[Video] Photography Tutorial - Xperia Z3 General

Is anyone interested in a video tutorial for photography?
I made one with my Z1, intended for any modern Sony smartphone
In another post I explained that I'm going to make a part 2 and part 3 about post-processing and composition since that's what people were interested in (with the Xperia Z1 at least). If there's anything else you'd like to see me do a video of (related to photography okay... :T ), I'd love to hear!
[for those interested, here's my Z1 photography]
Cheers :highfive:
(oh and I'm sorry for the mic quality after the intro - I'll fix it!)

Some really great shots there especially with a smartphone.. Thanks for keeping a video tutorial.. Comes in handy for that extra knowledge of understanding your smart phones camera capability.. Great work.. Cheers

of course we would love to see more of your photography tutorial with the z3, since i cant find a good tutorial on youtube .
been looking for this kind of tutorial since i bought my z3

great album
Please make more tutorials! Your album was great, I can believe those photos were taken using a smartphone.
I got a z3 but I haven't tried exploring its camera. But after seeing your album and watching your video I think I want to learn more.
:good::good::good:

great video explaining the camera features. I'm new to the Z3 so i can apply what i learned here. look forward to your next videos

Thanks for the tutorial!

Xperia P-Camera Samples!! Superb quality!! can we import the camera drives?

Hi all,
after so many post regarding our xperia 8mp camera low quality- look it the new xperia p camera samples here:
http://www.ixbt.com/mobile/sony-xperia-p.shtml
another sample:
http://cdn.asia.cnet.com/story_media/62213636/DSC_0031.jpg
http://mobilenet.cz/galerie/sony-xperia-p-82599/clanek-9207
Sony finally fixed the compression, lake of small details, strong sharpening problem
the photos are more like iPhone 4s now -clean and full of detail with no more aggressive post processing
is there any way to import the new camera drivers to our 8mp xperia devices?
Well I guess we would run into some big obstacles.... as much as I know the qualcom drivers are responsible for the bad quality output of the pictures.
Since Xperia P is running on the Nova Thor SoC the device gets better picture quality.
Look into this thread for more information concerning the related libs that need to be changed for better camera quality:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1309080
wow, amazing picture quality.
like pro camera
Excellent picture, wish we could get something like this with an update from Sony, or by modding from out great developers.
Damn, is this really a phone camera, looks so neat.
I think we should first know wheather the senser on ARC is the same to the senser on P
if it is we can import it on it by modify some place in the camera.apk
also we can choose the ISO
It sounds really great!
Damn, zoom in 100% on this picture, and it still looks sharp!

yes- and real natural sharpness (lens) and not crappy software sharpening like on our phones! and full of details!!
so qualcom is to blame! (crap post-processing!)
wow so much better than arc's camera, I'm 100% sure it's a different sensor
*JELLY*
It's the compression. With good lighting 2011 8MP camera's make good shots too.
Here are some pics I made with my Neo:
http://minus.com/mxCtiKuyk/1g
infairness to Xperia P, picture quality is mere like with the iphone 4s... hmmp...
The Iphone 4S picture quality is still one of the best for smartphones, and the sensor in it is similar (or the same) to the one we have in Xperia Arc.
Wow first of all this forum looks great if a little daunting.
If you'll permit a noob's questions who doesn't know anything about modding Android or any other OS for that matter, (I've searched the forum for similar questions but couldnt find anything):
I'm currently looking at buying a new phone and my top two conflicting priorities are camera and price. So I gather there's something wrong with the Arc's processing that the Xperia P doesn't suffer from?
I've currently got an Xperia Ray coming through the post but have discovered I could get a Xperia P for around about the same price. Are the differences in spec (and camera) worth me returning the Ray?
Or should I not be so Sony loyal and look for other brand mid/upper range phones? I can get the Galaxy SII for a little bit more, but if the camera difference is negligible I'd rather save the money.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

HTC ONE M8 YOUTUBE REVIEW. Check it out guys! Show some love and support! May be fun

I and the speedysilwady have teamed to bring you this new set of reviews on devices.
Our first is the HTC ONE M8!!! Let us know what you think, subscribe, share and like!!!

You filmed it the wrong way. Thumbs down
Yes.. That vertical letterbox makes it unwatchable. I only lasted a few minutes. Too distracting
I may not be a professional youtuber (yet ) but the best advice I can give you is maybe get your camera/camcorder a tripod so the camera is still and do it that way otherwise very strange but great video!
Was this meant to be a joke?

Just how capable is Sony's 20.7mp camera? - Let's see

Hey folks!
I'm a hobby photographer, and I'm interested in how capable Sony's latest 20.7 megapixel image sensor actually is.
I've seen Flickr groups for specific devices only and for "Xperia photography" in general but I haven't found one yet that only features all devices with the same (or similar) image sensor.
So I created one
I'd love to see this group flooded with the best of the best photographs taken with phones featuring this 20.7 megapixel image sensor.
So if you have a couple of nice pictures already on Flickr, taken with either the Xperia Z1, Z1 Compact or Z2, please share them in this group - it would make my day!
https://www.flickr.com/groups/xperiaphotography
Help me help others, by adding photos to show just how capable Sony's 20.7mp camera really is! :cyclops:
Also, if you have any questions about photography with the latest Sony phones, you could ask me here in this thread or you could even start a discussion on my Flickr group!
I'm not a Pro Photographer (yet) but I can answer quite some questions for people who just start out with photography
[Fun fact: I actually got into photography through cameraphones - starting with the SE K800i followed by the SE Satio]
Hi,
Cool idea for a group in Flickr. I have album on my Flickr account with photos from my Z1 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/sets/72157641744588983/).
I have photos from Xperia S too, but I have tons more from Z1. This phone is beast! I love it!
I'm experimenting all the time with photography and video. I recorded one advertisement and a couple of sketches for TV. It's awesome.
I'll post more later...

