from simple packet watching, however, an attacker would need knowledge of this to even try it, as well as the hotspot would need to be up long enough to care.
I would definitely *prefer* the ability to change SSID and password, but I'm not losing sleep over it.

Internet tethering shortcut

I use Internet tethering on a daily basis. I've canceled my DSL because all I use is my phone now.
I've been trying to figure out a way to enable Internet tethering without having to do:
Menu -> settings -> wireless controls -> Internet tethering. A one click on and off button is what I need. I've looked everywhere for it. I can't be the only android user who needs or needed something like this. I'm starting to think I'm going to have to create something myself just for this purpose.
Just in case it matters my phone is rooted with the latest super d rom.

Easy solution...Just keep the 'internet tethering' box checked. The only time you'll have to uncheck it is when you mount your phone to your computer to transfer files.
yea i guess thats the only way thanks.

It's not working because you have to root the phone. You can use the Visionary app in the Market (thanks MoDaCo) to do a temp root, and then run tethering app. I haven't found the temp root to be damaging, but you're doing this at your own risk.

Anyone else had any luck with this? I can get it to run, start the network, see the SSID, etc. But I never get an IP address on my client device. Worked fine on my G2, but doesn't work on the myTouch 4G.

This thread is talking about apples and oranges.
I'd like to see the "official" froyo tether work. The Google code one will work with or without the tethering plan, as will PDANet and other apps.
Once we see the "hotspot" feature working, we can reverse the setting that enables it without T-Mo's permission.

BTW, where did you get this info? When I launch the built-in app, I see the SSID but dhcp doesn't seem to work. There's no agreement (like most other trial-ware junk like Tmo TV) - so what gives? If it's free, it certainly isn't working so far.

[Q] Kindle won't pickup adhoc wireless my phone will??

So I bought a cheap USB wireless adapter for my PC - D-Link DWA-125.
I set up an ad-hoc wireless connect, my SGS phone sees it but the Kindle won't.
Any ideas?
PS I'm in Australia if that makes any difference.
default android cannot connect to Ad-hoc.
if you want doing this, your fire must be rooted then you copy one file to your fire.
you can search in this forum for more infomation, I can remember where the file is.
If you are running Windows 7 use Connectify it creates a wireless hot spot and the lite version is free. connectify.me
It was advertised that the fire wouldn't support ad-hoc networks from the announcement. Conectify on win7 works pretty well though.

Well, I found a wpa_supplicant file on the forums here and copied to system/bin, but it doesn't work. Anyone have a working wpa_supplicant, or know what files I need to edit? This sounds like the most elegant solution, if not I'll try connectify as suggested.
After fsuking around for hours, still not working, and am too tired to do more.
I tried method from http://www.chinadigitalcomm.com/android-a81/a81e-connect-to-ad-hoc-wifi-t1413.html namely
Turn off wireless and then you need to edit two files, either text editor or ADB
adb pull /system/etc/wifi/tiwlan.ini tiwlan.ini
adb push tiwlan.ini /system/etc/wifi/tiwlan.ini
adb pull /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf wpa_supplicant.conf
adb push wpa_supplicant.conf /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf
for tiwlan.ini - look for the WiFiAdhoc line and change, add the other two lines after it
--------------
WiFiAdhoc = 1
dot11DesiredSSID = InsertyourSSIDhere
dot11DesiredBSSType = 0
for wpa_supplicant.conf - add the ap_scan=2 line and your adhoc network
-----------------------
ctrl_interface=DIR=/data/system/wpa_supplicant GROUP=wifi
update_config=1
ap_scan=2
network={
ssid="InsertyourSSIDhere"
key_mgmt=NONE
mode=1
wep_key0=1234567890
priority=20
}
- Reboot and turn on wireless - can take a while to connect
- this works on the Android 2.1 firmware, have not yet fully tested on 2.2.
- I think the priority line is important, make it bigger than other networks in wpa_supplicant.conf so it tries to connect to AdHoc first.
- When you add new networks through the Android settings menu, the ap_scan=2 line disappears so you have to re-add it

A lot of ways to setuo WiFi hotspot with laptop, but Bzeek is the most useful one and it supports both Win XP and Vista.
I met a problem with Bzeek as well as lots of guys met that after restart the Windows, Bzeek is alway Off instead of On, even you can't turn it On.

Install ZT-180 Adhoc Switcher.apk
Before running it you'd better ROOT your Kindle Fire for higher user ability.
Run ZT-180 Adhoc Switcher
You should see Switch to Infrastructure mode / Switch to Ad-hoc mode button.
Click Switch to Infrastructure mode and it turns to Switch to Ad-hoc mode then you can click Settings button to set SSID and WEP password if possible.
I put into Bzeek Free WiFi as SSID as I'm using Bzeek and WEP is not selected for Bzeek. If you use other name and with WEP, just do your way.
Now the button display Switch to Ad-hoc mode, just click it and turn it to
Ad-hoc Mode, click Enable WiFi button and it will connect to Bzeek Free WiFi rapidly
Then it will ask you put in your Bzeek username and password, finally you can share the internet with WiFi Ad-Hoc from your laptop happily!
I post this method to a Chinese forum and you can check screenshot images and download links there better.

I wonder who edited that for me? Also, what is a google?
I concur with borborpa. I would think the problem is that the kindle fire will only connect to a normal network as opposed to ad-hoc, which is how most phones tether their connection. The only way then to tether your kindle fire to your phone would be to get a phone whose wireless chipset supports emulating a real router.

PIA VPN working on Fire Stick with Alexa

Not sure if anyone knew but PIA (Private Internet Access) does work on the Fire Stick with Alexa running 5.2.4.0 (I'm not sure if it works on 5.2.2.0). I will say it runs slower then running it through my router by half. Now to get this puppy rooted P.S. I give up on trying to upload pics.
To be more precise you are saying that the PIA Android app works fine on a FireTV Stick 2. Which is to be expected since the FTVS2's hardware is close to being as powerful as a FireTV 1 Box.
It's good to have confirmation. :good:

You don't, you just need to connect to the Wifi that already has the VPN working. The PIA Android App is only for those that want to run a VPN on a per device bases or if you can not run the VPN thru our router or secondary router. A router run VPN is always recommend due to specs. But being able to run it a FireTV device itself is a good second choice.

Some are able to run a Wifi signal as a repeater on a laptop or desktop. But running the app on the device itself is much less complicated.
Are you running PIA on a FTVS1 or FTVS2. Spec wise I would only recommend running it on a FTV1, FTV2 or FTVS2 but I bet it runs ok on a FTVS1 although those are way slow. Guess having only used FTV1's for myself & programed FTVS1's for my F&F's have giving me a slow experience with FTVS1's. Messed with a couple of FVTS2's recently. And I still would prefer my FTV1's speed & controller wise. I hope the GUI update for FTV1's gets release soon.
I have the 2nd gen. FTVS2 amd Kodi Krypton 17. I've seen some saying PIA doesn't work well on 1st gen, saying it is on, but doesn't change the IP. IP Vanish is said to work good with gen 1. Is it fast? because I've tried free app versions of VPN and whenever I try to watch or download something it's to slow
I use NordVPN as well. Speeds are usually very good. Only faster one I've used is IPVanish, but it's based in the US and doesn't have access to things like Netflix. But speed for that one are off the charts if you just want a VPN service that's rapid.
I been using TorGuard for almost 2years now and it works great even speeds for me when I am on 4G LTE so I don't complain.
I even set up my OnePlus 6T to block connections without VPN because I do not want it online without being connected to a vpn.
I've used Adguard for years, never had a problem.