Please post those ads for TV that are recorded with the Z1. I'd love to see those. Please reply with quote.

Here are some of the videos that are already on YouTube.

We didn't had camera available for recording so we used my Z1. I'm losing quality when exporting the final video from Adobe Premiere. The original clips are way better than these on YouTube. But, as far as I'm concerned, nobody here noticed any difference on TV or for the Ad...
I like to experiment with the phone. I'll have to learn the camera man to record properly (since I'm in all of the videos) with the focus, the other is great. Hope you'll like it.

Photography tutorial for the Sony Xperia Z1

Hey XDAers!
I noticed that a lot of people were interested in photography with the Sony Xperia Z1. I'm a hobby photographer and a couple of people seem to appreciate my photography with it.
That's why I decided to share this with you:
A tutorial about the BASICS of your Sony camera phone
A tutorial about the more ADVANCED features
I hope you guys find this useful!
Happy snapping; try something different and creative; keep checking out that blog for more (general) photography tips and most importantly: have fun!

Hey,
Thanks for the feedback!
I was thinking about making a video too, but I don't have a decent microphone. I'll see how it goes
Cheers!

Really nice article, up to mark regarding the current accessible features of z1 (there still were 1 or 2 things i learned, )...

You can count on it!
I'll do so as soon as the update goes live. It's what I'm most excited about anyway, out of everything from Android 5.0 Lollipop
Oh and thanks everyone for the kind words! I did not expect this tutorial to be so interesting for people. I might seriously have to start doing a YouTube tutorial soon (after all, I prefer watching videos to reading as well).
I am following your photos since you first posted in the other thread - also following you on Flickr. I saw this thread when you posted it, but I was too sleepy...
Really nice tutorial, I am using the Z1 camera to take photos and I love its features. It is really a beast! I'm posting them on my Flickr.

Those Sony Lenses (QX10 or QX100, or the newer variants of which I forgot the model names) are separate cameras meaning that they have their own sensor and software.
It's therefore unrelated to the Xperia Z1's camera and algorithms of course. I'm not sure what you're asking about actually, with these lenses. You can always find people who have tried the lenses (or rather cameras) via Google, to see test shots for example. Again, they're unrelated to the device they're used with anyway
Thank you for all the effort
Great articles Herman, you've clearly spent a great deal of time and effort - thank you for that.
My one gripe with the camera is the spot metering. It would be so good if you could touch the screen to say "meter on this" rather than in the centre. A bit like the touch focus. I guess you'd need some setting to say what to do if the user touched an area on the screen (meter or focus or both).
I previously asked Sony to tell me what was the difference between spot and center metering and they gave me the usual answer - please try repairing your firmware - which was pretty lame.

That's actually a hilarious reply from Sony, in my eyes. Kind of reminds me of the high 10 guy meme.
Thanks for liking the articles! Right now I feel like I've missed a couple of things however, like a more elaborate explanation on Night Mode versus other modes. On your issue: I'm more concerned with other issues like how you have to re-set the ISO after choosing a scene mode or not being able to set shutter speed or shoot in RAW, rather than the metering mode. It is of course a really useful feature to have, but it's a minor one compared to these others, in my opinion.
If I were taking a guess about the spot and center metering is that it's the same as with my canon dslr. Only Sony left out an important keyword that describes it nicely : center WEIGHTED. Meaning that as opposed to average metering which takes the average of the whole frame it will rather focus on a circular section in the center section of the frame. Maybe somewhere there is a tech spec that can disclose how big an area that circle takes. Spot should do what it said. Takes a reading of the object under the meter area which can be the middle of the frame.
On a decent camera you would do a spot meter on the object, lock your exposure and then reframe your shot, focus and take the pic

I'm quite frustrated taking photos near sunset, when the lighting is more favorable, because all of the light sources in the image create long streaks of flaring (as in the sample)
Is there something wrong with my camera?
I've tried adjusting EV, and scene modes, but the flaring is still there.
Any ideas?

Another awesome project recorded only with this phone

I still am in awe of how awesome the quality is for this type of shooting. Do you really still need a 2000 dollar slr camera or even a camcorder anymore?
yes you do... phone cams cant be compared to system cameras...

i entered this thread expecting to see some crazy a$$ pic or some jaw dropping vid
where is it?
Totally agree with masze, there's no point comparing phone cameras with system cameras. I have to admit though, that both the pictures and videos taken with my G4 are awesome on a 4k tv...
I stumbled upon a video that gives tips and tricks on how to shoot awesome videos using basically any smartphone(Search for Armando Ferreria and Danny Winget on YouTube). Although it can replace your camera if you're in a tight budget, you'll still need to spend on decent tripods, head/mounts and/or a gimbal(stabilizer).
Where is this awesome project!?
